My CD/DVD drive reads regular CDs/DVDs but installation DVDs such as iWork's and office for Mac it spits it out after trying to read it. Please help!!!

For some reason when I insert installation discs for programs like iWork's and office for Mac the drive does not read the disc. I tried movies and music and they worked perfectly. I was able to fix the problem with the iWork's disc by creating a disc image in another drive, I have yet to do this with the Office for Mac but I would like to know what could be the reason for this problem. Any help is appreciated.

@ RabidPineappler and Froggiefo20...
I forgot that I have an extended AppleCare Protection Plan, I contacted Apple today (in Sydney) and they took me through step by step. I tried inserting my OS X disc and it accepted it, I tried putting in a commercial DVD (Star Wars) and it started playing. I then tried putting in a commercial CD and it wouldn't work through iTunes. It made incredibly sick whirring noises and then eventually (approx 5 minutes later) appearred on my desktop, but iTunes7 would not recognise the disc.
Then he suggested I log in under another username which I did... Then my drive prompty died. It does not accept any disc now. He said that I need to have my iBook seen to by a technician. Since I have the extended warranty, my repair shouldn't cost me anything (the extended warranty was ovver $400, so it better not cost anything), so I can't give you an indication as to what you will be up for.
You do not need o take your iBook to the place where you bought it, but ensure you have your sales receipt.
Hope I helped.

Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.

Have you tried one of those CD cleaning Discs yet?
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Booting From External DVD Drive Thru USB to install OS Tiger DVD

    Hi,
I would like to reformat my iBook G4 from Panther to Tiger. I dont have DVD drive internally. I've got the DVD ROM of Tiger and external USB DVD Drive. Tell me the possible ways to do the installation beside Firewire connection.
    Please help me.

    Hi Nik,
AFAIK you cannot boot from USB devices. You could give it try by inserting the Tiger DVD into the external drive and rebooting your Mac while holding the "alt" key. If your DVD drive was bootable then -after a while- the DVD should come up as an option to boot from. But this is not likely to happen.
The best way to get Tiger on your iBook - unless you have anothet Mac with a DVD drive lying around - is to get the Media Exchange form from this website and to exchange your DVD for a set of CDs (minus a handling fee).

  • Spits out Office for Mac 08 but accepts other DVDs

I just got an iMac(it's from 2011 if that matters) and I want to install Office for Mac 2008 on it but everytime I insert the disc, it just spits it out again. The disc is not damaged and my iMac accepts other DVDs and CDs.... It has 10.8.5 as the operating system
Please help, I use Office quite a lot!

Spits out Office for Mac 08 but accepts other DVDs
This is a sign of your Mac expressing its taste.
Take the hint. There are a number of alternatives to Office today, most are better, some are free, none have Microsoft's insatiable tendency towards inefficiency and bloat:
    OpenOffice (free)
    LibreOffice
    NeoOffice
    Pages
    Numbers
    Keynote
All read and write their Office equivalent formats.

  • DL DVD works on standalone DVD players, but Mac computers spit it out

Using Verbatim DVD+R DL media, I have successfully burned my DVD via DVDSP 4.2.1
It plays on almost every standalone DVD player,
It mounts and plays fine on my MacBookPro computer that I used to burn the DVD with,
But it WILL NOT mount on any other mac computers with DVD drives. It will mount on a Windows Computer, but all of the folders for my DVD-rom content have weird symbols for the names... and the DVD will not play with DVD software.
It seems that the computers really seem to struggle reading Data off the burned disc. On previous attempts I have had the computer recognize the disk and mount it after about 1minute of trying to read it. It then opens in the DVD player software, but the menu playback is VERY Jerky. Starts playing the intro menu, but seems like the computer is having a hard time reading the data on the drive.
    Any ideas?
FYI... I do have a autorun.inf file at the root of my DVD-rom content. This initiates autoplay via the VLCportable application.
Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    In addition...
I have also tried doing a build/format to .img file. This works successfully, and I can open the .img file and it plays PERFECTLY on my mac DVD player. However after burning the .img file (and successful verification) in Disk Utility, the disc is not even recognized by the computer that just burned the disc. It just spits the disk back out. It will not work on my other computers as well.
I have also tried burning this Disk with multiple computers to no avail.

    OK. so an update...
I took a little break and then tried the DVD (the one I burned via. the .img file) in my Macbookpro again, and this time it worked. It now works on both of my macbook pro computers and windows machines, but my older powerbook G4 with a dvd drive still spits it out. Seems like there is an intermittent problem with the DVD not being recognized on my MacbookPro computers (it spits them out after a minute or so).
Also... It appears that there is an intermittent problem that the DVD playback (video menu and videos) are very choppy (seems like it is not able to read data from the DVD fast enough). I seemed to resolve the choppyness by clicking the "stop" button and then clicking "play" again. Then it worked perfectly fine.
I will be sending this DVD in for Replication on DVD-9's. Should I be concerned about this intermittent stutter issue? or the issue that it keeps getting spit out by a Powerbook G4?
(when the disc plays... it seems to run perfectly fine like there are no errors with the disc) Do you think Replicating the master would resolve these problems that appear to be media recognization related?
    Any Thoughts?
    Thanks again.

You could purchase any commonly available external USB DVD/CD writer, such as the excellent LG brand units sold on Amazon, for about $30 US.  I've used an LG writer for years to save wear and tear on my older Superdrive.

  • How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?

How can I "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight (and preferably visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App)?
    Background:
I am using Mountain Lion and Mail App and running out of space on my small primary SSD drive (where I keep OS, apps, key user preferences/data and mail for speed). The mail data is the big variable (many GBs) and I want to "archive"/move some of the old mail to my 2nd drive inside the Mac. But I still want it searchable inside spotlight and preferably even inside Mail too. And I'd like to be able to still drag and drop old mails into this archive folder.
What I've tried that seems to work:
    This seemed to work:
    1. Move the archive folder/mailbox to the 2nd drive/partition/folder (don't delete anything inside Mail App)
    2. Create a symbolic link from its new location to the original/old location
This seems to work, it looks as "normal" and as if nothing happened inside Mail App but the folder now resides elsewhere and seems searchable etc. But I'm not sure that once caches refresh or over time with updates etc if stuff will break horribly or corrupt.
Is that the right way to "archive" mails in Mail App to another internal drive/partition to save space but still have it searchable in spotlight and visible, searchable, draggable in Mail App?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Daniel

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • Fusion drive solution to activate Office for Mac 2011

Activating Office 2011  is a known issue for Fusion Drive Macs.
Activation is tied to the drive. According to Microsoft the solid state part of the Fusion Drive generates a new disk id every time the Mac is started. So Mac Office thinks it a new system at each startup and will require activation.
This solution was suggested by Microsoft Support. Please let us know if this works for you.
Follow the steps below to remove the “Thunderbolt bridge”:
    1. Click on the Apple icon and click on “System Preferences”
    2. Click on “Network”
    3. Look for “Thunderbolt Bridge” on the left side.
    4. Highlight the Bridge and click on the “-” sign to remove it.
    5. Restart the computer and enter the Product key for Microsoft Office. Restart again.

I don't normally advocate users re-install Office to fix an issue but in your case I think it's worth a try. The Mavericks update seems to have fixed the issue for most users. I would suggest the complete removal rather than the simple removal of dragging the Office folder in Applications to the trash.

  • Installed MS Office for Mac, after uninstalling test drive, still reg to TD

I installed MS Office for Mac 2004 this morning, after being very careful to uninstall the test drive version, after reading about problems it causes not to do so. I followed the instructions to uninstall, emptied the trash after, did the installation, updates, etc. But when I look at the "about" section of word, etc, it shows that the product is licensed to "Office 2004 Test Drive User". I did fill in the info on name, address, etc, and the "test version" watermarks that I was seeing on excel spreadsheets pre-installation are gone now. I have rebooted the machine. Do I need to register each application separately? Did I miss something in the uninstall?
Also, after installing the new Office, I had problems accessing the internet from accounts other than the one from which I'd done the installation. I asked about that in the internet related subforum here, thought I had it fixed, but it's been inconsistent, seems to work on-and-off in the different accounts. Did the accessing of the net during the course of the install knock something out of place?

I installed office after deleting test drive. Registration is fine. Microsoft creates a user pref folder for each user account. This will be activated with your individual pref. the first time you open one of the office programs. It will be different/reset for each user on the computer. So it is possible that different users would experience different problems connecting to the internet. I copied my users pref and library folder over from my powerbook to the imac and all of my settings seem to work just fine on the new imac.
My suggestion would be to uninstall all versions of office on your imac and then reinstall office 2004. Be sure to do this in an administrator account and to repair permissions before and after install.
    Good luck!

  • I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB drive, first time I have selected Mac Windows option which excludes Time Machine to work on it, but now I want to go back and select Only Mac option to activate my Time Machine application. I request you to help me

I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB drive, first time during plug-in, I have selected Mac Windows option which excludes Time Machine to work on it, but now I want to go back and select Only Mac option to activate my Time Machine application.
I request you to help me with the procedure of the same?

IMPORTANT - This will reformat your Seagate drive and hence wipe it.  If there is anything on your Seagate drive you want to keep, save it somewhere else FIRST.
    Plug the drive in.
In Finder select Applications > Utilities > Disc Utilities.
Select the external drive, select Partition option, give it a name (I call mine Mac Backup), select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format and under the drop down menu "Partition Layout" select the number of partitions you want (so if you want the drive to just be for Time Machine, select 1 Partition, if you want part of the drive to be for Time Machine and the rest for something else, select 2 partitions and so on).  Click apply and the Disc Utility will partition and reformat your drive ready to use.
When this is complete, open Time Machine in System Preferences. Use  Select Disc to select the drive (or if you have multiple partitions, the partition of the drive) you want and you are good to go.
This may be a long way round, but it gives you the option to partition your disc which you may want.

Tried all of Apple's suggestions - and the one Mac is still not updating/syncing Bookmarks or Reading List. What's going on? Do I have to wait to OS update? It seems lots of peolple were having issues before ML, but I as fine. Since ML, I am having all kinds of issues!

Yeah, I literally have tried everything except deleting my iCloud account (I'm close, but that would require so many changes that it is way too painful to consider at this point).
I am still waiting to hear back from Apple Support. Hopefully something can be done, or they can do a reset on their end.
Thanks for taking the time to respond though, much appreciated!
