Multiple ethernet connections on a WDS with AirPort Express?

Going through the AirPort Admin Utility and Airport Setup Assistant, and the various pdf manuals, the only way I can seem to create a WDS is for each device to be a wireless bridge.
Even setting it up initially as a WDS that connects using AirPort (default config from the setup assistant), then changing it to connect via Ethernet completely broke the bridging and caused much mayhem.
I'd prefer to set up the new Express device as a wired bridge, as I have a spare ethernet connection on the same subnet. I presume this would lessen the overhead needed by the WDS in general and would speed up the overall performance slightly.
Does anybody have any clue how to go about this, if it is possible? I bet it's something small and stupid I've overlooked.
Going back about ten pages in this forum didn't seem to cover this subject, so I apologize if I'm bringing up this subject AGAIN. Oh yeah, and all Airport Express devices involved are on firmware v6.3

Disable the distribution of IP Address on the Express setup.
You don't mention if you are using Airport Express or Extreme for your Main Base. If so then here is the link.

If you are using a 3rd party Router as your Main Base then you will need to check out one of these 2 links and remember not all 3rd party routers are capable of WDS setup.

  • WDS with Airport express and Dual ethernet Airport base

Can the airport express and dual ethernet airport base create a wds? I can't find the options on the airport base's software.

coloradoapple, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Dual Ethernet (snow) AirPort base station (ABS) does not support WDS.
Only the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express (AX) support WDS.

  • HT5304 what is the best way to connect my imac wireless with airport express or directly plugged into airport unit

    Hello quinstar,
It sounds like you would like to use either your Personal HotSpot to AirPrint from your MacBook Pro or use an Airport to do so without internet access to the home. According to the following Featured Discussion you very well may be able to use AirPrint with Personal HotSpot:
HT4356 Can I use personal hotspot as wifi to connect printer?
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4007254
Also, the Airport products to not need an active internet connection to set up a home Wi-Fi connection so that is another option as well.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Sharing internet connection using 4200 speedstream with airport express

I have xp windows sp2 loaded on a desktop with ethernet connection to a modem and have a macbook pro laptop using airport express. I have to reset the modem to full bridge mode to access the internet when using airport express wireless connection, this disables the connection to the internet on my desktop ( the error displayed is low conductivity through the modem). To get my desk top to work on the internet I have to reset the modem and set it to optus bridge. This allows access to the internet but disables my airport express connecton.
Is there a way to allow sharing my connection to the internet without reseting the modem.

    G'day mate,
The SpeedStream 4200 supplied to Telstra BigPond customers is a single user device, connect it to a 'Switch' or 'Router' to share the Internet Service or, replace the whole thing with an ADSL2+ Wireless Modem Router and get coverage all over your house.

  • Comcast Internet connection no longer works with Airport Express

This is a little bit out of my depth, so I'm hoping that someone can help me.
I've been accessing Comcast High Speed Internet through my Airport Express connection for more than a year. Things were great until last week when my connection stopped working. The only way I'm able to access the internet is by connecting my iBook directly to the modem.
I tried resetting my Airport Express. I even did it manually so I could manually enter the DNS Servers and Domain Name. That worked for about two days, but now I'm back to where I need to connect directly to the modem.
Maybe there's something I'm not doing correctly. I'd appreciate any help I could get.

    gerasco, welcome to the discussions,
It sounds like you are doing everything right and the AirPort Express may be acting up.
Normally, you would reset this device by plugging it in and holding in the reset button until the amber light flashes rapidly.
This time, try a hard reset as follows:
    Unplug the AirPort Express
Hold in the reset button and CONTINUE to hold it in as you plug in back in to power
Release the reset button after approx 10 seconds.
Setup the Express again and see if that helps. If you continue to experience problems with the Express, it is likely that it will need to be replaced or repaired.
Please post back on your progress.

  • Unable to create a WDS with airport express.

I have had a WDS AE for years and today I was redoing my network (all AE, 1 main, 1 WDS and 1 for itunes speakers) and every time I am trying to setup the AE for WDS (using the "assist me" menu) it won't update the AE instead I get an error message "unable to... Quit Airport utility and try again"
I have tried with different AE stations, from my G5, from my MBA same problem.
Using WEP or WPA no difference, all my AE are /g.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you

Found the answer right here and got the WDS working:

  • Advised to get an "extender" to be able to stream netflix, etc. through new digital tv.  Apple store told me to buy Airport Express and set up WDS.  Upon reading about WDS it stated cannot set up WDS with Airport Express 802.11n,

I was advised I needed an "extender" to stream Netflix, etc. through my newly purchased digital TV.  Apple store advised me to buy Airport Express and choose WDS setting.  When reading instructions on how to set up WDS it states cannot set up WDS with an 802.11n airport express, which is what they told me to purchase.  How do I set up this Airport Express to extend my internet signal from my modem & airport to be able to stream internet capability to my TV?

  • WDS with Airport Express & network hard drive

I am considering getting an extra Airport Express BS to improve range of my current AX-based network. At the same time, I'm considering getting a network hard drive for everyone in the house to use for shared stuff. If I got this presumably I could connect it via USB to the new AX base station. Is this right? Is it sensible?
Also, why don't I ditch the Apple products and get just one Belkin Wireless G+ MIMO Router F5D9230 with its claimed 1000 ft. of wireless range? Any views?
    Thanks
    D

the usb port is for a printer, so it would not give network access to a hard drive connected to it (you need to connect the drive to a mac and share it from there)
the belkin will only give significantly extended range with matching mimo cards in the client devices, so you'd need to do more than replace the ax with the belkin
given that apple is already shipping hardware with next generation wireless chipsets (but no software to use the extra features) you might want to wait and see what apple does in january

    - another Airport Express
    - an Airport Extreme Base Station
    - a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS
    - a Belkin Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    - one specific model from SMC

For wireless routers not on this short list - not possible.
In particular, it will not work with any WiFi routers from D-Link or Netgear.

  • Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time caspule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport Express it worked!

Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time capsule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport express it worked, the single Ethernet port got the IP Parameters passed through!
My setup is a Vodafon Esaybox connected to ISP. Time Capsule is not able to extend the wlan of the easybox, neither airport express can do.
Only the option "connect to wlan" is succesful.
With airport express I was able to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the lan via ethernet to stream pictures, the TV set got an IP adress from the easybox.
With the time capsule the easybox dosn't find devices connected to the ethernet ports to submit IP adresses. The TV set get another IP adress (169.xxx.x.x.) in subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and I don not now where from.
My notebook is a MacBook pro.
    Any idea????
    Thank a lot in advance!
    Kind regards

Neverthe less, could there be the chance, that this feature could be implemnented with an firmware update?
That would appear to be a question for Apple to answer. You can make suggestions to Apple here:
Apple - AirPort Extreme - Feedback
If the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are configured to "extend a wireless network" they will provide additional wireless coverage....and...the Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup.
The "catch" here is that you must have an Apple router providing the network to be extended.

  • Can't connect to the internet with airport or firewire

I can't seem to connect to the internet with airport or firewire. I recently restored my old G4 mac mini PPC 1.42 (with airport and bluetooth) Tiger 10.4.8 with a new harddrive. I have it connected to my leopard mac pro, internet sharing is on (both computers), the systems are connected, however, the mini just can't connect to the internet. tried it also using airport, no go. network diagnosis seems to go in a constant loop.

works ok with ethernet connection though.
    that'll work.

  • How make wireless connection with airport express to  Yamaha Clavinova CVP-403 ?

I would like to wirelessly connect my Yamaha Clavinova CVP-403. I would like to use a D-link DWA 125 and my airport express. Does anyone has any experience on how to do that?

Hi Henry - you seem to be a very helpful and knowledgeable person and I am wanting to dive in to the depths of wireless working at home and could probably do with your advice. I certainly don’t have as much knowledge as Jaybee and if he’s had problems I am feeling a little apprehensive.
I know that the first thing I need to do is get an ethernet modem to use with Airport Express as I currently only have a USB modem. I was wondering if you have any recommendations or if I should go straight for the Netgear DSL modem/router (DG834B) that Jaybee ended up with. Although the bit about ‘disabling the Airport Express resp. Extreme routers’ scares me rigid
I have looked at ‘About this Mac’ and got the following for you – hope it’s helpful.
    OSX 10.3.9
    1.33 HGz PowerPC G4 processor
    Airport Extreme: Worldwide
    Firmware: 400.17(3.90.34.0.p11)
    Airport admin utility: 4.2 (v420.31)
My ISP is also Tiscali (UK) - they have said they can only provide modem support on the USB modem they provide so once I switch to an ethernet modem I’ll be on my own. I have checked the Tiscali website and found the following modems, so I would assume (probably unwisely) that they would be compatible with my account...
    Zoom X6 5590 DSL Modem (55907200)
    D-Link DSL-300T
Zoom Hayes ADSL Ethernet (H0-15805) (081580572)
Any help is very gratefully received.

  • Extend wireless airport extreme with airport express with through ethernet cable, extend wireless airport extreme with airport express with through ethernet cable

i want to extend my wirless range i using airport extreme upstairs and airport express down i have ethernet cable linking the two but airport express seems to go wireless and is extremly slow any help appreciated

Start with a "hard reset" of your Express - press and hold its reset button continuously, about five seconds, until its LED flashes rapidly. You will need to reconfigure all its settings.
Connect it to your Extreme with your Ethernet cable. Using AirPort Utility, configure its Internet Connection to "Connect Using" > "Ethernet" as in the following screenshot:
If it had been previously configured to "join" a wireless network and you connect its Ethernet cable to your wired LAN, you may experience what you are describing.

  • Trekstor pocketair wifi storage connecting with airport express

    Hey there!
Is is possible connecting a Trekstor wifi Storage with airport express? I wanna use Itunes and this storage for streaming music with mit mac pro book (OS X 10.9.3)
Or is it nessaray to use a apple wifi storage like airport extreme?
    Thanks!
    Best regards
    Michael

Is is possible connecting a Trekstor wifi Storage with airport express?
In theory, the Trekstor should be able to connect to an existing network either via a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (Wi-Fi) connection. The AirPort Express, depending on the model, can supply both.
On the other hand, the Express DOES NOT support hard drives connected to its USB port; whereas, the Extreme and Time Capsule base stations do.
