My cd/dvd drive does not accept any cds/dvds

I know this has been posted before, but I have tried many methods posted on this site and others, and either I have done them wrong or they haven't worked.
I have a three year old macbook pro running 10.6.8. I also have Windows 7 Ultimate running on Bootcamp, and my disc drive does not work on that OS either.
The weird thing is that two weeks ago, I installed a videogame using a DVD-R and it was working perfectly. I ejected it when I was done. I am 100% certain there is no disc stuck in the drive, and I have looked in Disc Utility to be sure of that.
I tried resetting the SMC by restarting the computer holding down SHIFT+CONTROL+OPTION and the startup button, and that didn't work. I tried restarting holding down the trackpad button, which would eject any stuck disc, among some other methods.
Maybe someone can point me in the direction of re-installing drivers for the disc drive or something? I really hope this is a software issue because I am in another country for the next year and going to an apple store would be out of my budget and very difficult. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
My last resort (I would rather get my computer fixed) is using a Macbook Air superdrive, however it is incompatible with my macbook pro (for some reason they only made it compatible with the Air, which I don't have). I heard there is a risky way of editing some "code" to get it to run with a macbook. But I must stress again, I would much rather fix the problem at hand than jerry-rig an external drive as a solution.
Thanks so much for your help.
-David
edit: as was mentioned in other posts, when I put a disc in the drive, it feels like something in the upper right hand corner is blocking the entry. The computer is completely unresponsive to the disc. Thanks for reading!

Appears your optical drive is "broke" = hardware issue.

  • Satellite A200-AH5 CD/DVD drive does not burn any CDs

I own a Toshiba Satellite laptop (A200 -AH3) running Windows Vista Home Premium.
For what it is worth, the processor is a T2085 @ 1.73 GHz. It is a 32-bit Operating System.
In Device Manager when I click on DVD/CD Rom drives, I get TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device.
Clicking on this I find that the driver is working properly and up to date. I have not been able to burn a CD on this system...
I have not tried to burn a DVD.
I have run through all the steps for burning a CD, however, but even though it goes through the process of showing the progress as each song from a playlist is burned to disc, when the disc is supposedly finalized...there is nothing on the disc when I try to play it back and with the exception of iTunes or another program opening when I place the CD into the drive to be played, absolutely nothing happens.
I tried burning music on a disc on my sister's desktop computer and it burned fine.
So...It is not a problem with the discs.
When I took the disc my sister had burned and placed it in the disc drive on my laptop, it displayed the tracks that had been burned and it played the music just fine. This has me really thrown for a loop.
The laptop is only a year old and I can't burn a single thing.
Unfortunately, the warranty has expired. I am desperate to get this problem fixed. I have no idea if it will burn a DVD, but I have ruined 2 boxes of CD-R discs already. After the disc has supposedly burned the music...even though no music has been burned...the disc is ruined and has to be tossed.
I am not terribly knowledgeable about techncal aspects of computers, so I hope you can speak to me in general terminology if you respond to my problem. I really hope someone out there can advise me as to what is going on or what I should do to resolve the problem.
Thanks for any help in advance!
    Thanks.

    Hi
In your case I would recommend trying different CDs from different manufacturers.
You should know that not all CDs or DVDs would be fully compatible with your internal CD/DVD drive.
In many cases not compatible CD or DVD would cause exactly the same issues which you have described in your message so try different medias!
Furthermore I would recommend checking the Toshiba driver page for an CD/DVD drives firmware update.
As Im not mistaken the Satellite A200-AH3 belongs to the Canadian series and you should check the Canadian page for some new firmware. Maybe a new firmware is available
Last but not least you could switch to other burning software Im using the Nero In my opinion its the best applications for such purposes

  • My disk drive does not play any original dvd or cd anymore, but the copies work fine, no matter which format. Do I need a new disk drive?

    Hello All,
since last week my disk drive does not play any original DVD or CD anymore, but copied ones, no matter which format work fine. I am a bit confused that the copied ones still work.
Anybody experienced the same? Will I have to get a new disk drive? Unfortunately the warranty expired last month
Looking forward to your answers and thanks,
    Yvonne

  • Tecra M5: DVD drive does not read these mini DVDs

I have canon dvd handycam, and mini dvd works on it. One month back i recorded movie and pictures on mini dvd using handycam and ran mini dvd on my tecra M5 dvd drive, it worked very fine.
Now after 1 month i have 5 mini dvds with movies and pictures which i took on 1 month vacation in diffierent countries, i tried my best but tecra dvd drive does not read these mini dvd, cd drive label appears instead dvd drive when i put mini dvd in it.
All other standard size dvds, cds working fine on it.Its complicated and as well as irritating.
    Any suggestions?
    Why its messedup?

Seems the lens cannot read this miniDVDs. Possibly the drive lens cannot calibrate and therefore the miniDVDs are nonreadable.
Try the solution from sascha. Maybe youre a lucky man and it works.
If not, try to remove the drive physically from the notebook. Reboot the notebook without the drive. The Windows and BIOS shouldnt recognize the drive.
Then shuts down again, put the drive into the notebook and boot up the unit.
The notebook should recognize the drive and should indicate the firmware again.
Im not sure if this will help you but its attemptable

  • Re: CD/DVD drive does not seem to start DVDs in Satellite P750

My CD/DVD drive does not seem to start DVDs, it would turn and turn and the only way I can start a DVD (i.e. a movie) is by using Windows Media Centre, while software to be installed needs to be activated from Windows Explorer.
    Anybody?
    Please help.
    Thanks!

Thanks, Xaver, tried this, still won't autoplay, it will just turn the dvd around for a while and then stop. Though when I open Windows Medi Centre and choos 'play DVD', it does the trick. The only way to install software, though si through Windows Exp[lorer and searching relevant file. Cheers,
    Havoc.

  • My cd/dvd drive does not recognize/load cds

iMac 10.6.8 snow leopard with iTunes 11.0, purchased in 2008.
The cd will be accepted into the drive which will begin to turn/mount the disk followed by a few clicks after which the drive stops, tries again, tries a 3rd time and then ejects the cd.  Dvds do load but I have been experiencing "skipping over damaged area" msgs when there is no damage.  Resetting the SMC alleviates that problem for dvds but not the cd loading problem. Cds that have been accepted in the past do no load, even brand new cds.
I do play dvds and cds frequently but before I conclude that my drive is failing due to wear and tear, I wanted to know if there's a way to clean the drive, if that's the problem.  The drive does not accept a dvd/cd drive cleaning disk.
Any suggestions for further at-home diagnosis/refurbishing before I contact my local authorized repair person or buy a Superdrive to substitute for the malfunctioning drive?

None of the information you have provided answered my question regarding a way to clean/refurbish a drive which will not accept a dvd/cd cleaning disk.
You finally advised me to do what I had already done prior to posting.
Perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem.  Although the internal drives are generically referred to as superdrives, I only employed that term in my initial post when referring to purchasing an external drive to potentially be shared with a laptop.  So, the confusion is yours.
The link below gives simple yet comprehensive coverage of when, why and how to reset SCM/PRAM, which does not include my CD mounting issue, although it resolved the "skipping over damaged areas" problem I had prior to my original post regarding alternative ways to clean the internal drive.

The link below contains a discussion of failing dvd/cd drives for iMacs of the same vintage as mine with the similar mounting issues.  I had no success mounting a CD via a virtual XP environment, so it's more likely a hardware issue.

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:

Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

  • Combo drive does not accept any disc anymore

    Hello,
I tried to read a normal DVD with my ComboDrive on my 12" G4. The G4 keeps the disc for about 3 - 4 seconds, then it ecjects all discs again. It is not able to mount them, but it also does not seem that the drive does very much. Any idea what the problem could be? The drive worked just fine a couple of days ago.
    Regards

Is it related to a few specific CD's? Some CDs are burned incorrectly or in a way the Mac PB cannot read. They may spin really fast in the drive and make all sorts of strange noises before they eject.
Sometimes taking the same disc and just pushing a bit harder when inserting it will make it work. Sometimes not.
Probably not much you can do but a Genious appointment is always a good place to start, just to be sure.

  • DVD Drive does not accept anything.

    I have a Powerbook G4 1GHz, 15", 1GB, 60GB, UJ-815 Drive.
Every time I put in a cd or a dvd of any kind it starts to make some noise and then spits it out. No idea what is wrong, I installed fine but then Updated to 10.3.9 and that was it... Please help.

My Titanium G4 has just started doing the same thing. Inserting any disc spins up the drive in fits and starts but eventually all discs are ejected. Load the same discs in an external LaCie firewire DVD drive and they show up and behave as normal.
I suspected the 10.4.11 update and went back down to 10.4.10 but no change.
And if I boot it up in OS 9 it does the same thing.
The upshot is I don't know if it is faulty, dirty or what. I very rarely use it anyway. I have always, where possible, used an external drive just so the internal one lasts as long as possible.

  • Driver does not accept DVD

    Hello,
    I have a MacBook Pro 10.8.5.
The driver does not accept any CD/DVD.
The Apple Diagnostics did not detect any hardware issue.
Any suggestions how to solve this instead of buying a new disk for $250!?!?!
The computer is less than 2 years old, so it is early for replacing parts.
    Thanks

  • Satellite L50D-B - faulty DVD drive does not recognize disks

Bought 2 months ago. The drive does not accept CD's, DVD's or anything.
The name of the disk doesn't show up on the drive and if you double click on the DVD drive icon (while a disk is inserted) the tray opens up and says please insert a disk. I've tried many disks so they are not the issue.
So far I've taken it to tech support where I purchased it.
They said to do a reinstall so I did - with the full clean drive. I've tried updating the drivers but the computer insists that they are the latest. If I search for my model number on the Toshiba driver support site it gets rejected and I have no access to drivers (from Toshiba).
I checked out a few other forums and tried the regedit fix but that also did nothing. If no solution is found (and I've already wasted hours of my life on it) then this notebook is going to back for a refund and I'll get one that is going to perform the simple task of playing a DVD.

    Hi
Sorry to hear that you have such stupid problem with your machine. On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there.
In my opinion you should not waste your time checking and searching for some drivers that probably will not help at all.
Reinstall original operating system that you have got with your machine and test functionality with factory settings. If the result is the same contact your local dealer or Toshiba service provider directly and ask for help. They can check ODD and exchange it if necessary.

I have a mac book pro and it does not support any cd/dvd. Some time it runs dvd but only voice not video, dont know what to do or how to resolve this issue. I am out of warranty.

You really shouldn't have to use any special driver to use an external drive - that Western Digital makes it (it seems) a necessity just makes me hate WD drives even more. Over the decades, I've had nothing but problems with WD drives and I no longer purchase them.
If I were you, I would simply ditch the WD drive (if it won't mount without using a special driver) and purchase another brand. I can recommend LaCie (using Seagate drive), and G-TECH and HGST (Hitachi) drives.

  • CD/ DVD Drive is not reading any discs! - HP Pavillion DV6747TX

Hi there, I have a problem. My CD/ DVD Drive is not reading any discs! I have no idea what's happened..it was going fine and then all of the sudden it stopped working.
The computer I have is a HP Pavillion DV6700 or DV6747TX to be exact and the CD/DVD-Rom drive is a TSSTcgrp CDDVDW TS%L632N ATA Device. It seems to be present in the Device Manager and in the Computer Menu. When I put a CD or DVD into the disc drive lights are blinking and it sounds like it's trying to load or do something, but nothing is coming up. CD Drive E still says CD Drive E instead of reading the disc that's in there and when I click on Drive E it says Windows cannot read the disc in drive E.
I have tried searching the net for answers including the suggestions on this website and have tried a few other ideas I have come across but nothing seems to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is usually  a known software conflict and happens across the board will all computer manufacturers due to a issue with multiple media burning/ripping applications being installed on your system.
You can either run this file, go online to Microsoft's site for a fix, or manually fix it by following the instructions below:
    Manually delete the registry entries
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Note Before you use this method, uninstall all CD or DVD writing or recording programs. Deleting the corrupted registry entries might cause problems with any other CD or DVD writing or recording programs that are installed on your computer. Uninstalling these programs before you start will help you avoid any problems that removing the registry entries might cause. You can reinstall these programs after the problem is resolved.
This method provides step-by-step instructions for how to use Registry Editor to delete the following corrupted Registry entries:
    UpperFilters
    LowerFilters
Step 1: Start Registry EditorStart Registry Editor
Start Registry Editor...type "regedit" into the run box on the start menu.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control, and then expand Class.
    Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value?
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.
Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.
If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Step 4: Restart your computer
Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.
