Must Time Capsule be connected by cable to the DSL Router?

The answer to this question maybe obvious, but not to me: I have a router DSL, via which I get my WiFi internet connection to 3 MACs at home. I'd like to use the versatility of Time Capsule to back up wireless and even do so for each MAC that I have. My question is: *_must Time Capsule be connected by cable to the DSL Router_*, or will it detect it wirelessly once it is plugged into the power mains?

I think that if your router supports [WDS|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WirelessDistributionSystem] then you might be able to get it to work. The problem is that WDS is not a very good standard so there's no guarantee it'll work.
[Here is a site|http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/002812.html] discusses the topic at length.

The router and modem are connected t oa PC but all the other computers on the network are Apple.

You should be able to substitute the TC for the netgear.. although you might find the wireless range is somewhat less.
Power down both the netgear and the cable modem.. plus all the clients.. leave the modem off for 5min at least.. maybe 15min..
Put the TC in place of the Netgear.. you do not need to change the name, although PC will work better if you keep everything SMB compatible.. that means both TC name and wireless names, short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
Power up the modem.. wait 2min then power up the TC, then the rest of the clients.. check in airport utility to make sure the TC got public iP on  the wan interface.

Why can’t I print from my iPhone 4 to my brother 8890dw printer which is connected to my time capsule/network via ethernet cable???  My iPhone does not even locate my printer, even though I have no problem printing from my Mac to the same printer.

Typing in all caps indicates shouting, is considered rude and is difficult to read.  Many simply do not read such posts.
You would need an airprint enabled printer or an app that proides printing function.

The wireless cellular device would need to have an Ethernet port, to provide an Ethernet signal to the Time Capsule's WAN port.

  • Can the time capsule works without WLAN cable connected to my DSL router?

Cna the Time capsule work without WLAN cable connection to DSL router?

WLAN is usually used for wireless LAN .. plainly you mean WAN port ..
How do you expect to get internet if the TC is not connected to the internet?
The TC can work stand alone.. true enough but that will then involve considerable issues in setting up two different IP addressing regimes .. you can just bridge the TC and use it as WAP and switch plus hdd without having to route.

I presently have a linksys wifi router, can i connect a time capsule through cat 5 cable for my apple products and to boost my signal .i live in a three story home and my linksys is in the basement. I have one cable on the top floor where most of my computers/ipads are.

can i connect a time capsule through cat 5 cable for my apple products and to boost my signal
Yes, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name and password as the Linksys wireless network.

A PC can have more issues connecting than a Mac.
But it really should not matter.. so just try it in situ.. press and hold the reset.. once it starts up, it will return to default IP, 10.0.1.1 the PC should then be able to find it via the airport utility.
If not drag it over to the Mac and plug in there by ethernet.. or since it is a laptop, really should not be that difficult to drag the Laptop and plug it into the TC.
Important thing is to get access to the TC.
The Mac if it is running lion, then you MUST download and install 5.6 airport utility to do anything useful.

  • I can't get my airport time capsule to connect to the internet

I can't get my new airport time capsule to connect to the internet. It works fine with my linksys router

We cannot help with that amount of info..
What internet type and modem do you have? Exact modem make and model may help.
Is the linksys router also the modem? You do know there is no modem in the TC?
How is the Linksys authenticating if it is plugged into the modem??
If cable did you shut down the cable modem for at least 20min to change the router.. this is always required with cable system.. often the time is longer.. one hour or overnight even.

  • How do I set up my AirPort Time Capsule to connect wirelessly to my VisionNet modem?

I'm trying to get my AirPort Time Capsule to work with my landline phone DSL company. They supply all customers with a VisionNet modem/router. My problem is getting the Capsule to work wirelessly with the VisionNet modem. I want to put the Capsule on the other end of the house so I have internet connectivity all around my house. I have no idea how to do this. Is there anyone out there who is tech savvy enough to help me? Your help and response will be truly appreciated.

It will not work.. Apple routers cannot wirelessly extend other brands..
You must plug the TC into the modem router with ethernet.. and put it in bridge mode. You can then get another apple router, like an express or extreme (or even another TC) to extend its wireless.
This is fairly typical btw if you are thinking apple is being exclusivist.. well they are but the fact is wireless repeater (WDS is normal term), is not a standard and so every company does what is right in their own eyes.
WDS is not cross platform.. you always need to stick to the same brands.. or use universal wireless repeaters. But these are not recommended as they are generally unreliable and have other impacts on the network.
Run ethernet or use EOP (homeplug) adapters to connect the TC to the VisionNet modem.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

Best thing to do is connect your computer to the Time Capsule (LAN port) using an ethernet cable. Once connected, run Airport Utility and it should let you know why the light is yellow and attempt to fix the problem. If the problem persists, you should either re-configure the Time Capsule properly or conduct a hard reset and start the configuration over from the factory settings.

  • Time Capsule not working with cable modem

I have a WebStar modem using Cox cable internet. When I plug the ethernet cable into my Macbook directly out of the modem, I have internet. When I plug the Ethernet cable into my Time Capsule - I have no internet and the lights on the modem do not flash. The modem is not recognizing the TC or the TC is not recognizing the modem. Any solutions??? Please help.....

    It's the former.
Power everything down, including the modem. While it's powered down connect the TC's WAN port to the modem. After a few moments of peaceful contemplation, power up the modem and then the TC.
You should then be able to configure the TC with Airport Utility, if you haven't already done so. If you can't, and you need to reach the outside world again, resist the temptation to connect your computer directly to the cable modem. Connect a computer to the TC's LAN port instead.
Here's the applicable explanation from Apple:
*You've done everything right, but still can't connect to the Internet. Why?*
It's because the modem locked onto your iMac, and it will ignore anything else you plug into it until it's been reset. If you were to plug the iMac back into the modem, it would still connect to the Internet.
Fortunately, resetting a broadband modem is usually very easy -- just unplug its power supply, wait a moment, and plug it back in. After its indicator lights have gone through their startup routine, you should do the same to the AirPort base station.
Odds are that you can connect to the Internet now.

  • MacBook to Time Capsule gigabit connection

Posted March 25, 2008 16:41 Reply With QuoteEdit or Delete Message
I recently bought a 500GB Time Capsule to go on a mixed client home network and I have to say I love it. I tried a cheap alternative of a Belkin Network USB Hub first but that just didn't cut the mustard. The Time Capsule does everything I want. Having gotten to that point, I was happy for about a day, then I got to thinking...
Though my Netgear router only supports 100mbit/s wired, my MacBook supports 1000mbit/s and that connects to the Time Capsule which also supports 1000mbit/s. The MacBook connects to the router using the Time Capsule as a relay so if I'm just transferring files between the MacBook and the Time Capsule, surely I can take advantage of the gigabit connection between them, right?
I changed my cat5 cable for a cat6 one (I was looking for a cat5e but came across the cat6 one first, so what the heck). In System Profiler on the MacBook, I saw it was only showing 100mbit/s on the ethernet connection so I went into System Preferences -> Network -> Built-in Ethernet -> Advanced -> Ethernet and changed the default 100mbit/s to 1000baseT, full-duplex, flow-control, with a MTU of standard(1500) whatever the heck that is. I saved the settings, rebooted the MacBook and Time Machine (not straight away but eventually, you get where this is going) and tried my speed test again.
The test was to copy a 700MB Ubuntu iso file from the Time Capsule to the desktop. For comparison, I did the same test from the Time Capsule onto my (gasp) PC which only has 100mbps network card. On the PC, this transfer took around 4:45. On the MacBook (which I was hoping would be around 30-60 seconds) it took 4:30, the same as before I changed the ethernet settings to the gigabit option.
For reference, the MacBook is a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I had a look around the Time Capsule console to see if I could find anything about setting it to work at 1000mbit/s but couldn't see any options and so assume it handles that automatically.
Am I missing something blindingly obvious or do I just have crazy expectations?
    Any help is gratefully received.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm fortunate enough to have an Apple store that just opened in my town a couple of weeks ago so I popped in there on my lunchbreak and had a chat with someone at the genius bar. The suggestion was a not too surprising 'disconnect everything else from the network' so it's just the MacBook connected to the Time Capsule with no other complicating factors and take it from there. This is something which should have (but didn't) occur to me last night.
On trying that suggestion this evening though, it's not quite that simple. I removed all the other connections and promptly couldn't connect to the Time Capsule. Not surprising really because my Netgear router (now not plugged in) is acting as the DHCP server. So I plugged the router back into the Time Capsule, tried again and the connection was restored. Unfortunately so was the transfer rate.
I assume that the Time Capsule has the capability of acting as the DHCP server on the network, but I'd rather not redesign the whole network architecture to find a way around this.
The thought occurred, if both the MacBook and the Time Capsule had static IP addresses, they'd connect to each other without the router being connected, wouldn't they? Well, it was a nice idea, but it didn't work. Even though I'd set the IP address of the Time Capsule and knew what it was, when I tried to ping it from the MacBook, it couldn't be found. I'm sure for the more network aware of you out there that would be blatantly obvious, but it seemed like a reasonable hypothesis to me.
It's beginning to look a lot like the cure is going to be a lot more painful than putting up with a slower network connection than I should have.

  • Time Capsule not connected to Ethernet?

    Hello,
I walked in to my office two days ago and the amber light was blinking with an occasional green (on my Time Capsule).
The reported error was that the ethernet was not connected. It was. I ultimately disconnected the ethernet cable from my Time Capsule and connected directly to my iMac. After some configuring issues I was on line. Did what I needed to do and shut down.
Next day  I decided to try powering down the Time Capsule and re-connected the Ethernet cable. Everything worked fine just like it has for well over a year now.
I figured maybe the cleaning crew bumped the power and everything was fine.
    No dice.
Came in this morning and the Time Capsule is blinking amber again (with an occasional green) same issue. "no ethernet connected."
Now I am connected directly to the IMac and asking for help.
    Please.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    P

On our TC, the TC shows a green light even when it refuses our computer/device wireless connections and says the password is invalid.  However, I left the house for three hours and am now on my laptop and it is apparently working normally.  I plan to watch it very closely for the next week and see what happens.
I have read on here (and other Mac-centric review sites) that TC's are very unreliable, have slower than average wireless connections (and short ranges in apartments, especially through walls/several rooms), and fail within 18 months -- all of which is considered "normal" lifespan by Apple (as confirmed by the Apple employees at the San Diego Store in Fashion Valley).
I don't plan on purchasing another TC, and likely not even an Airport extreme.  I will look at buying a more reliable wireless router with stronger (farther) connections and connection ranges. I love apple products and have used them to the exclusion of others for over 15 years, but this is really annoying (and my friends have much better wireless networks!).

  • Time Capsule Not connecting to internet

Hello. So recently I received a new iMac for Christmas and knowing that my wireless network is setup with MAC address filtering, I used my working laptop to connect to both the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to add the iMac to the network. That worked and my iMac has been able to connect to the network no problem.
Let me explain what my network setup is before I tell about the problem:
I have the latest generation Airport Extreme (Dual Band II) and a first generation Time Capsule (1TB).
The Airport Extreme is connected to the internet by cable modem and the Airport is the main router sharing a single IP address.
I connected the Time Capsule to the Airport Extreme through Ethernet and set it up automatically with Airport Utility to extend over ethernet.
Now up untill now, I had no problems but since I got my iMac, I haven't been able to ever get a list of the Airport devices connected to the network, while connected to the Time Capsule, however, when connected to the Airport Extreme 5GHz network, I'm having no problems.
And today, the Time Capsule wouldn't connect to the internet over wifi, and all other devices wouldn't either. Of course, I tried to connect to the base station, but Airport Utility wouldn't display any devices connected. This happened with my MacBook as well.
Since connecting to the 5GHz network from the Airport Extreme, I have no problems with internet or Airport Utility. After a while though, the Time Capsule connected to the internet again.
Would someone shed some light on the situation?

I normally use the manual setup mode so I'm not sure what exactly is the end-state when choosing to extend a wireless network with the Time Capsule (TC) connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet.
I am guessing that the AirPort Utility configured the TC as a bridge to allow the AEBSn to still provide both NAT & DHCP services for all wired or wireless clients connected to either router.
Let's start by double-checking some settings on your TC. Please provide the following TC settings from the AirPort Utility:
AirPort Utility > Select the TC > Manual Setup > Time Capsule > Wireless
    o Wireless Mode = ?
o Allow this network to be extended = checked or unchecked?
    o Radio Mode = ?
    o Radio Channel Selection = ?
    Time Capsule > Access Control
    o MAC Address Access Control = ?
    Internet > Internet Connection
    o Connect Using = ?
    o Connection Sharing = ?
    Internet > TCP/IP
    o Configure IPv4 = ?
