My Book for Mac photo retrieval

I have WD My Book for Mac as an external hard drive for my photos.  I just selected to retrieve all my photos "back to the original location on my computer".  But they are not back in iPhoto.  Do I need to import photos into iPhoto from a location on my hard drive?

Hello,
Can you please provide the model number of your drive.
I haven't seen this case with a USB drive on a Mac.
Have you tried resetting the unit.
Is the drive showing on the disk utilities.

  • Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive?

Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive? Apple support tech tried to tell me it wasn't possible and that the only NAS Time Machine could back up to is the Time Capsule, but I'm not buying it. I know it's doable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which External HDDs will work and which ones won't.  If not My Book for Mac, is there an External HDD that will work? (Running OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks, btw...)

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

  • Time Machine backup very slow on WD My Book For Mac external HD

I have been using a Western Digital 1 TB external HD (My Book For Mac) to backup my data today for the first time, using their SmartWare software. Everything went smoothly, I backed up 91 GB of data in 2-3 hours.
At the same time, I have also Time Machine activated, which started backing up my files a while ago, but it is crawling at 8 MB per minute. A quick calculation tells me it will take 180 hours to back up 90 GB (?).
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Are SmartWare and TimeMachine supposed to be run exclusive of each other?
    2. If I just ran TimeMachine, why is it so slow? I use a USB 2.0 connection that worked fine for the My Book's own software.
    Thanks for your help!

You should first repartition and format the drive. Most likely it is setup for use on Windows. Try this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Do not use the WD software. If it's you wish to create a bootable backup of your drive as well as keep a TM backup, then you should create two partitions on the drive. One for your non-TM backup and one for TM. For the bootable backup use third-party software such as SuperDuper!, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SilverKeeper - Download at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Note that many WD drive systems cannot be used for bootable backups. You can find information related to this at the WD web site.

  • Is a WD My Book for Mac compatible with OS Yosemite?

Is there an External Hard Drive that works with OS Yosemite. I bought a WD My Book for Mac External Hard Drive, but it appears from what I have since read that it isn't compatible with OS Yosemite.

Although Yosemite isn't specifically mentioned as one of the operating systems for which the WD My Book for Mac external hard drive is compatible, I have been able to complete an initial backup with the drive after designating the appropriate settings in System Preferences for my iMac.
Yes, as you should have been able to. When a company like WD (or Seagate, Hitachi, etc.) say they're not compatible with a particular OS, they mean their supplied disk utilities haven't been updated yet. It has nothing to do with the physical drive itself. And you really don't ever want to use the software they include for backups, speeding up disk access or anything else. Delete all of that junk.
I have to ask. What do you mean by appropriate settings in System Preferences for my iMac ? Time Machine I presume?

  • Outlook 2011 for Mac stops retrieving new e-mail

I have both Outlook 2011 for Mac and Apple Mac tied to the same Gmail account via IMAP. After a few hours, Outlook stops retrieving new e-mail while Apple Mail continues retrieving new e-mail with no problem. I've already deleted the Gmail account from Outlook and recreated it. What could be causing this? Should Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac be re-installed? Does Outlook 2011 create a log during the e-mail send/receive process that I can review?

  • Why is my WD My Book for Mac not showing up on the finder after installing Mavericks?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks. I have a WD My Book. I had received emails from WD stating that the software from WD had to be removed from the Mac before installing Mavericks. So I waited until I received an email from WD saying they had resolved the issue. I upgraded to Mavericks and used the new Drive Manager and SmartWare software from WD. The software (WD) recognizes my iMac, but the WD My Book does not appear through their software or in the Finder on my iMac.
I've called WD twice and it seems they have no idea what to do. They replied with an email for software to recover my files. But I can't even see the files on the My Book drive to recover them. Is this a Mavericks issue? Do I need to download something from Apple? I don't think the issue is to recover files. It's just that the iMac is not recognizing the drive at all.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Jose.

  • My Book for Mac unmounting before I can do access it

I literally just got this drive today.  I installed the utility software, but not the security software.  All that went well.  I got it registered.  Now the hard drive automatically unmounts before I can do anything with it.  The icon appears on the screen for a few seconds; then disappears.  I uninstalled the software, rebooted, and it keeps doing the same thing.  I've read that others have had similar problems, but haven't seen a viable solution.  It's incredibly frustrating and, quite frankly ridiculous, to have to waste time with this thing when it's a brand new product supposedly designed specifically for use with a Mac.  Any ideas?  If I can't get this thing working by tomorrow, I'm giving up and returning it.   I have a mid-2009 MBP running snow leopard.  Yes, it's old, but it still works just fine, except with this drive.

July 2015 Solution for Multiple Problems with a New ‘My Passport for Mac’ (Note: I am posting this same message in response to several topics in this Forum, since the symptoms sounded similar to mine and I suspect WD software is causing them.) Like many other Users here, I recently bought a new external WD drive. The irony here is that I already own 3 other WD external drives, and they have been running fine for several years on our two Mac computers for photo and backup uses. Not so with this new drive. Following the WD installation steps, I first installed their software WD Drive Utilities and WD Security. And then my confusion started, because I now got the message ‘Error in RAID configuration’, even though I don’t use RAID and had done nothing except plug in the new drive. I ran the WD Drive Utility, Status Check, and my laptop actually crashed! I also saw the new drive mount at first, then spontaneously dismount after a minute or so. I even dismounted the new disk, mounted one of my older disks I have used for several years, and now it reported ‘Error in RAID configuration’, something it had never done before, and when I ran the WD Drive Utility, Status Check, on my older Passport drive my laptop again crashed. Like others here, I wasted a lot of time trying to resolve this, but let me skip all that and get right to what I did to get this new disk (and my old ones) to work correctly again. Solution which worked for me: I uninstalled the WD Drive Utilities software (the entire folder) completely. So far I have not uninstalled the WD Security software, although I have not dared to use it yet and likely never will. To uninstall WD Drive utilities, I used the free app AppCleaner from freemacsoft.net (NOT the app in the Mac App store similarly named App Cleaner; it may work just as well, but I have never used it.) Now that the WD Drive Utility is off my computer, I can use the new WD Passport and all my older Passport drives. I have run Apple’s Disk Utility, Verify, numerous times on the new drive, and using Carbon Copy Cloner I have cloned up to 340 GB to the new Passport drive, followed by Verifying it, without errors or any of the symptoms listed above. WD versions for me were:  WD Drive Utilities 2.0.2.18, which folder contained WDDriveUtilityHelper 1.0.0.16. I hope this helps others on this Forum.

  • Printing Books for a Photo Class

I am a college student in a digital photography class. About 90% of the class is on a Mac and we use iPhoto & Aperture to edit photos. We want to start printing books but before we do, what recommendations do you have for the other 10% of the class? Is there a program that PC users can either purchase or download that will allow them to make books? Thanks for your time.

PC users, as well as Mac users, can make photo books on a variety of online programs. Shutterfly, SharedLink, ImageStation, PhotoWorks all will allow users to create nice bound books. Shutterfly has nice options for page layouts--even more than Apple!

I have been using PSE 3.0 and PSE 5.0 but switched to a mac and now am using PSE 4.0. I can't seem to get the photo bin to work/behave as it does in 3.0/5.0. I use PSE for digital scrapping and used the photo bin to drag images to/for and to store layouts I selected for use in my pages. On the MAC I can't seem to drag anything to the photo bin. Sorry this is a basic question I'm sure...I am not so savvy w/ the MAC environment yet. Please help. Thanks in advance.

  • Reference book for Mac OS X Tiger

Can anyone recommend a good reference manual that goes beyond being a user guide. I haven't used a Unix machine since University (over 10 years ago) and feel I need a comprehensive guide to the inner workings of Tiger. I might even be tempted back into some software development.

Mac OS X Internals: A Systems Approach, by Amit Singh
The book "Mac OS X Internals" (ISBN 0321278542) describes the architecture and design of Apple's operating system. The book is targeted at anybody who is curious about Mac OS X and has a system-level interest in operating systems. At a very high (and simplistic) level, I expect this book to appeal to both those who use Mac OS X, and also those who do not.
The primary audience among the existing users of Mac OS X are those who wish to have a deep and solid understanding of the system's composition and working. This category includes power users, developers, and administrators. Based on the feedback I have received from my earlier writings on Mac OS X, even "non-power" Mac users enjoyed my rather technical descriptions of the system. I expect such readers to find several things of interest in the book.
Among those who do not use Mac OS X, many people might be interested in finding out more about it—out of academic curiosity, to broaden their understanding of the design of modern operating systems, or perhaps because they are contemplating "switching" to Mac OS X. This category could be further broken down into the following (possibly overlapping) categories:
    The Linux community
Other Unix communities, and possibly people from the Windows community
    The academic and research communities
Even people who are anti-Mac, assuming such people would want to read the book to seek potential armament for the rather rampant OS-related religious warfare.
The book's nature is better understood by reading its preface and browsing its table of contents.

  • 'How to' book for Mac version of PSE4

Is there an basic guide published that caters for the Mac version of PSE4? Or am I right in thinking there's nothing currently available?

There is really not a huge difference between the Mac and PC version of any book -- it is a distraction, sure. But if you just make key substitutions (below) and ignore the Organizer stuff, the programs are virtually the same:
    Ctrl = Command (apple)
    Alt = Option
    Shift = Shift
    right-click = Control
If you just read through a book and make those substitutions most other things will fall in place (there is one additional annoying menu on Mac [I'm a Mac user at home, PC at 'work', so no flames] that being the Photoshop Elements menu. These are not additional items, but items moved from other menus--so if you can't find something in a PC book where it belongs, then look for it on that menu). Some people have more or less trouble with the differences between Mac and PC books--they don't bother me at all as I use Mac and PC every day (but curiously I can find myself temporarily lost when I use the one Mac we have at 'work').
Like Barbara said, I don't know that my book is the best to begin with as it does tend to be for advanced users. Some beginning users have had success with it, but it depends on their background (usually those with photography and computer backgrounds do fine).
Barbara...I just can't believe they are not re-printing a successful book! Obviously even the Elements 3 book is still selling. After all theese years in publishing, I still can't figure out the 'wizdom' of publishers. They have to make money, but they might as well make sense! I just finished my 7th book, and it might have been my last had I not done it for Focal Press. They were great to work with! But perhaps this is a discussion for off-list ;-).
