My DVD player won't read my DVDS

This is the first time I try to play a dvd since I have bought my lap top, which was about 7 months ago and my dvd player will not read them. On quick time it says that its missing a codec. Is there any reason as to why that is happening?

There's an easy way to fix this - guaranteed.
Download VLC Player for free:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
More compatible with more media types than anything else.
Or, you can try to figure out which codec you don't have, which might take some searching.

  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

  • TouchSmart 300 Dvd Player won't read or burn DVD

My dvd player is not working correctly.  I am able read and burn CDs, but the player won't read or write DVDs.  I have a touchsmart 300 running Windows 7.  I was trying to burn some home movies in WMA format.  Movie Maker recognizes a blank DVD, and attempts to burn the DVD, but once it finishes, the disk is blank.  I then tried to just burn a MPG file using another software program and it failed at the validation stage.  Finally, I put a dvd movie in the drive and it wont recognize the disk.  These functions used to work fine.  The computer is only 15 months old, of course I only had a one year warranty.
Is there anyway this could be related to software or is it a hardware problem?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
If it still isn't working, try the following.
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • DVD Player Won't Read Disks

I'm using OS 10.4.3 and DVD Player 4.6. My dvd drive will not read pre-recorded disk or blamk disc.
    Could it be software related?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi
It would be helpful if you included the optical drive model info (from Apple System Profiler), and complete your Mac profile; there are 6 different G4 models. Include what type of blank media, and whether the drive holds but does not mount the media, or if it ejects it.
applehistory.com can be helpful if you are unsure which flavour G4 you own.

  • DVD Player won't read DVD then crashes when trying to load VIDEO_TS folder

I use DVD player for movies maybe once a week.
I insert a DVD. It shows up on the dekstop as it should.
Once in a while, if it's a video DVD, DVD player opens and it says, "this type of media is not supported" (or whatever the message is).
I can open the DVD in the Finder and see the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and anything else that may be on it.
If I go to DVD PLayer and select File -> Open DVD Media, it crashes.
I have to reboot to watch a DVD.
I haven't been able to get it to do it when I want since it only happens after a week or so.

  • Dvd drive won't read/ejects dvds at a whim

    Hi all,
My macbook dvd drive seems to not wish to play certain dvds- only a few though... when this occurs, it just tends to spit them back out at me.
It's not a problem with the dvds, as they play on my dvd player, just not on the laptop...
    any ideas?

    Hi Peeps
I had exactly the same problem with my Macbook, again from the UK. Really weird though as would intermittantly read DVD film's which worked fine previously.
Well.... Took it to my local Apple store and saw a genius and anyway they replaced the super drive and logic board (surprised about the logic board!).
But just got it back today and the DVD drive is completely fubard so is being returned tomorrow to get this sorted!
Moral of the story, sounds like a drive or board problem. Will keep you updated when I get mine back

  • Satellite M40-145: CD/DVD drive won't read some DVDs

    Hello!
I own a Satellite M40-145 purchased just over one year ago; the DVD driver worked perfectly until three days ago, but today I discovered something... peculiar. It still reads commercial DVDs and burned DVD+R, but apparently it doesn't read burned DVD-Rs anymore. I have tried with different DVD-Rs I burned through the same DVD player, with no success; trying to access the DVD yields a "insert disk in D: drive" message.
In this case, I'm talking about movies on DVDs. Please tell me there's a way to solve this without sending the computer to customer service...
I'd hate to think it broke down just days after the expiration date of the warranty.

    Hi
Well, you can try to remove the drive form the device manger.
After new reboot the drive should be recognized again. Check then if its possible to read the DVD-R CD.
But the issue sounds as a lens calibration error. If you use different media the lens must be calibrated again. But if this procedure fails, the drive is not able to read or write the DVD for example.
Unfortunately, in such cases only the drive replacement will solve this issue.

  • Dvd player does not read burnt dvds

i burnt 2 dvds on my macbook pro (leopard). they both play fine on my macbook pro and my toshiba dvd player.
they will not play on my macbook and powermac g4 (tiger).
is this a problem with the dvd player in tiger? if so, any way to update it or download a newer version?

oh sorry i forgot to add that i managed to play some of the contents directly from my storage disk:
    1. open dvd player
    2. select play media
    3. instead of clicking on the FOLDER, like i wld do if i access the video from my macbook pro (leopard), i have to open the folder and click on VIDEO TS inside the folder
it will play this way. but i wonder if some features are lost? and why can't i play directly fr the burnt dvd like i can do on my macbook pro and toshiba dvd player?
sorry this is longwinded... i am rather frustrated here... thx for the help!

  • Dvd player won't launch when dvd inserted

DVD player has become erratic about launching when I insert a commercial video disc. Sometimes it launches, and sometimes the disc is simply ejected after about a minute, without DVD Player having launched. There's no error message, the disc is simply ejected. When this has happened, I've tried things like repairing permissions, logging out and logging back in, and restarting. These work sometimes, and sometimes not.
Actually, I'm not sure if the problem is with DVD Player, since the disc is not showing up in Finder, either.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

and....when i put in a movie dvd it works but not a dvd with files. Help?

  • HD DVD player won't play HD DVDs (DV6700t)

Hello all, I need the updated firmware or something for this hd dvd player. It will read normal DVDs, but will not play or recognize HD DVDs.

And yes, this is an actual HD DVD Toshiba drive, so it should be playing them.

  • DVD burner won't read burned DVD's

We have a dual 2Ghz G5 with 2.5Gb's of ram that used to be able to read DVD's that had been burned. Now it will read only commercial DVD's and CD's (it can burn CD's fine). It won't accept non-burned DVD-R's either.

    Hi.
I have almost the same problem:
I bought an PM G5 2x2Ghz with 1Ghz of RAM in november 2003, and my superdrive is a model PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D that used to brun any kind of dvd's an cd's and had no problem to read burn dvd's.
But now, it can only burn DVD-R (but no problem for the CD's) and most of the old Dvd's that i burned on my G5 can't be read anymore.
Can someone tell me what's the problem and how can it be solved.
    thank you very much.
    bye.
PS: Is it normal thaht i've never been able to read a DVD's burned from windows on MAC OSX but CD's yes?

  • After SL-DVD drive won't read any dvd-ejects it after spinning some time

Yesterday I bought the SnowLeopard DVD in order to do the update of my Mac OS.
Right after inserting the DVD in the drive (MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221) it started to have some problems with reading the DVD.
The Drive has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my Toshiba laptop.
I tried several times, but the drive isn't able to read the DVD and now has the same problem with other CD-Roms and DVD.
I am very suprised (and angry) about it, especially because I hardly use the drive.
As a lot of other people are having the same problem, there seems to be a structural problem with the drive and I think that Apple has to clearify if they are planning to do something and what.

Mine MacBook seems to be doing almost the same thing. The SL disk spins a bit then is ejected. It does the same thing with my first SL disk and the one Amazon sent as a replacement. I had the same trouble with the 10.5 Install disk purchased retail. Apple sent a replacement Non-retail disk and it worked. I can burn DVDs and read DVDs I've burned.

  • DVD player won't recognize firewire DVD drive and won't install.

I bought a Sony firewire DVD drive so that my wife could watch DVDs on her iBook. I can't get Apple's DVD Player to install on the iBook because it says it doesn't recognize any appropriate hardware.
Does anyone know how to get it to recognize the firewire DVD player and install?
If not, does anyone else know of a good third party DVD player for this iBook. I installed one, I think it is called Xine or something like that. It playes the DVDs but is "glitchy."
    Thanks very much,
    Ted Vieira

Actually, since posting the question I found an answer in an ealier thread...
I'm still not sure about getting Apple's DVD Player to work with an exernal drive, but you can get a free VLC Medea Player that works great at:
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
I was able to download this and install it. It was a little "glitchy" with USB 2.0, but worked fine with FireWire.

  • DVD Drive won't read blank DVD+R or DVD-R media

It just, ehm, won't. I've tried both, and I've never had any problems reading DVDs or writing CDs, though this is the first time I've tried to write to a DVD. When either disc is in the drive, the computer acts as if it's simply not there--Explorer, Nero, and everything else all act the same. Help would be greatly appreciated, because this DVD is fairly important...
I'd be more than happy to answer any questions about the problem, if you have any.

  • DVD player doesn't read Tiger DVD

I am running Panther and I am trying to upgrade to Tiger so I bought the Tiger DVD from the Apple Store. My G5 wouldn't recognize the DVD. I tried other DVDs that I own, both commercial and burned from other computers, and they all worked fine on my computer. I took back the Tiger DVD and got another one and the new one did the same thing. I don't want to bring in my computer to be fixed (especially as every other DVD works). Any suggestions? I can stick with Panther I guess.
    Thanks for the help.

Did you hold down the C key while booting to the Tiger disc.
