Multiple macs showing under Shared in Finder

Hi,
Running Yosemite 10.10 on an iMac 27".
Noticed that I have 19 Pete's iMac (#) showing under Shared in the Finder as per screen shot below.  I recall this happening a few OS X versions ago but what's the cause.  Is it anything to do with my ISP assigning and changing IP addresses regularly?
Does this matter at all.
All thoughts appreciated.
Pete

I had the same problem on my home network with my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012).
My home network has an Airport express attached to the cable modem creating the wireless network and an Airport extreme on the other end of the house extending the network. On the network are two Apple TVs, an iMac, my MacBook Pro, a TIVO, and 3 iPhones.
For me the solution involved two steps: first, turning off "Wake for Wi-Fi network access" and "enable Power Nap when plugged into a power adapter" under the Power Adapter Tab of Energy Saver in System Preferences. Next I turned off all the computers on the network, unplugged each Apple TV, and unplugged the airports. I turned back on the airports followed by the Apple TVs and then the computers.
The downside is that back to my mac and find my mac will not work when the macbook is asleep in this configuration.
I worked with Apple support and the case was escalated. They called me back to tell me there was not a fix.
Initially we had turned off "Wake for Wi-Fi network access" and restarted the Airport Express and that made the MacBook Pro stop renaming itself and eliminated all but one of the phantom computers under Shared in the Finder side bar (number 9). But, the remaining phantom computer was driving me nuts.
I found a thread on Reddit that noted:
The problem is because of a bug between Yosemite and sleep servers. These servers reside in Apple TVs and Airports and act as a proxy for a sleeping machine on Wi-Fi. For now the only fix seems to be:
System Preferences --> Energy Saver, and UNTICK "Wake for network access".
Shut down your computer and then cycle the power on your Apple TV/s and/or Airport/s.
Power-up your computer, System Preferences --> Sharing, and rename the "Computer Name" as you wish.
This step is what killed my last phantom computer on the network.
There is an Apple support community thread that details a fix in terminal that will allow wake for network access, but I've not tried that yet. Here is that thread - Yosemite is renaming my computer - why?
Here is the Reddit thread that helped me identify that devices on the network were creating one of the phantom computers - http://www.reddit.com/r/osx/comments/2hxhp9/yosemite_computer_name_changing_for_ some_reason/
And this support community thread was also helpful - Computer name changes incrementally (1, 2, 3...)

  • Not all Macs show under shared

I have an iMac and 2 Macbooks with Time Capsule as WAP. The one Macbook shows under shared on Finder of iMac and one Macbook. The other Macbook doesn't show on either iMac or other Macbook. How do I get all three to show on each others shared panel? TC shows on all three.

Interestingly enabling stealth mode with FW on and printer sharing checked did the trick. Do you know anything about scanner sharing? When I check Scanner Sharing my old scanner shows up. That scanner is gone, however. But I can't seem to get rid of the old scanner name. Any idea how to get rid of the old name?

  • Network devices not showing up under "shared" in finder bar

Ok so i have a network that consists of a maxtor nas device, 2 win xp pc's, 1 win7 pc, d-link 524 router, and my macbook pro. I would like to be able to transfer files between my mac and the devices and use the printer attached to my maxtor. My issue is that none of the computers show up under the "shared" section of finder or under network. I use to have this issue with leopard but it resolved itself. Now under snow leopard for a couple months and i have yet to get it work. I can access my mac and other pcs from a pc. Anyone know how to get my network to show up on my mac?

Your problem is very common under Snow. At first my shares did not show up under shared in finder windows. I, then, of course, used "Connect to Server" to connect to the shares--both Mac and PC. I found that the more I kept the shares active the more likely they were show up under shared. Then, I discovered that if I kept the computers from sleeping during the period of needed access they would tend to stay in shared without nearly so much keeping the connections active.
If you do not like the above work around, then there are two other possibilities. You can elect to show mounted items on your desktop. Do that and connect to each share. Then, go > users > unlock > + login options > try dragging the mounted shares to the login item window. If successful, then the shares should be available at login.
Another approach is to mount and connect as indicated above. Then, making an alias to the share should at least make things faster.

  • An unknown computer shows up under SHARED in Finder

An unknown computer (named "mac001b63aca152) that its info shows that it is PC Server shows up under SHARED in Finder. Is there a way I can be sure it doesn't have access to my files and also is it possible to remove it from the SHARED list?
    Thanks in advance,
    Behrang

I have seen a number like that "mac" followed by what looks like MAC address on my MacBook Pro in System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced Button > WINS tab at the Computer name.
It seemed to happen following an update where it seemed to have forgotten what I had named it and used the Airport Media Access Card (MAC) address instead.

  • MacBook shows up multiple times under 'Shared' in finder

My MacBook keeps showing up multiple times under 'Shared' in the Finder sidebar. All sharing services are turned of in System Preferences. The number in the computer name is automatically added. When I change the computer name to another name, all existing 'ghost computers' stay there in the sidebar.  How do I get rid of these?

Known bug. Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
    Feedback
Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.
    Feedback via Apple Developer
Some people have managed to stop this behavior by going to System Preferences/Sharing and stopping all sharing except screen sharing.

  • Printer attached to wifi AP shows up under 'Shared' in Finder; can't print

I have reviewed quite a few threads on Bonjour printing problems cropping up in the move from 10.4 to 10.5. I still can't seem to get mine to work.
I printed fine to my printer (connected to wireless AP) under Tiger, but can't even do an 'Add Printer' for it after upgrading to Leopard.
Oddly, my printer's Node Name shows up in the Finder under 'Shared'. So it seems that my mac sees the printer. The entire network consists of the mac, wireless AP, and printer.
    Any other ideas? Thanks!

Let me suggest going to this thread on the Airport printing discussion.
    I found two issues:
    1) HP's having problems with file permissions. Run *Disk Repair* first, then download and run the *newest HP printer drivers*.
    2) Apple seems to have introduced something called CUPs. It's new to me and every computer I have that runs on Leopard or was recently upgraded to Leopard has very confusing printing problem, directly connected or wirelessly connected.
The thread above is helpful, but somewhere, I need to learn more about CUPS.
Try putting *http://localhost:631/* in your browser!
As soon as I figure it out, I'll let you know.
I also changed my USB cables to *USB2 cables*. Suddenly, it seems to matter!?

  • MacBook Pro shows up twice under Shared in finder sidebar once as PC

This just started today. I have my iMac and MacBook Pro networked through Airport Extreme. Today my MacBook Pro shows up twice under my iMac finder sidebar. First icon is itself (MacBook), second icon is PC. Both with the same name. Get info shows the second icon as PC Server. I cannot connect to the PC icon, which I'm assuming is a good thing.
Why would this suddenly happen, and how do I get rid of it? I've restarted airport, repaired permissions on both machines. Checked to be sure that only AFP is check under File Sharing on both. Network preference pane WINS shows no servers connected on Airport or Ethernet, etc.
    Anyone?
Appreciate any help with this. I'm definitely not a networking expert

Ok, ive had this problem for ages and i think ive pretty much figured it out, your computer is showing your macbook over your network and through Bonjour (apples own wireless connection) Still not sure why it always shows it as a PC though, or as a server...
Anyway, I ive found where it originated from, if you go to System Preferences>Sharing, at the top you will see your computers name and underneath it will say "Computers on your local network can access your computer at:" and its name will be whatever the 'PC server' is called on your finder sidebar, in your case "tosha". You can test it by changing the name to something like "tosha1" by clicking the edit button, in may cases the extra shared computer will disappear, but, after a while it will reappear and will now have the new name. =[
Sadly I dont know how to stop this but I suggest you take screenshots and go to an apple store, tell them about the problem and hopefully they will have an answer for you, they know everything! And even if they dont, check their machines to see if they have the problem, and if they dont, look at the settings and try and find why.
Im sorry I cant be of much help but im getting closer to the bottom of this and im sure its linked to bonjour! Ill keep you posted if anything else happens!
p.s. Im not a networking expert either! Im just as stumped as everyone else!

  • Automatically list NFS shares under SHARED in Finder

Hi, I created an Automator workflow to mount NFS shares from a linux server. After executing the skript, the shares will be listed under SHARED in the Finder. Is there a way to automatically detect the NFS shares on the server to list it in the Finder without executing the Automator skript on every startup?

It should be possible to do so using an [Avahi service|http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Avahi#NFS]. I'm using a similar service for my [netatalk/AFP share to show up in Finder|http://www.disgruntled-dutch.com/2007/general/how-to-get-your-linux-base d-afp-server-to-show-up-correctly-in-leopards-new-finder]. It says in the article that this doesn't work 10.5 onwards but links to an article with a [workaround|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071116042238744]. I hope that this will be helpful.

  • Unfamiliar device under "SHARED" in finder

When I opened finder today there is an unfamiliar PC server listed under shared. I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it.

I have had the same thing happen to me today. I have a Time Capsule wireless network, attached to a local service provider's cable (new yesterday) for internet service. When I "get info" on the unfamiliar device, it tells me it is a PC Server, but nothing else. it is named "your-1a4d29f243" How do I get rid of it? And how did it get on my network? I use passwords to connect my other devices.

  • Mac Book Pro not showing under shared section on my iMac anymore.

I used to be able to access my files on my MacBook Pro remotly with my iMac through file sharing eventhough the lid was closed. Now, everytime I close the lid of my MacBook pro it also disappears from the shared section on the iMac.
At the end I would like to be able to access my MacBook with my iMac remotely at home, so I can keep the laptop closed and placed behind the iMac. Thats the idea. And I had it working somehow before. So why is my laptop playing dead all of the sudden when I close the lid?
Another thing that got effected by this sudden change is the charging of my Apple devices (iphone/shuffle) when closing the lid. it just stops. Sometimes it doesnt charge the phone and other times it charges the phone but its switched off? I mean ***? I turn it on and its 100%. So there must be something wrong with the MacBook pro.
(additional info...I had the screen recently fixed since it had a crack in it, but it everything was working when I got it back....now out of the blue it stops)
Dont get me wrong...when the lids up everything is working perfectly. Charging is good. Sharing is working and I can use back to my mac on my iMac. Close the lid and the problems pop up.

Actually Pages for Mac and Pages for iOS are two completely different versions of the app and have nothing to do with one another. They have to be purchased separately, for the Mac from the Mac App Store and for your iPad from the iTunes App Store.
You may have a corrupted index file. Try reindexing your iMac and then see if it will update Pages. Others have solved this issue by repairing the permissions on their Mac. Thirdly, if the other two ideas prove fruitless, create a Test user account on your iMac, log into the Test account, sign into the Mac App Store and then see if you can update Pages.

  • Multiple Macs... sharing same iTunes folder....

Not sure if there's a solution or not....
I have an external drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme. it's a shared drive for 3 of my Macs. That's where the iTunes folder is located for all machines as well (The drive is specifically for shared media).
Now... if computer 1 downloads or imports new music to their iTunes list, it's auto copied to the external drive in the iTunes folder. But computers 2-3 don't see the new music automatically in their iTunes library. I understand why, but is there ANY solution to "finding new media" within the folder?
Rather than importing the music manually 4 times (3 commputers and 1 with dual accounts), is there a script or does ANYONE have any ideas??
    Thanks in advance!
    MacBook Pro 17", iMac 1.25 GHz G4, iMac 450 MHz G3   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Did you ever come up with a solution for this? I'm trying to do the same thing with my setup, 4 macs with shared external disk over Airport Extreme

  • New-host-5 under "shared" in finder side bar after Lion update

Just upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion.
Intermittently I am now seeing "new-host-5" in the SHARED section of the side bar of a finder window. Switching WiFi off and back on makes it disappear and not come back.
Any help on tracking this down is much appreciated.
    Thanks, C

Just did a little more digging and found that the IP address for "new-host-5" is the same as the one for my iMac, who is also on the network. Curiously enough the machine also shows up in the SHARED section with it's real name. Very puzzeling!

  • HT202213 I cannot get home sharing to work.  the shared computers do not show under SHARED even though it says homesharing is on.

I am trying to use home sharing.  both computers say that homesharing is on but i cannot see anythying under SHARED

Did you enable Home Sharing using the same AppleID on both computers?

  • Unknown libraries showing under SHARED?

Hi all, I launched iTunes earlier and noticed a library named "Brendans Limewire folder" under the SHARED tab on the left. It went away eventually and another popped up named "infamous robs library" with a ton of songs that were playable. When right clicking on the library i have the option to open in new window or "disconnect". I don't have a clue where these libraries came from and I'm the only person that has ever used this PC. I'm hoping these libraries and hundreds of songs aren't actually saved to my hard drive? Any help at all is appreciated.

Other iTunes users on your local network.
    iTunes prefs > Sharing.
Uncheck *Look for Shared libraries* and uncheck *Share my library on my local network*.
