My mac is running slowly

and Disk Utility returns a message of "
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired."
What does this mean and how do I fix it?
Many thanks.

Ignore the message. Details in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448. BTW. that has nothing to do with a slow machine.

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

My Mac is running slowly and having some gliches when opening programs.  How can I clean up the disk to make it more efficient?

Don't do anything until you can restore and have repaired the disk drive.
Post should get moved to either ML (10.8,.4) or iMac forum
Swap out the hdd for an SSD : )
Don't do anything to clean it up unless you don't know how to first remove browser history from within the programs; low on disk space (I consider more than even the 15% minimum, more like 3--40%)
And do you have page outs? more than enough RAM? what actually leads you to ask? Programs aren't opening properly?
Sometimes it is easier to take the long road: just reinstall and restore.

  • Mac is running slowly

My iBook G4 on OS X Tiger has begun to run slowly. The CPU jumps from around 10% usage to up to 98%. Programs all run slowly, the Internet browser freezes and takes a long time to load pages, and I cannot run an Internet browswer and say MS Word at the same time or they are unbearably slow. I don't know what to do to fix this.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Did you repair permissions after the 10.4.8 upgrade?
When was the last time you performed system maintenance on the machine. System maintenance ought to be performed at least once a month. If it is sporadically done, a small problem can cascade over time into a large problem.
For regular maintenance (about twice a month) I use OnyX.
If you don't have a copy, ,make sure you download the version specific to Tiger.
In OnyX, you'll use the automation panel selecting:
    Optimization - full;
    Maintenance scripts,
Cache's - clear "system" and "user".
Ordinarily you wouldn't clear the cache's, however, given the problem you describe, I think it would be best done now.
Restart the computer once OnyX is finished (do not use the computer while it's running). On the restart, repair permissions via Disk Utility in your Utility folder. One last thing, the restart will take a little longer since the cache's are cleared.
If the above doesn't speed up the computer, post back. You may need to check the HD for corruption.

  • Why do some old Mac programs run slowly in Classic mode?

I successfully installed OS 9 Classic Mode on an eMac.  At first, some of my old programs (Thinkin' Things, Millie's Math House, both edmark) ran fine, but as time went on they started jerking and freezing as they ran.  I re-started and it continued to do the same thing.  Any ideas on why these programs run slowly like this?

I gathered the info you suggested in previous message, but I was wondering if you could help me interpret it.
    Here's what I got:
In Activity Monitor; System Memory; Page ins/outs = 12277/0.
Memory is listed as 1.024 MB, with 822.11 MB free.
I looked under CPU tab in Activity Monitor and did not exactly now what I was looking for.  What should I do with the CPU #'s?
I opened Console in Utilities & there were any clues or repeating messages.
The 40 MB hard drive has 9 MB free.
I ran the 9.2 CD-based educ. software again.  Some does not boot up.  Some run fine.  Others are choppy at times.
Anyway, does this info suggest anything to you.  I wonder if it's a compatability issue between System 10.4.11, Classic Mode and the Power PC chip?  Was this common with Classic Mode?
I thank you so much in adavance dor any suggestions on how to solve this problem.
    Ed

  • New Mac Mini running slowly

Just bought a new Mac Mini (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo; 512MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM). Innitially it seemed to run really quickly and smoothly. Then I started loading software on it like MS Office, downloaded Stuffit (new version). Now it takes forever to switch between applications, internet seems slower (but this may just be subjective). Once an app. is up and running it seems to be appropriately fast and responsive, but if I pause for too long, or change between open apps, it takes forever to repond.
Also, and this may be a separate issue, dragging and clicking, one of the beautifully intuitive things about Macs, doesn't seem to be consistantly intuitive anymore. Seems more and more like a PC! Maybe I'm just getting old and stupid, but I'm particularly having troubles with this in iTunes. I'll likely post about this over there too. Thanks for any suggestions.
    John

Performance issues are often highly subjective, so as much as the system may seem to be deteriorating, it's possible that the sense it is doing so is based more on the resultant frustration from small changes in perceived speed resulting from such things as running non-native applications such as MS Office.
The previous poster is right, I think, in suggesting that you might try Neo Office instead of MS Office, since this will get you out from under the poor performance issues inevitably related to the use of Rosetta. In addition however, I think you might take this opportunity to do a little maintenance to ensure that the system is running as efficiently as possible.
The telling comment you make is that the system appeared to run well at first, but deteriorated in performance as you installed additional software. While it's possible you are reacting to a small subjective change, it's also possible that in installing additional software you have impacted MacOS. I would suggest you download a general-purpose utility such as YASU from www.versiontracker.com, and once installed, run all tasks (except deleting cookies). Particularly important in this situation is the prebinding task. Prebinding is the process which links applications and their libraries and updating it will make sure that this is correct. If it is not, you would typically find that applications are slow to open and can suffer brief 'stall-outs' as they are running.
YASU will also do some routine tasks such as repairing permissions, clearing log files and caches etc that can all be negatively impacted by installing software and updating the system, so the tasks involved can be beneficial in dealing with deteriorating performance.
The reboot after running YASU will take a little longer than usual - this is not a problem. Afterwards, once the system has rebuilt the cache files, you should notice slightly smoother performance, if not a little faster.

  • Mac mini running slowly.

I've had problems for a couple of days now with my mini after coming back from a week long trip. The mouse is lagging and everything is running slow. Even when I only had finder open, it still had difficulties. I restarted it a couple of times and I tried getting rid of my widgets and emptying my trash but that didn't help. I've reinstalled my browsers because those seemed to be what was making it slow but even after that it still worked poorly. The only thing i did with my computer since I've been home is use Garage Band, iTunes, Facebook, YouTube, and I downloaded some sheet music and a couple of paint applications. I also tried to install Finale Allegro (Via disk) but much to my dismay it didn't work with my OS. My "About This Mac" reads: Processor 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.

Do you have a print job that hasn't completed?
How much free disk space do you have? You need 10% to 15% free for systems usage, or performance really suffers.
You can try running the cleaning and maintenance tasks on OnyX, available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html

    Several problems exist.
    1.
Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to its file system. Time Machine has not been configured properly To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
    2.
You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.
    3.
That Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file

  • Mac is running very slowly.

    Hi Apple Community,
My mac has been running very slowly, and there has been several other problems as well. I have a early 2009 iMac, running OS X 10.9.5. First of all, I have recently moved all of my photos and music to an external hard drive to clear up the internal hard drive, and Time Machine is also backing up to an external hard drive, and the internal hard drive is now about 60% free. I thought that would be able to get my Mac to run quicker, but it is still has slow as it was before. I have read recent community posts on what to do about this, one suggested downloading Etresoft to get a report on the condition of my mac. I ran Etresoft (I honestly don't know what to make of anything in the report), and the report is here:
    Problem description:
Mac runs very slowly, applications will take longer than usual to open. Internal hard drive is about 60% full, and 3 external hard drives are used to hold photos, music, and backups.

So if someone could please explain what this means, or suggest some other ways to find out what is wrong with my Mac, it would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks
    Morgan

You need to uninstall all Norton Antivirus softwarwe/ utilities.
    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us
Also, uninstall all Seagate hard drive software.
In addition, you need to install more RAM into your iMac.
Your year and model IMac can take a max. total of 8 GBs of RAM.
I strongly recommend that you purchase and install the maximum amount of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

The problem started a few weeks ago with a small decrease in speed, and the videos now crash while the sound remains normal. When I open the Finder or any file it seems that I'm opening the windows with the hourglass spinning. I've already  cleaned temporary, removed everything that was saved on the table, I made up for the mountain lion. I have a Mac 27-inch, 3.06 GHz processor Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB, Software OS X 10.8. With space on the HD.
