hi Liza!
hmmmm. are you getting a blue screen? if so, what error number and message are you getting? here's a reference:
http://kadaitcha.cx/stop_err.html
if you aren't seeing a blue screen during the shutdown, try changing the setting described here:
Jonathan Wildstrom, "Computer Restarts while Installing iTunes Update" #8, 04:19pm Aug 23, 2005
(i'm asking, because there's three common reasons for a bluescreen reason under these circumstances: a bad dock or PC internal-USB problem, old roxio software, or antivirus software problems. the blue screen message might help us narrow in on the problem.)

  • IPOD hates my computer!

I'm trying to set up on ipod for my mum. However it hates my computer!! On initial installation ipod crashed the computer, then after re-start everything uploaded ok - music etc. Next time I pluged the ipod into the PC it crashed windows. This has now happened every time I try and upload more music into the ipod. If I start the PC with the IPOD pluged in windows wont even start up - I just get a black screen - have to force re-boot. If I plug in post start up it recognises the IPOD then crashes, I can't open ITUNES/Control panel/anything to try and do the apple recommended "fixes" either.
Does anyone have any ideas on this??
I have tried seting the IPOD to disk mode and while I can work on the computer with it like this I can't eject the IPOD or open ITUNES!!
    Please help!!
    Cheers

    Hi.
Have experienced a similar problem. It's most likely that your USB 2.0 port is based on an ALI chipset. So, here's my success path:
    1. Purchase and install a USB 2.0 PCI card that uses a NEC chipset - such as BELKIN.
    2. Install drivers supplied with card
    3. Plug in IPOD and you should find a world of difference.
Depending upon the state of your IPOD, further recovery actions MAY be necessary as follows:
    1. Format IPOD at the control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disk management level; NTFS format will likely be the only file system possible (windows 2000 and XP).
    2. With your IPOD connected, re-install the IPOD setup software on your PC - downloadable from apple site.
    3. With IPOD still connected, accept all prompts to restart your computer - may happen as many as 2 times.
    4. With IPOD still connected, run the IPOD setup utility - found in IPOD folder at START menu - RESTORE IPOD to factory settings.
Once the IPOD is restored to factory settings, you should be in business. Again, my main problem was the ALI based USB card and associated drivers. Once I started using the NEC based card, all of the bad stuff went away.
    Hope this helps....

  • Why do i have to keep authorizing my ipod on my computer?

So everytime that I plug in my ipod touch into the computer it is a third generation 8 gb and it always says that it is not authorized but when I authorize it the pop up says that it is not authorized. Another problem that I amhaving is when I had to restore my ipod it erases all the songs that I had purchased recently on my ipod and my photos and videos and all of my apps are deleted as well. I would hate to rebuy my songs becasue when I search my songs on itunes it can not find it also when I hit sync my apps do not get redownloaded and my songs dont either. The reason why I pluged my ipod into my computer so my brothers can download it becuase I bought it on my ipod. Thats when the pop up came and it said to authorize it so i do so and then another pop up appears and it says to authorize. its the same cylce over and over. I called apple to ask this question and they told my to come here and ask this so if someone can help thast would be great.

    Hi Patrick,
I tried that last night, and unfortunately still had the same problem. I have now arranged to return the iPod in exchange for a replacement. Hopefully this was a one off! Thanks anyway.
I'd be interested to hear of any other advice in case it happens again when I receive my replacement!

  • My ipod hates me

so let me tell you the story of why I've come to the conclusion my iPod hates me.
I was listening to music and cleaning my turtle tank a few feet away when the music stopped. The computer made the disconnecting sound when an iPod is unplugged from the computer. About a minute later it made the connecting sound when you dock your iPod. I come to the computer and all my 3000+ songs, 35+ videos and pictures have been deleted. I thought it was a glitch so I unplugged my iPod and turned it off. But when I turned it back on, the songs were still gone. I was like oh well I'll just get all my songs again and re-upload them. But I re-docked it and a balloon popped up and it said some file was corrupt. I have no idea where this file is. Now everytime I dock my iPod I have to go through the registering process of when you first dock your iPod. And everytime I upload songs, they don't stay on the iPod.
so someone please tell me what the "h-e-double hockey sticks" happened and what is wrong with my iPod

    couple more things
it still says I'm using 22 gigs on it. but I found that only the pictures remained. so are my files hidden or something?
and I had it plugged into my car with one of those ipod car connectors so I can listen to it when I'm driving. and it had been plugged in there all night. when I went and got it this morning, it said there was no battery power left. but the connector charges the iPod. is there something wrong with my iPod or is everything else screwy?

  • Want to transfer songs from Ipod to new computer

I want to transfer my songs from my Ipod to another computer but Itunes on the new computer wants to erase my Ipod first. How do I do this? I hate the idea of all my songs being on just one computer. What if the thing starts smoking. I'd hate to have to re-collect over 1000 songs.

  • THERE IS NO SOLUTION TO MULTIPLE iPODS ON ONE COMPUTER!

    Hello,
This is a very common problem for those of us who belived that iPods were easy to connect to computers. The first iPod was, so why can't I just connect another?
Well...you can. It just takes HOURS. Last night, I spent over 4 hours trying to get my windows computer to recognize both my mini and my sister's nano. Apple claims that using two iPods on one computer is "easy." It is, you just have to go through the grueling process of connecting them both first!
Maybe there is a faster way than I know about, but I have probably read EVERY POST about "How to connect 2 iPods to the same computer." I even called Apple and they GAVE UP on me! They told me it was a hardware problem and I should send my iPod in for repair.
What Apple needs to realize, is the fact that most people are NOT trying to steal music. All of the crazy restrictions that Apple has placed on iTunes (1 download per song, can't burn videos to dvd, can't play other music software on iPods...) are just to make sure no one steals $0.99 from Apple? WHAT?!?
My suggestion to Apple is that you make a new version of iTunes where a user can register MANY iPods to a single computer, and let them all be on at the same time. The way Apple has it now, only one iPod can be connected at a time. This is, of course, to insure that no one steals music.
The easy solution is to throuw out your Windows computer and buy a Mac. Or just one iPod.
I hope that this clears up any confusion you were having about your own iPods. I'm sorry if you aren't technically savvy and won't be able to figure out how to connect your two iPods, it literally took me hours.
    Sincerely,
    iRock my iLife

Just blow itunes out and use RealPlayer. Just as easy to load from CD type playlists but not sure about downloads from web - yet. Had to do this as Itunes took out my CD and DVD drives in one go and couldnt have both. Cost me a fortune to get pc unstuck and windows completely re installed and guess what? Went to load Itunes again and there went the drives. Gave up and using RealPlayer now.

  • Multiple iPods on one computer question

    Hello,
I know this question has been asked already and I've read all the help topics about multiple iPods.
I've tried twice to use two iPods on one computer and it was not as easy as described. I'm just wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
The first time I tried was on a PC running XP with two iPod minis. I had seperate user accounts and it kept erasing all the songs in one account.
The other situation was on a different PC running XP Pro with a shuffle and a 30gig photo.
I had my 30gig for about a year and as soon as I plugged in my shuffle it didn't recognize it and the next time I plugged in my 30 gig photo it froze and I had to end up doing the hard reset for it.
Tomorrow I am about to try a PC running XP with a shuffle, nano, and a video iPod.
I've read the two ways to do it and am going to try the specific playlist option.
I'm worried that as soon as I plug in the second iPod it will freeze and I won't be able to even get to the "iPod Option" Button in iTunes.
The computer is not mine nor are the music devices. I'm doing it for a friend who doesn't understand computers that well. All devices are new, never used.
Is it as easy as the process sounds?
Also the last time I tried multiple iPods was at least two iTunes updates ago.
    Thanks for any help,
    Chris

    Hello!
Let me explain this in detail for you:
    The Do Not Disconnect screen
It is normal for your iPod to say this message to you when you connect it to your computer.
When you need to disconnect it from your computer, you'll first need to eject it.
There are a few ways to eject your iPod; through iTunes, the Safely Remove Hardware program, and "My Computer".
    Through iTunes
Ejecting your iPod via iTunes depends on what setting your iPod is on for.
Connect your iPod. Go into Edit> preferences> iPod. See what setting your iPod is on; "automatic" or "manual".
    Automatic
If you aren't restoring, or updating your iPod, iTunes should automatically eject your iPod from iTunes. If it doesn't, then right-click the name of your iPod in iTunes, and make sure that the "enable for disk use" is un-checked.
    Manual
If you need to eject your iPod from iTunes if the setting is "manual", click the little arrow that's next to the name of your iPod in the left source list in iTunes.
Through the "Safely Remove Hardware" program
Look at the bottom-right corner of your screen, and there's the system tray icons there. If the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is there, click on it, select your iPod, and click "stop".
    Through "My Computer"
    Go to "My Computer".
Find your iPod's listing there (it's typically "E:" or "F:").
    Right-click it, click on "eject".
For additional information about ejecting your iPod, check this Apple Support articles about it.

  • How can I use two Ipods on one computer.

I was wondering if it is possible to use 2 Ipods on one computer without having to reload all of the music to the new library.

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually
If the iPods belong to different users then there are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Another option when using a single library is to set any or all of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • Help! syncing multiple ipods on same computer!

i will soon have two different ipods syncing to the same computer. how can i keep libraries separate so that my brother's music doesn't show up on my ipod and my music doesn't get synced to his?
    iPod Video 30GB   Windows XP

There are basically two methods for managing multiple iPods on one computer. See here:
Method 1 - Create different Windows users accounts for each iPod on this computer.
Method 2 - Create a playlist in iTunes for each iPod.
To make Method 2 work, connect one of your iPods, and click on it in the left-source panel.
Under the "Music" tab, and set your option for a specific playlist(s) under the "Sync Music" option.
Do the same with your other iPod; not connected at the same time as the other one, though.
For more details on this matter, check out Apple's Support article about it:

    I hope that helps you.

  • Multiple ipods on same computer?

Is it possible to download music onto two separate ipods using the same computer? I don't mean at the same time.
I want to get an ipod for myself, but would like to be able to download my CD's and not have to have my wife's songs/CD's on my ipod.
I'm not sure this explains what I want to do, but I'll use it as a departure point.
I appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks.

  • I need to put photos from my iPod to my computer

My daughter's iPod touch has this very large block of "other" taking up more than 2gb of space of her device. I've exhausted all options and now we can't seem to get it to sync to wifi properly anymore. I want to do a complete reset on her iPod. Restore completely to factory settings. Erase it all. HOWEVER, we have some very special pictures on it of family members that are no longer with us, and I need to get them OFF the iPod before I can just delete everything. I can't figure out how. I've synced it. I've tried to search for it. I just cannot find the pictures anywhere on my computer. And I cannot figure out how to even view them. I even ran a back up from the iPod to my computer and I can't even find the file that happens to. And my cloud doesn't show the pictures either.
    help!!!! please?

If they were taken by or saved to the iPod then:

If they were synced to the iPod then you need a third-party computer program like TouchCopy or PhoneView

My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC.  When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized.  The Device Manager lists it as an Unknown Device.  I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, but it had no affect.  The odd thing is that our other iPod (160 GB Classic) is recognized on the same computer using the same USB cable.  When I plug the ipod in question into another PC, the PC seems to recognize the iPod and lists it in Windows Explorer (iTunes is not installed on this machine).  There seems to be something out of wack with this PC/iPod combo.  Any thoughts on what I can do to try to resolve this issue?  I tried all of the steps listed here, but they didn't help me.  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

  • Old hard drive damaged; how to upload from iPod to new computer

The hard drive on my old computer was damaged. I had not backed up all of my iTunes library to either a DVD or external drive. My iPod classic has about 6,300 songs. I just purchased a new computer. Is it possible to upload all of the songs on my iPod to the new iTunes library on the new computer? I assume I will get a message telling me that the computer is not authorized. I am not all that tech savvy, so I don't want to hit "sync" and lose all my non-Apple purchased music. Thanks.

Hey there again, here's another answer.
Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
    More information is contained here.
