My itunes is empty, but all of the music is still on my computer...

my roommate updated my itunes and suddenly all of my music was erased from the program. it's still on the computer, but everytime i try to import it into the new itunes, it duplicates the music and ends up using twice the hard drive space -- which i don't have. is there a way to just move the music w/o making copies of it on my computer (where it's already located)?
also, if this was already answered, i apologize. i searched for about an hour and haven't found the same problem.

Verify that the 'iTunes Music folder location' (Preferences>Advanced>General) is set to the folder containing your music (the default location is /Users/Username/Muisc/iTunes/iTunes Music).
Then drag and drop that folder (usually 'iTunes Music') on the Library window in iTunes.
iTunes will add all music in the 'iTunes Music' folder to the library and should not create duplicates this time.
Hope this helps.

  • HT204406 I just downloaded music from Itunes Store but all of the music did not download.

I just downloaded music from Itunes Store but all of the music did not completely download.

You could try emailing iTunes support, giving them your order number, etc. or you could just take the hit and pay the 99p.  I know what I would do.

  • I updated my ipod on my computer to the ios 5 and it updated but all of the music, movies, and apps were cleared off. I cannot put any of it back on please help! :(

I updated my ipod on my computer to the ios 5.1.1 and it updated but all of the music, movies, and apps were cleared off. I cannot put any of it back on please help!

Go to iTunea>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backupright at the time you did the update. Then try restoring from that backup. If the apps are in your iTunes library, any app data will be restored to the iPod.
When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode). iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups.
Therefore, remembe the passcode that you enter this time.
It appears that if you restore from a backup, that backup is not subseqyently overwritten by the next backup.

  • Is it possible to get iTunes to sync and match my iPhone? I recently bought a new Macbook and I transferred all of the music files on my old computer to the new one. I don't want all of the music files, only the ones also on my iPhone.

Basically I have a ton of music files in my iTunes library and included in all of those files are all of the music on my iPhone. I want iTunes to delete all of the songs in the library (and the song files on my computer) that are not on my iPhone.

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
When you change syncing computers you have to/should have done this:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities

  • After charging ipod says there is not music on ipod even though storgage useage indicated all of the music is still there

I recently charged/synched my 160 GB ipod classic - I may have disconnected it before it was ready.  Now the ipod says there is not music/playlists on the ipod - when I had used up over half the space previously.  I think the music is still on the ipod because it indicated something listed as "other" is taking up the same space the music used to take up.  How do I get the ipod to go back to recognizing the music?

Other is corrupt files, probably caused when you disconnected. Connect the iPod to iTunes and use the Restore button on the Device/Summary pane. This will remove everything and then re-load the iPod with the contents of your Library.

  • Itunes doesn't show all of the music on my ipod when I plug it in??

This all happened since I downloaded itunes 10.5 and ios 5:
itunes only shows some of the music on my ipod when I plug it in, (and click music on the left underneath 'Ellie's iPod' like normal), I've tried everything I can think of, and it's still only showing some songs, (always the same ones). also, if I edit an album cover or something in itunes, the change doesn't come up on my ipod either, so I can't edit songs in any way; it's driving me insane! I tried making a playlist on my ipod of all the songs that don't appear when I plug it in, and when it came up on itunes only one song was in it, and it wasn't even a song i'd put in the playlist.. (to make the playlist come up I synced my apps - when I checked the playlist on my ipod afterwards, this one song was there too).
My itunes library doesn't have the same songs as on my ipod, so I can't just sync that to my ipod as I'll lose a load of songs, (and gain some ones that I don't want), I don't know what to do; I tried repairing itunes, and i've tried all the basic things like restarting my computer etc. I haven't tried unistalling and reinstalling yet, but I'm a bit hesitant to do that.
If I go to the itunes store, the songs that I've purchased and that are appearing in itunes are greyed out like they should be, but the songs i've purchased that are on my ipod but aren't appearing in itunes are not greyed out, as if i haven't bought them, (yet they do show up in 'purchased' in the itunes store on my ipod..).
It's all very confusing and hard to explain, but long story short, not all the songs on my ipod are appearing in itunes when I plug my ipod in, and I can't edit the ones that do.

Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to the new one.

you will be able to download anything you have previously purchased for free
let me know if that works for you.

  • I recently had to restore my iPod Touch and all of my apps and music have been replaced on my iPod but all of the music has the cloud icon next to it saying I need to download it from the cloud. I have 1000  songs, how can I download all at once?

It's the 5th gen iPod touch and each song has the cloud symbol next to it that I can tap to download from the cloud onto my iPod but I don't want to have to do that for over 1000 songs so how can I do this all at once? I've already tried syncing my iPod with my library hoping that will help, as well as transferring purchases.

Nevermind I have resolved my problem.

  • ITunes won't sync all of my music to iPhone 4s

iTunes won't sync all of the music, it is skipping random songs, they still come up on the Music on the phone but cannot be played.. If anyone knows how to fix this please help.

Was this music purchased from iTunes or ripped? I have had problems in the past when I changed Apple IDs, and the content purchased through my previous account would not sync. If memory serves, I think it was an issue to do with the Mac not being authorised to access my old account. Signing in with my old account and authorising it resolved it. Not sure if this helps, but thought I would share.

  • How do I get all of the music on my computer to transfer to my Iphone?  For some reason, itunes has picked up some songs but not others.  example, I have several CD's loaded in which only 1 or 2 songs from the CD shows up in itunes.

I have about 70 Cd's loaded on my computer as I had previously owned another MP3 device before I got enamored with the Ipad and Iphone. My problem is itunes will not recognize all of this music.  To give a specific example, I have an old Bon Jovi Cd "crossroads" , itunes only recognizes 2 songs off the Cd.  How can I get itunes to recognize these songs?  They do not show up on itunes anywhere but if i go to my music folder I can locate the songs and it even shows the itunes logo but, the songs will not play with itunes.  I've got a few hours of music i would like to have on my iphone. Can anyone please help me with this?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything on the computer, then sync.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone to your computer - File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

Yes there is. Those songs are not actually on your iPad. They are in iCloud ready for download if you choose to do so. If you want to remove them go to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Show All>Music>Off. You can also do this in Settings>Music>Show All Music>Off.

  • When syncing my iTunes to my iPad from the laptop, I get a list of missing songs; they are in the library, but not in the music folder on my HD. In particular, I uploaded 3 CDs at the same time, all are in my library - but two are missing from the folder.

When syncing my iTunes to my iPad from the laptop, I get a list of missing songs; they are in the library, but not in the music folder on my HD. In particular, I uploaded 3 CDs at the same time, all are in my library, and all synced to the iPad - but the music from two of them are missing from the music folder. Questions are (a) where might they have gone? and (b) is there a way of "reverse loading" them back to my hard drive from the iPad? Thanks in advance!

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -
    Download past purchases
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia.

Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia. Can I start using itunes music match while I am travelling without the actual music files attached to my itunes?

In your situation I strongly recommend you read over that KB article. The international iTunes Stores are not cross-compatible.
My understanding of how it would work is that when activating iTunes Match on your US Store account, any songs you have in your iTunes Library that were purchased from the AUS Store account will NOT be matched. As I understand it, those files will be uploaded (which means you need the files on a local HDD). I also do not think it is possible to have iTunes Match active on more than one store ID on the same computer. But since iTunes Match is not available internationally yet, that point is moot for the moment.
To be honest you might want to wait until the service is available internationally so you can guage how will it will serve you.
