My external harddrive won't stay mounted in Lion

Hi gang!
I just upgraded my OS to Lion and I really like it for the most part.  What I don't like is that for some reason my external HD keeps "unmounting" itself.  I'm running 10.7.1 and my external drive is a WD 500GB drive using FAT32 formatting and connected via USB 3.0.  The drive will mount for a short period of time, then the error screen pops up saying its been "improperly removed".  Any suggestions would be awesome, I keep a lot of work files on my external drive.
Thanks!

I just solve the problem after 45 minutes with the lervel 3 WD support. You have to return to firmware 1.02.06 since the 1.02.10 version has a network card driver error and in some configurations (a lot more) the disk just stay connected for a couple of minutes. To do that you have to manually return to old firmware but WD do not has the file as public so you have to call them. One way to stay connected a bit more is making a permanent ping to the disk.

  • External HD won't stay mounted

I have a WD Passport (1TB) that's been exhibiting some strange behavior lately. When its plugged in, after a couple of minutes an error message will appear that says:
The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off.
Which is a normal enough error in itself, but it starts to get weird immediately as the error appears. Its almost as if the drive is automatically unmounted, however OSX appears to think that the drive is still mounted. This causes Finder to lock up and the mac has to be hard-booted. I've tried to get the drive to successfully mount on several different computers here in our office and different versions of OSX, to no avail. I've also been able to quickly get a Verify Disk in via Disk Utility, which says that the drive is fine.
Has anyone had any previous experience with something like this in the past? What else should I try to diagnose the problem? While I'm getting plenty of google results for the error message mentioned above, nothing's popping up quite yet that matches the specific symptoms of the drive unmounting and whatnot.

Tried this and it definitely had an impact on the operation of my MacBook, but in the end, no change. I deleted the preference file and restarted a couple times prior to trying to open my external HD, but same result.
I also simply pulled the pref file and left it on the dektop, restarted, and same deal. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas?

  • IPod Nano won't stay mounted

Hi this is my first post and hope someone can help. My problem is that when I attach my nano to my computer it will mount on the desktop, open iTunes check and see that it is update, which it is and then it umounts from the desktop within a few seconds. It remains in the iTunes window so I can access the nano preferences but then when I hit apply it searches for the nano and since it is not on the desktop says it can not find it. The iPod is not in the finder window but shows up in the system profiler as being attached to the USB. I am up to date on iTunes and the nano updater says it is up to date running 2006-06-28. I have tried everything such as restarting, using different USB ports, etc... to no avail. When I run the updater it stays mounted on the desktop but I can not acces the preferences. I really need to change my nano preferences as it will not update my new playlists because prefs, are set to update only the checked ones and I can not changes this and apply it if the nano won't stay mounted. Can anyone help? Much thanks

This happened to me when using iTunes 6. Is that the version you are using? I was never able to find a complete answer to the "Preferences not saved" error or any knowledge base articles with an official explanation. I did however find a workaround in a previous discussion. Connect your iPod and in the short time that it is still visible on the desktop just as iTunes is opening, go to Preferences>iPod and tick "enable disk use". You have to be quick but it can be done. Once it is enabled you will be able to go back and update the preferences such as manual update etc. and and you'll not get the error.
If you are using iTunes 7 try the same technique only tick "enable disk use" in the Summary tab before your iPod unmounts.

  • IPod won't stay mounted to computer, can't load any content

I've reset it, tried to repair it with disk utility, and it still won't stay mounted. Can't put any content on it.

Koopie, the bad news is: that's not at all an uncommon problem with the iPod Touch. I have the same problem at work. We have no problems at all connecting to our Wi-Fi with Dell, Sony, HP, Asus, Palm or any other devices except two: my Touch and my boss's iPhone. Apple has the most finicky Wi-Fi known to man.
But enough ranting. The first thing you'll want to do is to check to be sure that your router's firmware is up-to-date. That may just solve your problem; it does in some cases. I've also found that turning the Touch's Wi-Fi off and on sometimes helps. You may have to do it four or five times to get a reconnect. You might also check your router's instructions to see if there is a way to reset it by going in through your web browser, which may be more convenient than pulling the plug.

  • External Harddrive won't work on iMac

I have an external harddrive that I previously used on my PC. It only has generic JPG files saved to it. When I plug it in to my iMac it is read only and will not allow me to save things to the disk. In the information menu it shows that it is read only and I cannot modify the files or create new folders.
What do I have to do to make this work? Is there any initialize process or something?

The safest thing to do would be to get a new external drive. Look up the reviews via Google on the external drive before buying. Best to get a drive that is Mac friendly.
    You could try this driver:
NTFS-3G for Mac OS X is a read-write (finally) NTFS file-system driver. This means we can finally write to memory sticks larger than 4GB (formatted with NTFS).

A bad driver would trash your external disk. Backup important data.

  • External Harddrive won't mount anymore

    Hi Guys,
I recently copied over a load of stuff from my harddrive to my iMac but today it seems not to be playing ball. I've looked up the drive on Drive Utility and it is recognised there except i can't repair, mount or verify the drive.
Has anybody experienced this before and if so do you know what i have to do to fix?
    Cheers
    Jim

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC and try Disk Utility again. If still no joy, try something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools.

  • After installing Leopard External Harddrives won't mount.

I have 5 EHD connected to my iMac. After I installed Leopard, none of the drive show up on the finder nor in Disk Utility. I tried resetting the PRAM but no go. I checked then drives on my iBook and they mount. I did disk repair but it said no repairs were necessary.
I check system profiler and it can't find anything in the Firewire ports. I have a firewire connected printer that is also not showing.

I can get the HDs to show up if I don't use the hub.

  • External harddrive won't shut down in Mavericks

    Hi all,
I have an external hard drive from which I boot OS X Mavericks on my iMac late 2007. In all previous OS X versions, the harddrive would shut down whenever I put my iMac to sleep. Now with Mavericks it won't anymore. It will constantly spin while the computer is sleeping. I have to completely shut down to make the harddrive switch off. Is anybody else expierincing this kind of problem, and does anyone know how to solve this?
    Cheers
    Oli

*****FireWire and thunderbolt HD interfaces seem to be universally affected.   I've seen no exemptions yet to same
Its happening on 80% WD Raid My Book on this board and others, and happening entirely on Firewire and Thunderbolt drives
Its seen on O Raid and 1 Raid both alike.
also occurring on LaCie (Seagate) FW drives.
until resolution , use external USB drives proven to work with Mavericks.

  • External harddrive won't show in windows explorer Windows 7

I have an interesting problem or so I think it's interesting. I have a n HP Pavilion DV6-7001ax,  Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit just turned a year old.  My problem is I had a 1tb western digital My Book Essential it's alos about a year old.  Two days ago for some reason It stop showing up in windows explorer.  I tried everything I know to get it to come back but no luck.  I thought the drive was dead, however I hook the drive up to my wife's desktop and after it installed the drivers it works just fine, she's using Window 7 Ultimate x64.  I tried it in my daughters laptop, she has a HP Pavilion also model under mine, the drive works just fine she's using windows 8 64bit and I have another laptop wich has Window 7 Home Premium 32bit and the external drive works just fine on it.  So I tried and tried and tried but it won't work.  My wife and daughter both have a 1tb seagate external drive and both work just fine on my laptop.  Note: I've plugged in several different USB devices and they all work except my WD external drive.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Seriously Frustrated

    AntonBC57,
    Turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
    Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.
Open up command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.
This will scan the system files and correct any errors that it can.
Here is a link to command prompt.
When you go to open command prompt, right click and run as administrator.
Since it has not been to long since the problem started, you can run a system restore.
This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.
Here is a link on how to do a restore.
Let me know how everything goes
    Have a good day.

  • CD Won't Stay Mounted

I can't seem to get my audio cds to mount correctly the first time I insert them. I will insert them and after a second it will mount and show that it is accessing gracenote but then it unmounts and my drive acts like there is nothing in it. Then I insert it again and it instantly mounts and works fine.

I just got my machine a few days ago from Apple Store. I have been trying to import a few cd's and I ran into this problem. My machine is completely updated to the latest versions for OSX and iTunes.
I have read all the posts in these forums for this topic. I am a bit taken back that there is no fix.
I will give my 2 cents and a work around.
I went in and changed my options for iTunes:
Advanced > Importing > On CD Insert:: Import CD and Eject
After I did this the problem is gone now for 20 + cd's. So I think it is an iTunes problem keeping the CD mounted.
I am going to use my support and give them a call and express my disgust with this issue!
Thanks for all the help people

  • CD or DVD won't stay mounted

Last night, I was moving some music from a CD to i tunes, when the music started to sort of skip (the CD was pretty scratched so, I didn't give it much thought), then the CD would spin then stop and then spin again like the drive was in some kind of loop.
The CD would not eject until I restarted and now, the drive will not except any CD or DVD. The disks pop out right after I slip them in.
This sounds expensive. Could it be a software thing?
The Mac Mini is about a year old and the drive has worked like a champ up to this point.

  • External Harddrive AdataHV610 Random Ejects from MBP2012 Lion OSX

    Title pretty clear.
My new external ejects ONLY from my macbook pro laptop.
It's the new Retina, just bought it this month.
The external drive has been tested on other PCs as well.
So I believe I can rule out the possibility of connection problms from wire or harddrive.
Another Seagate USB3 external has also been tested on my MBP without these problems.
    Suggestions welcome.
Most recently had a diagnostics check at Apple store. Everything Green Light!~

Fixed my issue issue with my retina macbook pro and my usb 3 western digital drive. The drive would disconnect on the right port when being written to. I just installed the latest firmware from western digital from their download section. It notes in there that the older firmware had issues with intels usb controller which the macbook pro retina uses.

  • Why won't my FireWire HD partitions stay mounted on my desktop?

Why won't my FireWire HD partitions stay mounted on my desktop? I recenly purchased a quad interface 500GB external HD from OWC (which is connected via FW800). I then partitioned it for TIME MACHINE, some room for a backup of my primary HD, and partitions for boot disks for LION, SNOW LEOPARD, & TIGER. All partitions seem to be OK as well as the backup I made of my primary HD (using SuperDuper). My Energy Saver prefs are set to sleep the display in 3 minutes and the Hard Drive in 15 minutes. I fried one of my processors on the old Quicksilver by setting the Hard Drive sleep to NEVER. Don't want to make that mistake again on this Mac Mini, but I'm afraid that it is these prefs that are causing the primary internal HD to sleep, and at the same time lose my new external HD. Mysteriously, I have a SimpleTech 160GB HD with two partitions connected via USB2.0 and these NEVER dissappear.
Anyone have some helpful advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it's now Sunday, around 11:00am. What I have discovered has nothing at all to do with Energy Saver prefs as I had previously suspected. This morning, after having unchecked the box that would "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible," I woke the computer and discovered that once again all partitions of my new external hard drive were no longer mounted. So I thought of trying something new.
Because I believed it to be insignificant, I failed to mention that this hard drive has two FireWire 800 ports. One is connected directly to the Mac Mini, the other I used to daisy chain a connection to my iSight camera (FireWire 400) using a bilingual cable. I wondered if the daisy chain might be causing a problem somehow. Incidentally, the iSight camera launches iChat whenever I turn the new HD off and then on again. An action which has always caused the missing partitions to mount. iChat launches even if the aperture cover is closed (turns camera off). Note: connected this way the iSight camera has been working fine.
So this is what I tried next. I simply unplugged the bilingual cord connecting my iSight camera. The first time the computer went to sleep, when I woke it again all the partitions were right where they should be. So I took the next step by once again checking the box next to "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible.” Now the Energy Saver prefs are once again set exactly the way they were before I bought this new drive. I left for church at 7:45 and returned around 11:00am. Again, when I woke the computer all partitions of the new drive were exactly where they should be.
So, problem gone. But now how do I connect my iSight camera? And why is it causing all the partitions for the external drive to drop from the desktop every time the computer sleeps?
I have a son in the Navy and use the iSight to video chat when he is overseas. Is there something obviously wrong about the way I had the iSight camera connected? I would certainly welcome any help or suggestions.
    Thanks in advance,

  • My dumb external LaCie won't mount.....AAARRRGGHH!!!

I'm really hoping someone can help me here. I was working on some illustrations and in Manga studio debut, i opened a window to post some work i created into my external harddrive. I mistakenly hit the "eject" symbol that unmounted my hard-drive from my computer. So i said to myself,"No biggie... i'll just shut the drive off, unplug it, wait awhile, replug it, shut it on and it'll mount again.
    nope.
I shut it off, unplug it, restart the computer. plug it and turn the external harddrive power on... nothing. i wait patiently thinking it'll eventually kick in.
    no kicking.
i'm a 40 year old man i'm contemplating crying now... because more than 200 gigs of important work is on my drive and i can't access it.
That and stupid Leopard can't even do the most basic commands.. like accessing my printer. Just get that dumb beachball. Even opening System preferences gives me problems. More beachball.
I'm looking for help here. Please help.
How can i shed my computer of the recent upgrade and go back to 10.5.2?
and Since nothing can be wrong with my LaCie by just unmounting it, what can i do to get it to mount? Just leave it plugged on and powered and pray that the OS recognizes it and hope it mounts?
I don't have that kind of time.
If i need to retrieve all that data onto another new external, how much will that cost me?
I know i'm asking a lot of questions, but i'm desperate here.

The problem is that it won't mount after it has been unmounted. A friend of mine who's a Mac Repairman told me that it could be a number of things...
he told me to check if any smells were coming from the drive...
    nope. check.
If the fan had stopped working... nope. check.
If it's a problem being caused by the enclosure.... that i'm going to check on.
I called TekServe in Manhattan and when i get paid, i'm going to see if that's the case.
But they want 1200.00 for data retrieval in a worse case scenario... and i'm going to shop around for that one. I have a feeling that they corner the market in that area for Mac repair and they probably feel they can charge whatever they want and people will pay.
1200.00 is another computer. I'd rather do my research before shelling out that kind of dough.
I had unwittingly unmounted my first external 3 years ago .... it's a Wacom, and it mounted with no problem after literally a minute.
So i don't know why this LaCie is giving me problems.
So i'll try changing enclosures and check out reports for the companies with the best all-around reports on their externals before i buy.
It may not last forever, but i should get better than an external HD's "refusal" to mount once unmounted.
    It just doesn't make sense.
Besides, i have a feeling that my computer won't register it's existence if it doesn't mount to make itself known.
    Tell me if i'm off.
BUt i will consider the other programs that you guys have suggested.
