My iMac sorrows... #1, #2, #3, #4 and now maybe #5

Well, for those who have read my other posts regarding my horrific experiences of iMac terror, I do truly hope this is the last.
iMac #1: 24" Aluminum iMac 2.4Ghz had original and common freezing problem, was replaced on day #88 after 11 days of sitting in AppleCare where replacing the logic board did not resolve the issue. (Bad timing, 2 days later the patch came out that fixed it)
iMac #2: They replaced my first iMac with a 2.8Ghz at my request and with my credit card for the difference. Unfortunately, I was back in the Apple Store the next morning because the backlight within the screen was bleeding bright light whenever the screen was black (screen savers, front row, image editing).
iMac #3: The second iMac was replaced without hesitation and I confirmed everything was functioning fine and operating well before I left the store. I gave it a full run through. Was very happy.
iMac #4: Yesterday, I returned to the Apple Store with my broken iMac in it's poor little box because after 3 weeks of use the hard drive fan was apparently going out and sounded like a playing card in bicycle spokes. Horrible, but what am I suppose to do. They offered to repair, but didn't have the part in stock so they replaced it AGAIN.
At this point I am really losing my sense of humor and tolerance here, if you can imagine.
NOW: You'd think that iMac #4 is the end... Well not necessarily. I am heading in to the Apple Store in a little less than 3 hours to bring in iMac #4 because the right internal speaker is blown (or at least sounds this way) and you cannot bring the volume up past 1/2 way or all sound from the right speaker is garbled.
Apple Care this morning confirmed that it is in-fact a bad speaker and it will need to be repaired, or in my case replaced.
I am not happy with what has happened, although I can see that reality suggests I have extremely bad luck or the rest of this planets iMac owners have bad eye sight and bad hearing. I know there are working iMac's out there. I just can't find one.
I really don't think I am being picky at the least. I haven't had an iMac that is working as intended for 110 days. Just simply rough.
Anyway, I am going to shut this audible distortion mechanism down and box it up and hopefully I can get a solution real quick as I haven't slept at all while reloading, troubleshooting, AppleCar'ing, etc.
-- Oh, and my aversion to repairing and preference for replacements stems from them damaging the case of the first Aluminum iMac on 3 corners when I took it in the very first time. I don't want a Brand New "Repaired" iMac...

Update:
I walked in within just hours of the posts below, asked for the local Apple Store manager and explained the entire scenario. She was already aware of me as exchanges apparently require her signature.
She was absolutely wonderful, apologetic and empathetic to my situation as a small business owner and having such a bad run with these iMac's.
She didn't even want to check the iMac I brought in, she simply had it replaced, my memory swapped and allowed me to sit for 20 to 30 minutes checking everything to make sure it was good to go.
They even reassured me once again, that if this in fact happen to be bad as well, they would replace it again.
For my troubles (not necessary at all), they also offered me a nice price break on anything Apple the next time I come in.
Thanks Apple, and note this machine is running perfectly.

    The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
    I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
    One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
    In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

    After your iPhoto application got updated to a new version, iPhoto will convert the iPhoto library to a new format, that is used by the new version. The warning tells you, that after this upgrade older iPhoto versions will no longer be able to read the iPhoto library. If you have a second Mac with older software that might be important. Make a backup to be on the safe side and let iPhoto upgrade the library.

    Exactly how did you "reboot to reset"?
    Rebooting simply means shutting down the machine and turning it back on. That does not erase any data.

         If you cannot find your original serial number, you will have to contact Apple with a proof of purchase, see these links:

  • My iMac recently went through an update and now my imessages won't go through. I also am having trouble finding imessage on my preferences. Also, the code did not pop up on my iMac for me to input on my iphone 6plus

    On preferences on my iMac, there is no option for messages, when I go into messages on my iphone 6 plus it asks for a code but that code doesn't pop up on my computer. My iCloud is connected, wifi is connected and even my facetime is working, just not my imessage and it's really annoying. Can someone please help me?

    I think you can solve your problems by removing your AppleID email address from BOTH the Messages setting on your iPhone and the iMessages settings on your Mac.
    On iPhone:
    Settings > Messages > iMessage > Dissabled
    Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > touch the "(i)" < touch "Remove This Email"
    On Mac:
    Open "Messages" application
    Click "Messages menu > Preferences
    Click "Accounts"
    Select your AppleID account
    Under the "You can be reached for messages at" settings, uncheck your AppleID email address and your phone number
    Then uncheck the "Enable this account" setting
    And lastly, ask all of your friends with iPhones to delete all iMessage conversations (blue bubbles) in their entirety.
    To test, send a friend a new text using their phone number (not their email address) and watch the color of the bubble.  If it's green then you are using SMS.

  • IMac hard drive keeps going down and now will not boot up.

    This is my first post here so I hope I am in the correct area. I recently purchased a iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM. It ran well at first but now I keep getting errors that say "There has been a problem with your system, you must turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button on the back of the panel". This has been happening more and more often.
    I took it to a local Apple auth repair shop. The guy looked at it for 10 minutes, said everything is fine and sent me home.
    Now when I turn the computer on all I get is a blank white screen that never changes.
    I just switched from PCs to Macs, I have to say that I am more then a little frustrated with how poor the computer has been. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do now. I do have the Applecare for another 26 months. Thank you.

    This means Mac OS has crashed. Mac OS shouldn't crash too often. You should give applecare a call. They'll probably tell you to re-install the OS.

  • My iMac 2006 had a crashed Lion and now does not accept any Lion installation.

    I have tried to install my Lion from an external drive. This drive has basic Lion on it and runs great with my iMac.
    However installing the Lion on my iMac fails constantly. I have reviewed the installation protocol and can not find a clue. It seems as if the drive was wrong but the disc checker does not find a clue when it is empty. I did several partition processes and deleted it with various methods. However a volume of 310 MB was always left, although hidden to me.
    When I checked the protocol some errors occur. I can not judge, which critical at all. However this ReportCrash could be a hint.

    The problem was a hard drive with a bad storage area.
    I replaced the hard drive with an external drive and boot the OS X from there.
    Now all is good.
    That was solved a year ago.

    Yes thank you - I have done that and it worked - for one month while I have a free download. But I ultimately have to pay. I don't think it's fair to sell software, make it obsolete and then charge customers to upgrade.

    While using Microsoft Word, utilizing “Office Mac 2011 WPX Home & Student” edition, suddenly I was not able to use the Ribbon Bar?  I can no longer save docs, unless I end the doc and a micro script ask do I want to save it or not?   For any specific changes within the doc, I must end the Doc in order to have all changes SAVED.  I can no longer use all icons that I customize in my bar for my own use while working on a doc.  This is the same for all applications in Office Mac 2011. 
    I do a lot of Research and the “Icon Bar” really comes in handy and saves a ton of time.  I can no longer produce a new Word Doc from the top bar, now I must go to the bottom, and open up a new doc in the application itself of Word. 
    I had a Expert Team view what they felt are the problems and their answer is as follows.
    “a lot of registry keys associated withy Word application and security system files has been corrupted”  
    Their Solution:
    manually repair all the corrupted registried keys in order to fix all the issues

    This is a new IMAC and newly purchased Office MAC 2011.  This "Expert Team" want to charge money.   Since IMAC made their last installation this is what has happend, so I believe it is their responsibility to make any and all repair.  Please advise ASAP.  Thanks! 

    Hello, are you running Windows, or OSX??? I doubt there are Regitry keys in OSX, but don't have any MS Apps.
    If OSX 10.7.0 or later...
    Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Any change?

  • Keyboard issue I have a iMac thats about 4 years old, and now the keyboard is not working properly. some keys do not work. Any suggestions ?

    I think I may have a virus! My keyboard is not working properly. When I press the zero key, it doesn't appear. Other keys that do not work include the directional keys, delete key, and others. I tried everything that I can think of to fix it, but nothing sesems to be working. Should I bring the keyboard and=/or the entire computer into my local Apple store+? see, the +? appears before the question mark, and I didn't put it there! Thanks!

    No need to take the computer at this stage.   Just take the keyboard into your local Apple store for examination.   If you have another machine, not necessarily Apple, you could try the board on that or perhaps a friend's machine … they are largely universal.
    You do not have a virus.

    Updated to iTunes 11.1.2 on our iMac running OSX 10.6.8 and now iTunes won't open. It just doesn't respond at all no matter how I try to open it. Any suggestions?

    Download iTunes from Apple’s website and then install it to your computer to see if it opens up. Also try the steps in the second article as it may be able to open a previous version of the iTunes library and potentially open up as well.

  • Lost my laptop and now the iMac is playing up

    Soon after doing the latest updates for the security, Java and daylight saving with repairing permissions before and after as I normally do life was not the same.
    On my 12" it all began with the fan being very noisy, coming on for a while then turning off, however it is winter where I am and on 17 deg C. I started updating my address book, shifting vcf's from Entourage to Address book and found that both programmes stopped responding. This happened about 6 times and on each occasion I used Activity Monitor to shut them down. At the same time the screen would go black and the the laptop would go to sleep for a second then fire back up again. Last week I have the screen replaced as it was dying and a few months back my HDD was replaced.
    So then the thing would not switch off to reboot, so I had to pull the battery out and restart. This happened a couple of times so I put in the installation CD in order to run it to check things out. The lappy died with the disc inside and would not power up again.
    I took it to an Apple service centre in Chandigarh and have not heard a thing for 3 days. So either the update has killed it or the Logic Board has gone. Thank goodness for Apple Care.
    My iMac G5 had the same updates and now I find the FileMaker Pro 7 keeps crashing while I am building a new database which is at present only 328 kb.

    2 months ago the hard drive failed and last week the screen was replaced as it was fading out on the bottom left. Yesterday the logic board was replaced and also the DVD superdrive, all under APP warranty thankfully so I shall see how it works from now on. I will take the opportunity to increase the ram, shame the max is to be 768 but for e-mails and chatting that's fine.

The blue indicator in system audio panel will appear for a second as I slide the bar for internal mic but then it disappears. Is there a fix?

    The sound seems very faint but can here static on playback.
