Multitasking bar? Does this constantly use data?

Hi,
Unfortunetly AT&T did away with their unlimated data feature so I'm stuck with the 2gb per month plan. My question is when I leave an app in the multitask bar does this constantly use my data? I have notifications turned off and I have my mail set up for me to manually load it. It's becoming a pain to have to keep an eye on which apps are running and to not be able to shut the app completely down when I close it, instead I'm going to my MTB every 10 min. to kill apps.
Thank you!

I popped into the AT&T store this afternoon and confirmed that I could keep my unlimited plan and still have a family plan. Which is nice, not sure I need it but it does offer another choice.
I've been relatively uninspired by AT&T's service in my area and researching changing to the Droid X as well. It does have a few features that are attractive like a replaceable battery, storage on a replaceable card and so on. The display on the iPhone 4 is simply amazing though and I already prefer the interface of the iPhone to the Droids, so it's probably going to be an upgrade instead of a switch of providers.
The video conferencing on the iPhone is a nice feature but since it's required to be over wifi on each connection, the chances of both my wife and myself being on wifi at the same time unless we're in the house together are slim to none and slim left town. So, great feature, not very practical.
I did find one thing unique today, the sales guy at AT&T had his own iPhone 4 and we did a couple of speed tests while I was there vs my 3GS. Now we were both on 3G at the time and really the speeds should have been almost identical as the processor should have nothing to do with the transmission speed over 3G but his phone blew mine away. A bit on the download but a huge amount on the upload. Kind of makes me wonder if there's been something wrong with my 3Gs that I wasn't really aware of?

  • I have an Apple Macbook and will be backing up the entire system to an external hard drive utilizing the Time Machine application. when I am doing this, will the data on the external drive that I am using be erased?

I have an Apple Macbook and will be backing up the entire system in order to upgrade to a newer OS. I will be using an external hard drive to do this and there is already data on it. To complete the backup, i will be using the Time Machine application. Does this application wipe out all of the existing data on the external hard drive, or will it create a new "folder" for the backup?
    thank you

No, but as steve359 states you should use a dedicated hard drive for backups. It you need a temporary backup then you can use the drive provided it has sufficient space for all your data on the hard drive.
When Time Machine finds that the drive has data on it already it may decide to erase the drive before continuing, which is another reason to use a dedicated drive.

  • Why does "itunes accounts" use data with all settings OFF?

Does anyone know how to keep "iTunes accounts" under system from using cellular data?
    I have already:
    1. Toggled OFF all settings in the "Use cellular data for" menu.
    2. Turned OFF all automatic downloads and any other options under iTunes/app store settings.
    3. Turned OFF Background App refresh.
    4. Turned OFF all options under iCloud sync menu.
Right now, the only thing that keeps "iTunes accounts" from pulling cellular data is turning Cellular Data completely OFF, but I don't want to do this because I lose some messaging and voicemail functions and I need to be able to use Find My Phone. I have two identical iPhone 5c's on this account. One is running iOs 8.1.2 and the above settings control it's data usage nicely. The other phone is running iOs 8.1.3 and this one uses 50-100 mb a day even with all the above settings off and the phone almost always on wifi.
I am aware that the phone will lose it's wifi connection when asleep, but that shouldn't be a problem if all the apps/settings are already set not to use cellular data. What am I missing. I've read a bunch of threads on this issue and they all suggest settings I already have OFF.

My personal phone is on 8.1.2. My daughter's phone is 8.1.3.
It is her phone that is currently having this problem, but I reported it under my account; sorry for the confusion.
My phone has had some data problems in the past, but I have been able to control them by keeping almost all data options OFF and the overall switch ON. My usage is back to less than 50 mb per month which makes sense since my phone is almost always on wifi and I don't use data dense applications.
Everything about my daughter's phone is the same as mine except for the 8.1.3 upgrade. She does use things like Instagram more than I do, but I have them all set to not use Cellular Data and the option to change these settings is locked. When I look at the usage on her phone, it isn't her apps that are pulling unexpected data; it's "iTunes accounts" under system services. All the options under iTunes/App Store (auto downloads, home sharing, etc.) and all the iCloud options are already OFF.

  • Why does this constantly freeze up when I am in the middle of a game?

I was in the middle of playing a yahtzee game and all of a sudden the game froze up? WHY? I realize this is a free service, but come on guys get it together! Or I'll find a different internet provider.

There are a variety of reasons this may happen. Here are the first things you might try to correct that problem:
    1. Quit the app. Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your iPhone. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
    2. If that didn't work quite the app again and then delete the app. I'm assuming that the problematic app is not one of the default apps that came on the iPhone. To delete an app tap and hold on the app until it begins to juggle and displays an X. Tap on the X and confirm that you want to delete the app. Then download the app again from the app store. Be sure you back up your data first. You will not be charged to download the app again so long as you are using the same Apple ID that you used to download it originally.
    3. If those attempts still failed contact the developer of the app to determine if they are aware of the problem and whether they have a fix planned for it.

  • Why does my phone use data with cellular data turned off?

I have problems with my iPhone 5 using data on its own. It usually happens at night, with all the apps closed and plugged in to charge (should be connected to my wifi). Recently, I started turning off my cellular data any time I'm at home out of desperation to save my data. Last night, my phone used 6MB of data with my data off, plugged in. I use My Data Manager to track, it matches up with AT&T's record of my data usage, so I'm pretty sure the app is not wrong. I have the 200MB plan, so I have to be very careful and it's incredibly frustrating to wake up and find 6MB gone when cellular data was turned off. Does anyone know what's going on?  I haven't bothered calling Apple or AT&T, I never get anywhere with either one.

I'm not familiar with My Data Manager but from the name I would think it would tell you what app or apps have used the data and that might help narrow down the problem. If it doesn't have that information, you can go to Settings > Cellular > Use Cellular Data For and that shows usage by each app and if you click on System Services in that list it will also give details of that usage. The numbers are since you last reset the statistics (bottom of that screen). With a little time and detective work you may be able to identify the cause.
Also, there have been many discussions on various internet forums of AT&T (and other) reporting of the time of data usage not matching the actual time of the use. The usage numbers over a number of days for example are accurate but usage reported at 2AM may actually be a summary of some types of use that happened the previous day.

  • Sort issue on graph (line/bar) X-AXIS when using dates

I have a line chart using dates on the x-axis, formatted as mm/dd/yyyy. This worked fine until the new year and now the sort order displays 01/xx/2008 before (left of) a 12/xx/2007 date.
My quick fix was to change the format to yyyy-mm-dd, but I really don't like the way this looks.
    Is there a better solution?

    Hi Jason,
here is the steps you should follow in order ro set the sorting for barchart.
    1. go to chart expert
    2. click on data tab
    3. select the field in the selected list of report columns on which you have to sort, then the order button will be enabled
    4. click on the order button
5 it will open new window by name "chart sort order", where you can set the sorting order(ascending order, descending order, specified order or the original order) for the selected report column.
I hope this will help you..

  • Scroll Bar does not show using Mac OS X 10.10.1, Thunderbird 31.3.0

I upgraded to Thunderbird 31.3.0, running Mac OS X 10.10.1. The scroll bars in both the inbox window and the message text window seem to have disappeared. There does not seem to be any support available on this.

Ok so you most likely have an add-on or theme that is not compatible with the current version. Check in the add-ons manager for updates. Disable all add-ons and enable one at a time until the culprit is found.
How does OSX 10.10.1 handle scroll bars. Perhaps appearing and disappearing is a new mac feature. Windows hiding menu bars is an infuriating OS feature, perhaps it is the mac users turn.
    </blockquote>
Turns out, this is the case.
If I drag two fingers over the Track Pad, the Scroll Bar does appear. If I don't let go of the Track Pad, and roll over to the Track Bar it stays up. I hate it, but now I have a work-around.
    Thank you, Matt.

  • Iphone is constantly using data when no apps are running

Has anyone else got this issue, i cannot turn on my 3g as it is eating data all the time.

    Hello All Who Read This!
I just bought an iPhone 5 on the 21st of March. I ate through 850 MB's in 12 days. I read up on the issue of data consumption looking for tips to conserve data. I did not know there was a problem.
This morning I found out that I was leaking data very little, but daily it accumulates. I am in Barcelona, Spain. I do not have a contract, I am on a prepaid Yoigo carrier.
I happened upon an article/blog by Robert Parks at snnyc.com "problems persist in ios 6.1.2.".
Although his situation did not relate to me, I tried a few tests on my own to see if I could stop the data leak without turning off my celular data and possibly push notifications, I think I found a solution that might help someone:
In ios 6.1.3 goto Settings/Mail, Contacts,Calenders and scroll down to Calendars and turn off " New Invitation Alerts" and also turn off "Shared Calendar Alerts".
My Cellular Network Data seems to be behaving. I only see a change in MB used when I open an ap that uses data.

    Hi spider1950,
As long as you have the most recent update of iTunes (11.0.4), you should be able to print a jewel case insert directly from iTunes. You may find the following page useful:

  • Does location services use data

I was wondering whether Location Services uses data and if so how much?

No, it uses the location of the nearest wi-fi router as determined by Apple's database, which is usually, but not always, up-to-date.

  • Resetting to Factory Settings... Does this wipe my data?

I have a second generation iPod Touch (8 GB). It isn't the run with the volume bar at the side, but it is the one that shipped with the expanded software package that Apple preloaded after the original iPod Touch units were released (I bought February 08).
Here's my question: I no longer need/use it as I have an iPhone. I am thinking of donating/selling it, and I want to know if I restore it to factory settings in iTunes, will that safely erase all my data, and make it unrecoverable to anyone who gets it? Or is there something else I need to do to protect my information/privacy? Also, would someone be able to use that iPod and get into my iTunes account via the serial number?
    Thanks so much!!
    --J

It's best to use Settings -> General -> Reset All Content and Settings.
This feature resets all settings to their defaults and removes all your information and media on your iPod touch by overwriting the data stored on iPod touch.
Important: You can’t use iPod touch while data is being overwritten. This can take up to four hours or more, depending on the model and storage capacity of your iPod touch, so you should have it connected to a charger.

  • Why does my phone use data when hooked up to wifi in the middle of the night?

My phone and my husbands phone both get charged with data usage even though they are hooked up to a wifi in the middle of the night. It has all added up to and overage charge this month. We have  never used this much data!

sandybenzi, that's a good observation. Have you downloaded 3rd party applications to your device? If so, applications can update periodically. You may access the Google play store application to verify if  your applications are set up for automatic update.

  • What does this odd use of NVL in a comparison do?

The TOAD query optimizer recommended changing this test:
    (NOT (sites.pay_site_flag = 'N' AND sites.purchasing_site_flag = 'Y'))
    to this:
    (sites.pay_site_flag &lt;&gt; NVL ('N', UID) OR sites.purchasing_sige_flag &lt;&gt; 'Y')
both sites.pay_site_flag and sites.purchasing_site_flag allow nulls, so the logical contrapositive is not valid.
Testing seems to show that the query optimizer test returns the same result as the original test, but why? I don't understand how NVL ('N', UID) can ever evaluate to anything but 'N', and how can that be useful in this comparison?

    >
That's true, and I did construct the truth table. It's equally true, if I substitute a literal 'N' in place of NVL ('N', UID), so what subtle difference does it make if the NVL function is used instead of the literal 'N'? I suppose it's possible that the TOAD optimizer just pulled that out of the air for no reason, but it seems unlikely.
    >
For this example the use of NVL appears to be unnecessary. Can't tell for certain since the example that uses NVL also uses 'UID' which isn't explained anywhere; where did TOAD come up with 'UID'?
The most likely explanation is that the template that TOAD uses includes NVL to handle cases where the NVL actually is necessary. And for cases where NVL isn't needed, and doesn't alter the results, it doesn't matter if it is left in. That could allow TOAD to use one template for all use cases rather than add code to determine the use cases where NVL isn't needed.
    Note that your original example
(NOT (sites.pay_site_flag = 'N' AND sites.purchasing_site_flag = 'Y'))is often misinterpreted as meaning the NEGATION of the inner AND condition but testing will show that it is not. You should always use a truth table and full testing to make sure you get exactly what you want.
Since there are two variables and they can each have three values there are nine possible combinations
with q as (SELECT 1 TEST, 'N' PFLAG, 'Y' SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 2 TEST, 'Y' PFLAG, 'Y' SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 3 TEST, NULL PFLAG, 'Y' SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 4 TEST, 'N' PFLAG, 'N' SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 5 TEST, 'Y' PFLAG, 'N' SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 6 TEST, NULL PFLAG, 'N' SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 7 TEST, 'N' PFLAG, NULL SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 8 TEST, 'Y' PFLAG, NULL SFLAG FROM DUAL
               UNION ALL
SELECT 9 TEST, NULL PFLAG, NULL SFLAG FROM DUAL
    SELECT * FROM Q WHERE
       (NOT (PFLAG = 'N' AND SFLAG = 'Y'))
    TEST,PFLAG,SFLAG
    2,Y,Y
    4,N,N
    5,Y,N
    6,,N
    8,Y,
                  The inner AND condition
       (PFLAG = 'N' AND SFLAG = 'Y')is TEST #1 of 9 possible combinations.
It is natural to think that if you negate that with the NOT condition that you should get records that correspond to the other 8 conditions.
But if you look at the above results you can see that you only get results matching tests 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8.
Those DO NOT include tests 3 (PFLAG IS NULL and SFLAG = 'Y'), 7 (PFLAG = 'N' but SFLAG IS NULL) or 9 (both flags are NULL).
That is the way NULLs can affect things.
If you really need the NEGATION of the inner AND condition you need to specifically code for the null value combinations.
to mean 'include all records with pay_site_flag IN (null, 'Y') OR purchasing_site_flag IN (null, 'N') but that is NOT what your condition does.
    The example provides
If you did the truth table and testing

  • Why does this loop used to write values to the parallel port keep going forever?

Have a look at this VI guys. I'm trying to send a sequence of bits (used to trigger an IC). I'm interested in the last bit of the data port (D0). so I'm sending either 0 or 1 to that pin to trigger the IC. it works, but the problem is that the loop keeps going forever and i cant control it. if i send 3 to the loop count, I'm expecting to get: 1 0 1 0 1 0, but it doesnt stop and keeps going forever.
It seems that the problem is not with the loop. because i deleted the loop and just left the flat sequence so that it executes only once, but still it keeps repeating. How can i make the flat sequence execute only once?
I'm using a parallel port monitor (parmon.exe) and a LED connected to D0 of the parallel port to check.
If anybody has an alternative or better method to send the bits to the parallel port, I'd be very thankful.Message Edited by krayzie on 05-14-2005 04:33 PM

It works just fine here. Place an indicator to the iteration terminal [i] to watch how things progress. Do the number ever increase above N-1 to what you wire to N? I don't think so!
Also make sure you don't run the VI with the "Continuous run" button. In this case the VI would immediately restart whenever it is finished. use the "Run" button.
