MicroSoft has issued an Update for Windows, that is causing problems with Displays. The following is from Talbot McInnis, who tracked down this problem, and offers a fix:
"MS bulliten MS13-057. Specifically, on XP kb2834904 and on windows 7 kb2803821 is causing a problem
For us, it occurs when decoding WMV9 files. Not all uses of WMV decoding are affected, but I confirmed that when connecting the WMV decode DLL to a sample grabber for RGB32 video, the frames arrive black on top, so that points directly to decoding internals of the WMV Decode dll.
You can uninstall these windows updates to resolve your problem."
There are several threads on the problem that this Update is causing on the PrE and PrPro Forums, so one can get more details. So far, there is not another fix from either MS, or Adobe.

Only portrait splash screen (no landscape) for app
Is it possible for a DPS app created in App Builder to only have a portrait splash screen?
As in, our company does not want a landscape splash screen embedded.
Portrait splash screen could be rotated; however, this would add unnecessary size to the footprint of the download.For my portrait-only apps I always create both splash screens, using rotated portrait as landscape.
The overhead on the app size is minimal, and not worth worrying about. -
10.6 -- All Office 2008 apps hang at splash screen. FontCache Tool runaway
Did an upgrade of 10.5 to 10.6. Nearly everything works fine. Can't launch Office 2008. All apps hang at their splash screen; usually at Optimizing Font Menu Performance.
Once an app is opened, in Activity viewer you'll find a process called FontCache Tool using >90% of the CPU (on my Core Duo MBP at least, YMMV). I suppose it's saying a lot about 10.6 that the computer is completely usable with that runaway process. Even after forcing the office app(s) to quit, Font Cache Tool stays running until it's killed manually.
I have yet to find out if FontCache Tool is an Apple or MS process. I think it's microsoft.
This happens under multiple users.
This happens after reinstalling Office.
This was an Office 2008 upgrade from Office 2004.
After reinstall, and installing Rosetta, office 2004 will run, but office 2008 will not.
Office 2008 is 12.2.1.
I am running FontAgent Pro for font management, and so font book sees certain activated fonts as duplicates. (Validate fonts shows duplicate warnings but no errors). FontAgent Pro 4.0.3 is listed as Snow Leopard compatible. So is Office 2008.
I have yet to do a clean SL install, which I'm guessing will fix it, but I'm curious if there is a sub-sledgehammer approach, or if I am the only person with this issue.
Other probably irrelevant facts include that the computer is bound to both Active Directory and OS X OpenDirectory servers. Open Directory is running on Leopard 10.5 Server. It does have some managed preferences, including those for Office (e.g. to set default to .doc rather than .docx) but the situation persists even after removing those managed preferences.
Normally really specific problems are easy to isolate and solve, but I'm at a loss.

keppieHey i think i figured it out.
Had the same prob. 10.6 12.2.1 entourage hanging.
Renamed FCT, instantly prompted that a font was corrupt. Removed the corrupt Font: KufiStandardGK.ttf << this just happened to be my one corrupt font.
A little troubleshooting i did leading up to this, I read your post and my situation was the same. I use Linotype X to manage fonts. I disabled all but the minimum fonts (i moved them into a folder font_trouble in the same folder)
I also deleted every office pref/plist setting i thought relevant to startup which triggered the microsoft setup assistant (watched via the console app) and it ran through its check and then immediately the fontcachetool started and went awol on cpu time. Once i killed it--during the starting up of word and entourage... timing may be unrelated but i did them at nearly the same time.
Ps. Your post was extremely well written and I apologize for my stream of consciousness, less than stelllar response... hope this helps if not feel free to ping me for more details on what I did...

The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting issues with iOS not functioning as expected, which should help in resolving your issue with the camera in Messages:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.

Anyone else suffering from their curve 8520 os: 5.0.0.681 randomly crashing and only showing a white screen as well as it being unable to reboot unless it is plugged in? It often occurs when I'm playing media, using apps and maps. Had the same problem with my previous phone so it was sent in for repair and replaced but I'm still suffering from the same problem with the replacement handset! Any ideas how it fix this?

Since you got a replacement it the same old Battery you are using or its a new Battery with your replacement device.Sometime this white Screen or unable to reboot happen because of weak battery .I suggest if you can arrange a good quality Battery then try running your device a few hours to see if the problem is within the device or its just Battery issue.

T450s startup takes 35 seconds before showing splash screen. (11 sec wake-up)
The follwing are my problems:1. When starting up the machine, it takes about 35 seconds before the first screen activity appears (Lenovo splash screen). After that it boots quite normal.
2. When waking out of sleep mode it takes 11 seconds before I see the power led stopping to "breath" and the screen wakes up.
It feels like this is a hardware/bios related issue, as (so far I know) hdd/ssd is only accessed after the bios has loaded and has finished its hardware checks. When sticking in a bootable usb it only starts flickering after the bios had loaded on screen.
Question:
Does anyone has an idea why my laptop is waiting so long to boot or to wake up? I don't mind waiting a bit, but waiting for 35 seconds + the normal boot time is really annoying. Specially with the fact that the laptop doesn't show any sign of live for 35 seconds after briefly lighting up the keyboard backlights. The wake-up delay is also very annoying since even my 7 year old BSOD laptop wakes-up faster, and I'm using sleep mode a lot.
Some origins that I'm thinking about:
- Hardware check during initial hardware startup does not yet recognize a dedicated GPU card. (POST: Power On Self Test)
- I don't think this is a problem with my software since the problems occurs before reading any media.
Things I tryed already:
- Reset bios.
- Start in legacy mode.
- Bios update
- rebuilding MBR (although I don't expect this to be the problem.)
- Refreshing windows installation although I don't expect this to be the problem.)
This problem was already at the beginning (with origenal hardware):
From the first time I started the laptop (so even with the HDD) I noticed it took quite long to start. I remember pressing the ON/OFF button multiple times and thinking I did something wrong, when suddenly the "Lenovo" splash screen appeared.
I hope someone can help me!My problems have been solved! An engineer contacted me that they have recieved a spare mainboard and they wanted to make an appointment. I gave them the adress where I worked the next day since I'm very mobile, and the next day an engineer came by. He seemed like a skilled IBM engineer and tested my machine and came to the same conclusion as me. He then did a few tests to see if the problem was caused by something else then the mainboard but ended by replacing my mainboard with good care. After the replacement the the boot and wake-up time was normal like it should be. I'm very pleased by the service Lenovo ThinkPad has given me. I need to add that when I called for support I got someone on the line that could not really understand me, neighter dutch or english. But that was also duo a bad connection it seemed.. But after that call I did not really expect this would come to a good end. I was then really suppriced that 5 day's later a dutch engineer manager called me to make a appointment.

ITunes U catalogues only show black screen.
I have tried re-booting my iPad. Deleting it and re-installing. Even erasing all data and content. Without back up and back up. Yet iTunes U catalogues only show a black screen. And the bar with the top charts and all that at the bottom of the screen. Also with the search button at the top. Any one know how do do this?
I mean how to fix it.

X60 only show "lenovo screen" upon startup

When I start my X60 laptop it only show the "black Lenovo screen", and it never starts windows xp. Any ideas what might cause this behaviour.As said check whether the hdd is still been detected in bios, and run a diagnostic on it from the bios menu.

Show splash screen for x amount of seconds
Is there a better way to show a splash screen for x seconds than putting it in a while loop? It just seems so inefficiant and it uses a lot of processing power. This is what I have: long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();

[Solved] SDDM only shows background screen
All's in the title: at startup, SDDM only shows the background screen, without any list of users (which have UIDs starting from 1000) or login prompt.
As a comparison GDM works fine, whereas KDM just gave a black screen (but I gave up on it as this is for a new install so I'm going straight to KF5).
Any help would be welcome.
