  • What is the best way to shut down an iMac that has frozen during a data transfer? The disk I was writing to will not eject. Stopping "copy items to" doesn't work either_ it is frozen as well. Is there a way to force eject the disk so I can shut down?

Some more information on the above: OS: 7.2
    1. None of the shutdown commands would work so I held the power button down and received a prompt that asked if I wished to force eject the drive, I selected
the force eject and then shut down.
    2. Just recently I installed an eSATA _ Thunderbolt_ port multiplier compliant PCIe card (Seritek Q6G) into a thunderbolt external chassis (OWC Helios) (seritek Q6G).
This freeze data transfer also happened when I connected a Firmtek 5PM external tower to the iMac via thunderbolt cable.
The driver for the seritek Q6G was installed in the iMac previous to connection of any of the devices.
Both external towers mount ok on the iMac but have frozen during data transfer.
The initial freeze was with the Firmtek 5PM which is (JBOD)_ I thought that might have had something to do with the freeze_ it being JBOD_ so next I tried the Mercury Elite AL Pro Q2- which is formated in RAID 5. But then froze too.
Anybody have any experience with this?
    Maybe I need another driver?
Or maybe some update to my OS?
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    Thank you

Hello BDAqua, thanx for the suggestions. Before I saw this reply I tried to first quit the finder and then to relaunch the Finder but that resulted was a blank gray screen.
In the end I ended up having to power down the iMac.
Fortunately the RAID array that was "active" seems to be fine and also has a firewire 800 connection so I can use it_ just not with thunderbolt until this issue is solved.
I'm going to check in the Applications>Utilities>system log to see if any clues are evident_ thank you for the suggestion.
PS: Nothing of note was obvious as a root cause in the Activity Monitor though.
hmmm....I was told that the Helios and seritek card were compatable and that the Helios didn't require any drivers..it will be a drag if there isn't an easy fix for this since this new PCIe card from seritek is the first to offer port multiplier compatibility for eSATA to thunderbolt...since they are both new I'm hoping that an OS upgrade will be the fix (presently7.2)...we shall see.

  • IMAC CALANDER SYNCING TO ICLOUD

I AM HAVING A PROBLEM SYNCING MY IMAC CALANDER  WITH ICLOUD. ALL OTHER DEVICES SYNC OK TO ICLOUD.
I AM USING OS X 10.8.5 (12F45).  THE ERROR MESSAGE I KEEP GETTING IS

CAN ANYBODY HGEPL ME WITH TIS ISSUE
    THANKS

Add any missing calendar events from your Mac to your calendar on icloud.com.  Once the calendar on icloud.com is up to date, go to System Preferences>iCloud, uncheck Calendars & Reminders, choose Delete from Mac when prompted (they will still be in iCloud), restart your Mac and go back then check Calendars & Reminders again.  Your iCloud calendars will reappear on your Mac after a brief delay as they redownload.
If the problem persists, go to System Preferences>iCloud, click Sign Out, choose Delete at all the prompts (your data will still be in iCloud), restart your Mac then go back and sign back in.  Your iCloud data will reappear on your Mac after a brief delay.

  • IMac screen is frozen even after re-starting several times.

My iMac screen is frozen. I have used the alt-command-esc and can get the Force Quite box to come up but the box buttons are unresponsive. I have also alt-command and powered off and shift-key powered off (while holding for several seconds). When I turn the computer back on, it will boot up and begin with it's usual pop-up screens (APC PowerChute & Adobe Updater) which are currently unresponsive and just stay on the screen. I can run my mouse over the deck eyecons and it still tells the names of each, but nothing happens when I click on any of them. Same thing with any desktop eyecons and toolbars. Any suggestions on how to unfreeze the screen when I can't seem to be able to do anything?
    Many Thanks!

  • IMac 24" Leopard frozen on desktop

    Hello,
yesterday the computer just froze on the desktop page. The mouse arrow moves, and when I move the arrow to an icon, it's name pops up, but I can't enter anything, including the Apple icon to force shutdown. I called Apple Support in France, where I live. After shutting off with power button, unplugging and replugging in the system, we tried the command, alt, p and r keys as I started the system up, waited for the three chimes, let it go, but the system then went to desktop but was still in the same "frozen" out state. Next step was to turn off the computer and turn it back on, hold down the "C" and then we were maybe going to try to put in the Leopard upgrade disk and attempt a cure from there, but either I was doing something wrong, or in spite of holding down the "C" key until I saw the Apple logo and spinning wheel during start-up, and then releasing the "C" key, the computer just continued through start-up until opening to the desktop page and we are still in the frozen state. A week or so ago I did buy a mighty mouse bluetooth mouse, but it seems to be functioning fine. The Imac was also attached to a second lcd screen, which still functions as before, although I turned it off once the problem started. A few weeks ago I added 1 gb of Ram, but I Istat tested it almost everyday just to be sure that the system recognized and functioned properly. The machine is only a few months old and has worked pretty flawlessly, except from time to time the Microsoft for Mac "Word" didn't respond. I basically do internet suring and writing, whether on word or powerpoint. No heavy usage.
Any recommendations to get me back on track. Will I have to do a complete re-install? If so, can I retain my data? Or is this machine in need of Apple repair?
    Thanks

Thank you for your questions. The keys seemed to work when I pressed the Cmd, alt, P and R at startup, followed by the three chimes. I did notice that when I pressed the enter key, the name under the Hardisk icon opened, as if I was to rename the icon. I was so busy with the Apple Help, I didn't bother to plug in my USB mouse to see if was possibly the bluetooth mouse that was not clicking to open icons or files. A friend thought it might be the bluetooth mouse that was not clicking properly.
Unfortunately, I'm not in France for the next 4 days where the computer is, so I don't know if the cap lock, and keyboard work properly, or whether it's the bluetooth mouse or not. The fact that when I pressed the "C" key at startup and I wasn't able to stop the normal startup led the apple support person to believe that something big was wrong. Perhaps it simply the mouse that wasn't clicking....if I'm lucky...or maybe the keyboard. My friend that that if the machine, each time, booted up normally, that perhaps I won't need major work or a re-install.
    What are my chances here?
Thanks again, and I'll post the results of both using the usb mouse and your suggestion on the keyboard Monday.

  • Imac hardware test frozen

late 2012 27 inch imac has had a couple of startup issues, freezing at login screen or showing pixelated screen. hardware test has also frozen at checking memory phase. any others experiencing this?

Those who are experiencing it have a hardware fault. Take the machine in for warranty service.

  • IMac mail is frozen and slows computer, occasional screen flicker.

Anybody got a fix for frozen mail? It seems to slow down the machine and I've also noticed a flicker/buzz style jump to the screen occasionally and thinking it is related.

iMacs are not designed to have the graphics cards upgraded. If your old card is bad and you feel competent to exchange it for the same one that's really your only GPU option. Apple never said the iMac GPU's were upgradeable and frankly I've never heard of anyone successfully upgrading an iMac GPU.
As far as the adaptor well you could bring your system into an Apple Store and have it checked out by a Genius, it's a free service. I don't know how to make a reservation in Japan but I'm sure you can from the Japanese Apple site. The link in the US is:
    http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
I'm providing that so you can look for something equivalent.

Here is what I think I discovered after futzing around for 6 hours. I am booting an intel iMac off of a firewire drive and had the same thing happen.
I tried everything possible including what has been suggested here and on every other thread. I could boot into safe mode.
As a last resort, I decided to do an archive and install of a fresh system. To my surprise the install program would not let me install on my firewire boot drive. The message I got was that the disk would have to be reformatted to the GUID partition scheme. The disk was using the pre-intel apple partition scheme. A repartition was not an option as I would lose all data and settings.
I had a second firewire drive available and formatted it to use the GUID partition scheme and then used super duper to copy the contents of my non-booting drive to the one with the GUID partition scheme. When I rebooted the new drive, the system came right up and all my applications seemed to work.
I can only surmise the the 10.5.3 update doesn't like the old apple partition scheme.
I hope this is of help to someone out there.

  • Please help. Imac G5 17"  - frozen pink apple logo  start up

hi, i bought this imac G5 17" from a second hand store, it had no discs with it and i dont know what the running system is. i have always been a windows user but wanted to try a apple. i know very little about imacs that is why i am posting this so here is the problems.
1 - i turn the imac on, i can see the light come on at the front bottom right.
2 - i then can hear the start up tone.
3 - it then flashes only once(1 second)from a complete Red screen to a complete Pinkish white screen.
4 - then about 15 seconds later a Pink apple logo appears in the center of the screen.
5 - then about 1 minute later ( still on the Pink Logo Screen ) it sounds as if the fans are going flat out or the disc drive is going flat out and thats as far as it goes and the fans or drive stay on the whole time.
6 - i tried doing a safe mode ( holding shift as soon as you hear the tone and release when you see the apple logo with the spinning wheel bellow, but it still stays on the Pink apple with a spinning Pink wheel.
7 - i also tried holding the (command) button and it goes to a Pinkish white screen with a (refresh button) then a (hard drive logo) then a (arrow button) pointing right. the hard drive picture has a X on the bottom right of the picture. you cant click on the hard drive but when you press the (arrow button) it then goes back to the Pinish white screen wuth the pink apple logo and thats it.
i cannot find anything on the web to help and i have no idea how to fix this and cannot afford to take it to a apple dealer, so any help would be great. thanks
the sticker on the top of the monitor says,
    S-9495 (11/5/2010) SN: W84488U2PP6
    Apple, iMac G5 (17-inch)
i have no idea what this is, but you might. Thanks

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
You may be able to purchase replacement discs. Try here for contact information ---> Apple Store / AU You will need the serial number for replacement discs. SN: W84488U2PP6
    S-9495
Not certain what that number represents but someone else might.
Considering this iMac won't boot in Safe Mode isn't good. It could be the hard disk is failing or has failed.

  • My imac intel is frozen & closed padlocks after https!

I have 2 pages open. FB and another page. Mouse is working but nothing is clickable. Not even apple. I am in Safari. Please help!

    Hi fisaa,
It seems your Mac has frozen and you are unable to use certain elements. I would suggest using the Force Quit command. This will help you determine which app may be causing the problem. The following article will instruct you on how to use it:
Force an app to close on your Mac - Apple Support
To close an app normally, choose Quit from the app menu. If an app is unresponsive, you can force it to close using Force Quit:
Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, or press Command-Option-Esc
(this is similar to pressing Control-Alt-Delete on a PC).
Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, then click Force Quit.
    Learn more
Generally, you shouldn't need to use Force Quit unless you can't close an app normally.
The Finder is an app that your Mac keeps open, so there isn't an option to quit or close this app. If the Finder becomes unresponsive, you can use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit window, then click Relaunch.
If none of your apps are responsive, you can force your computer to restart.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Bobby_D

  • My iMac screen is frozen, yet the mouse moves across the screen. I can not open anything up. I have restarted it a few times.

The mouse keeps turning to spinning wheel. I think I have too many photos open on the desktop but I can not move them as the mouse can not pick them up

If the Finder is bogged down by too many items on the Desktop, you may be able to free it up by hiding the preview icons. Click anywhere on the Desktop to select it, then press the key combination command-J, or select
    View ▹ Show View Options
from the menu bar. In the dialog that opens, uncheck the box marked
    Show icon preview
You may now be able to move the items off the Desktop. Otherwise, start up in safe mode and try again.

  • Updating iMac to Yosemite - frozen at 7 minutes to go.

Downloaded Yosemite and started the installation.
After a restart the screen indicated 'Installing on Mackintosh HD about 18 minutes to go'.
Shortly after the screen indicated 'about 7 minutes to go'. That was about 2 hours ago and nothing has happened since.

I have rebooted and now the screen has reverted to 'about 18 minutes to go'.
I think I'll go and cut the grass and have a look later;-)

  • IMac Frozen URGENT!

    Hi,
My iMac 2008 has frozen today whilst browsing the internet, I was using safari and iMovie was open in the background, I am running OSX Mavericks and the latest version of iMovie.
I recently sent the mac to apple for a new hard drive due to this issue corrupting my Hard Drive, so the hard drive is under 6 months old, could somebody let me know what to do as I have an essay due tomorrow, and can't complete due to this!!
    Thanks,
    Dan

You may have stretched the system resources on an a 2008 Mzc running both Safari and iMovie simultaneously.
Just run Safari and see if the system freezes.

I had to do a hard close. When I turned it on again, I can use my other guest account profile, but mine will remain frozen and I can not choose anything. I can not even log out of my profile.
