My computer locked up.  No cursor.  Working on a paper I don't want to lose.   Any suggestions?

Dug,
I would try force quitting all other apps, if you can. Sometimes when one app becomes unresponsive, you can still operate in others and regain control by quitting the offending one. Once you regain control, however you can, if Pages can't be resumed, go to a backup copy of your document and start from there. Not having a backup or a recent save after a crash is like asking after a car wreck if you can go back and fasten the seat belt.
Sorry to hear about your problem.
Jerry
