My iMac's DVD Rom Stuck! I can't insert any Disk.

My iMac's DVD rom is not accepting any disk.
If I try to insert a Disk, it only goes half way. Something is BLOCKING the disk from going in.
The last time I used the DVD rom was last week, it ejected the disk so hard, the DVD Disk actually fell on the floor...after that, It's been stuck until now.
Is the DVD rom broken?
My iMac is Core 2 Duo 2.4 [2007-2008 model]
Thanks.

Yes, your DVD drive is busted.
Contact your Local Apple Service Provider and make an appointment to have is serviced.

It will be covered if you have Apple Care, if not call around and get some estimates.

HI all - I have a TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2312. It reads and plays CDs and DVDs but I'm trying to burn a video onto  a DVD and when I place the blank DVD R into it to burn, I get a "Please insert media" message. The DVD-R that I'm putting in is brand new so there shouldn't be any problem there. It's driving me nuts!! It may well be that this is simply not a DVD burner - I may just be that stupid. If not, is there any way to fix this problem?

Hi friends, I am stuck in my MacBook pro which shows white screen .

2- I tried hold Shift and option to log to safe mode , but it's not working .
    3 - I tried reset ram , but its not working .
Any advice ? I am stuck and can't do anything :(
    Regards

It would be helpful to know which MBP you have and which OS you're running.
Read the following and try the advice listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    Ditto: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US
Also, some things which cause a gray/white screen cause it to take much longer doing anything, so you may want to try some of your previous efforts and wait 5 minutes or so after each.

  • Imac with 3Gb fusion drive  "no bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key.  This started over the past 2 weeks, and now occurs every day.  Initial boot to MAC OSX is Ok.

I receive the above black screen 'no bootable device' error message daily, after not using my imac for a while.  I will note that the computer will boot normally, and after a while, the screen saver initiates.  Some time later, I get the black screen error message.  I have to hard boot the computer again at this time.  Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help,
    JTH

That message means that your Mac restarted and that no bootable volumes were found. First, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose Macintosh HD. Then, see if the problem appears.
Also, open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and verify it. This may be a sign of a hard drive failure

  • IMac g3 dvd drive not responding

    Hi,
I just installed a 4X dvd drive in my iMac g3 600 mhz. The drive is one that was taken out of an older iMac g3 so it's the matushita drive. I took out the cdrw drive, installed the dvd drive and booted up. Everything booted up fine, but when I put in a disk, it sounded like it is reading it, then it made more of the "reading" noises and after about a minute it spits out the disk. The sytem profiler recognizes the drive, so i'm a little confused on why it isn't reading the disks I put in. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks.
    -Aaron

Are you attempting to read DVD-R and/or DVD+R disks? You may need to change the brand of media that you're using in the other computer(s) burning these disks. Some drives are very temperamental when it comes to reading disks. I bought some of Best Buy's inexpensive Dynex blank DVD media and my B&W G3's Pioneer DVD±RW burner will complete the burn with verification. I can re-insert the disk minutes later and get the same result that you're hearing - spinning up and then down and then up etc. - as it attempts to make heads or tails of the same disk that it burned. If you buy a better brand of media - like Verbatim, you may have better luck. If the iMac's DVD-ROM drive works better with the +R media, then avoid using the -R media (and vice versa).
If you're having this problem with commercially-produced DVDs, then the drive itself may have a hardware problem. I'm assuming that you purchased a used DVD-ROM drive, as opposed to having swapped it from another iMac that you've always owned. Used drives can be a problem, particularly when you don't know how much usage they've had prior to being pulled and sold.

  • Can't restore from Disk Utility while booted from OS installation DVD

    I'm absolutely astounded by this.
I have a new MacBook Pro 17". I restored my files to it and in short order, had it too full/fragmented to re-partition it for Boot Camp.
So I decided to image the disk and store that image file on a FireWire drive, wipe the system disk and restore it cleanly from the image file backup, hoping that would result in contiguous blocks used so that I could then re-partition for Boot Camp.
When booted off the OS X for Intel DVD-ROM disc (10.4.6 - the one that came with my MacBook Pro), if I get out of Installer and into Disk Utility, if I select the internal hard drive and click the Restore tab, I can easily select the hard drive backup image with the button. But the "Destination Disk:" box is only accessible via dragging the disk to the box.
There's one little problem - there is no Desktop, so the disk(s) do not appear on the Desktop. There is no way to drag the target disk to be restored to into the Destination Disk: box. You cannot drag a disk out from the little sidebar inside the Disk Utility window over to the Destination box. I tried. You can't drag any disk anywhere from that sidebar. It's clear that the only way to drag a disk anywhere is if it's shown on the Desktop in Finder (which isn't running when the installation DVD-ROM is booted from). There is simply no way that I can find to restore a disk drive from a saved backup disk image when booted from the installation DVD-ROM.
Please tell me I'm ******** and missing something, or if there's a Better Way to do this. (I can't seem to run Retrospect while booted off the DVD-ROM, so I can't restore from my Retrospect full backup of the disk, either. Joy!)
(I'm really curious if there's a Better Way - especially because it appears I can't boot from an external FireWire or USB 2.0 drive, so I need something that will work in this extremely limited installation DVD-ROM booted environment, I think.)
MacBook Pro 17" dual 2.16 GHz ;   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Booted from Mac OS X for Intel 10.4.6 installation DVD-ROM

You can use an external bootable drive with a MacBook Pro -- check your manual or the built in help. Your problem is that for some reason, you can't install a bootable system on one. There are several reasons why Installer won't enable you to do so: insufficient space, incompatible partition scheme (should be GUID) or file system (should be HFS+ or similar), or wrong installation option selected.
It is possible this is related to why you can't drag the startup volume to the destination box in Disk Utility. It must be an HFS+ variant file system.
I think you should check carefully with D.U. the partition scheme of all your drives & the file system format of all the volumes involved. Also run repair disk, as someone has already pointed out.
The behavior with the Restore function is not normal -- you should be able to drag a volume to the destination box from the list.

  • Sunblade 1000 will boot from CD-ROM or DVD-ROM

I have Sunblade 1000 with a pre-installed Solaris 8 OS. I originally purchased the workstation without a CD-ROM. I bought an old Sun 411 CD-ROM. After installing the 411 CD-ROM, I entered "boot cdrom". Somehow it will not boot from the CD-ROM drive. When I do a "probe-scsi-all" I will often get "fatal scsi errors", but sometimes the SCSI info will be displayed, bizzare. When I type the explicit or long device name with the boot command, it still will not boot. After looking for solution in the Internet and exhausting a few UNIX friends from my questions, I called Sun. According to Sun, the only compatible CD-ROM for the Sunblade 1000 is the DVD-ROM, which is OEM by Sun,and usually ships with this workstation.
After, getting over the shock that Sun sold the Sunblade 1000 without providing backward compatibility, and suffering the humiliation of spending much need company resources for a potentially useless CD-ROM, we broke down and bought the DVD-ROM.
After spending $500 dollars for the DVD-ROM, the Sunblade still cannot boot from the DVD-ROM. If I boot from the disk, and after the system comes up, the DVD-ROM shows that it is mounted, I can browse it's content, etc.
I currently have the Solaris Installation CD in DVD-ROM drive. I also tried booting off the Solaris 2.51, and 2.7 CDs. Here are some info that comes back when I entered the various commands:
    ok banner
    SUNW, Sun-Blade-1000 (UltraSPARC-III), Keyboard present OpenBoot 4.0, 512 MB memory installed.....yada yada

Fatal SCSI error at script address 8 Illegal instruction
    Thanks in advance,

I'm quoting from an old usenet article from Tony Walton
    (@...sun.com)
    http://groups.google.com/groups?q=solaris+probe-scsi-all+reset+auto-boot&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&site=groups

You should only run probe-scsi after the hardware has reset
but before it's initialized to start running Solaris (you
might get away with stopping then running probe-scsi early
in the boot sequence, but that's only a matter of luck,
    really).
The recommended sequence is to disable autobooting if it's
set (so the machine won't boot itself automatically after a
PROM reset), then reset the hardware, then probe-scsi, then
re-enable auto-booting (if it was enabled in the first
    place).
So, go to the ok prompt, then
    setenv auto-boot? false
    reset-all
    probe-scsi (or probe-scsi-all)
    setenv auto-boot? true
    reset-all

  • DVD-ROM contents missing on DVD

I have added about 500 MB of picture files to the DVD-ROM Contents of my DVD project. The Project Info screen shows the DVD Capacity at "2.2 GB of 4.2 GB" and all of the picture files (as far as I can tell) are listed in the Media list of contents.
The problem I am having is that the burned DVD from this project only includes a single picture within the "DVD-ROM Contents" folder of the finished product. Is there a solution for this? All of my software is up to date as of today.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Cool... I can do this.
How long (in minutes) is the movie?
    14 min, 22 23/30 sec
Did you use the movie in any motion menu drop zones?
Nope. I only used two photos in a single drop zone (and neither is in the DVD-ROM contents.
Did you use any unusual characters in the file names
of your images? Can you give us an example name?
They are all the default names from the camera (e.g. P6110006.JPG) and appear to only have standard letters and numbers.
Are the images on the same hard drive as your iDVD
    project file?
    Yes, they all are.
    Thanks!
