The remote lock locks the iphone with a passcode that you set. By remote wiping the device it will simply restore it and clear it of all its data, but by doing this it will prevent you tracking it and communicating with it (e.g. remote locking it) in the future

IOS5 update erased all my app data AND all backups made prior to update...
I know there are lots of people who have had similar problems when updating with a PC but I still can't find a solution. So maybe there isn't a solution. But my question is this: I made two back-to-back backups of my ipad onto my friend's iTunes (on his PC). Then I sync'd. Then I updated to iOS5 (which did a final backup before it updated). When I restored, I was asked for a password -- when I never encrypted it with a password! So I tried every password known to me (on my iPad, iTunes, etc.) and I tried every password on my friend's PC. Nothing worked. Eventually, iTunes stopped asking me for a password. But whenever I tried to do a new restore, it would only give me the option to restore from backups made AFTER the iOS5 update. I have no idea what happened to the several backups I made BEFORE the update. What a pain! Does anyone have any ideas? I spent two and half hours on the phone with Apple Care last night. They had no ideas whatsoever. They kept telling me that my backups must have been corrupted. I don't know... feels like a cop-out on their part (even if they are right...). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx guys.
P.S. Oddly, my iBooks content remained in tact despite the fact that all other apps were gutted of content). And the native Notes app was also gutted of content. I guess from now on I will have to loop Dropbox into everything.I did look for the backups. The only backups showing are the ones that I made after the update (when I was sync'ing in a desperate bid to try to recover my app content). I did not turn off auto-syncing beforehand. In retrospect, I obviously made a mistake of some sort. At the very least, I should have made redundant backups, etc. But to continue, No, I am not sure that the backups were successfully made. But I am totally sure that the PC went through the motions of making at least two backups -- it said as much on the screen. Also, when I foraged through all the newer, hidden files on the PC, I found bits and pieces of the initial backup I made, all time-stamped correctly. I found the contents there for my iBook app, and I found backups of most but not all of my other apps (but not their content). So definitely there was some sort of general backup that took place. Just not the full backup/s I'd hoped for... Yes, iTunes did warn me that the iPad would be erased, but I assumed that was all part-and-parcel of the iOS5 update. That said, the first time I got the warning, I stopped the update and backed up (and then sync'd) again, just to make sure. Only afterwards did I go through with the update.
I am guessing there is not much I can do anymore at this point. But thanks for the feedback and, if you do think of anything, or anywhere else on the PC where I could try to look for the backups, please let me know. Thank you! Your help is much appreciated. -
can anyone tell me if i update my iphone to the new ios5 will it erase all of my personal things on it if i use a new computer and a new itunes that has nothing on it? or will the back up save all my music and pictures and stuff like that? thanks
I had to go through this today (got a new computer recently). I ended up pluggng in my phone to the new computer and then doing a sync and a backup, and Image Capture to get all your pics just in case. Then I did an update check wnen iOS 5 became active and it said that it was going to erase everything and I hit OK. And after that install was complete, I did "restore from backup" which said it would restore everything that was backed up except the new iOS 5 firmware (that stayed put). Just a few tweaks here and there and it all worked for me.

My sons iPhone 5 was stolen out of his blazer pocket while in a games lesson, this was last period and on return to get changed find that someone from his class had stolen his phone from his zipped pocket. Straight away I went onto the find my iPhone on my phone and it has been showing offline since the phone was stolen. The phone had a password set on it and I have notified the police, school and also our carrier. The phone has been offline now for 32 hours, would this mean they have been unable to access the phone and switched it off? Is it possible for the phone to be jail broken while this password has been set. I am most angry that this has happened and the changing rooms are always locked while the lessons take place, so this is someone within my sons class that has stolen the phone. Being a Friday And last lesson the phone is long gone now but I'm hoping with the security measures we have put in place with the pass code etc.... That they won't be able to unlock the phone to use it. The phone was only 2 days old as my son had only just upgraded :(
All you may infer is the device hasn't been turned on where it can connect to Wi-Fi.
The phone may be jailbroken if there is no lock passcode to prevent access. However, the phone can be completely erased and restored as new. In this case you will have no ability to locate it or prevent it from being jailbroken.

My iPhone 5 was stolen from me in a train station, the phones battery was dead, the iphone hasnt bee turned on yet, everytime I call it it rings once and goes to voicemail which tells me that it is still dead, nobody has charged it nor turned it on yet, the find my iphone app says its offline, and the sprint service representatives have told me that the phone has not been used yet. I dont want to disconnect my phones service just yet, becasue even if the thief restores my phone, and wipes out all of my information they cannot and will not be able to use it as if its theres because my carrier would still be connected on it. My hopes is that the thief will attempt to use the phone to make a call or to receive a call from my phone and then I will be able to find them tracing their calls. I did this once from my a blackberry that was taken from me and I found it... My question is can they erase all the information from my phone to the point of using it although i have not disconnected it from sprint????

Unless you are certain that it was stolen, don't overlook the fact it may have been turned in to a lost and found. -
i got new iphone and when i connect it to my pc, it lost all my current data and replaced it with the backup on my computer, which is from april. so i have lost all my calendar information and schedule. does anyone know how i can reverse this and get my information back?
Every backup replaces the old one, so, unless you included the backup folder in your computer backup routine, you can't get back your calendar info.
The only time iTunes will not replace a backup is, when you use it to restore from, this one will stay in the backup list in iTunes.

Can I retrieve my photos, notes, reminders and all other data in my iPhone, I mean, if I bought another one, and connect it to my computer and go to iTunes then restore backup, cause I backup my iPhone last Oct 10, 2013, will I recover all the details in my iPhone that was stolen? Once again, the Find My iPhone app has no effect on this.
Find My iPhone must be enabled with your iCloud account settings on the iPhone.
Location Services must be enabled.
The iPhone must be connected to the internet via an available wi-fi network or via the carrier's cellular network.
If the iPhone is powered off, none of the Find My iPhone features can work, and the same if the thief or whoever has access to the iPhone has restored the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone on another computer. -
My iPhone 6 was stolen and i got it back, but the pass code was changed and so was the touch-id. and now im locked out of the phone because ios 8.1 requires either of the passwords to access the phone. and iTunes doesn't recognize it so i cant restore it at all PLEASE HELP
Take it to an Apple Store, take proof of purchase with you.

My iPhone 4s was stolen almost a week ago now. If I can still see the phone listed in Find My iPhone but appears to be turned off does this mean the theif has not restored it to factory settings???
Are you sure? I have other devices at home. The only way I can make them disappear on the tracking list is by turning off location or resetting to factory settings.
I just want to make sure I'm not tracking a phantom that I will never recover :-( -

So my iPhone 4 was stolen and I need to get the serial number off of it to help find it. I looked online and an article (this one to be exact: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4061?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) told me to go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and then select my device and it would tell me the serial number. However, when I got to the devices menu, my iPhone didn't show up, but my dad's did. Any idea on how to get it to show up or an alternate way to get the serial number (I don't have the box or the phone)?
Yours was stolen, it will not show up in iTunes. There is no way to get your serial number unless you registered it with Apple: Your Support Profile for Registered Purchases.

Okay so my 64G iPhone 4S was stolen about a year and a half ago, it was backed up to my computer and I had used around 50G. I got a new iPhone a year ago but it's only 32G so I didn't have enough space to back it up as my old phone, so how do I get all my memory on my old phone back without having to get a 64G phone? No, there is no way to put more content then there is capacity for on the device. As wjosten mentioned, you might be able to edit that backup to remove things to reduce it in size where you could then restore it to the new device, but obviously, everything that you had on the old iPhone will never fit on the new one.
No matter what you do, you are going to end up with less content on the new device then on the old one - there is no way around that fact other than returning the 32GB iPhone and getting a 64GB one. A gigabyte of data is a gigabyte of data, regardless of device, and will require a gigabyte of storage again, regardless of device.
