My macbook air shuts down instead of going to sleep.
My MacBook Air running OSX 10.7.5 shuts down rather than going to sleep when left unused for a short period.
I notice this started about 3 or 4 days ago.
It doesn't matter if it is connected to the power supply or running from battery.
I haven't made any changes to system preferences.
Any Ideas.
It did a similar thing when I first got it and it had to back to Apple to have most of it's innards replaced under warranty.
Regards,
Joe
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

IMac G5 shuts down instead of going to sleep
Recently, my G5 iMac started shutting down instead of going to sleep. I have reset all of the sleep controls but it still shuts down. Does anyone have any ideas? I am running 10.5.5
Have you vacuumed the fans and the air vents? You can also reset the [SMU|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908] and check in Console>system log for any messages about "maximum temperature exceeded for 30 seconds".

Sometime in the last week or so my mac mini has started going into full shut down instead of sleep mode.
I have tried checking and unchecking energy saver boxes but haven't found anything which will get me back to where I used to be - and I haven't knowingly changed anything to make this happen.- maybe an OS update caused it?
The machine will fire up with a tablet click rather than needing the reset button to be pushed so clearly the machine is sort of halfway between sleep and full 'off'. Most frustrating as one of the key issues for me in getting this my first mac was its easy sleep and super quick fire up compared to windows.
Any help appreciated
Oh yes I just remembered that I did just install 2 8gb of crucial RAM (to replace the supplied 2 2gb but surely that can't have anything to do with it - can it)?Adding to my first post I can now advise that when the mac goes into sleep mode the light on the front stays on (it does not pulse so clearly it is not really sleeping).
When i click the tablet / keyboard this is actually what triggers the mac to reboot
I have tried resetting the SMC as per the following link to no avail

MacBook Pro C2D shuts down instead of going to sleep (on battery power)
dear macusers,
it happended the first time 2 days ago, today again: while my MacBook Pro is inactive on battery power the screen dims, then turns black like usually, but then it doesn't go to sleep, instead it shuts down. I have 10.4.8 installed, i didn't do the summertime update. I took a look at the log files (/var/log) but couldn't find something strange. Never had a problem using my machine...
anybody has the same issue?
sorry for my bad english!
johnWhen that happened to me a couple months ago with my Powerbook G4 it happened to be the battery itself. I did the apple battery exchange since there was a recall on my battery. I use my notebook primarily as a desktop replacement and hadn't noticed the problem until months later when I unplugged the notebook, seconds later the notebook would shutdown and even reset the system clock.
Applecare couldn't figure it out so I went to my friends house and swapped batteries to test and sure enough, when I put my battery into his computer, it shut his down and reset his clock.
Check the battery. -
Macbook shuts down instead of going to sleep
Since installing Lion, my 2008 white Macbook does not go to sleep either automatically after the preset time (15 minutes) or when I close the lid. Instead it completely shuts down and has to be restarted with the power button. This happens regardless of whether on battery or plugged in to power.
It seems to take much longer to boot up -- about 2 min. 45 sec.-- than it did with Snow Leopard. Login seems to lag several seconds after entering password. Any ideas?
(edit to add: I recently replaced the battery and upgraded the RAM to 4GB.While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybody has Lion. You should also post this question there. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

Computer shuts down instead of going to sleep (no battery)
Hi, I've checked some of the posts and notice that there are power management issues to these macs. I just picked up a used one and with no battery installed, if I go to Apple-sleep, the coomputer will shut off instead of sleeping. If in the energy settings, the computer is set to sleep at a given time, the computer will do a hard shutdown. I have it set to never sleep for now, but would like some guidance from the forum on how to deal with this power issue.
any ideas, thanks
LisaI've been having this problem for the last 4 months. I called Apple today and let them know about my MacBook which is only 1 year old. I've installed the battery update, reset the SMC and calibrated the battery, yet always when I reach about 45% my MacBook shuts down; I've never once ever had a low level warning.
Well, Apple asked for the serial # on the battery and then they told me that that serial # was not affected and that the Battery Update program is only for Apple Care customers. I told them their web site says nothing to the effect - they said regardless that I'll have to buy a new battery and I could not be helped; I'm not sure who to complain to since from what I have read, the problems I've had with my battery and the time period I bought the MacBook (directly from Apple) all point to the battery issue. I need someone to give some advice on who to call.
Here is the site i went to and the phone number I called is from there:

My iPad 3 shuts down instead of going to sleep...
My iPad 3 has the latest software update -- I'm using WIFI and have cellular turned off.
Normally after using it, I close it and it goes to sleep, when I open I just hit the home button to turn it back on. Over the last few days, after using it, and leaving it for a while, I open it and its completely shut down and the only way to get it back on is to reset it with the power button and the home button held down till the apple show up...
any suggestions ?The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...
Restart / Reset > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Restoring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...
Note:
1) Make sure you have the Latest Version of iTunes (v11) Installed on your computer
iTunes free download from www.itunes.com/download
2) Also consider Deleting any Apps you have Purchased / Downloaded but you now never use... -
MacBook Air shuts down when I close it
Whenever I close my MacBook, it shuts down instead of going into sleep mode. At first, I thought it was a problem with my MacBook not waking up from sleep at all, but if I use the Sleep function from the drop down menu, it will wake up normally.
I've looked around the community to see if anyone had a similar issue, but most people say they need to reboot it to start it up again, which isn't my case at all. It just does a typical shut down. How do I make it go to sleep instead of shutting down when I close it?Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
bzgrep 'Previous Shutdown' /var/log/system.log*
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot. -
My MacBook Air shuts down when its more than half way charged and won't turn on unless I plug it in to the adapter? Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
If you really do have a Mid 2013 Mac Air model then it is still in warranty, as the standard Apple warranty is one year from date of purchase. So take it into an Apple store and have it diagnosed and fixed under the warranty. There is some type of hardware problem that only Apple can fix.
-
After allowing an upgrade to Lion and installing Verizon card - book shuts down every time goes to sleep. This is a brand new air! What can I do to find a fix?
If you are within 90 days of purchsae, contact Apple phone support. The global numbers are here.

My macbook air shut down! Help!
My macbook air shut down because of battery level I'm guessing. now the keyboard is still lit up and the charger appears green, yet it won't turn on at all. Help!
Try holding the power key down for 10 seconds and then rebooting.
If that does not work try and SMC Reset.

My MacBook Air shut down is slower than other macs I have seen
I think this is due to the recent Mac OS 10.8.2 update
My MacBook Air shuts down slower than usual. It will get slow and show a white screen with a spinining wheel taking up to 15 seconds.
This is longer than the startup time.
When it was new, I think it was running Mac OS 10.8.1. Shutdown was super speedy and took maybe just 3 seconds. It then asked me to update, so I obviously did, since I thought new improvments were made.
So how can I get rid of this slow shut down timings? You might try resetting the SMC. If that does not work, take it in for service (you are under warranty).

Since upgrading to Yosemite my computer (iMac late 2012 model) closes down instead of going to sleep. When I restart I get a message saying "your computer shut down because of a problem". Does anyone have similar problem? What is the solution?
