My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard (via my MacBookPro), either from the HD or DVD drive.  Can't get it to run Hardware Test.  Disk Utility says disk OK - files are there. What can I do?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

  • IMac Won't Boot - Won't Repair - Even after Erase and Install

One day my iMac acts weird. Apps bounce but don't open. I restart. I get greyscreen and spinning gear for 1.5 hours. Uh-oh.
Disk Utility run from OS X disk: cannot repair - "Invalid Node Structure" and "Invalid Key Length" - multiple instances.
So I erase volume and install. All goes fine. Install Tiger. Use upgrade to Leopard disk. Leopard boots and apps work (I try Safari and web connects) so I do software update thinking it's fixed.
Huge software update to 10.5.7 plus sundry others. After update reports "Could not install updates" - then it lists a load of updates (keynote, iwork etc) that it cant install.
Say's it'll restart. You guessed it: grey screen and spinning gear for 1.5 hours. Won't boot after forced restart either.
Run disk utility from OS X disk again: same errors, "node"; "key length" etc.
What now? Is 10.5.7 the problem? I have apple care so no major sweat but I need to get this thing operating baby.
PS - my boot camp partition that I have had for months and months still boots. So the HD isn't totally dead. At least can rule that out.

    Suggest you do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives.
    4. Select the OS X volume (sub-entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
See if this fixes the problem. If it doesn't then there is some corruption in the directory block that reformatting or zeroing is just not able to fix. In such a case the resolution would be to repartition the drive from scratch. However, this will result in the loss of the Boot Camp partition as well.
Unless your Leopard disc is an upgrade-only disc, then you can install Leopard directly - no need to install Tiger first.

  • About to Erase and Re-Install Snow Leopard. Anything I should know?

I'm about to erase and re-install Snow Leopard on my 2009 21.5' iMac. Something got snarled up during the migration process from my old 2006 iMac to this new one and things have been steadily getting more and more "weird" over time, so it's time for a clean slate.
I have a few specific questions and would be grateful for any other tips you may have regarding this operation as I've done it on Windoze computers many times but never done it on a Mac for obvious reasons
My specific questions are as follows:
    1. If I archive my various Mail inboxes, can I just put them back after the re-install and have all my messages back again?
    2. Does anyone know how to save Firefox Bookmarks, as it doesn't have an export option like Safari.
    3. Any other things I should be aware of.
Your help and suggestions will be much appreciated

After what you want to do, you'll still get the same permissions repair report. Ignore it as detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 (which doesn't include the recent JavaVM warnings).
Your bootstraps solution doesn't hold water. OK. Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your test account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

You need iTunes version 11 for iOS 7.
iTunes version 11 requires OS X 10.6.8 or later...

  • My Mac is three years old and has crashed about 10 times. I have had to erase and re install Snow Leopard every time, yet it keeps happening.

I have communicated with apple care every time and they keep telling me there is no problem,so why does it keep crashing. I took it in for repair under warrenty and they told me there was nothing wrong with it yet it crashed again two weeks later and has crashed another 5 times since then,I have to erase and re install each time. It has now crashed again , i have re installed snow leopard and all i get is the spinning wheel and nothing loads..Im over it. I have several mac products including two other imacs that are running fine..

Run Apple Hardware Test on your computer, the next time your machine crashes try running disk utility on the hard drive.  You shouldn't need to reinstall the OS each time your system crashes, if that the case then you could have a bad hard drive.

  • Disk utility says internal HDF is fine, but iBook can't boot from it

I've tried everything I can think of to fix this, even wiping my HD and re-installing OS X, but nothing works. It started yesterday when I wanted to access the WEP key for my Base Station to get a new device to connect to it. When I tried to start Airport Utility, it told me I need update to a new version first. So I let it turn Software Updater on and check for updates. It had been a while since I had updated it, so there were a bunch of updates, but I didn't want to wait all day so I told it to only do the Safari and Airport Utility updates. Everything seemed to go just fine until after the computer restarted to complete the installations. After the installations finished, the computer couldn't find its hard drive to boot from. It just brings up a folder icon that flashes between the Mac face and a question mark. I booted it just fine off of the 10.5 disc that I have and used Disk Utility on the internal HD, but it doesn't think anything is wrong. I even used Disk Warrior on it, but that didn't help either. I tried re-installing OS X using the "Archive and Install" setting, but that didn't work either. I then hooked it up in firewire terminal mode to another computer I have (which worked just fine) and backed up everything I wanted to keep, after which I booted from the 10.5 disc again, wiped the HD, and re-installed OS X from scratch. It still won't work, and I am stumped as to what the problem could be. Any help would be very much appreciated.

When you wiped the computer's internal hard disk drive, with Disk Utility
did you try to erase everything, then apply a Partition Map (APM) and
then, Reformat (HFS+) on the hard disk drive, which was at least zero
    overwritten one-pass via Secure Erase?
The most thorough erase method via Disk Utility's options, will require
the Partition Map to be re-applied, before a Format is written on HDDs.
With an aging portable computer, the hard disk drive can be near failure
and still pass the basic tests; even a booted Apple Hardware Test. They
do wear out, and depending on use patterns and age, some stop sooner.
So it may be safe to say the machine may need a replacement HDD.
There is an extra option in *Disk Warrior* (accessed by option key)
to make the utility go deeper into some of the technical functions; some
users of that utility have mentioned this. However I don't have or use it.
For DW to work, it has to be the correct support version as OS X installed.
+"...when running DiskWarrior, if you simply hold down the Option key on the keyboard,+
+the Rebuild button will change into a Scavenge button. Scavenge is a more-thorough+
+scan and repair than is Rebuild..."+ - an option, when using DW from boot disc.
There may be some corruption and damage to the hard disk drive; and
if there are sectors damaged that had not been in use before the new
software was installed, then the Mac may have written on a bad area.
Sometimes, the zero-overwrite function of Disk Utility (ie: secure erase)
can help make some areas re-useable; or make them inert, avoided.
You mention the items you tried to install and update; for the Safari to
work, would have required a later Quicktime and other system parts.
Some items are required to be installed together; an important path.
Usually, an OS X Combo update, then Security update, java updates,
Quicktime update, (then re-run Software Update to see newer list) &
browsers, flash player, then anything else; would follow. The long list
would include any newer iLife update segments, in groups, & so on.
Could be the hard disk drive was near full and the rest of the update
files (plus anything else on the drive?) may have been too much for it.
But a completely erased and zero-overwritten hard disk drive, with a
partition map and then format, installed by Disk Utility, then the new
complete install of the system, should be helpful to see if the computer
may run awhile longer with the original hard disk drive. I suspect it's bad.
Sorry, but at this late hour I haven't all that many authentic ideas and
am tired enough to not go into an extensive google search on topics
that may point to similar circumstances, or Support articles/documents
on the topic. Troubleshooting includes increasing the odds of losing
any old data which may have been on the hard disk drive; so hopefully
you have backed up anything important before the last update attempt.

Sometimes, it pays to go to Apple Support Downloads to look for just
the single software update item by name, for your OS X version, and
    get that. Then, run see if the one item (a 'standalone' file) will work;
sometimes, those may require one or more companion updates, too.
I've saved the larger Combo, security java items, etc, to CD/DVD for
offline complete re-installations; then I have these on hand.

  • Repeated crashes, disk utility says disk is fine

My Macbook Pro (2007-era?), running Snow Leopard, has been suffering frequent crashes for the past several months.  There appears to be no consistent trigger, but I will suddenly get the down-from-the-top screen of death that tells me I need to press and hold the power button to turn it off.  When it starts up again, the problem appears to have something to do with spinlocks and mutex'es.  I have tried repairing disk permissions, but that doesn't work.  Interestingly, if I repair disk permissions twice in a row, the second time still reports that it is changing permissions.  When I run "check disk" from the disk utility, it says my disk is fine.  Even booting from the startup disk and running "repair disk" reports that the disk is fine.  Any ideas?
Side note 1:  The battery no longer works correctly, so if the power cord is unplugged the computer runs for a minute or two and then shuts off unexpectedly.  I attempt to avoid this, and when it does happen I immediately repair disk permissions.
Side note 2:  I have MATLAB R2010b installed, and this often crashes itself, reporting a segmentation fault.  The MATLAB crashes and system crashes do not appear temporally correlated, and the system will crash even when MATLAB is not running.  Deleting and reinstalling MATLAB does not solve the problem.
    Thanks for any help!

    Sample crash report:

  • Time Machine reports error, Disk Utility says disk is OK!

    Hi,
Time Machine has stopped backing up giving an error message as follows:
"The backup was not performed because an error occured while copying files to the backup disk.
The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm not sure how temporary it means, nor how much later - but this has been happening for the last few days and I have switched off and on, rebooted, closed all apps, changed usb port, changed usb cable, etc. to try and get it working again. Still get the same error.
When I run the backup disk through Disk Utility it says the disk is fine - "The volume Time Machine appears to be OK."
Anyone had this or similar before? Is there a known cause that I can fix to get the backups working again. Don't really want to lose the time machine history by formatting and starting again.
    Cheers.

Fixed - looked at the error log in the console, found error messages re files it was not able to back up, excluded that folder from Time Machine. Now works OK.

  • Disk Utility says disk can't be repaired but it is still working

Recently my MacBook Air had some performance problems--many programs crashing, etc.  I ran Disk Utility and it came back saying the disk is corrupt and needs to be repaired.  I rebooted and ran the Disk Utility repair function but Disk Utility said the volume could not be repaired and recommended that I back everything up, wipe the drive, and restore.
The thing is that my computer is now functioning normally.  Disk Utility still says there's a huge and unrepairable problem, but aside from that, everything is working fine.
I have a time machine backup, so I could wipe and restore the drive fairly easily, but it would take some time to do it.  I'm in the middle of some important things for work and so I'd rather put this off for a couple of weeks, if I can.
A few questions: (1) is there other software, aside from Disk Uility, that I should try to repair the disk?  (2) How much of a ticking time-bomb do I have with this problem?  Though reformatitng and restoring would be a hassle right now, it is less of a hassle than if my computer were to fail completely minutes before a presentation.  So, if this is an urgent problem, then I'll probably address it now.  But, if Apples have been known to soldier on for months despite error messages like what I've received, then I may take my chances and wait to reformat/restore until a more convenient time.
Any and all thoughts appreciated, thanks!

    Thanks for these replies.
I've got regular time machine backups and just backed up some of my data by copying some key folders to an external drive.  I'm bit paranoid about backup integrity and would ideally like to do another full backup to a different drive using a system other than time machine, in the event that something goes wrong with the time machine backup.  Any recommendations on good and affordable backup software to do a backup of my TM backup?
One other question: I seem to encounter problems like this pretty frequently.  I'd say once a year or so, my drive fails completely or gets near enough to failing that I have to wipe and restore.  (I've never had a TM backup fail to work, though the last go around there were some hiccups which has led to my backup paranoia.)  I've had this happen on multiple computers, so I'm becoming pretty convinced that the problem lies somewhere in my data.  Is it possible (even likely) that there's something in my data causing this recurring problem?  If so, is there anything I might be able to do to try and pinpoint and address this problem?  I'd love to go one year without having to wipe/restore my machine!
For a while I thought I just had bad luck.  But I think this is like the 4th or 5th time this has happened in the past 4 years and every time, I'm restoring from a backup, so I come back with the same data.  It's the one constant since I've had 3 different machines over this same time period.

  • Won't boot, even after fresh OS install?!

So, my MacBook Pro started crashing, didn't seem to follow a pattern, it would just randomly freeze. Then it got to the point of not even booting up. It would stay on the light grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel would stop.
I booted it from the Snow Leopard OS disk to try and repair it, check disk permissions etc, crashed again (screen flashing very fast). Then formatted the drive (zero out all data) to try and get it a fresh and clean as possible, that completed, so went to install the OS, that completed, but when it restarted after installing it crashed at the same point, only now a darker grey screen wipes down telling me to turn off my machine.
The hard drive isn't making any strange noises so I don't think thats the problem, but other than swapping that out for another one I have run out of ideas. Has anyone had a similar problem?
It's a 17'' MBP (not unibody). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

If it crashed while booted from the installation disc, then you have a hardware fault. Take it to an Apple Store for testing.

  • Itunes constantly crashes and won't open even efter removal and re-install.

It states "AppCrash" as the reason. I've removed all the hardware, and reinstalled it just to have itunes quickly open upon startup, immediately close again and state it was an app crash.

Thank you all for your input and sympathy! I did reset the PRAM before taking it in on Sunday, but that unfortunately didn't do it. I also tried the erase-then-install route, but the machine only gets through varying degrees of the install before crashing.
I hauled it up to the Apple Store (150 mi. RT, but great guys/fast service) who also believed it was RAM, swapped out the apparently 3rd party RAM (who would think you would have to specify APPLE RAM to an Apple Specialist/Reseller?!). Turns out it still crashes, so back I went on Monday. It's now waiting on a logic board and processor.
I've always bought direct from Apple before, but tried to save a few $ this time. Needless to say, those saved $ have been spent several times over in time and mileage, some of which would have been spent regardless of where the machine came from. However, had I bought direct, I could probably get a new machine more quickly at the store. If the machine isn't running wthin a week I will send it back west for an exchange. Thank you again. I'll follow up here when this is resolved.

    Hi Mike
This is called a kernel panic, similar to s 'blue screen of death' on Windows. When you say you reinstalled 3 times, do you mean the OS or the Update?
When does this kernel panic appear? You may have a hardware issue if it's happening on boot.

  • Disk Utility says no problems but Diskwarrior disagrees

Need some advice. I ran Disk Utility yesterday to verify my drives before upgrading to 10.4.4 on my Dual 2GHz. It came up with some errors but said it couldn't fix them. Went to Diskwarrior which also said it couldn't fix it. Did a safe boot which is supposed to force an 'fsck' but the system never fully booted from that, probably failed at the fsck (the fans turned on full blast at the grey bootup screen then eventually powered off by itself). When I rebooted, I ran Disk Utility and it now reports the drive is fine. Diskwarrior still scoffs at that though.
Disk Utility said something about File Allocation Table mismatch.
Diskwarrior said the directory structure could not be repaired.
SMART says the drive is fine.
TechTool Pro reports a Bitmap mismatch and could not repair the drive.
Thing is, I don't see any problems with the drive at all. System boots fine and there are no corrupt files. It's a 3 month old 300GB Seagate so I don't think it's a hardware problem. But I've had some kernel panics related to my video iPod (the one where the G5 kernel panics if you have low space left on the iPod) which is where I'm guessing this all started from.
I've left it for now with Retrospect backing up the drive to a new external 250GB drive I had to buy just for this. I was planning on formatting the problem drive, testing it again and then restoring the Retrospect backup. (The only issue I've had with Retrospect is I Duplicated the problem drive to that new drive and had about 4000 files with different dates. I'm hoping that doesn't happen using the Backup function instead.)
Is this the right path? Or anybody think it could be a hardware issue? I've never done a full system volume backup with Retrospect, will I run into problems making the restored drive bootable again? And last, are there any other programs I should try?
BTW, I thought Journaling was supposed to fix all this!!
