How many beeps do you hear?

  • I'm sure this is a setting fix, but can't find it-.  All of my windows for mac programs open when I turn on my computer, such that I have to close each one individually to get to my desk top.  How do I adjust so none of them open unless I choose to?

A couple of shots in the dark here.
Try this, start in safe mode and see if it will go. Power it off, power it on holding the shift key, continue to hold the key till you see a progress BAR, then release and see if it will finish booting. If it does login see if thigs work, then log out and try booting normally. (NOTE that this takes considerably longer,be patient)
Another thing you can try is powering it up holding the OPTION key and see if the start up manager brings your HD up on the screen, if it does click on that and see.

  • Mac wont load anything on power up

when i turn on my mac the screen looks very distorted, pixels all over the place all pinky blues, and can only just make out the start up apple logo,
then a dark line moves down the screen, and a box appears saying that my mac needs to be restarted, and that i can use the power button by holding it down for 7 secs (it repeats it in a few languages)
so i do this and it just says it again.
this suddenly happened when watching youtube, the screen froze and pixel colours messed up, and it wouldn't do anything.

    Two things to try:
    1) Boot from your original install DVD (hold c at start up) and then run Disc Utility and run both Repair Disc and Repair Permissions.
If you can't do that then
    2)
Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    *fsck -fy*
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - _run the command again and keep doing so_ (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot

  • How can I stop Foxfire from automatically loading when I turn on my computer that runs on Windows Vista?

Foxfire automatically loads when I boot up my computer after all the other essential programs boot up. I'd like to know how to disable the start-up menu link that allows the program to load up when the computer first starts up because the Foxfire browser isn't needed when I first start the computer. Besides, when I first start my computer, it's inevitably not hooked to the internet and it's just a bit annoying to see foxfire load when it's not needed. Furthermore, it takes up precious memory in the RAM when it's running, thus slowing down my machine. Please, someone show me how to keep this program from booting when I start up my computer. By the way, my system is Windows Vista and Foxfire does not show up in the start-up folder. Only by going to the default program page and clicking on Foxfire does it show that Foxfire has a hidden default that makes it start when the computer starts. All I'm looking for is to not see it when I boot my computer.

Thanks for pointing me to the link about the startup programs changes. I found the solution there. Foxfire was hiding in the hidden startup menu. Once I found it using msconfig, I was able to stop it from loading when I started my computer. Again, thanks for the help.

  • My Macbook does not load when I turn it on

My macbook froze and was making a faint buzzing sound, so I turned it off by pushing and holding the power button. When I turned it on, the grey screen popped up and nothing came on it for about a minute. Then a folder with a question mark in the middle came up and was flashing and did absoutly nothing.
Is there any way I can fix this without taking it to the Apple Store??

Hopefully the advice of diagnosing the drive using the system CD will bring you good results. However (as you can see if you browse the forums) there have been quite a few reports of non-recoverable hard drive failures which seem to relate to certain Seagate HDD models as per Retrodata's MacBook-Seagate HDD failure announcement.
If the problem is of that scale, taking the drive to an HDD recovery shop may not help given the gravity of the drive failure, though you might want to try with one that gives free diagnosis. If you have your data backep up or that price is too expensive, at least feel lucky if you are guarantee and let the Apple Store exchange the drive for free (caveat: you might get the same model as a replacement). If not, at least the HDD is a user installable part that can be easily replaced by youself following the MacBook HDD DIY replacement.
Hoping that you get lucky in reviving your hard drive, I would ask you to share with us the rest of your story, either for a glimmer of hope or to pinpoint the failing batch of drives as to lobby for a recall.
    Good luck.

  • How come everytime my Mac shuts down, when I turn it back on ,Garageband has to Re-Download the program files?

How come every time my Mac shuts down, when Iturn it back on,Garageband has to Re-Download the program files?

Check this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547 and this one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341?viewlocale=en_US
If it sounds like a RAM issue it could be one of the RAM chips has failed. You could try removing the RAM one at a time and see if it starts with one still installed.

  • Mac shuts down when I turn my external hard drive

    Hello,
I installed Yosemite 2 days ago, and something when wrong right away: when I turned off my LaCie external hard drive, my 27 inches iMac immediately shuts down (I tried a couple of times), to restart a few seconds later. A message lets me know if I want to send a notice of the problem to Apple (which I did), and then everything is fine. Except its not, and whenever I turn off that hard drive (that is connected through thunderbolt), same thing happens. It never happened with the previous OS, so I hate myself right now for moving onto Yosemite.
Does anyone when through the same thing, and possibly has a fix ? Thanks.

Hmmm. Did you ever install any external software (i.e. some LaCie installer disk) or something? That's my guess, that you have 3rd party software (which is totally not necessary) which is incompatible with Yosemite and is causing a kernel panic. The solution would be to uninstall the software - it is never necessary to use 3rd party software to use a hard disk, and it can cause system instability and data loss.
If you don't know how find this out, you could download and run a program called 'etrecheck' (just Google it) and post the output here.

  • My hp stream wont work, when I turn it on the cursor is on a black screen, help!

my hp stream wont work. I turned it on and the cursor appears but nothing works. Its fully charged, I've tried turning it off and on but still no luck. Please help

Has it ever worked?  Hold volume down (-) while pressing power button.  That takes you to BIOS (CMOS setup).  Follow the menus for Windows reinstall.

  • My finder wont open when i turn on my mac.

I would simply turn on my Mac, but Finder wont open and it wont let me open other apps, the only thing that opens up is Safari, other than that i cant open anything else! I don't know whats wrong.

You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
          http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
    6) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.

  • I turned off my Mac and now when I turn it on it wont boot. It says I have no bootable device and that I need to insert a boot disk..... I never got a boot disk....

What do I do???? I got it yesterday and now it's not working! Brand new straight from the Apple web store. It never came with any sort of disk and now it's telling me that I have no bootable device and that I need a boot disk.... I need this for school... PLEASE HELP ME!!!

    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
