Multiple JDK installation procedure

This is a question from a newbee in the Java world.
- I was told that, we can install multiple JDKs in a single Linux server. Is it possible? If yes, how and what are the steps involved?
- Will there be any problem, when newer version of JDK intallation creating any kind of disruption or currupting the already installed older version of JDK?????
- Are there any TAR files of these JDK available, which we can just untar and use them for the programs needed?
It will be highly appreciated if you can provide answers to my queries and also please let me know links for JDK TAR downloads.

You can install as many JDKs as you like.
They will not interfere with one another.
No special steps need to be taken.
I rarely remove old JDKs when I install a new one.

  • Multiple jdk versions on solaris--best practices and advice

    I am a newcomer to solaris system administration (not by choice--I am normally just a Java programmer, but am now responsible for testing code on a new solaris box), so apologies for the newbie questions below.
    #1: is it typical for a brand new solaris install to have multiple versions of Java on it?
    After installation, which left me with this version of solaris:
         SunOS asm03 5.10 Generic_120011-14 sun4v sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5220I find from pkginfo, that their are 2 old versions of java installed:
         SUNWj3dev     J2SDK 1.4 development tools
    SUNWj3dmo     J2SDK 1.4 demo programs
    SUNWj3dvx     J2SDK 1.4 development tools (64-bit)
    SUNWj3irt     JDK 1.4 I18N run time environment
    SUNWj3jmp     J2SDK 1.4 Japanese man pages
    SUNWj3man     J2SDK 1.4 man pages
    SUNWj3rt      J2SDK 1.4 runtime environment
    SUNWj3rtx     J2SDK 1.4 runtime environment (64-bit)
    SUNWj5cfg     JDK 5.0 Host Config. (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5dev     JDK 5.0 Dev. Tools (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5dmo     JDK 5.0 Demo Programs (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5dmx     JDK 5.0 64-bit Demo Programs (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5dvx     JDK 5.0 64-bit Dev. Tools (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5jmp     JDK 5.0 Man Pages: Japan (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5man     JDK 5.0 Man Pages (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5rt      JDK 5.0 Runtime Env. (1.5.0_12)
    SUNWj5rtx     JDK 5.0 64-bit Runtime Env. (1.5.0_12)Both of these versions are years old; I am surprised that there is not just a single version of JDK 1.6 installed; it only came out, what, going on 2 years ago? I definitely need JDK 1.6 for all of my software to run.
    On my windows and linux boxes, I never usually have multiple JDKs; I always deinstall the current one before installing a new one. So, I went first to try and deinstall JDK 1.4 by executing
         pkgrm SUNWj3dev SUNWj3dmo SUNWj3dvx SUNWj3irt SUNWj3jmp SUNWj3man SUNWj3rt SUNWj3rtxThe package manager detected dependencies like
    WARNING:
         The <SUNWmccom> package depends on the package currently being removed.
    WARNING:
         The <SUNWmcc> package depends on the package currently being removed.
    [+ 8 more]and I decided to abort deinstallation because I have no diea what all these other programs are, and I do not want to cripple my system.
    If anyone has any idea what programs Sun is shipping that still depend on JDK 1.4, please enlighten me.
    #2: Is there any easy way to not only deinstall, say, JDK 1.4 but also deinstall all packages which depend on it?
    Maybe this is too dangerous.
    #3: Is there at least a way that I can find all the programs which depend on an entire group of packages like
         SUNWj3dev SUNWj3dmo SUNWj3dvx SUNWj3irt SUNWj3jmp SUNWj3man SUNWj3rt SUNWj3rtx?
    The above functionality would have come in real handy if I could have done it before doing what I describe next.
    I next decided to try removing JDK 1.5, so I executed
         pkgrm SUNWj5cfg SUNWj5dev SUNWj5dmo SUNWj5dmx SUNWj5dvx SUNWj5jmp SUNWj5man SUNWj5rt SUNWj5rtxI thought that this command would let me know of any dependencies of ANY of the packages that are listed. It doesn't. Instead, it merely checks the first one, and if no dependencies are found, then removes it before marching down the list. In the case above, it happily removed SUNWj5cfg because there were no dependencies on it. Then it stalled on SUNWj5dev because it found dependencies like:
    WARNING:
         The <SUNWmctag> package depends on the package currently being removed.
    WARNING:
         The <SUNWmcon> package depends on the package currently being removed.
    [+ 3 more]#4: Have I left my JDK 1.5 crippled by removing SUNWj5cfg? Or was this pretty harmless?
    #5: Was I fairly stupid to attempt the deinstallations above in the first place? Do solaris people normally leave old JDKs in place?
    #6: Or is it the case that those dependency warnings are harmless: I can go ahead and remove all old JDKs, because java programs will always find the new JDK and should run just fine with it?
    #7 Whats the deal with solaris and having multiple packages for something like the JDK? With Windows, for instance, the entire JDK has a single installer and deinstaller program. Its much easier to work with that the corresponding Solaris stuff. Do Solaris people simply need that much finer grained control over what gets installed and what doesn't? (Actually, with the Windows JDK, the gui installer program can let you install selected components should you wish; I am just not sure how scriptable this is versus the solaris stuff, which may be more sys admin friendly if you have to administer many machines.)

    The easiest thing to do is to just install the latest into a clean directoryI believe different versions of jdk install into their own separate directory by default. All one needs to do is recreate the symbolic links that point to the version they want to use. The java install documentation has the details.

  • Multiple BAM installations on the same machine?

    Hi guys,
    I have a customer with the following requirement:
    "We have installed BAM 10.1.3.3 with EL and upgraded to 10.1.3.4. It is currently using a remote database 10.2.0.3 in our test envt. We want to use the same Windows server for monitoring our Development enviroment also using the Dev database. Is it feasible or will it corrupt the IIS of the windows machine already running BAM 10.1.3.4. Please provide your recommendations on this, whether to have separate windows servers or we can have multiple BAM installations on same server."
    Any ideas on this?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Installation procedure for WRT54GC does not detect router on Windows Vista.

    Today I bought a used WRT54GC, supposed to be in working condition.  I ran the installation procedure on my Vista laptop, following the detailed steps to the letter, and all was going fine, until the detection routine.  All the router's lights were blinking, and others solid, as per the instructions, but a few seconds later I got a message stating that ".. Setup was not able to find a Compact Linksys Wireless router on the network....etc".
    I immediately went to reset the unit, inserting a pin and waiting until the power light blinked several times (about 30 seconds).  This did not help.  I also reset the DSL modem, just in case, to no avail.
    I have contacted the vendor, and he users that the unit was fine.
    The Linksys support page has several user's forums references to how to 'connect' using Windows Vista, but all assume the unit has already been installed and working, which I found frustrating, since I cannot install it!
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    gherna1

    The trick is not to use the installation disk, but connect the PC/laptop directly to the router (wired), let it assign the dynamic IP address (default action), and then use the router's interface to set it up.  Its address is 192.168.1.1 (it may be different for other models or brands).
    I was able to set it up this way and now I'm enjoying it.  Thanks to all who offered their advice.
    Regards,
    gherna1.

    Hey Guys,
    I am in the process of installing service packs to my SQL Server 2008 and R2 editions, I was searching for the installation procedure in technet for this but nothing was provided for this, I tried to read the
    "readme" and setup documentation provided in the SP 4 download page but its useless since its redirecting again to some other page which again points to same download page, It makes me wonder if there are any procedures provided by Microsoft for
    this. Let me know if anyone has it. I don't want to follow any third party websites/ individual bloggers providing best practices/installation procedures.
    My Environment: SQL SERVER 2008/ R2  (STANDARD)  and these are standalone

  • Installation Procedures Proven Best Practices 10 Years...

    I wish to address two topics under this posting:
    1. The intentional use of the v1.1 Combo update
    2. Recommended pre-installation procedures that have proven to work for me over the last 10 years. I make the following statements for inferential purposes: I use my macs to make a living: professional video, film, for broadcast, as well as technical work in industrial engineering, both elec. and mech. I do all my own maint. and repairs, hard and soft.
    1. Someone had mentioned that the v1.1 combo update was applicable to only a handful of machines that had problems using the original 10.6.3 combo update. Well this is obviously not true as Apple has removed the original 10.6.3 combo update download from their support downloads and replaced it with the v1.1 combo update. Additionally, the details of the v1.1 combo update do not specify specific machines... obviously, there was something amiss with the original 10.6.3 combo updater download.
    2. Prior to executing major updates I always follow these procedures and policies, most of which I must credit to a gentleman who posts on this site under the name "Kappy", who has helped me numerous times over the last 10 years, is very approachable, and knowledgeable:
    A). Never perform major updates on a "bread-n-butter" (i.e. a mac you use to make a living) machine if you need to use it within a week of doing the update.
    B). Plan on doing a full restore, taking the appropriate precautions such as cloning / backing up, etc...Hopefully you'll be presently surprised and won't need to restore.
    C). Monitor the support discussions for at least a week before doing the update.... patients is a sign of wisdom. "Fools rush in where angles fear to tread"...
    D). Set energy saver (system preferences) not to engage, then Run all other mac and 3rd party software updates
    E). Download the required update from apples support downloads. Important: if it is a OS update, ALWAYS download and install the "combo" updater. It contains additional fixes, etc. that the regular update does not, and that you may have missed. Always download major updates, do not use the OS auto updater (various reasons).
    F). Reboot, and using Disk Utility, verify the target disk, and repair permissions.
    G). Repair preferences and run OSX Cocktail (both are free, google them for download sites)
    H). Reboot, Run Diskwarrior ($100 from alsoft.com)
    I). Run Drive Genius repair utility ($99 prosoftengineering.com)
    J). Reboot, Run Drive Genius defrag utility
    K). Reboot, Run Disk Warrior again
    L). Boot into "safe mode" by holding down the shift key while restarting. (this disables any 3rd party software, virus software, etc. that very often causes failures during major intalls / upgrades).
    M). Install your update from the previously downloaded update file (item E, above).
    N). Reboot, and perform items D, F, G, H, I, J, K again.
    Hope this helps!
    Your Pragmatic Apple Fan
    John

    Hi Kappy, thanks for weighing in. Hope all is well with you. With regard to using software updater. I choose not to use this feature for major updates because it eliminates another external variable which has potential to cause a problem with the download and installation process (e.g. LANs, WANs, etc.). The download and install process becomes one while a "hick-up" in either can cause problems. Circumnavigating the software updater allows me more control. I also always choose to use the combo updater because, while it includes integral updates that are suppose to be found in the singular updaters, I assume that the code for the combo updaters is written subsequent to the singular updaters and thereby, in effect, supersedes the previously released updates. I do not, however lay claim to knowledge of Apple software team's configuration control protocols. I would assume that they have many similarities to the Configuration Control/Management. procedures I use, DoD MIL-STD 973 / ANSI-EIA 649. Knowing this, there is undoubtedly some degree of fallibility, however minute. Additionally, I would also assume that using a combo updater serves to possibly "reset" certain system settings / code, that may have become corrupted over time. Stemming from this rational, is my preference to always use the combo updater; not required, but preferential. I will say though, I never suffer the problems codified in these forums by other users, with respect to installation problems. I must conclude this is due to the aforementioned protocols I follow. However, I always remain open to your suggestions and instructions as they have served myself and others quite well over the years.
    Take care Kappy, and good to hear from you again.
    Respectfully,
    John

  • Issue with multiple application installation and server share

    Hi,
    SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 ICP2
    All servers W2K8R2
    I am having an issue with software installs.  When using a variable for multiple applciation installs, I get access errors when the applications go to install.  It appears to be a multiple connection issue, but I can't figure out why.
    I am using server shares for my DPs.  The proper permissions are set.  The servers (DP) are W2K8R2.  I think it has to do with the way R2 handles the conenctions.  I want to know if this is a known issue or if anyone has come accross
    it.
    I am going to post in the software distribution forum as well, but thought this would be a config question.

    Hi! I'm waking up this dead thread but I've got a *very* similar problem!
    I've got a SCCM 2007 SP2 R3 installation on Win2008.  All clients are in the same ConfigMgr-site. Multiple package deploy in the same site-boundary as the CM-server works excellent. (We've got  three DPs in the same site-boundary as the
    CM-server itself.)
    Now, we have a new site-boundary with it's own Protected DP where multiple package deploy fails
    but the same packages, being run from the task-sequnce works! So then the client can download, install and run the packages from the proteced DP just fine. All "single" packages install fine before the "Multiple Appliaction"-step.
    I've tripple checked that we're running the same packages when we're installing Multiple Packages as we do in the Task-Sequence. And
    the same Task-sequence with the Multiple Package installation step
    works fine in our site-boundary where the ConfigMgr-server is installed.
    Here's the log from a client trying to access and install one of three packages through the the Install Multiple Packages task-sequence step.

    I know that the TS checks package dependencies before executing the TS. That's not possible with Multiple packages since they are variable dependant. I think this is somehow related although it doesn't explain why my client can't authenticate properly.

  • JDK installation finished with error code -3

    I tried to use the installer for netbeans IDE + jdk (jdk-7u21-nb-7_3-windows-i586.exe). All of the netbeans stuff is installed fine, but the jdk part fails, but at least this time it lets me know "Installation of JDK 7 Update 21 was not completed."
    The log files just say there is an exception at org.netbeans.installer.utils.exceptions.InstallationException: JDK installation finished with error code -3.
    So it has worked fine on my other machine, I am at a loss here. Sorry again that I couldn't figure out where to post this.

  • Running Multiple JDKs on the Same Machine

    I've been developing with the 1.4.2_07 JDK, but my company is moving to the 1.5.0 JDK as the new standard for our product. Of course, we're going to continue supporting the 1.4.x JRE as a deployment platform for the near term.
    As a developer, I'm going to need to have both JDKs installed, side-by-side so that I can use both of them in my development/testing cycles. So I just downloaded and installed the 1.5.x JDK, and I defined the following environment variables:
    JAVA_HOME_1_4 = C:\j2sdk1.4.2_07
    JAVA_HOME_1_5 = C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02
    JAVA_HOME = %JAVA_HOME_1_4%
    In theory, I should now be able to switch JDKs just by changing my JAVA_HOME variable to %JAVA_HOME_1_5%.
    Easy as pie.
    Unfortunately, that doesn't work, because the 1.5 JDK installs a number of registry keys which hard-code the current java version. So, even when I have JAVA_HOME set up to point to the 1.4.x JDK, running "java -version" at the commandline indicates that the 1.5 java is being called.
    I'd like to suggest to Sun that, in the future, there should be a generic, version-independent launcher that reads in the JAVA_HOME variable at runtime and calls the appropriate binaries and the appropriate runtime libraries.
    Having to futz around with the registry every time I want to switch my development environment is a big hassle.

    I've been developing with the 1.4.2_07 JDK, but my
    company is moving to the 1.5.0 JDK as the new
    standard for our product. Of course, we're going to
    continue supporting the 1.4.x JRE as a deployment
    platform for the near term.
    As a developer, I'm going to need to have both JDKs
    installed, side-by-side so that I can use both of
    them in my development/testing cycles. So I just
    downloaded and installed the 1.5.x JDK, and I defined
    the following environment variables:
    JAVA_HOME_1_4 = C:\j2sdk1.4.2_07
    JAVA_HOME_1_5 = C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_02
    JAVA_HOME = %JAVA_HOME_1_4%
    In theory, I should now be able to switch JDKs just
    by changing my JAVA_HOME variable to
    %JAVA_HOME_1_5%.
    Easy as pie.
    Unfortunately, that doesn't work, because the 1.5 JDK
    installs a number of registry keys which hard-code
    the current java version. So, even when I have
    JAVA_HOME set up to point to the 1.4.x JDK, running
    "java -version" at the commandline indicates that the
    1.5 java is being called.
    I'd like to suggest to Sun that, in the future, there
    should be a generic, version-independent launcher
    that reads in the JAVA_HOME variable at runtime and
    calls the appropriate binaries and the appropriate
    runtime libraries.
    Having to futz around with the registry every time I
    want to switch my development environment is a big
    hassle.
    --BenjiSmithI've tried the same approach, but abit different
    first - deleted java.exe and javaw.exe from %SystemRoot%\system32
    Then set the following (All vars are system ones)
    JAVA_HOME=D:\sun\jdk1.5.0_04
    JAVA_HOME_1.4=D:\sun\j2sdk1.4.2_08
    JAVA_HOME_1.5=D:\sun\jdk1.5.0_04
    JAVA_HOME_BIN=%JAVA_HOME%\bin
    PATH=%JAVA_HOME_BIN%;...
    Now by switching JAVA_HOME we should get it right
    but,
    it appears that xp recognizes the new values for vars only upon rebooting.
    Also, you can see all current vars by typing set in cmd
    More over, I thought that maybe it'd work if I just simply logout/login back, and it did but strangely the var while JAVA_HOME showed a new value, JAVA_HOME_BIN had the previous one.

  • How to determine Oracle_Home default from multiple home installation?

    Does anyone know how to determine the current Oracle Home default in the registry when multiple Oracle Home exists?
    Both 8i and multiple 9i Version X's exist on a client machine. We need to determine the current default oracle home to determine path for various drivers.
    In analyzing the Oracle Home registry keys I have been unable to find a means for identifying the current Oracle Home default.

    Thank you for you reply, your advice is good. Unfortunately our application has to deal with all kinds of Oracle configurations and one of those is the multi-home issue. We have looked throughout the registry particular in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORACLE|ALL_HOMES\
    but have not found any entry that would indicate a default home. One two different system installation of multiple client installations there is no DEFAULT_HOME. We do have the HOME0, HOME1, ... HOME4 but, these are just sequencial based on when they where installed not on the order of preference or any default setting. Problem is our application needs to know the default home to locate the appropriate drives to use and appropriate connects service to look-up(tnsname) also.
    Thanks.

  • Multiple language installer for Adobe Reader

    I need a compressed multiple language installer for Adobe Reader to install with my software.  Is one available?

    When we requested a license to distribute the multi-language version of Adobe Reader with our software, we recieved the following link to a download:
    "For full installers: "
    "To download the English language version of Adobe Reader 9 with Acrobat.com in compressed .exe format, click here."
    When you click on the link, you get a single file (AdbeRdr11006_en_US.exe).  This is an installation for english only.  I am looking for a single .exe file for a multi-language installation.
    The link you provided above is to a .zip file that must be extracted and then run.  This requires additional steps in our installation process.  We were hoping you have a single installation file to prevent these additional steps.
