My ipod shuffle 2 gen don't want to make volume down.

Everything works alright but when I press button to volume down my ipod volume up instead, and
there is no way to volume it down.
What can I do with it ?

Your next and only remaining option is to connect the Shuffle to your computer and perform a restore of it via iTunes.  This process wipes all content from the iPod, resets all settings back to their defaults, and reloads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.  See here for instructions on restoring the Shuffle.
Restoring iPod shuffle to factory settings
If a restore doesn't help, it rules out the probability of it being software related, meaning it's a hardware problem.  Your only option at this point is to either take or send your iPod in for service or replacement.

  • My ipod shuffle (4th gen) don't works after hard reset with itunes

My ipod shuffle (4th gen) don't works after hard reset with itunes, it don't reads too like USB by Windows.
Before that i've seen error (-50) in iTunes, so i reset ipod.
I've read all tips on this site, but nothing helps me.

No, USB works good. I've tried reset on my friend's PC, and it saw my ipod and reset was done. But when i tried to load music, it wrote me, that i've installed incorrect software.

  • Why does my ipod shuffle when I don't want it to?

When I play a playlist, my iPod nano sometimes shuffles songs even when I try to play songs in order.  How can I stop this from happening?

Go to the now playing window. Then deselect the shuffle icon

  • Brand New Ipod Shuffle 4th Gen Buttons Don't Work?

I just bought my mum an Ipod Shuffle 4th Gen for Mother's day. I just set it up on the computer, ripped some of her CDs onto iTunes, let the iPod charge a little and synced it up with her songs.
Turned it on, music started - then I pressed the 'next song button'. Nothing happened. Held it for a while to see if it would fast forward. Nope! Tried skip back, tried volume increase/decrease... none of them work. It's only the buttons in the white circle that don't work, everything else seems to be fine. I tried holding the play button to see if the buttons had been locked, but whenever I lock/unlock the buttons it always flashes orange as if they're permanently locked.
I reset the iPod - no luck there. I then went into iTunes and did a factory restore - but the problem persists. We don't have an iTunes store anywhere near us (I'd have just popped in there with it) and I really don't want to have to go down the route of sending it off for a replacement/refund if possible, as this is a gift and I expected it to work out of the box. Is there anything I might be missing, any hints or tips, or does this definitely seem like a hardware issue? At the moment I'm just letting it charge fully before I try again, though I'm not sure that will help.

  • How to Play Overdrive Media Books on an iPod Shuffle 4th Gen

    Hi,
Many libraries use Overdrive Media to manage audio books in various formats.  Once you have downloaded the book to the Overdrive Media Console on your computer, you can then choose to transfer it to a device (such as an iPod or other mp3 player).  When transferring WMA files with an iPod shuffle 4th Gen (I'm not sure about other gens) this creates a number of files with bizzare titles.  When you go to the book section on the iPod it will play the first section and then it will just continually loop and you never go on to the next section.  After working with this for a while I've figured out how to make this work.  This is not what I consider a satisfactory solution but more of a work-around.  I hope that Apple will produce a fix that will remedy this situation as a lot of people download audio books from the library.
    1.  When you transfer WMA audiobook content to your iPod, Overdrive Media does it via iTunes.  I believe it usese iTunes to perform a file conversion.  Once the conversion is complete, it transfers the converted file to your shuffle.  If you watch this occur, you will notice that while it is converting the file, it assigns it a strange number like 10347.  As each part of the book is transferred, write down its number.  You have to catch it during the conversion as once the part is converted it reverts to its title (something like "Where the Red Fern Grows Part 01").  But that title is never transferred to the iPod.  It retains the strange number.
    2.  You will notice that as each file is converted, the number goes up.  So as you write them down, they will look like 10347, 11671, 12003, 12865... etc.  I have no idea what these numbers mean but they become your section titles on the audio when the Voiceover button is pressed.  One other thing, sometimes the numbers restart like so:  18567, 19325, 345, 907... Again, not sure why but you must keep the order they were converted and transferred as this is the order in which you'll want to play them back.
    3.  Now you will have a list of numbers indicating the different parts of the book.  Turn on your iPod and use the Skip Forward button to until you hear the book start.  Listen to the fist section until you hear it start to repeat.  There will be no pause or anything so sometimes it is hard to pick up where the part ended.  Once the part has ended, hold the Voiceover button and listen to the strange number.  Next press the Skip Back button and listen to the other strange numbers which will be in order, last-to-first.  When you get to the number indicating the next part, press the Play button and you will now be on the next part.
NOTE: if you press the play button on the wrong part (strange number), it will shuffle that part to the end of the playlist.  But if you have the part numbers written down in order this won't be a problem.  Also, if you hit the forward skip or backwards skip while playing a part, it will skip to some place in that part.  You can get back to your original spot by skipping again a few times more in the same direction.
    EXAMPLE:
Let's say you are transferring a 4 part book to the iPod.  During this transfer you note the strange numbers during conversion like so:
    Part 1 = 11278
    Part 2 = 11942
    Part 3 = 12512
    Part 4 = 13398
Now your book is on the Shuffle.  Turn on the Shuffle and listen for the start of the book.  If it is playing something else like music or a podcast, press the Skip Forward button until you hear the audiobook begin.  This is usually accompanied by music and has the title of the book, etc.  At this point you can press and hold the Voiceover button and you will hear "11278" pronounced.  Release the Voiceover button and let this part of the book play to the end.
You will then at some point hear that part of the book start over.  Press and hold the Voiceover button and start using the Skip Back button.  You will hear in this order: "11278, 13398, 12512, 11942".  When you hear "11942" press the Play button and Part 2 of the book will begin.  Continue this process for each part until you reach the end of the book.
I've listened to several books using this method and it has worked fine.  It is sort of fiddly and you have to do some things that I think iTunes or the Shuffle should do but until Apple does something about this, it is the only way that it will work that I've been able to find.

It sounds like the Windows Media security update in Para x, below, may not have been done and your music setting may have been on Repeat.  As a review, here is a list of steps that may help clear the problems up.
Many libraries worldwide now use Overdrive Media Console, which comes in Mac an Windows versions http://www.overdrive.com/Software/omc .  Some find the mobile device transfer process confusing.  To load or delete a WMA or MP3 (Macs can only download MP3 books) audiobook onto an Apple mobile device see the "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" video in the guides at Step 7, then do the following.
    1. For Windows versions, you must first do a security update of Windows Media Player (even though you won't be using it) using Internet Explorer at http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite .
    2.  Open iTunes, plug the mobile device into the computer USB port and open the Overdrive Media Console.
    3. Highlight the mobile device in the left hand menu of iTunes and insure the "Manually manage music and videos" box is checked in the Summary Tab. If the mobile device storage is full, transfering will delete that portion of music necessary for the ebook.
    4. Highlight the book you want to transfer in the Overdrive Media Console and click the Transfer Button.   A window opens permitting you to click the boxes for parts of the book you wish to transfer.
    5. After the book has been transfered, when you click the disclosure triangle (arrow) to the left of the iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes, MP3 books will show up under the Music subsection and WMA books will show up in the Books subsection.  Once the mobile device is disconnected from iTunes, MP3 books will show up in the Songs list of the mobile device and WMA books will show up in the Books list.
    6. To remove a book from a mobile device plug the device into the USB port and open iTunes. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes so that you can see the device’s subcontents. For an MP3 book select the Music subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.  For a WMA book, select the Book subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.
    7. The Overdrive Media Console Guided Tour (videos) is at http://www.overdrive.com/Solutions/Libraries/tour/MenuWelcome.html .  The "Portable Devices" and "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" videos are there.
    8. To find a nearby library for ebooks search http://search.overdrive.com .  You can download the software, search for books and see tutorials without an account at the website of any library that uses Overdrive, however, you need a library card to download books.  At this library site, for example, the software and guided tour are at the bottom of the left hand menu.

  • IPod shuffle 4th Gen. How to start playing podcast from the very beginning once again?

Hello to everybody in this forum,
I bought a new iPod shuffle 4th Gen music player for about two weeks ago. I love this device, it works great as well as it's sound quality amazes me after Windows Mobile 6.0 Phone, Transcend MP3 and even Samsung Galaxy Ace devices use experience. It's much better and it made me got used to podcasts feature I never tried before, But if I want to replay the very same podcast item from the very beginning - I simply don't know how to rewind it back. If I press next/prev buttons it doesn't help. The podcast itself starts to play at about 5 minutes before a podcast's end as if I were listened to the whole podcast continuously from the beginning of a podcast. A podcast appears to be divided into chapters and I don't understand how to switch chaprers. Even if I did, the amount of chapters is big and it's inconvenient to swith every chapter with prev button pressed. Shuffle's manual tells me nothing on how to get things work I want it to. Any help is appreciated.
    Best regards, Alexander Chernyaev.

  • Ipod Shuffle 3rd gen is working great and is perfect for my needs

I just wanted to post that my iPod Shuffle 3rd gen is working great. No problems and I love it. I use it mainly for listening to podcasts. As soon as I turn it on it begins on the podcast I last listened to --where I was in the middle of the podcast. I stick the Shuffle in my pocket and all I ever have to do is use the headphone controls to pause, move forward or backward in the podcast, skip to the next one, or go back to the beginning, etc. I also love to be able to use the volume control on the headset without having to fumble around for my Shuffle in my pocket where it is safely tucked and won't get knocked off or damaged. I listen to my Shuffle for a few hours a day when doing yard work, household tasks and driving back and forth to work.
All the features are working just the way they are supposed to on my Shuffle. There are a bunch of negative posts about the Shuffle and I just wanted to say that mine works great and I enjoy it very much. I have had the Shuffle for 4 weeks and have not had any problems whatsoever. I own several other models of iPods (first version Mini, Video 60gb, Nano 1 & 2, Shuffle 1,2,& 3, Touch) But the handsfree/visual free ability of this 3rd gen Shuffle is great and very useful for me.
    Just my two cents.

    Linda,
No I just use one earbud in my ear. I put the earbud in my right ear--away from the window side and it is also the one with the in-line controls, so that works great. I don't put it on very loud either.
If I am not listening to a podcast and just want to hear music I sometimes will plug it into a line-in cable, but then I don't have a choice on what I am listening to. It's not a real problem because I like all the songs I have on it anyway. I can still adjust the volume on the car stereo, so that is the way I do it.
I am watching closely for any accessories that might allow a headphone splitter to work, but nothing so far. I am sure we will see some useful additions in the near future. And by the way, the earbuds that came with it work great in my ears--never fall out and are comfortable to me.

  • Windows vista, Ipod shuffle 4th gen.  Computer cannot find device driver software for ipod.

After several hours trying the troubleshooting options provided by the apple support site, I have come to what I think is the issue here.  My girlfriend recently got an ipod shuffle and when plugging it into her computer the dialog pops up saying it is installing device driver software for the ipod.  Eventually it asks me to insert the CD that came with the ipod.  No CD came with the ipod, so I click the option that says "I do not have my cd".  Then it gives me the option of searching automatically or manually for the driver software.  The automatic way can't find it.  Doing it manually, with the help of the troubleshooting page, didn't work either.  google search can't seem to help me on this one.  Also, I tried plugging the ipod into my computer (not hers) and it worked fine, it was able to install the device driver software on its own.  Does anybody know the issue here?  My computer has windows 7, and hers has vista.  Hers is Serice Pack 1.  When I tried installing service pack 2 it wouldnt work.  I don't know if that is the issue though.  I have tried just about everything, I think the issue is finding the device driver software.  When I do a google search nothing comes up, so I have no idea what to do at this point.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Well its surprising to know that! But even  have an ipod shuffle 3rd gen n dint face any problem like that. FYI no cd comes with the ipod jus take ur ipod to an apple exoert n he will solve ur problem .

    Hello there baku_k,
It sounds like your iPod shuffle just isn't being seen in iTunes no matter what you do on your PC running Windows 8. Without knowing the exact troubleshooting you have done, I would recommend that you look over the troubleshooting steps in the following article to help you determine what may be happening, named:

  • My ipod shuffle (2nd gen) doesn't appear to be charging anymore

my ipod shuffle (2nd gen) doesn't appear to be charging anymore. Have tried different usb ports, etc.  The computer does not recognize it as being plugged in.

I just had that same problem. I also have my iPod touch but i also want to use this for many other reasons... SOMEBODY HELP!!!

  • Ipod shuffle 4th gen charges plays but doesnt show up in windows or itunes

Ipod shuffle 4th gen charges plays but doesnt show up in windows or itunes tried to check usb driver but computer says it is working properly

Just disconnecting it without ejecting should not cause permanent damage.  It may cause data corruption, if iTunes was in the process of syncing at the time.  But iTunes should still see the shuffle and (maybe) tell you to Restore it.
Is it possible that the "accident" damaged the USB cable?
Make sure you have done this on the shuffle since the problem occurred
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
And you should also shut down (power off) the computer, if you have not already.
Have you tried more than one USB port on the computer (not a hub if you use one)?  You can also try it with all other USB devices disconnected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).
If those things do not help, what version of Windows do you use?

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd Gen overrides my playlist order

Goal: copy 8 (or whatever number) podcasts onto my iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen (silver, 1 Gig), in a specific order.
What actually happens: everything looks good, but when I eject the iPod and listen to the tracks, or when I reconnect the iPod, the tracks have been rearranged into a different specific order (it seems to be "album order" - that is, when I click on the Album Order column, the sort doesn't change).
The iPod's shuffle button is not in shuffle mode, nor is the shuffle button in iTunes. I've completely Reset the iPod using the latest update of iPod reset utility. I've tried copying songs onto the pod one at a time, or a whole bunch at a time, or using Autofill. With each method, I am able to copy all of the tracks onto the iPod, and have them show up in the right order. Inevitably, when I listen to them, or reconnect the iPod, they're back in the same wrong order that the iPod seems to prefer.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob Strong

Ok, my update: I figured out how to name every podcast in the Sort Name field, as suggested. I was able to enter numbers in each field. Problem #1: I numbered them 1-49 (49 podcasts). But, the field sorts all the 1s, then all the 2s, etc. So, I had to renumber 1-19 as 1-10, then 101, 102, etc. That solved that problem. In future, I will try 01, 02, etc.
And so, in my podcast playlist, they were organized in the order I wanted them, sorted on the Sort Name column by my numbers. Good. Then I tranferred them to the iPod. I also have music on the iPod, so the podcasts all appeared at the end of my list - #72 and on. I like putting them at the top of the list, so I know where they are and can find them, I dragged the whole 49 up to the top of the list. Everything looked fine.
But, just as Robert reports and as I have experienced over and over again, when I went to listen to the iPod, THE ORDER WAS REJIGGED AGAIN, according to whatever order it is that the iPod likes! (But only the podcasts were re-ordered, within themselves; the music files still started after podcast #49.)
    Can anyone help?

  • Ipod Shuffle 2nd Gen won't turn on

    Hey,
Just recently found my mom's unused Ipod Shuffle 2nd Gen, sealed, not opened and still in the box. So i wanted to check it out see if it works, it connected to the computer just fine, put all the music on, charged fully and the green light was on while it was connected to the computer, the problem is as soon as i unplugged the ipod from the computer it wont respond the the on and off switch, its suppose to give out a green light when its on right? i dont see any.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is here?
    Thanks

Lithium-ion batteries, if left in a completely discharged state for an extended period, can become unable to hold a charge.  That 2nd gen shuffle has been sitting in its unopened box for about five or six years.  If that's the case here, it  operates fine while getting power from the USB port, and appears to charge, but it is unable to hold that charge when disconnected from power.  Therefore, nothing happens when you move the power switch.  Here is a document from Apple about batteries
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html
    (see Long Term Storage section)
You can try doing a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes, in case the problem is related to software.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Settings screen, when it is selected in iTunes.

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd gen and Mac problem/troubleshooting guide

Ok, warning this is going to be a little long...
The problem: Brand spanking new out of the box ipod shuffle 2nd gen won't play songs after ipod assistant setup. Flashing green/orange lights. Also will not update or restore (greyed out). Shows up as formatted for Windows. Software and Serial show up as "n/a".
    System specs: Powerbook G4 17inch 1ghz, 1gb RAM, 10.4.9 running iTunes 7.1.1
Attempted solutions that have NOT worked:
    1) mac retail store visit to genius bar. it restored on mactel machine. worked and played songs. unfortunately resyncing to my library caused ipod to return to problems above immediately.
    2) another mac retail store visit to genius bar, this time with laptop to show them the problem. they told me it was my machine not the shuffle. i explained i am a mac sys admin and that is ridiculous...my machine though a few years old is completely up to date. we then deleted all receipts out of the Library dealing with iTunes and reinstalled iTunes via software update. same problem immediately after the setup assistant. no software version and no choice to update or restore ipod. downloaded the ipod reset utility for mac for 2nd gen shuffle and error message shows "the selected ipod is not supported by this utility". also shuffle icon shows up as generic white ipod. mac genius stumped so they swap out my brand new shuffle for another brand new shuffle.
    3) 2nd shuffle in a week and same problems occur. will not update in iTunes. will not restore in iTunes. will not restore in ipod reset utility. icon shows generic white ipod. i can copy music to it but it will not play, lights flash green and orange.
    4) tried to use disk utility to reformat. erase using MS-DOS, but it says FAT16 instead of FAT32. same problems as above.
*weird that I can't reformat to FAT32 when selecting the MS-DOS format. I only see FAT16 as a choice. Disk utility should do FAT32 but I can't seem to get it to work on shuffle and i don't have a spare hard drive to test it on. Anyone have any experience reformatting ipods via Disk Utility to windows format? Please share...
At this point I have access to a mactel book and will attempt to fix it on the newer machine. I will be very upset if it works because there is nothing saying that you need new hardware to use the new shuffle. i also get the usb 1.1 error message but again there is nothing saying you need usb 2.0 for shuffle use.
if anyone has tried anything different with good results please respond! from my experience this seems to be an issue specifically between older mac ppc machines and the new windows drivers installed on the shuffle. i use windows drives all the time with my mac and there are no problems. however a brand new ipod shuffle 2nd gen out of the box does not seem to like my older machine...even after two reinstalls of itunes! even the reset utility is not working as described....
any help with this is much appreciated!!!
    Powerbook G4, 1ghz, 1gb RAM, usb 1.1, 17inch Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Ok here it is, my final post on thoughts on this issue...
Unfortunately, my guess was correct, there does seem to be a hardware issue related to iTunes 7.1.1 and whether it is on a mactel machine or an older ppc machine.
I can confirm this because the ipod settings screen on my older PPC powerbook is TOTALLY different than the screen I saw on the newer mactel macbooks, even though the software version says its EXACTLY THE SAME! (iTunes 7.1.1)
On a mactel macbook, I see the ipod shuffle settings such as "Autofill" etc with the correct icon and software version and serial number.
On my PPC powerbook, I see a generic white ipod icon (even though the finder shows the correct icon of my 2nd gen shuffle) and the settings tab for the ipod is completely different....the update and restore continued to be grayed out, there is no software version or serial number available as well. This is probably why I am not able to register my ipod shuffle from my machine.
I did not erase and resync the ipod shuffle to my PPC machine to see if that would allow it to continue working. So far so good. After unmounting, it still plays songs. However, I checked the "manage songs manually" option and added just one more song to the shuffle. I tried to then play that song but it would not play even though it was copied onto the shuffle...I could play it from the ipod via iTunes but not when I was just listening to the shuffle. I confirmed this with the application "PodWorks", the song I copied from my library does NOT show up in the list of songs on my ipod shuffle...however it DOES show up and play in iTunes.
So I feel pretty stuck right now...
I can have a working ipod shuffle but NOT from my ipod library. It seems I can only listen to songs off my friends newer machines because for whatever reason, the ipod shuffle DOES NOT WORK with a PPC Powerbook 17inch, 1ghz, 1gb RAM, 10.4.9 running the current latest version of iTunes 7.1.1.
***** to be me. Anyone else come to same conclusion?
If this is real then other users with older macs should not waste their money on the 2nd generation ipod shuffle. Please respond if you have any suggestions or thoughts on this matter.
