Multiple users with iPhoto

I just bought a new iMac, which I have set up as a family computer. My wife and I are both administrators, and I created managed accounts for my kids. If we all want to use iPhoto, will it create and maintain separate iPhoto libraries for each user, or is there just one library? I was also wondering if the same is true for iTunes. Basically, I have not set up a Mac for multiple users before and am admittedly rather clueless in this area.
Thanks!

The default behavior is to create separate libraries for each app and user - under their "home" directories.
iTunes lets you do Home Sharing -- sharing downloaded files among users, iPhoto does not.
Its possible to set up shared libraries, but that's a pretty advanced topic.

  • There are multiple users with the same display name

    Hi,
We have a user and when she get an item assigned to her she sees the following alert:
"There are multiple users with the same display name USERNAME and at least one of them does not have read permissions to some of the files"
Now I looked in the database and when I run the following query with the username:
     SELECT
         [ProviderDisplayName]
        ,[DisplayName]
        ,[HasDisplayName]
        ,[Domain]
        ,[AccountName]
        ,[UniqueUserId]
        ,[LastSync]
FROM [Tfs_Configuration].[dbo].[tbl_Identity] where displayname like '%USERNAME%'
Then I get 2 same usernames back, How can I get rid of one of them ? When I access TFS trough the portal I only find 1 occurence of this user.
    We use VS2013 and TFS2013 update 4
    Best regards

    Hi DSW,
    Thanks for your post.
In your query result, please check if these two users have the same Account Name. if they are two different Account Name in result, it indicate there’s two users have the same display name in your AD, please check that two users’ information in
your AD. We suggest change one user’s display name in AD.

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

  • Is it possible to setup multiple users with the exact same calendar?

I am trying to setup exchange with 3 users where each user sees exactly the same calendar all precisely in sync. I don't need the users to have their own calendar. Sharing a calendar from 1 user to the others does not work for me because I need it to be
in sync with all the users' mobile devices as well as outlook.
    Thanks

    Hi dneray,
Base on my knowledge, it is impossible to setup multiple users with the exact same calendar.
However, as a workaround, you can try to set up a shared mailbox within these users as a shared calendar for them to share.

I'm assuming you have the lastet OSX version 10.9 "Mavericks." Here are some useful links from Apple I think will help:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14414
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14099
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14280
    and a video:

I suspect you have a newer iMac than the pre-2006 models this forum covers (the forum labels are unbelieveably vague). If you can confirm that yours is newer than 2005, I can ask the Hosts to move you the the forum for current iMacs, which gets many more views.

  • How do I set up multiple users with different configurations

I have a Mac Pro that is shared by multiple users. Some edit using Avid Media Composer 6.0, and some edit using Final Cut Pro 7. Our client monitor is connected using a Matrox MX02 Mini. When I install the latest drivers for the Matrox MX02, I can use the client monitor with Media Composer, but not Final Cut Pro 7. When I back-rev the drivers to support Final Cut Pro 7, I can't use the MX02 in Media Composer.
Is there a way to set up two users -- one for Avid editing and one for Final Cut editing -- that will each load different sets of drivers?
    Thanks!

Not in one boot system. The only way I can think of doing what you want is to dual-boot - ie, either partition a single drive with two volumes, one for each configuration, or, if you can, use separate physical drives. The Matrox drivers are loaded at the system level, not the user level.
If you have a spare drive, you would just clone your system across using Carbon Copy Cloner / SuperDuper, then boot to the second system and adjust the drivers as necessary.

  • How do you update software when there are multiple users with different (unknown) apple ID's?

We are a college with different users borrowing 'loaner' Macbooks.
several users with different ID's have installed software that is now tied to that Machines serial number, and cannot be updated or removed apparently. We are trying to update iPhoto for use with iBook author, but it was installed by an unknown user and cannot be removed.

The only practical solution is to wipe and re-provision the units when they're returned.

  • What's the problem with having multiple users with the same UID?

I've got three edit systems connected to the SAN using open directory off our server.
I want all edit systems to have read/write access to everything created. I don't need to protect anything from any of the systems. With all three systems logged on using the same user, I never have to change permissions.
The other cool thing about this is that Final Cut Pro will let me know if someone else is modifying a project that I have open with the warning:
“The project "projectName" has been modified externally. If another user is working on it, saving will overwrite their changes. Do you still want to save?”
    This sounds great, right?
RED FLAG!!!! Apple gives the warning in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302450
"You should not allow two users with the same UID to access an Xsan volume at the same time."
So why is it bad to have two (or more) users with the same UID?
I can see that in some situations it means that you can't prevent people from read/write privileges. But I don't want to restrict privileges.
What am I missing? With all of these warnings, it seems like if I do this my edit systems could all explode or something. Please help me understand the potential ramifications of having three users have the same UID.

    Hi Russell,
    1) If you have OD set up and "editor" has UID 1111, then when they log in to any machine that's bound to OD as editor, they will get UID 1111. Therefore, there won't be any of these permission errors. This is typically the recommended approach.
    2) I assume you mean "You'd prefer to not using open directory?" Whatever the case, OD isn't mandatory with Xsan -- it's just that with multiple user accounts, managing them centrally tends to be easier. For 3 or 4 accounts and 3 or 4 machines maybe it's no big deal. If you go larger, it could get a lot more complicated. That said, if you set it up such that each machine has the exact same set of users (as you said, Mary = UID 502, Fred = UID 503, William = UID 504), then you can do what you want. Mary can log in from multiple machines at the same time, and in general you won't have permissions problems. Of course, if you try and read and write the same file from multiple workstations at the same time, you will get file locking issues, which will prohibit somebody from successfully writing the file.
File locking issues are different from general permissions errors. The former basically says "hey, someone else is editing this file. Therefore I won't let you edit it right now... you can read it if you want though." Permissions means somebody saves it, and Xsan thinks you saved it and own the file, when you really don't.

Thanks for asking, but FormsCentral currently does not support this.

  • Multiple users with ios5?

With iOS 5, Is it now possible to have multiple users for one iPad?

This seems very odd to me. New iPad 2 owner and for all the talk of a "no pc era" coming you would think the iPad iOS would build a feature for this. My Fiancé and I own iPhones and just got an iPad together, would be really nice if we could both have our data on the iPad.

  • Multiple users with the same iPad?

My daughter has lent me her iPad.  It's currently linked to her Apple account.  If I try registering the iPad on my Apple account, will I be violating the license or screwing up her ability to use the device independently?  Can the iPad work independently with two seperate users with two separate Apple accounts?

if you are registering your own apple id over your daughter, her account wont be able to put back in for at least 90 days. iPad will notify this fact, you this whenever you try to enter new apple id in the existing user ipads.
another way that would help is to home share your itunes content and allow photo stream features on the ipad, so you will get your contents into your daugther ipad without entering your apple id.
ipad cannot work with two user. you wont be violating any license.

  • Why do I see multiple users with the same name as an output of "users"

Recently, I found a peculiar thing when I typed "users" in the terminal. There were three users with the same name. After restart(power went down) I now see only one user there. Is this normal and why it can be happening? Why are there duplicate users sometimes?

    alphaniner wrote:
Well now I'm confused. My xterm (xfce4-terminal) has that option disabled but I still get a user entry for each tab.
OT: you can run who to get a better idea of what each user is associated with. Eg. with Xorg on tty1 and terminal open with two tabs:
    $ who
    testing tty1 2013-12-11 08:55
    testing pts/0 2013-12-11 08:55 (:0.0)
    testing pts/1 2013-12-11 15:51 (:0.0)
Oh there is another option on mine besides "Run command as a login shell" called "Update login records when command is launched" I have them both disabled. Check for a second option maybe.

  • Multiple Users on iPhoto Library & Time Machine

I'm trying to figure out a way to set up my iphoto library so that it can be fully accessed by both my wife and myself from our separate accounts on a single machine. I have tried putting it in the shared folder and editing its permissions to no avail.
I understand I can do this with an external drive or a virtual volume, but I don't think either will back up properly with Time Machine. I have a large photo collection and don't want an entire virtual volume being backed up every time a photo is changed. But I definitely do want our pictures regularly backed up.
Is there any way in OSX to have both incremental backups and shared access to an iphoto library?
    Thanks kindly for any help.

With iPhoto '09 version 8.0.2 and later you can simply move the iPhoto library to the shared folder and launch iPhoto in each account with the option key depressed and point to the new location -- http://db.tidbits.com/article/10204

  • Best way to set up a Mac laptop for multiple users with AD logins

I am setting up a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 that will be used as a "loaner" notebook for meetings, etc. The computer will be used internally at our company, so users will be logged into our network. Active Directory is set up on this computer to allow all domain users to log in using their own user name and password; this approach helps meet our company's security standards (we want to avoid using one common login or account for all users).
While this approach seems to fit our needs, it causes problems when it comes to running applications. For instance, each new user is prompted to enter first-time usage information when launching an application (forcing them to contemplate registration information, various settings, etc.). I've given "everyone" read-write privileges to the HD > Library and the Applications folder, but this does not solve anything and may not be a good approach anyway.
I would welcome any advice on the best way to set up this computer for multiple users logging in via Active Directory. Thanks!

Where are you installing the third party applications? It sounds like they are being installed in the 'User 1' account, rather than the /Applications folder (admin or not, one user normally can not see into another user's folders). Repairing permissions only works for applications that have a file in /Library/Receipts, not on folders in general, so you would need to check the permissions for the folders in question.

  • Multiple users with single dialog..

    Hi,
How to handle multiple user activities in dialog programming ?
In my custom dialog transaction, there is very little probability that two or more will be working on the same data. But in case by chance, two people try to modify the same data, how should that be handled ?
    Can anyone explain in detail?
    thks

Yes, you should always, regardless of chances, use lock objects when updating database tables.  These are generated in the ABAP dictionary for each table, or you could define it to cover mulitple tables at one time.  It will also generate functions modules, ENQUEUE_<name of lock object> and DEQUEUE_<name of lock object>, which you use to Lock, and Unlock..
