  • Windows and iTunes won't recognize my iPad outside of recovery mode

    Okay, so there's a lot.
    1) Unless I put the iPad into recovery mod, plugging in my iPad to my laptop gets no alert sound whatsoever, meaning it's not being recognized. The only thing that I DO get, is the iPad charging. However, there's more! My iPad sometimes appears like it's not even being plugged in, no charging, no recognition. But it's not my cable, I tried my brother's newer cable and the same thing happened. I plugged my cable into my wall charger and into a socket -- works perfectly.
    2) Sometimes, the iPad would get detected by Windows and install drivers, but iTunes still wouldn't pick it up or start automatically. I checked into the device manager and Devices and Printers, it was listed there and the status said it was working fine. I tried updating the drivers, it said the drivers were the best ones available. This is no longer happening however, due to further developments listed lower.
    3) I tried everything here: iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows and nothing works there. That includes uninstalling all iTunes/Apple related software in the specified order somewhere in the help sections, restarting the laptop, and then installing iTunes and restarting again. Didn't work.
    4) I tried stopping/starting the Apple Mobile Device process in Control Panel>Services. No effect.
    4) I tried the steps where you go into Common Files>apple>x>xdrivers and using the file there, but it would say it's incompatible or something to that effect. So that didn't work.
    5) I restored my iPad without iTunes. When I attempted to restore the iPad with iTunes, it gave me an error message (4005,I think), and said it could not be restored. Full stop. Thus why I wiped the iPad using the option in Settings>General on the iPad itself. But wiping it achieved nothing.
    6) I put my iPad back into recovery mode to get it recognized in iTunes and Windows again, where before I could get out of recovery mode, I can no longer do that and it appears to be stuck on that screen. Turning it off doesn't change that, because when I turn it back on, it goes directly back to the screen with the Cable + iTunes logo image.
    7)Note again, that being in recovery mode will *almost* always allow my laptop and iTunes to recognize the iPad. If I look into Devices and Printers now, it doesn't show up as iPad, it shows up as Apple Mobile USB Device Driver. in iTunes, it shows up as iPad and I get the notice "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery..."
    8) My iPhone works fine and can update, get immediately recognized, etc. So I'm also sure there's no problem with my USB ports in terms of being functional.
    Please help me. This has been really frustrating.

    You should use a USB port on the back of your computer when you connect. What other devices do you have connected to the USB chain (other than your keyboard and mouse)?
    You need to read this article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136 Even if no new driver is available for your computer, reload the USB Driver following the instructions in the article.
    Once your iPod can be seen in Device Manager in Windows, change the drive letter on the iPod to something higher (try M or P) and then reformat it (FAT32 format, don't do a quick format). After this Restore it in iTunes.

    Please help!!!!

  • Itunes won't recognize Ipod, shows in Windows Explorer

    Just got new iPod but it doesn't work. When plugged into computer via USB 2.0 port (4-slot PCI), there is pause and the following happens:
    1) Ipod screen says "Do not disconnect", flashes crossout icon.
    2) In the upper left of the iPod screen a twirling series of circular lines animates for a few seconds.
    3) iTunes freezes for a moment and then does nothing. When examining "preferences" interface, the Ipod tab says "No Ipod connected".
    4) Windows popup messages recognize "mass USB storage" device; shows up as "removable drive" in Windows file explorer.
    I have done everything recommended by this document to no avail:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
    What's next? Isn't there anyone I can call? I don't care if it costs something, I just want this to work...
    Thanks to anyone that can help...
    -Greg

    Shervin,
    You may be on to something with respect to the USB card. My computer has a USB 1.1 port and when I connected my iPod after loading the software and checking for updates my computer hung and I had to disconnect the iPod to restart the computer.
    When I re started a Windows balloon appeared saying the device could operate faster with a USB 2.0 port. Clicking on the balloon showed that the iPod was there, but when I tried to explore or go to My Computer the computer hung.
    I disconnected the iPod and re started the computer, this time starting iTunes before connecting the iPod - the application hung as soon as I connected the iPod and the ctrl/alt/del function showed that it was not responding.
    Thinking this was a computer hardware problem I tried the same procedure on my laptop with the same result.
    I finally fixed the problem as follows:
    (1) I deleted iTunes and the Updater from my laptop;
    (2) I re booted the iPod by holding the menu and select buttons for 6 seconds;
    (3) I down loaded a fresh copy of iTunes and Updater and rebooted my computer;
    (4)I connected the iPod and started the Updater program and clicked on "restore";
    (5)The application completed the restore and idled for several minutes after which a window appeared asking me to name my iPod (I hadn't seen this window during the initial install of the software on my desktop);
    (6) I checked in My Computer and found my iPod listed;
    (7) I ejected the iPod and started iTunes;
    (8) Under preferences, I changed the automatic update option to manual
    (9) I shut down iTunes and connected the iPod and waited;
    (10) The computer seemed to "hang" but I waited several minutes (3) and iTunes launched with my named iPod in the left column
    My iPod is now working normally. What do I think was wrong? I don't think the initial setup went smoothly. I should have removed my iTunes and Updater installs (from before I received my iPod) and started fresh. The USB 1.0 port is slowing things down, including recognizing my iPod and communicating with it (this is why iTunes is taking so long to launch and the computer appears to be hung), so I'm going to replace it with an Apple tested USB 2.0 PCI card.
    I believe that at some point the software on the iPod became corrupt (either from the factory or during the initial setup) because until I rebooted it manually, the computer couldn't "talk" to it. After the reboot, I was able to do a "restore" and then complete the installation and launch iTunes.
    I should say that when I moved the iPod back to my desktop, a message came up telling me that my iPod was assigned to another computer and did I want to change. This answers my question about connecting the iPod to more than one computer - not possible - but I should have been able to anticipate that.
    Sorry for the long post, but hopefully the above information will be helpful to those having difficulty getting their computer to recognize their iPod (or iTunes, for that matter).

  • ITunes won't recognize my iPod, however Windows does.

    When I connect my iPod sometimes iTunes opens like it should, however it just opens and no iPod appears to be connected. If I go to My Computer, the iPod is listed there, and it is fine, however if I try to browse one of the folders on it, Notes for example, it comes up with this error message: "G:\Notes is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." My aim is to be able to get iTunes to recognize it so I can do a restore. Any ideas?
    EDIT: I just tried plugging my iPod into my laptop which has iTunes on it, and it was still not recongnized by iTunes, however Windows did recognize it, and gave the same error message if I tried to browse any folders on it.
    SECOND EDIT: I have tried re installing iTunes with no luck. I was wondering, I were to right click my iPod in My Computer and select the format option, and format it that way, would it ruin my iPod? or would it format it leaving it the way it should be similar to a restore?

    I solved it myself, by running the windows disk checking utility on my iPod. This fixed the corrupted sectors of the drive, and it seems to be working fine now.

  • TS3716 I downloaded the new version of iTunes today and now iTunes won't recognize my iPod. Windows can see it but iTunes can't see it so it won't sync.

    Before the update was applied all was fine. I rebooted both the PC and the iPod with no success. I reinstalled iTunes and rebooted with no success. I tried different cables and different slots for the cable, none worked.

  • I deleted some Apple software, now iTunes won't recognize my iPod

    So earlier today I removed Bonjour, and the Apple Mobile Device from my computer. Now all of a sudden iTunes won't recognize my iPod, but windows does. Could this issue be related to removing the software from my computer?

    itunes won't recognize my iphone - running windows 8

    I found this under another post, it works(not stealing credit) just trying to help.  Re: Upgraded to iTunes 11.1 and now it won't recognize my iPhone Sep 18, 2013 2:15 PM (in response to davidsh_seattle) I was able to fix it!  iTunes can now see my iPhone5.    I followed these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538    And re-installed the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver".    •     Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.  •     Click "Browse my computer for driver software."  •     Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."  •     Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)  •     In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.  •     Use this window to navigate to the following folder:  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.  •     Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).  •     Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.  •     Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.   this worked to sync my iphone 5. not i4 or i3 phones(now ipods) In Device Manager I also noticed I had 3 apple drivers under Portable devices.  I deleted two of them. I updated the remaining driver, now I can sync my i5, i4 and i3.  You may have to View hidden devices.  Open device manager view-show hidden devices portable devices apple iphone "highlight" right click, update device if you have multiple apple iphone under portable devices, delete all but one.

  • TS3274 Original iPad won't charge, won't update and iTunes won't recognize

    I have one of the first generation iPads that won't charge unless it is completely drained of power.  Also if after it shuts off from 0% power ifr any reason it gets turned back on while plugged in, it stops charging and won't continue to charge until the device is completely drained again. Also iTunes won't recognize the device AND it is operating under iOS 5.1.1 and says the software is up to date and won't update at all.  I have tried different plugs, different computers, nothing works.  Is my iPad just too old?

    The failure to update isn't an issue. The iPad one is maxed out at 5.1.1.
    The other issues may be an issue with the battery, or charging port or software inside. You may want to make an appointment to get it checked out, but even if what's broken is a manufacturer's defect you're outside of any warranty so the most you'll get is the offer of an out of warranty replacement for a fee. might ultimately be cheaper to put that money towards a new device.
    Have you tried to give your iPad a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and see if that helps.
