Multiple daily kernel panics since upgrade to Snow Leopard

Hi, all,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard early last week, and on average have about 3 kernel panics per day. (I haven't had any on this Macbook in the last 6 months of owning it). It's really starting to get on my nerves, and I can't figure out what may be doing it. I've been trying to read up on all the different kernel panic pages listed throughout the forums, but haven't been able to pin it down to anything yet. I figured I'd post the kernel panic report and see if anyone notices anything fishy. Thanks for the help!

Just had my first Snow Leopard kernel panic as well. It looks like the description of the possible cause is identical.
As far as I can see, the main difference (besides the different loaded kexts) is the message: "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: CIJScannerRegist" Does anyone know what that means?

  • Repeated kernel panic after upgrading to snow leopard

after the upgrade completed i got the "you need to restart your computer" screen, after doing so i kept getting sent to that screen
i called apple support, did numorous things that solved nothing.
finally booted into safemode and the install was completed and successful. but when i try to boot normally i get this kernel panic and the "you need to restart your computer" screen. i can not boot up out of safe mode..
not really sure what is causing the issue because there are no unloaded kexts...

What were the peripherals you had plugged into your Mac when you installed Snow Leopard? Apparently, one or more drivers or kernel extensions are corrupted.
You may have to perform another clean install to solve the problem, after completely erasing your hard drive. Since you seem to have a MacBook Pro (which model?), you may want to install with the battery removed: it'll clock the CPUs down, and it'll take a little longer, but you won't risk overheating, and that may sometimes be the reason why SL installs go bad.
Since Snow Leopard, the OS caches the files prior to install, so that you can perform a clean install in several instalments. The downside of this is, if/when a corrupted file is being cached, it gets written to disk anyway, and is not overwritten by a clean copy.

  • My mac won't open video clips from my iphone in iphoto since upgrading to snow leopard. Help.

My Mac won't open video clips from my iphone in iphoto in iphoto since upgrading to Snow Leopard. Usually I just used to double click and the video clip would open, now nothing happens.  Help please.

Can you access the material via the Finder or Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) ?

  • Since upgrading to Snow Leopard Problems when editing picture in Photoshop CS4 - not switching to dedicated space

    Hi,
I'd appreciate your help on this, maybe I just chose a stupid set-up to begin with.
I use spaces and have allocated Space 1 to Lightroom and Space 2 to Photoshop to always have a clear backdrop when switching to Photoshop.
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, when I choose 'Edit photo in Photoshop', Photoshop (the frame) opens fine in it's correct space, but the picture does not show. When I click on Window and on the respective picture window the picture shows but all reverts to Space 1 and I have the Lightroom window in the background so that I need to extend the Photoshop window to create a less distracting background.
Any idea why this happens or any suggestions for a better set up?
    Thanks heaps
    Claudia

    Claudia
I am running PS CS4 as an external editor for my Lightroom 2.5 installation on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and I have exactly the same 'Spaces' setup as you (i.e. LR and PS each are in their own space) but I am not experiencing the behaviour you are experiencing.
If it's of any help, you might try fiddling with the window behaviour in PS to see if it changes anything? In the "Window" menu I have selected the "Application Bar" rather than the "Application Frame".

  • Adobe Illustrator preview icons changed since upgrade to Snow Leopard

all of my Illustrator files preview icons have changed since upgrading to snow leopard. They use to have the Ai logo. Now they have what looks like the Postscript icon.
I believe preview icons are controlled by the OS so not sure what to do. Have done all of the usual run disk permissions etc.

Illustrator CS4 is installed on my computer and works fine. Double clicking the file will launch or open in Illustrator. It's only the preview that is wrong and a bit of a nuisance if I am looking for an illustrator file

  • Problem with Cisco VPN since upgrade to Snow Leopard

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard a couple of hours ago I can no longer open up my CiscoVPN application (version 4.9.01) which I use to connect to my network at work. When I try now I just get an "Error 51: message"
*Error 51: Unable to communicate with the VPN subsystem.*
Please make sure that you have at least one network interface that is currently active and has an IP address and start this application again.
I can still connect to the network if I use Parallels and use the Windows VPN client - but that's not really the point! I've tried the popular suggestion for Error 51 errors in the past (typing "sudo SystemStarter restart CiscoVPN" via Terminal) which doesn't work.
    Any ideas or help appreciated.
    Acculess

I was able to get it working without re-downloading the client (4.9.0.1.0080 was already installed). I noticed that System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN had been removed during the upgrade to snow leopard, so I pulled it back off of a Time Machine backup. Restoring that directory and doing a 'sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN restart' seemed to fix things up.

  • Can't "save as" .bmp since upgrading to Snow Leopard

Okay, I'm using CS2 and since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have been unable to "save as" .bmp once I choose save, Photoshop crashed

Well CS3 is officially "unsupported" (but still works OK). But CS2, given the under-the-hood changes to the OS, is doubtful that it will work at all. Or as you are experiencing, works sometimes and crashes on certain things. Best to consider an upgrade.

  • Since upgrading to Snow Leopard yesterday, twice I've been unable to get my screen saver to release back to my working desktop. Anybody else have this issue?

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard yesterday, twice I've been unable to get my screen saver to release back to my working desktop. Anybody else have this issue?

For a few users, since some point in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, there has been an occasional problem when trying to wake from sleep if you have Bluetooth enabled for the keyboard, Magic Mouse, Trackpad, etc.
The solution for me that worked 100% of the time was: System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.
For me, the problem ran intermittently through 10.6.something, all of 10.7 and now, finally, seems to be resolved in 10.8.2.

  • Real Player not working properly since upgrade to Snow Leopard

Ok, before I start, I know RealPlayer is not an Apple product, but I am not premium Real content subscriber, and I don't expect to get any support from Real on this matter.
I only use the player to listen to BBC Radio which is vital to me as I live outside the UK.
The problem is that since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, the streaming bit rate won't go above 21kbps which obviously reduces the sound quality. I checked what it was doing in Activity Monitor, (version 11.0) and it is not 64bit. Could this be the cause of the problem?

RealPlayer is a 32-bit application, but that shouldn't be a problem. It should run on Snow Leopard as well as it did on Leopard. It plays BBC Radio at 45Kbps on my Mac. Do you have the latest version (11.1.0)? Check the speed settings in its "Connection" preference.

  • Trash basket not emptying since upgraded to Snow leopard

I  am experiencing difficulties emptying my trash basket.  Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.8.2) the process to delete unlock or lock files in the trash can do not empty.

If you're on Mountain lion it would make more sense to post in that forum.
However, anyone who wants to help will need to know what's in the Trash and where it came from.
Note that the collective Trashes of all connected volumes are aggregated in the Trash in your Dock. They can only be emptied if the volume they're on is mounted on your Mac.
If you've trashed files from Time Machine you may well have corrupted your entire backup. See Pondini's articles and FAQ/Troubleshooting in that case; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html

  • URGENT: Bluetooth not found since upgrading to Snow Leopard

I have a MBP which I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, running 10.6.2.
Since upgrading I no longer have bluetooth on this machine.
I have tried the following without success:
    1. Installed temp monitor + smcFanControl to cool chipset down (temps at 39C)
    2. Reset PRAM + NVRAM
    3. Restarted (with / without power adaptor), Shut down, etc
    4. Installed latest drivers and software
    5. Deleted bluetooth*.plist
    6. tried changing sleep mode to hibernatemode 0
Bluetooth does not appear in the system preferences, or the toolbar or anywhere on the system. Bluetooth diagnostics does not locate it either.

Have you tried resetting the SMC? You said "Reset PRAM + NVRAM" so I'm not sure if you meant SMC when you said "PRAM"
If you have not tried resetting the SMC... give that a try. Be sure to follow the instructions for your specific model as they vary from machine to machine:

Bluetooth disappearing is not that uncommon and resetting the SMC usually brings it back.

  • Crashing since upgrade to Snow Leopard

I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.4 this summer. I am now living outside the states. Safari is crashing on a regular basis. Could I have some compatibility issues with some other program on my MacBookPro?
It particularly is happening when I am using gmail.

Try opening your mac in i think it called Super User or Single User user mode
    Turn off your mac
    Hold Down "Shift + S"
then press the power button and hold "Shift + S" until you are prompted to enter your password
Safari, Autodesk Maya crashed every five minutes since upgrading my imac's leopard to snow leopard and now i can use them all day without a problem. I think the problem is to do with permissions that disk utility cannot fix.

  • Losing connection to time machine since upgrading to snow leopard

My wife's mac mini has routinely started saying 'no connection available' since we upgraded to snow leopard. It also keeps asking for the network password, which it has never done before on my time machine. I thought it was a fluke with the mini, till my macbook started doing the same thing.
Please have someone look at the issue between the dual band time capsule and snow leopard.
    Thanks.

You're not talking to Apple here -- this is a user-to user forum.
Try just re-selecting the Time Capsule in TM Preferences. If that doesn't help, try restarting both the Macs and the TC.
To contact Apple directly, call AppleCare at (800-275-2273), or make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple store, and take your TC and one or both Macs along.
This appears to be a Time Capsule problem, not a Time Machine problem, so you'll probably do better in the +Time Capsule+ forum, hiding in the +Digital Life+ section, at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253

  • Trouble with FCP since Upgrading to Snow Leopard

I intentionally waited to upgrade to Snow Leopard to assure the bugs were worked out. Everything ran well on Leopard on my MacPro. Once I did the upgrade most everything has worked well. One very strange occurrence has me baffled and I hope someone here may have the answer. When I use the Audio Mixer in the program I notice that once I make an adjustment to a level then release the mouse, the audio plays for a moment then goes silent. Once I click on a slider again or hit the space bar to stop then start the playing of the track again, the audio returns until I adjust the sliders again. Anyone experienced this? Did not do this in Leopard. How might I fix this annoying problem.
    Thanks,
    Phil Hanna

When upgrading editing systems to new versions of the MacOS, it is always advised to backup your computer, or clone the current working drive, then erase it and install the OS and your applications from scratch. Upgrading the OS around your current working system, about 90% of the time, presents small issues here and there.
