Why is my ipod 5th generation not recognised in itunes in windows 8.1?Connection to my PC only charges the battery.

Did this iPod previously work with this computer (running Windows 8.1), and does not now for some reason? Or is this the first time (or the first time with Windows 8.1)?
The fact that only the battery charging symbol appears on the iPod screen seems to indicate that the iPod does not recognize a data connection. It's like you are connecting the iPod to USB (wall) power adapter. It is likely that the Windows system also does not see the iPod as a connected device; you should confirm by looking at Device Manager.
You should rule out a faulty USB docking cable. The dock connector has separate connection points for power and data, so it is possible for it to connect to charge the battery but not connect for data. So, if possible, try another docking cable, or try the cable you have with another Apple device.
You should rule out a problem on the USB port. If you connect something else to the same port, does it work properly? Preferably, you should use something similar, like a USB flash drive or port-powered external drive, and try copying over some large files.
If the USB port and docking cable are OK, the cause is more likely to be on the iPod (such as a dock connector that is worn out from use).

I recently tried downloading the IOS8 to my iPod 5th generation and when it was almost done the computer said there was an error. Right after that, the iPod shut down completely and now it's on recovery mode. I plugged it in and it said that I had to restore it and update it so I could use it again but it doesn't let me. What can I do? I even did a backup before the update.

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

OK, When you say "Charger" are you talking about the cable or the device that converts the 120 volt power from the wall to something that your iPod can handle? If you mean the cable, replace it, the green gunk is copper oxidation, corrosion. Moisture has gotten in the cable and is causing the cable to fail, replacement is the only thing that will work for certain. If within one year of purchase may be covered under warranty, you could get a free replacement from Apple. If it is just the tip of the cable wipe it off with a tissue and some alcohol. If your talking about the charging port on your iPod or the USB port on the other end, There are cleaning kits, you can purchase, which come with little brushes and pads and a cleaner solution to remove the corrosion. Just follow the instructions to the letter! Otherwise you can try this get bottle of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) 91% and several cotton swabs. You may need to cut / trim the swabs to fit the port openings. Turn your iPod and/or the charging device off. Apply 1 maybe 2 drops of alcohol to the swab, you want it damp, NOT wet! If you get it too wet use a tissue to dry the excess alcohol off the swab. Then insert the swab in and out as if you were plugging it in and out, do not sweep side to side, you risk damaging the contact pins inside the port. Bend or break one and you'll have a real and expensive mess. after 4 or 5 in / out motions, varying the position of the swab from right to left, change swabs, dampen a fresh swab and continue until the swab come out clean. Or take it to Apple or an electronics service shop and let them clean it. When done allow the port to dry a few minutes before turning your iPod on. Good luck, Cheers.

Most common culprits include the cable. Try swapping it out for a different one.. or not having the most recent version of itunes. I once even solved this problem by shutting down the computer for 2 minutes. (the longer the better), with the ipad plugged in. starting it up... then itunes recognizes it, launches, and syncs.

It will advise you to reboot. I recommend shutting down instead.

P.S The ipad should charge when asleep and plugged into your Mac. The charging behavior is normal. There isn't enough power out the USB ports to charge the ipad while it is on on some older Macs and nearly all PCs.

Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Try another cable
- Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, cracked or broken plastic.

1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.

IPod is charging and recognised by windows, but not recognised by iTunes.

There was an error message but stupidly I did not read it, and it won't come up again. I've tried restarting my laptop, re-installing iTunes, restarting my iPod and all sorts.
The reason (I think) it stopped working was because I was trying to copy music from my iPod to my iTunes, and windows was not recognising it, so a friend suggested deleting and re installing the driver, which was successful. But when I then went on to iTunes, it came up with the error message saying something about the iPod no longer working with iTunes or something, and now won't recognise the iPod no matter what I seem to try.
Is there anything I can do without deleting all the music and resetting the iPod? Because the whole reason I was trying to do this was to back up the music so I could update to ios 5.1 or whatever it is, without losing all my music which I don't have on iTunes as it's a new laptop.

IPod nano 7th gen not recognised in iTunes using Windows 8.1

I have an older 3rd generation iPod nano and a new 7th gen nano and I would like to sync them to the same iTunes on my Dell laptop (Inspiron 7520) running Win8.1. I have also updated iTunes to the latest version.
When I connect the new 7th gen iPod nano to my laptop via USB (tried all 4 ports) I get the following error message from iTunes:
"An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
I've been through most of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3218 and still get the error message although I haven't tried connecting the iPad nano 7th gen to an older Win7 laptop yet with a fresh iTunes install.
When connecting the iPod nano7 Win8.1 recognises E: as an iPod very briefly after I have run a scan via McAfee. After a few seconds the E: drive disappears and iTunes reports the error message as above. Sometimes, E: doesn't disappear in Win8.1 but I still get the iTunes error message and the iPod nano itself goes from Connected to Main menu.
Any ideas how I can get iTunes to recognise my 7th gen nano? I'm not sure if this is a Win8.1 problem or iTunes.

Interesting dilema. Charge icon displays when Ipod first connected, when updating, but as soon as it has finished does not show battery charge icon (lightning bolt)? Therefore I can only assume it is not. This is with battery showing 1/2 full. USB is hi-speed according to PC manufacturers info. Can anyone help?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

To restore your music, connect to your computer's iTunes and try the following settings.
Then hit the Apply button on bottom right. I find it best to select "sync only checked songs and videos" in the Options in Summary.

I bought my iPod Touch 5th generation about a year ago. And I updated to iOS 7 when it came out. I am currently on iOS 7.1.1. Earlier my iPod was at 4%. I plugged it in and checked ten minutes later. It was already at 100%. The iPod drains battery at a normal speed. I'm not complaining or anything. I just want to know why this is like this.

Some other uesers have reported the same. iOS 7 does charge the battery faster.

IPod rapidly loses charge when connected to USB 2.0

I just bought a new iPod photo 20g and a new powerbook 1.67 15". When I hook up the new iPod to the firewire it charges but doesn't mount. When I hook up the iPod with the USB cables it rapidly depletes the full charge in the iPod in about 20-30 minutes. Although the charge indicator shows a full charge ( the picture of the plug) as soon as you unplug it is shows a low charge.
I tried several cables, and they all do the same. I tried another powerbook and it acts the same way.
If I hook it up to a PC via firewire I can format it for the PC and it charges and reads fine. But when hooked up to the USB is also shows a full charge but once you unplug it, it shows you its true charge which is empty or close to.
Are the charging curcuits different for Firewire and USB? It should like I have a bad iPod. Any thoughts................
