MVP List #66: Jan 26 - Feb 1, 2013

The Verizon Community Forums Most Valuable Posting List is where we recognize great work and words happening every day right here on our community. We know the success as a community is based on the continual and lively contributions of our valued members. Each member provides special and unique contributions and this is the place we try to highlight members that have stood out during the previous week.
Thread of the Week:
Our Thread of the Week discusses what to do if your TV settings keep changing- seemingly by themself! In this instance, DarkDune's FiOS TV keeps switching back to 720p after it's set at 1080i and he can't figure out why. Thanks to everyone who helped solve this issue- including the OP who built upon all the advice given and figured this out!
Post of the Week:
Prisaz wrote our Post of the Week in this thread asking how to watch movies from a PC on the TV. Huge thanks to Prisaz for helping out and for linking to all the great information he learned while attended CES as a guest of Verizon.
Member of the Week:
Charliebarrett is our Member of the Week with this great post detailing how to make sure the YouTube widget on FiOS TV is working properly. Thanks Charlie for the great instructions!

Thank you!  I noticed the MVP symbol next to my name and used my fabled tenacity to find myself on this list.  I hope my message will be of help to the possibly one other person who prefers an old TV and doesn't have HD.

    Patrick,
Thanks my session verify function was causing the problem and I have removed it temporarily from my authentication scheme.
I am using the "check_timeout" function that was developed a number of years ago as part of a "How To" section in the old HTMLdb days. I knew there was an issue with this routine as the newer versions of the browsers handle cookies differently and I was going to redevelop it at some point. Do you know which part of the function causes the issue?
    Many Thanks,
    Jon

    Thread of the Week:
Here's a great thread that explains a few different ways to set up a network.  This thread is a great example of the original poster and a Community Leader working together to quick and efficiently solve an issue.
    Post of the Week:
Mardin wrote our Post of the Week- and supplied his own answer!  Mardin was set to leave Verizon and go to another provider and put in a request to have his phone number ported over. However, he changed his mind and decided to stay as a Verizon customer (good choice ) and, unfortunately, found his phone number in limbo.  Find out how he solved this here.
    Member of the Week:
Thanks to TNS_2- our new Member of the Week!  Your help in this thread about Quantum speeds and whether or not YouTube is a good gauge of speed is helpful and informative.

    Hi prisaz
Unfortunately, a user's IP is considered personal information.  If they post a copy/paste, we are able to edit it out. However, when it's in an image, we have to remove the entire thing.  But when we message the user, we ask them to obscure their IP and to re-post the image.
Good reason, makes sense. But couldn't you edit the image (with an image editor) and cover up the IP address? I do that kind of thing all the time with images I post here to protect my privacy (although as you know I occasionally do screw that up ). Would save the confusion and need for the user to repost the image.

    Thread of the Week:
Do you live and die by your DVR like I do? With two little kids at home, prime time viewing is often interrupted by cries for the bathroom, a drink or a back rub so I never get to watch TV shows when they actually air. That means that DVR space is at a premium and I don't have time for it to not work properly. That is why I picked a thread that discusses what to do when you delete a TV show from your DVR'd show list, but it still persists on your list. Special thanks to lacticacidtrip for help in this thread!
    Post of the Week:
Our post of the week is supplied by Comet2011L4 and deals with various ways to get better speeds from your wireless connection. Laid out in a simple format, the suggestions are easy enough for even me to understand!
    Member of the Week:
Our member of the week is tlb for this very helpful, very thorough series of posts about changing email settings in Eudora. tlb battled some issues getting used to working in the Forums, but persevered to supply some great information and help a lot of people as they transitioned their email settings. Thanks so much for all the help, tlb!
By the way- the editing requirements are in place because we found a lot of newbies would come here, ask a question, receive some replies and then come back and change their original post- which made for a very frustrating experience for everyone! Thanks for your understanding!

I think Justin's picture should have won this one. Really I am not being modest! If I wanted I could have a Rev. E on one Channel, the first Rev. I on another Channel, the Second Rev. I on the third channel, and the 300N on the forth channel. I think I would need to figure out the overlap and spread them out, just to mess up the Neighbors.
Don't even ask how I ended up with two Rev. I Actiontec routers. The Rev. E I was told to dispose of, but at one time it was fine for a MOCA bridge. Now I have no MOCA.

    Thread of the Week:
One of the great mysteries of the Internet is why you can easily access every web site in the world- except the one you really need to get to.  I never knew why that happened- all I knew was that it made me crazy.  That is- that's all I knew until I read through this thread. Thanks to all who helped explain the issue and solve it!

Well-just in case you make friends like mine, Lordofring has a great explanation of how to change the language settings on your IMG guide back to English.

I am honored to be on the list, however I wish it wasn't for the reason it was.
Unmentioned in your post is the outpouring of support for the Funimation channel.  This channels cancellation, due to what is quickly turning out to be a less than factual reason of 'low viewership' from Verizon, has mobilized many of your customers.  In fact, I'm sure that most of the people in your list this week were kudo'ed for posts in 1 of 2 threads:
    Funimation Canceled!
    Save Funimation Petition
If we are to look at the pure numbers, at the time of this writing those 2 threads combined for a total of nearly 950 kudos and 3800+ views.  Even more telling:  198 of the 200 most kudo'ed posts are people SUPPORTING Funimation Channel and against Verizon's decision to cancel the channel.  (http://forums.verizon.com/t5/kudos/leaderboardpage/board-id/FiOS_TV_Entertainment/timerange/one_mont...
IMHO (and no offense to Justin and his very helpful document) either of these 2 would have made a much more appropriate 'Thread of the week'.

  • Cancellation fee? *edit, contract ends Feb. 2013*

I understand that there is a fee to cancel before a contract is over, but we have been unable to get any decent assistance for our phone issues..
We upgraded to an LG Ally in February of 2010 ** sorry, it was 2011.. contract ends Feb. 2013** with a 24-month contract.  What would our cancellation fee be right now?
We've had numerous issues with our phoneSSS.  Verizon has replace it with the same model  3 or 4 times (we honestly lost count!!), and they refuse to replace it with a different model unless we pay an extra $100 or more.  So much for having the extended warranty.
The CSRs continue to claim that they've "never heard of any issues with this phone" or that "that is a great phone" etc. etc. when there are many forums and reviews about how bad it actually is.. One even had the gall to say that we must have gotten lemons all 3 or 4 times.
We are fed up and just want to get away from Verizon.  There are days that the phone doesn't work at all and we are not getting our money's worth by keeping it.  The list of issues with this phone is LONG.

Sorry.. after I posted I realized my typo.. thanks for replying though.

looks like your data warehouse install is borked. unfortunately there's not much more we can determine based on this. you're obviously missing a lot of the stored procedures that service the default reports, but there isn't any reasoning.
The error from above is the generic "a bad thing, recorded elsewhere, has occurred" that you usually get from Web Services. Try running the report from the DW machine to see if you get better error details, or
    enable remote errors.

As of today, Feb 1 2013, Java 1.6 is no longer supported by Oracle.
