My CD drive doesn't burn anymore

when i attempt to burn a cd i get the following message,
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media"
What should i do about that? im not really sure where to begin, could it be something to do with the drivers? im not at all sure, any help would be amazing, thank you

There have been reports that various things have helped resolve this - though not consistently since there are a number of possible causes of the error.
First, try repairing permissions. If that doesn't work, try resetting the PMU (instructions below) and if that doesn't help try running a CD lens cleaner in the drive.
These are possible solutions that can help deal with a fault that is less significant than a broken drive, but of course if the drive itself is damaged or faulty, a repair would be needed.

  • My external hard drive doesn't show anymore

    Hello Everyone,
I hope you can help me. Today I wanted to put new data on my WD hard drive, I have it for almost a year and always worked fine (it's just USB, no power necessary). But my External HD was almost full so I deleted the "time machine" back-ups. Now, my Macbook Pro or iMac doesn't show my WD in Finder. I can find it in Disk Utility but only for a few seconds. Can someone please help me by giving some tips or own experiences? Thanks!

If you want LR to show the full path of a directory tree as it is on an actual drive, you are going to have to fool it into showing it to you.
    a) Place a COPY of a photo, ANY photo, in the directory/folder that you want to show as the root of your folder tree in LR.
    b) Using "Import Photos from disk" import ONLY the photo that you placed in the 'root' folder, by DOUBLE-CLICKING on it so that only it is imported.
    c) After the import, your folder structure should now look the way that you want it to in LR, matching the actual drive structure from the root upwards.
    d) Using LR, delete the photo that you used as a placeholder. The LR Folder structure should remain intact.

  • External hard drive doesn't work anymore... Why?

Hi, I have been using a WD Elements I tb external hard drive on my MBP and it worked fine for a year and a half. However, my son played with it until I caught him and now, when I plug it in my computer, the MBP doesn't recognize the HD. The HD works fine (lights are on and I hear a spinning sound, and feel it work) but it doesn't appear in my Finder. I can, however, repair it in Disk Utilities and I am deleting its contents right now. Anything else I should do. I really don't want to buy another one.
I am using Mountain Lion (until Mavericks comes ) 10.8.4, 2 GHz Intel Core i&, 4 gig 1333 MHz, DDR3.
    Any help would be welcomed

It sounds like the drive may be failing. Do not attempt to do anything more with it .
If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue II . There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it.

  • Old iphoto library from an old computer's hard drive doesn't open anymore

My old computer broke some time ago, but I got the hard drive saved with its iPhoto library. I used to be able to open the old iPhoto from the old computer's hard drive with my new computer connecting them, but now it says that the old iPhoto cannot be opened because I have to update to a newer version, but the only button I can press is 'quit'. So I don't know how to get a newer version of iPhoto to my old hard drive or how to get the pictures out of the old iPhoto. I have a separate iPhoto in my new computer.
When I press 'show content' of the old iPhoto, there are no pictures anywhere.
Please help, I have my old pictures there!
    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Petra

I used to be able to open the old iPhoto from the old computer's hard drive with my new computer connecting them, but now it says that the old iPhoto cannot be opened because I have to update to a newer version, but the only button I can press is 'quit'.
Petra, do you mean, you opened the old iPhoto application from the old computer on your new computer or did you open the iPhoto Library?
If you have a newer iPhoto version on your new computer, try to open your old iPhoto Library with the newer iPhoto version on your new Mac.
What was the old iPhoto version on the old Mac, and which version do you have now? And which version of MacOS X?
If you now have iPhoto 9.5.1 on your new computer, launch this version while holding down the options key (sometimes called alt key). This will bring up the library chooser panel. Select the old library on your old drive.  iPhoto should offer to upgrade the library., unless your old library has been created by a very old iPhoto version.
If the old library had been created with iPhoto '08 or earlier, you need first to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader to prepare the library.
See this document: iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
After running the upgrader, proceed as described above.

  • DVD doesn't burn anymore

I was burning a data DVD in Toast and I tried to abort the burn because I'd left off some files.
I then tried again and the burn keeps failing. I made a disk image and trying burning that from Disk Utility and it failed as well with this error message
    http://www.fcpbook.com/DVD_error
I was using RiData media, which I'd used before to burn both movies and data.
Anyone have any idea what this might be and if it can be fixed?
    Thanks very much.
    All the best,
    Tom

The reset may have helped. It's writing a single layer disc, but it still seems to barf when trying to write a dual layer disc, which is what I usually burn.

  • HDD PCB doesn't work anymore MK 5059 GSX

    Hi all,
I'm looking for a solution I've an external drive where was a
    MK5059GSX
    500 GB
The drive doesn't work anymore after less than 5 months.
It's seems to be that the PCB out is.
I'm looking for the same parts for this dirve because there is 190 GB important data.
Here are the reference of HDD and PCB
    Thanks for any help

I would consider a drive service company. They have a great success rate at retrieving data, but typically you lose the hard drive since they had to disassemble it and the costs are in the hundreds of dollars.
Other thought is to go online and see if the hard drive is available from E-bay or some other vendor and cannibalize the parts.
Hard drives are pretty specialized and I don't see manufacturers selling the parts. Even the drive service companies need specialized tools and a clean room. Good luck in retrieving your files.

  • Western digital hard drive doesn't show up anymore

I bought a Macbook Pro a few months ago and I've been using my Western Digital external USB hard drive with up until now with no problems. Then today for some reason, I turn my computer on and the drive doesn't show up anymore. It doesn't show up in disk utility either. I've rebooted a few times but no luck. I inserted a flash drive and it mounts ok so it's not the USB port. I even switched usb cables just in case the cable was bad. Any suggestions?

    Hi there
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your Mac.
Is the ext HD a powered drive (needs AC power to run) or portable? (smaller, doesn't need to be plugged in to AC)
If its AC powered, check that all the usual lights are lit up on it (flashing activity light, power light etc), if not, then you would need to contact WD.
You can also try resetting the SMC & PRAM, as I have seen this cause a HD to not mount before.
    Cheers

My Ipod touch 2nd generation was working fine until I tried to charge again from my PC,when I connected the Ipod was getting too hot and smelling like burn cable, the screen turn black and doesn't work anymore. any ideas about what happen?

    You can try here:

However, from your discription, I suspect that something is broken.  Maybe a dead battery.  In that case. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and see what they say.

  • Flash drive formatted, but doesn't work anymore!

    hi
I just formatted my flash in Mac-OS leopard (using utilities). But it's not detected anymore by the same mac. When i tried to use it windows, an icon appears in 'my computer', but its not accessible. It says 'Please insert a disc in the empty drive'! I used 'write zero in all....' option in Utilities/erase. Some please help me out.

Hi Ajay, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Insert the drive in your MBP and open Disk Utility. Does it show up there? If so, try formatting it again, this time without zeroing. Sounds like you want to use it on a PC too, so choose DOS.
If the drive doesn't show up in DU, try restarting the MBP. If still no luck, try PRAM Reset.

  • Time Machine Just Doesn't Work Anymore

I was a happy Time Machine (with Time Capsule) user for months. But it just doesn't work anymore. It takes longer than an hour to do every hourly backup so it is backing up 24 hours a day. It finds hundreds of thousands of files changed every hour and tries to back them up. Finders says only tens of files have been modified all of today. I have tried rebuilding my spotlight indexes, repairing my Time Capsule with Disk Utility and starting over with a brand new backup. But it just backs up hundreds of thousands of files every hour. So I am turning off Time capsule since it is clearly broken. If anyone has any suggestions at all I would welcome them.

    Marcia,
Consider the following, it might give you some ideas:
Time Machine performs backups at the file level. If a single bit in a large file is changed, the WHOLE file is backed up again. This is a problem for programs that save data to monolithic virtual disk files that are modified frequently. These include Parallels, VMware Fusion, Aperture vaults, or the databases that Entourage and Thunderbird create. These should be excluded from backup using the Time Machine Preference Exclusion list. You will, however, need to backup these files manually to another external disk.
One poster observed regarding Photoshop: “If you find yourself working with large files, you may discover that TM is suddenly backing up your scratch disk's temp files. This is useless, find out how to exclude these (I'm not actually sure here). Alternatively, turn off TM whilst you work in Photoshop.” (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1209412)
If you do a lot of movie editing, unless these files are excluded, expect Time Machine to treat revised versions of a single movie as entirely new files.
If you frequently download software or video files that you only expect to keep for a short time, consider excluding the folder these are stored in from Time Machine backups.
If you have recently created a new disk image or burned a DVD, Time Machine will target these files for backup unless they are deleted or excluded from backup.
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can created major changes in the structure of your directories. Time Machine will backup every file that has changed since the installation.
Files or folders that are simply moved or renamed are counted as NEW files or folders. If you rename any file or folder, Time Machine will back up the ENTIRE file or folder again no matter how big or small it is.
George Schreyer describes this behavior: “If you should want to do some massive rearrangement of your disk, Time Machine will interpret the rearranged files as new files and back them up again in their new locations. Just renaming a folder will cause this to happen. This is OK if you've got lots of room on your backup disk. Eventually, Time Machine will thin those backups and the space consumed will be recovered. However, if you really want recover the space in the backup volume immediately, you can. To do this, bring a Finder window to the front and then click the Time Machine icon on the dock. This will activate the Time Machine user interface. Navigate back in time to where the old stuff exists and select it. Then pull down the "action" menu (the gear thing) and select "delete all backups" and the older stuff vanishes.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
    *TechTool Pro Directory Protection*
This disk utility feature creates backup copies of your system directories. Obviously these directories are changing all the time. So, depending on how it is configured, these backup files will be changing as well which is interpreted by Time Machine as new data to backup. Excluding the folder these backups are stored in will eliminate this effect.
    *Backups WAY Too Large*
If an initial full backup or subsequent incremental backup is tens or hundreds of Gigs larger than expected, check to see that all unwanted external hard disks are still excluded from Time Machine backups.
This includes the Time Machine backup drive ITSELF. Normally, Time Machine is set to exclude itself by default. But on rare occasions it can forget. When your backup begins, Time Machine mounts the backup on your desktop. (For Time Capsule users it appears as a white drive icon labeled something like “Backup of (your computer)”.) If, while it is mounted, it does not show up in the Time Machine Prefs “Do not back up” list, then Time Machine will attempt to back ITSELF up. If it is not listed while the drive is mounted, then you need to add it to the list.
*FileVault / Boot Camp / iDisk Syncing*
Note: Leopard has changed the way it deals with FileVault disk images, so it is not necessary to exclude your Home folder if you have FileVault activated. Additionally, Time Machine ignores Boot Camp partitions as the manner in which they are formatted is incompatible. Finally, if you have your iDisk Synced to your desktop, it is not necessary to exclude the disk image file it creates as that has been changed to a sparsebundle as well in Leopard.
Let us know if any of this helps.
    Cheers!

  • DVD Drive woes! Burns but can't read!

GRRRR! This just started. I can burn blank DVDs in my drive (NEC ND-3550A - 1 yr. old), but when I put the burned DVD right back in, it's not recognized!!!!
I have made sure the finder preference and system preferences are right. The DVD drive shows up under the profiler. Permissions have been repaired. Using same media I have been using all along (without any problems).
I have tried other DVD videos & Data DVDs that I have burned on this machine (which used to work) - but now they don't.
Commercial DVD's & burned CDs WORK fine!
But the DVD Laser Lens Cleaner DVD- (that used to work) DOESN'T WORK anymore either.
Every DVD that I put in the drive, pops up a message that the DVD is blank. The DVD player app. does NOT open.
The DVD's that I tried work fine on my Powerbook.
    Ideas? Suggestions?

    Hi-
I assume that you have restarted the machine since this problem started?
Might be time to reinstall your OS? That is, assuming it reads the install DVD/CD......
Archive and Install may be enough to patch things up- or, try updating to 10.3.9 (your profile says 10.3.8)

  • If i selected to "Create a new backup" and then cancelled that option but want to go back and select "Inherit backup history"; how do i go back and do that since now when i plug in my HD, that option doesn't appear anymore?? Any Help?

If i selected to "Create a new backup" and then canceled that option but want to go back and select "Inherit backup history"; how do I go back and do that since now when I plug in my external hard drive, that option doesn't appear anymore?? Any Help? I bought a MacBook Air, but decided to return it for the newest model, and I wanted to back it up so that I can then back it up on my new MacBook Air. I didn't understand the option to Inherit or start a new back up, and therefore selected the option to create a new backup. I believe I should have selected to Inherit backup history so that when i back it up on the new MackBook Air, it appears the same as the one I'm returning.... Is there anyway that i can re-select the option to Inherit backup history for time machine?

    Thanks for sharing this link.

  • Efi Express doesn't work anymore so I can't print

I Use Efi Express as RIP and colormanagement software to print to my Epson Pro 4900 printer. Now I need prints and this doesn't work anymore.
I installed Maverick so that is most likely to be the problem, because just before I did this the pritner and software worked fine. I installed Efi Express again but I keep getting a message aboutr a system extension that isn't properly installed.
I looked in the system folder for this .kext file, but it doesn't exist at all.
    Please help.

We use the Fiery Express driver with our Canon copiers that use the optional EFI print controller and have no issue with this driver on 10.9. In fact, at this point in time, it is the only EFI driver we have for 10.9.
The Express driver plugins should be located in /Library/Printers/efi and the PPD will be in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj and is called Fiery Express. So trash these files and check the EFI web site for the latest version of the driver.

  • IMac freezes & Time Machine doesn't work anymore

    Hello,
For several days now my trusty iMac (two years old) keeps freezing without a recognizable pattern. Programs like iTunes, iPhoto or maybe even the Finder just stop working and display only the rotating ball - the only thing left to do for me after that is to manually terminate that process or (in the case of the Finder) to restart the whole iMac. I'm really clueless as to where this behaviour suddenly comes from, up until about a week ago the iMac worked perfectly. And now something like this happens every single time I start it.
Another thing that doesn't work anymore is Time Machine. My last automatic backup is from September 17th. After that it just stopped working. Every time an automatic or manual backup is initiated it just says "Searching for backup volume" but doesn't find it, even after several hours of looking. The Time Capsule itself works perfectly, no errors whatsoever.
My iMac is up-to-date, I also already ran the disgnostics of the hard drive program - everything seems to be fine. Can anyone help me?
    Thank you in advance,
    Paul

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
