My G5 Doesn't Want to Sleep!

Can't get my G5 2.7 Dual Processor G5 to sleep. When I select "Sleep" it spins down to sleep, monitor goes off, then immediately clicks, fan revs and it's back up again. I've unchecked all my Energy Saver options, but still can't get the bad boy to take a nap. I see others have sleep issues, but don't see this specific problem here. I don't use sleep often, but it's frustratinig when I do.
G5 2.7 Dual Processor   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2 GB RAM

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
Hope this helps!
P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Cheers!

  • My iMac keeps waking up or it just doesn't want to sleep.

My 2009 iMac wakes up spontaneously or doesn't want to sleep. I have made sure no keys were pressed, no programs running, and the system doesn't wake from network activity. Is there a way to fix it? It all started as soon as I installed Yosemite.
    Thanks!

I had a problem similar to this and the problem was my mouse (what kind of mouse is on the Mac?) - it was so sensitive that very minor vibrations (like a door closing or a big truck driving by) would cause it to wake up the computer when I had put it to sleep. I simply power down my mouse after putting my Mac to sleep and the problem went away. Turn on the mouse and move it a bit and the system would wake up when I wanted it to, not randomly any longer...
Another possible issue is waking up from network accesses - this is in the "Energy Saver" System Preferences pane (in the Power Adapter tab) - do you have other computers or devices that might be trying to access the iMac while it was asleep?
    Good luck...

  • MacBook Pro doesn't want to sleep - EVER

My soooo out of warrenty MacBook Pro (mid-2010 OSX 10.9.1) has stopped going to sleep altogether. It does not go to sleep when you close the lid or when you go to the apple menu and press sleep, you can still hear the fans running all the time. I noticed this as I fully charged the battery, put it to sleep and then went to use it again later in the evening to find it has no battery left. The display and keyboard lights both go off when its closed or put into sleep manually but the indicator light on the front is always solid white and the fan constantly runs.  I have also tried resetting the SMC to no avail, have checked and restored my energy preferences to default, i have also disabled the wake on bluetooth and Internet options but still it will not sleep.
There is a lot of confusing information regarding this online and now i feel i am going round in circles!
Any help would be greatfully apperciated!

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computer  will not sleep if Internet Sharing is enabled.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
    Step 3
    Select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
    and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
    Step 4
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 5
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 6
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 7
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Puter doesn't want to sleep...

howdy... i have looked at all the obvious things, even restarted it?!? haven't had anything plugged in "that is any different than before" and none of the peripherals are ON trying to keep it awake... so what the frig?!?!
i have NEVER had an issue sleeping my tower... and i have sat here waiting for it to wake, and it doesn't (not immediately)... then later that night or the next day when i go to use it --- it's awake?!?! no one else in the family is using the computer and i moved the chair away so the cats don't get up on the desk and move the mouse...
    any ideas? thanks

Same thing here with my G5.
6 years old, never had a problem.
Always kept it updated with any software.
Suddenly, since a few days it keeps waking up from sleep, like 2 or 3 time a day.
    The system.log tells me this:
    *Jun 17 23:28:33 imac-g5 kernel[0]: System Sleep*
    *Jun 17 23:28:33 imac-g5 kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL this is a wake from sleep*
    *Jun 17 23:28:33 imac-g5 kernel[0]: System Wake*
    *Jun 17 23:28:33 imac-g5 kernel[0]: Wake event 0020*
    *Jun 17 23:28:33 imac-g5 lookupd[1088]: lookupd (version 369.8) starting - Thu Jun 17 23:28:33 2010*
*Jun 17 23:28:34 imac-g5 kernel[0]: USB caused wake event (EHCI)*
    *Jun 17 23:28:34 imac-g5 kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 52 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - received quads == 0. issuing bus reset*
And for each time it is waking up, the log has the exactly same messages than above.
I do not know which of these events is causing the problem.
But for sure the first event talking about waking up is IOBluetoothHCIController
However, my G5 bluetooth is off.
Can somebody make sense of all this ?
    Thanks

  • IMac doesn't want to sleep

My party animal 20" iMac will not go to sleep unless I force it to by going to "apple-->sleep". I have set the time at which the hard disk should go to sleep in the "Energy Saver" under Preferences, as well as put it on a schedule (go to bed every night at 11pm!), but it still won't sleep unless I manually tell it to.
any ideas on how to fix this?

If you have any applications running that can keep your iMac from sleeping. You can check in user(you)/application/utilities/Activity monitor. Just open Activity Monitor and you can see what's running. Just my 2 cents but if you check "put hard disks to sleep" in energy saver and have your screen turn off after 15 minutes since you used it. IMO that's a better way to go since you can schedule all the background things to happen when you don't need you Mac. Such as software update, spotlight indexing, idisk syncing, ect. I hope this helps, good luck.

  • Last night I went to sleep, and when I woke up, my iPhone was just turned off and it doesn't want to get any power.

My iPhone doesn't want to get any power; it was perfectly normal, and last night it just turned off by it self with 43% of battery.

Plug iPhone in with Wall Charger for 10 minutes, iPhone may turn ON itself. If not on, then keep on Wall Charger and Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to restart, may take around 20 seconds of holding both buttons.

  • My iPhone doesn't want to turn on :S

    Remove "Boom" and test.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • X1 Carbon doesn't go to sleep, keeps running with black screen - unresponsive

When I leave my computer for say, 20 minutes or so, it doesn't go to sleep (as it normally should with inactivity) but it is still running (I can hear the fan hard at work) but I can't seem to "wake" it back up. The screen is black and the laptop is unresponsive to clicks on the touchpad or closing and opening the laptop. I have to hold the power button down for ~20 seconds before it shuts down and then I have to turn it back on and re-open all my applications and windows to keep working.
This has been happening since I first got the laptop (August 2014). I've talked to Tech Support many many times. Nothing seems to work. They replaced my motherboard -- but that doesn't seem to solve the problem.
Is it just my laptop or has this happened to anyone else's?? Help!!

Nothing that anyone from IBM has told me to do has worked to fix this problem! They replaced my motherboard and notihng happened. They also told me to do many other things that haven't worked either.
Please report this to IBM as well! I want them to learn that I'm not the only one having this problem. I've been dealing with this since I got this laptop in August. It's ridiculous. I agree that my next computer purchase will NOT be from IBM! But don't call it an expensive loss! Fight for a new one! This is absurd.

  • Power light off, doesn't want to go on!

My ipod shuffle doesn't want to turn on, I tried to charge it for my whole sleep and it still hasn't turned on. I downloaded the updater and itunes again, and it seems fine when its plugged in the computer. The light is solid orang when is charging but when I take it out and switch the power switch, it does no want to turn on. Any help?

Does the status light ever turn solid green to indicate charging is completed?
What does the Battery Check light show when you've unplugged it?
What happens when you turn it on? When you press Play? Do any lights come on momentarily? Does anything else happen?
