Hey, any help?  My 24" iMac won't boot.  I only get a white screen when turning on.  It won't open in safe or recovery mode.  Any suggestions?

If you can't boot from your installer DVD, then take it in for service.

  • My friends hard drive failed on his 2009 macbook pro and he bought a new hard drive. we installed the hard drive and now all we get is white screen.

the macbook will not boot to the boot disc, or into startup disk control menu. is there anything else possible that we can do? we are slightly experiencvecd when it comes to these types of repairs. but this is baffling us.

We have tried this and it still goes to the white screen. One time when we were trying to boot from the disc (by holding "c" directly after the boot sound) we got a folder icon with a question mark in it. But it will not boot from the boot disk or go to the boot menu when you hold the option key upon boot.

I turned off my computer while installing something and now I only get the start-up screen with the apple logo. How do I fix this?

    Reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • I run several processes and now they only get some 30% cpu in total, pre-Mavericks they got 100% each – what has happened?

From Terminal I use gmake to run rather calculation intensive processes, usually in severel threads for several days. I need to process some 120000 files containing around 10 Tbyte data in total. The tools I use are implemented in C++ and have no GUI. Pre-Maverick this worked as expected: running four threads I got 4X100% cpu. After upgrading to Maverick I typically only get 30% in total. No other process is "stealing" cpu time, the computer is just sitting idle...
Basically, my calculations now run at 1/16 the original pre-Maverick speed due to the lack of cpu time.
In Activity Monitor I can tell that App Nap is off for these processes.
I disapled timer coalescing, but it didn't help.
Why are my processes somehow given such low priority?
How can I solve this issue?

Thanks for the reply. They might execute slightly faster after recompilation, but I don't really see why it would get me more cpu time? They execute as fast now as they did pre-Mavericks in terms of user+system time, but it does not help as they only get 1/16 as much cpu resources...
Anyhow, one should try everything. I did recompile and it didn't help.

  • IMac won't restart. Agreed to updates, rebooted and now only getting a white screen w/ flashing file folder w/ a questions mark?

I Agreed to recent updates, restarted my computer and all I am seeing is a white screen w/ a small flashing file folder icon w/ a question mark on it?  I've already unplugged, turned on/off and disconnected/reconnected Apple airport?

    Hi barnstorming7,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the computer boots to a flashing question mark. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Old iMac was sluggish and now won't go past blue screen.

We have a pretty old iMac, it will be 7 years old next month. I totally expect for it to slow down and have issues being that old, but was hoping I could maybe get a few more years out of it for my in-laws. We gave it to them 2 years ago and now it's going downhill. It has been sluggish for quite awhile and now will not turn on past the blue screen. No spinning wheel, just a blue screen and an arrow.
Is there anything we can do? Could we perhaps completely wipe the computer as there is nothing important saved on there? Would that even help? We are probably at the end of it's life here, but just thought I'd come for suggestions first.

I suspec the machine has had a hardware failure. If you can run Apple's Hardware Test, you will need the original install discs that shipped with the computer to do this. Run the test in Extended Mode at least 2-3 times back to back. The reason to run it multiple times is AHT is not 100% reliable however if it detects an error the error is correct. If you get an error that means a trip to the local Apple Store or AASP for repair, based on the vintage of the machine I woudl recommend an AASP. If you are aware of AHT then please click Apple's instructions located at:
    Using Apple Hardware Test
    Good luck!

  • Recently when clicking on Safari, it refused to open saying there were some components damaged. It was suggested I backup, remove OSX and reinstall. Now all I get is white screen and apple logo when starting. What to do?l

I Have an iMac desktop purchased in 2010 with OS X 6.1.6 and Snow Leapard. Recently after starting up, I was not able to open Safari. I checked for updates and all was well. I tried again and got a message saying Safari could not be opened because some components were damaged. After using Disk utilities to try and repair, it was suggested I uninstall OS X and reinstall from the disk. I did not at the time because I wanted to backup some info to a USB drive. But now when I startup all I get is the white screen and Apple logo and the loading symbol. What happened and How can Imfix it? I am not very tech savvy and don't know where to turn!

    Hi nancy mfromamity harbor,
Welcome to the Support Communities! It sounds like reinstalling the Snow Leopard operating system is your next step.  This should not affect the documents and data that you currently have on your iMac. I'll include the information to show you how below.
Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6606
Under some circumstances, you may need to reinstall Mac OS X. You can reinstall Mac OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.
Note:To reinstall Mac OS X from another computer on your network, see:
Using another computer’s DVD or CD drive
    To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X installation disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
If you want to control which parts of Mac OS X are installed, click Customize, and then select the parts you want to install.
To start the installation, click Install.
If you purchased a standalone version of Mac OS X, these installation instructions are in a PDF file located on the Mac OS X installation disc.
If you need to reinstall the version of Mac OS X that was on your computer when you purchased it, or if you need to restore all the software on your computer (including Apple software, third-party applications, and other printer drivers), refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
If you need to reinstall Mac OS X and you’ve been using Time Machine to back up your applications, files, and user settings, you can easily restore this information from your Time Machine backup disk after you’ve reinstalled Mac OS X.
Nancy, here is the contact information if you need technical assistance to get your iMac up and running.

  • I LOADED NEW HARD DRIVE IN MY MAC PRO AND NOW I'M GETTING A GREY SCREEN!

I REMOVED MY 160GIG HARD DRIVE OUT OF MY MACBOOK PRO AND REPLACED IT WITH A 320GIG NOW WHEN I GO TO LOAD MAC OS X DISC I GET A GREY SCREEN THAT READS CAN'T FIND DRIVER! CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK THE PROBLEM IS OR WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT.

Did the computer ship originally with a Tiger 10.4.x system, and was the Snow Leopard 10.6
disc used to upgrade the OS from 10.4 to 10.6? Or are you using a Leopard 10.5 disc?
Sometimes an error can result when reinstalling a later OS in a computer that had been
running an older computer, when the former setup had seen a firmware update. And in
a few other situations, if 10.5 was skipped, and OS 10.4 to 10.6 was the path, a few users
had noted problems later on. Since you did not note if the computer was new enough to
have shipped with Snow Leopard (thus perhaps had AppleCare plan coverage, too) these
other questions arise to find those details.
There is some conflicting (or missing information) in your posts; just enough
to see the problem may be in what you have and how you are using it.
Is the latest software version you have a full retail version of the OS X, or was it an upgrade
disc (such as the low-cost upgrade for Snow Leopard) used over an older 10.4 OS X version?
Was a firmware update performed on the computer with the other installation of this software
before you replaced the hard disk drive? Sometimes a firmware update to the logicboard may
cause a problem in later installs of an older OS X than the last one the firmware update was for.
If there were jumper pins to be set specific to use it correctly in this computer, before installing the
new hard disk drive, and if they were not set accordingly, the computer may not see an install disc
or be able to use the disc to install an OS X. Other difficulties may result, if not immediately.
There are details missing in this discussion which may pertain to the outcome.
{And I pointed out your new thread on this same topic to forum moderators, since
you already had this one with replies; as duplicate questions are often not helpful.
    That was in the Tiger 10.4 discussions area.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • G5 acting very strange and now will not get past grey screen with Apple log

Hi I have had my iMac G5 for a few years and it was working perfectly up until today ! When I switched it on and it started playing up. Every application I opened would randomly shut down. For instance, Safari would crash and mail would crash, as well as the finder refreshing itself. This settled after a short while. Therefore I thought things were fine until I pressed the < or > buttons in finder and the system would refresh itself ! Weird ! Fortunately I backed up all of my iTunes.
I can see the hard drive when I hook it up via firewire to my MacBook Pro.
The problem I have now is that the machine will not boot up ! It gets stuck on the grey screen and after a short while the fans kick in like the thing is ready for take off !
    Any ideas ?????
    Thanking you in advance !
