My Book Studio edition 1Tb problems with Leopard

I bought a My Book Studio Edition 1TB to back up to using Time machine from my Mac Pro OS 10.5.8 connected via Firewire.
The drive is described as being able to shut down when the Mac is powered down. It doesn't.
Also the WD Drive Manager supplied doesn't work as it supposed to.
Is this a compatibility problem with the WD My Book drive and Leopard? has anybody else had this problem?
Thanks.

I really don't know. The WD Manager may not work because it may only work with Windows. You may want to try repartitioning and reformatting the drive as follows:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
This should enable it to work with OS X properly. However, only if this is a notebook drive system can it be bus powered. If so then you would have to connect it to a USB port if you want the drive to turn off when the computer is shut down or put to sleep. FireWire ports do not power down when the computer is shut down or asleep.

  • WD My Book Studio Edition 1TB "Unknown Device"

    Hi,
I ust picked up my new WD My Book and followed the instructions for lugging it into my mac G5. I am sing a FW 800 cable but nothing appears. When I look at the system profiler under wirewire it registers that there is a device plugged in but says it is "unknown".
I tried downloading the WD My Book software from wdc.com but there is no change. I have tried all the connections I have but no cigar there either. When I tried downloading the firmware update it asked me to plug the device into the USB, but nothing puops up in Finder or in System profiler when I do so.
I really, really need this device up and going by saturday because I will be using it in studio. Can anyone shed some light on my predicament?
    Thanks...

OK, so if these drives are junk, and we're better off with a different brand, why stop there?
WHICH other brand is the best to use? I read a zillion great reviews of Seagate, bought one, and had tons of problems with it, it's replacement, and finally, after b**ching to the execs, finally got another replacement (& a 1.5TB instead of 1TB). A tech over the phone told me that despite the unit I bought being advertised as Mac-compatible, he told me it is not!
So, they sent me one that is, and it's been working ok for now.
I've read numerous other reviews & feedback on other brands too, and except for some very expensive models, it seems that EVERY brand is both loved & hated by many. Which is as good never spent a minute doing all this research. I figure it's pot luck, best to have at least two external drives for back-up, and keep my fingers crossed.
Do you know any brand that is head & shoulders above all the rest?

  • Time Machine Error with brand new WD My Book Studio Edition

I have a brand new iMac and just bought a new WD My Book Studio Edition 500 gb HD for specific use with my Time Machine. The iMac has a 500 HD is about 3 months old and the WD HD is brand new. I am getting an error when I try to activate and back up with Time Machine that says, " Time Machine Error. This backup is too large for a backup volume. The backup requires 524.4 gb but only 465.5 gb are available. To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine."
I copied the files from the Time Machine to my hard drive to make as much space as possible. I have a capacity of 465.44 GB and 28.48GB of free space on my MacHD. I have a capacity of 465.64 GB and 465.49 GB of free space on my WD. It is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) the way it was originally sold. I have not tried to reformat. Not too sure about how to. But I have tried all of these scenarios.
I have tried the following and nothing works to get Time Machine backing up at all:
    1. I have changed the preferences in Time Machine Options to a smaller file size excluding the applications folder (appx. 12 GB),
    2. I have zapped the P-RAM,
    3. I have reset the index in the Spotlight by putting my Macintosh HD and Time Machine in the Privacy section, let it reindex and then pulled it out, and
    4. I have deleted the preferences in Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
Nothing is working and I bought the HD when I was home visiting in the states and I live in Bogota, Colombia. Quite hard to return HD.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Marsh64

You have a nearly full 500 GB hard drive and you are trying to use TM with a 500 GB hard drive - but the way TimeMachine works, your TimeMachine hard drive should be at least twice the size of your backup data. In other words, to use TM effectively you should have bought a 1 TB external drive.
With a 500 GB drive for backups, you need to determine exactly what has to be backed up and what can be left out. If you open the TimeMachine preferences you'll see that there's an Options button. Click it and you can select folders to exclude from backing up. For example, you might decide that you don't need to back up your music because it is all on your iPod anyway and the Mac OS and your applications are all on CD so those can be left out. By carefully paring the list down you may be able to get your backup data down under 250 GB and if so, then TimeMachine will do the job for you.
Another solution would be to drop TimeMachine as your backup solution and simply use a program such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner (CCC) to perform your backups. There are advantages and disadvantages to each backup method. As you mull your options, don't be afraid to ask more questions.

  • The WD My Book "Studio Edition" 750 gig external drive

Is anyone else out there using/ having trouble with the WD My Book Studio Edition external hard drives?
I'm just wondering because I can't get mine to pop up on the desktop or be recognized in Disk Utility.
It started out working just fine (using firewire 800, 400 and USB2). Now, it's just not popping up at all even with the latest firmware from WD and software updates from Apple (mainly the OS 10.5.5 combo update).
    Just looking for comparisons.
    Thanks.
    Steve

I can't say that I have personal experience with this drive. I know one person who has used a similar WD for a project and has had success.
As for you problem, it sounds like your drive could have some other serious problems. If it is new enough you may want to think about an exchange.
And on that note, a lot of the folks here will say to avoid the WD drives for video work. So if you can actually return it and exchange for something else, that might be better.

  • Airport Extreme & My Book Studio Edition II

    Hi all,
I'm thinking about connecting a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II to my Airport Extreme base station. The caveat is that I would like to configure the drive as RAID-1 (drive mirroring).
On one hand, the Airport Extreme doesn't seem to officially support RAID drives, but on the other had common wisdom seems to be that RAID is support as long as the RAID partitioning is done inside of the drive itself.
Since this is confusing, I'm wondering whether anybody here has any advice or, even better, can confirm that the Aiport Extreme work with Western Digital's My Book Studio Edition II in RAID-1 mode.
    Thanks!
    -Bernd

    avinbc,
Huh ..., it does work well. My AEBS and Airdisk are running without real problems.
As to the OP: I don't know the answer but I'm interested in the answer as well.

  • Western Digital: My Book Studio Edition 2

I've bought WD My Book Studio Edition 2. I need to ask that should I install the WD software(s) off provided CD for backing up my Mac?... OR... Time Machine is all I need for backing up my Mac WITHOUT installing WD software(s)?
    Thanks.

As far as I have tested, I don't think you can use it in "JBOD" mode.
Also I think JBOD isn't the accurate term for the scenario you've described as "1 volume per drive". With "real JBOD", the RAID controller combines the spaces on all "physical drives" and only presents the OS with 1 single drive. You could split that single drive equally into 2 volumes with DiskUtil but that wouldn't guarantee the data being split equally onto the 2 "physical drives".
I found this limitation of being able to use only RAID0&1 little disappointing because that means you could either have a protected volume at the size of only 1TB, or a risky volume at 2TB knowing you could suddenly lose ALL of that data...
We certainly need something in between, I hope there might be a firmware update to make this possible.

  • Western Digital My Book Studio Edition in the Irish/UK store

    hi,
My question actually concerns a product in the apple store but since it is related to firewire devices for Expanding my Intel-based iMac I thought it best to try here.
Has anybody used the Irish or UK online Apple store to buy a Western Digital 1TB — or TB - My Book Studio Edition in the last week or two.
Can you tell me if the item that is pictured on the product page — http://store.apple.com/ie/product/TP441VC/A?mco=MTQzMDYxNDY — is the actual style of the hard drive that you received or if the actual hard drive is the newer version of the My Book Studio with an LCD ' Smart display 'screen on the front — http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=756.
    Cheers.

The latter one with the screen is the higher end Studio Elite.
WD have several models, I believe there Elements at the basic end of the market, MyBook Studio and MyBook Studio Elite.
If you search around the net though, you can get these drives and other similar 1TB a lot cheaper than there charging on the apple store.

  • WD My Book Essential Edition 1TB

I have been transferring home DV tapes to DVD and putting everything on my 320gb external drive which is quickly running out of space. I purchased a WD My Book Essential Edition 1TB USB 2.0 but I'm hesitating opening it - as I didn't really research types of HDs - it just seemed like a good deal (it was on sale and I got an additional 10% off).... should I open it and use it or return it and get something else?
    thanks!

    Hi valleen
I agree with rkaufmann87, if you were just backing up the Internal HD then the USB drive would be just fine. But if your going to move large files off the Internal HD and access then on a regular basis, get yourself a FireWire HD.

  • Linksys e4200 + wd my book studio edition II 6 TB

    Hello for everybody!
I have linksys e4200 and wd my book studio edition II 6 TB (2 hdd drive in raid0) with usb connection. When I connect my hdd drive the router can't find any connection drives.I think this limitation is firmware or kernel os which installed on linksys. How do I make it work or when can we expect support for usb hdd capacity of more than 2 Tb?

You may want to refer to this guide on how to set up your Hard Drive to work with the E4200.

  • WD My Book Studio Edition II 2TB?

This product came with 3 software's.
    - One for backup which I did not install, as I use Time Machine.
    - Second "WD Turbo" drivers this also I did not install as WD website says drivers included in Mac OS X are the same as WD Turbo.
    - Third "Drive Manager" this also I did not install as it is used only for setting up RAID & external label.
Currently when I connect my hdd, Mac detects it as a single 2 TB drive & I get speeds of upto 40 MB/ps using firewire 800.
    1) Will installing any of the above s/w really improve the speed?
    2) If I configure RAID 0 using WD drive manager, will I see increase in transfer speed?
    3) After installing WD drive manager & setting up RAID 0, if I am not happy with the results can I completely un-install WD drive manager & remove the RAID config as well?
I also posted this on WD forum's:-
    http://community.wdc.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/My-Book-Studio-Edition-II-2- TB-software-s/td-p/16456

    Don't buy WD
    - Poor support
    - they claim its made for Mac, but their s/w suck
    - Low cache & rpm
    Buy a Lacie or mercury.

  • WD My Book Studio Edition II - any good for Time Machine?

    Hello all,
A quick question regarding the Western Digital *My Book Studio Edition II*. Is it any good as a Time Machine drive?
Our 1.5TB Maxtor OneTouch™ III Turbo Edition is loud, but runs problem free for Time Machine. So far all our Maxtor drives have been reliable. But the price for the WD is almost a third of the Maxtor, so time for a change...
Amazon users say it has FireWire related issues. Has anyone else had these problems? Would love to know as the price seems very good.

Appreciate any and all help. Thanks in advance.
    Jim.

    This is what I have:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW934AL2/
And in it I put two 640 Caviars. Software from OWC allows me to separate the two drives if that's what I wish. I did at first but then went back to their set up and just partitioned down the middle, one for cloning, one for TM. Works pretty well. The software allows one to create a Mirrored Raid also.
I have another back up clone so I'm not worried about losing a drive in the set up. Besides, in almost 20 years I've never had an HD fail. And in regard to the OPs first choice, the My Book, which personally would you rather see go? The one entire My Book unit, or a single $80 HD in an enclosure?
Drobo... impressive and very expensive, was that the point of mentioning it? We're talking about Time Machine here.

  • WD My Book Studio Edition, bootable?

Can Tiger/Leopard boot off a WD My Book Studio Edition's FW400/800/eSATA? I'm planning to buy one due to it being cheaper than separate storage and enclosure.

Check out the following knowledgebase article at Western Digital's Web site:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=1715&p_created=1199999177&p_sid=9aji6YWi&p_accessibility=0&p_red irect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTgyL DE4MiZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPTAmcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlY XJjaF9mbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1ib290ICJvcyB4Ig**&p_li=&ptopview=1
The electronics of several models (but not all) of the MyBook external drives that support FireWire are seen by the computer as two devices on the FireWire chain. The first device number, called SCSI Logical Unit Number 0, is used by the drive case (probably to provide unique features like the capacity gauge found on these drives). The hard drive inside the case is SCSI LUN 1. Unfortunately, PowerPC based Macs will only search for SCSI LUN 0 devices during the boot sequence (as this has traditionally been the Logical Unit Number of a boot drive). So if you have a PowerPC based Mac and you need the ability to boot from FireWire you would be better off buying a case that has a simple FireWire to ATA bridge (i.e. presents itself as only one device). Note that not all chipsets are the same. The Oxford 911/922 chipsets have always been the best supported on the Macs. If you are looking to buy an external drive/case it is worthwhile finding out what chipset it uses. LaCie external drives have good Mac support, although there are many other cheap cases available (e.g. Sarotech).
Intel based macs will boot fine from a MyBook Studio as long as you partition the drive using the GUID partition scheme. The GUID partition scheme can be selected using the Options button when partitioning the drive using the Disk Utility application. WARNING: Partitioning a drive destroys all data on the drive.
Hope this helps someone looking to purchase a drive for FireWire booting.

  • Digital Camera Connection Problems With Leopard

    Hi Everyone,
I'm having a big problem with connecting various digital cameras to my macs. I have 3 different machines (a G5 iMac, 2 MacBook Pros) all running 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 and none of them will recognize my canon Powershot SD800 or my SD1000. I haven't had a chance to test it out with my Digital Rebel yet but I'm suspecting I may run into the same issue.
I've read through all the tech notes in the iLife section and various articles on the web and from what I can tell Apple has a problem with usb device connections in Leopard. I've tried all of the fixes (deleting caches folder, resetting PRAM, updating all applications, etc) and nothing works. The cameras were working fine under 10.4.11. I was really hoping Apple would have fixed this in 10.5.2 but it is still not working. Does anyone have any ideas if Apple is working on this? For photographers like myself this is a major deal. I can get around the issue right now using an external memory card reader, but that's extremely inconvenient at times and I'm just not impressed that something like this has gone months without a fix from Apple.

And I'm not having any problems with Leopard mounting my Canon PowerShot Pro or Rebel though I typically don't connect them, choosing to use a card reader instead. (Saves camera battery.) This is true on the 4 computers I use at home and work as well as my wife's MacBook. Two came with Leopard pre-installed the other 3 I installed Leopard using Archive & install.
We can talk about how you upgraded to Leopard or what you have installed that might be getting in the way, or you can buy an inexpensive card reader and be done with the hassle.

I'll really appreciate all comments about this!

I have 3 and never had problems... if they have, they can ship the HD back to HQ and WD will replace it with no costs!
the only remain issue is the the free fall sensor that MB sometimes have problems with it, I bought mine 320Gb 7200rpm Scorpio Blue without it, my Mac flies now
