My macbook pro 2008 running OS X 10.5.8. But I can't connect my new iPhone!
My macbook pro 2008 running OS X 10.5.8. However I have recently bought an iPhone5 and I cannot curently connect my iPhone to my mac, as I need iTunes 7 - BUT i can't download iTunes 7 since my software does not support it!
So I obviously need to connect my iPhone to my laptop, but the software is getting in the way! How can I update my software so that I can run iTunes 7
Many thanks
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs. You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

Any advice cheers
You should be able to run all of your devices through either the BT router or the Airport Express. As Bob says, running both will complicate matters. You will have to make sure to configure them correctly to work together. When your Airport Express arrives, you may want to consider asking in the Airport forum and maybe the iTunes Home Sharing forum. It isn't a MacBook Pro question. I know nothing about AirTunes, but there are many people in those forums who do.

Im sorry if im reposting something somebody else has already poasted but I couldnt find this topic in the forum.
I have a 15" Macbook Pro bought December 2008 is my memory serves me correct
The specifics are
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
I have about 129GB free, what I dont understand why it runs so slowly. I've run Disk Utilities and no errors or problems show up and frequently run CleanMyMac. I have recently installed Adobe CS5 but with 4GB RAM but I dont see why this would cause the computer to run slower as I should have enough ram. Can I upgrade to 6GB? Is there any other reason to why my computer would be running so slow? Applications often crash, or it can take me up to 5 min just closing an application down.
Thanks for the help!I have the same era MBP and recently had to change to a new hard drive. I upgraded to a faster 7200 rpm drive and have no regrets. FYI, you don't have to buy a drive from them, but OtherWorld Computing does hace very helpful HD install videos (http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro15_unibodyhd/) and also a handy $30 gizmo, the "USB 2 Universal Drive Adapter" that allows you to setup your new HD before installing into the MBP. Of course, if you already have a fast external FW drive you might not need it, but it worked like a charm. Also, the actual HD install in a unibody MBP literally only takes a couple of minutes.

Hi there,
I just bought my Macbook Pro two weeks ago specifiacally to use Photoshop CS and Lightroom together. It worked fine for the first few days but
has slowed down considerably since then. I live in Taiwan which makes it difficult to go to a store to have it finxed due to the language barrier
so online help would be fantastic! If the problem continues would it be possible to exchange it for an Air (if that's a wise choice?)
I look forward to a quick reply!
Thank you
CandiceHi Clinton,
Thanks for that super quick reply!!
I wasn't expecting this to happen with my new computer! However photoshop and lightroom are running ridulously slowly, even while scrolling through pictures the beachball appears!
Ill give you some information that may help you understand this problem better.

I have a Macbook pro 13.3 w/ i5 that has no hdmi port. I want to be able to connect the Mac to my TV set to watch Video, Photos and files from Mac to TV.
Is the Thunderbolt port similar to a display port or mini display port? Can I use thunderbolt port to connect thru a mini displayport to HDMI cable or converter?
Been trying to locate a USB to HDMI cable or converter (at a reasonable price) but all I found is a displayport or mini displayport to HDMI cable/converter.
What other options are available ?
Thanks a lot for your assistance.Thunderbolt uses a Mini DisplayPort adapter to send video and audio to HDMI. Here's some on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_2_8?url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-ke ywords=mini+displayport+to+hdmi&sprefix=mini+dis%2Caps%2C249#/ref=nb_sb_noss?ur l =search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=mini+displayport+to+hdmi+with+audio&rh = n%3A172282%2Cn%3A!493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Ck%3Amini+displayport+to+hdmi+with+audio

OpenGL being disabled. (MacBook Pro 2008, Mac OS 10.9)
I opened a file I had been working on yesterday on a different Mac, and got the error message: "3D functionality is currently disabled due to OpenGL being disabled." I am currently using MacBook Pro (2008), running Mac OS 10.9, using PhotoShop CC. I've already looked at Ps Preferences>Performance and I see this. (see attachment)
How can this be solved? Thank you. This is not a new post, but I can't find how to start a new thread. I'm hopeful that someone will see it and suggest a remedy for my OpenGL not being fully functional.
I'm using a Mac Pro, 16GB dual processor machine in OS X (10.7.5) with a Radeon (Mac Edition) 32 mb AGP Vesrion graphics card. I suspect that I may be experiencing the same problem as Anna (above).

I just upgraded my 2008 macbook pro to OS X Maverick from Snow Leopard but my computer is running a bit buggy and slow. How do I downgrade back down to snow leopard?
You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

Jamesandmacbooks,
if by “free” you mean “gratis” (as opposed to, say, “open source”), then there’s only one version of OS X to date that’s gratis, namely Mavericks. You can only download Mavericks if you currently have Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later installed. If you’re still running Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.something) on your 2008 MacBook Pro, then you’ll need to first purchase the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, install it on your MacBook Pro, and run Software Update to get it to 10.6.8, after which you can download Mavericks gratis from the Mac App Store and install that. Be sure that your MacBook Pro meets all of Mavericks’ system requirements before trying to install it. If you currently run any PowerPC apps, note that they won’t be supported in any version of OS X after Snow Leopard. -
I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?
It's almost impossible. The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that. Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15. In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.
By the way, I found your answer by searching this forum. I would suggest using the search function here in the futuere. -
Hello, I have a Macbook pro which runs under 10.5.8. I want to use a PC interface. I've been told I need to purchase paralell Destop 6, Windows licence and Microsoft Office 2008 for PC. Is that correct ?
If you have a MacBook Pro with 10.5, that's usually a machine that's getting long in the tooth and thus running Windows as a virtual machine (one OS inside another) will likely be slow.
Also spending all that money for Windows (VirtualBox is free) and Office seems like almost a waste of effort if the machine is going to die suddenly.
MacBook Pro's last about 4-5 years.
To do what you want your going to have to upgrade OS X to 10.6, then either buy VMFusion or Parallels which they are now catering to 10.7 and 10.8 users, so it's slow on 10.6, or use the free VirtualBox which will run well on 10.6. Then buy a copy of Windows 7 as earlier Windows versions are not being sold, then Office 11 or whatever.
You can also install OfficeMac into 10.6, if they still sell a copy.
You see your outdated really, and anything that can work is soon to be ignored etc.
What I would consider doing instead, since your not a OS upgrade type of person (we are on 10.8 now which won't run on your machine or be extremely slow) is to buy yourself a decent Windows 7 laptop and install Office into that. Some have the demo already inside and all you have to do is activate it.
This way you get your Windows experience and Office experience, don't have to fiddle with complicated virtual machine software, or Apple's problematic Bootcamp etc as Apple really is leaving 10.5 and 10.6 users behind, and by next summer will be leaving 10.7 users behind too.
Windows 7 laptop will be the cheapest and least stressful option for you, you can continue to use the Mac until it drops dead of course.
I say this because your on 10.5, your like most computer users, just a computer user and not a geek.
You obviously have some reason you need Office, likely for a job or school and since 99% use Windows and Office, then that's what you should be using.
If your only needing Office or Office like program for something temporary, then I suggest you install the free LibreOffice into OS X, however I don't know if it will run in 10.5, you might have to upgrade to 10.6 via the 10.6.3 white retail disk, however Apple doesn't sell it anymore, but perhaps Amazon or elsewhere does.
Sorry, you have been out of the upgrade loop for quite some time, so a new machine is in order as that one is about to die soon, so I wouldn't be spending too much on it really.
If you have a fat wallet you can buy a new Mac with 10.8, and have Windows 7 installed in BootCamp (direct boot) and also into VMFusion or Parallels (copies the Bootcamp Windows so you can use both) and Office for you. It will come all set up, enter your password and use the machine.
I think OtherWorld Computing will sell you a pre-configured Mac all set up like that for you, Apple won't do it though.
You can also pay a local PC/Mac specialist to do the same.
Don't forget setting up a backup system for both Windows and OS X, add anti-malware software in Windows, you'll need that.
IMO a new Windows 7 laptop would be the cheaper, less stressful option, Learning Bootcamp and virtual machine software can be a pain if your not computer savvy, al;so Apple has a nasty habit of upgrading the operating system constantly, now on a annual basis. You don't upgrade and all your third party software, then your denied security updates in short order. Windows 7 laptop will last a decade on the same version, only needing simple updates, not upgrades.
If you want your Windows machine to last even longer, like a decade, then get a desktop tower instead of a laptop.
Mac's are for those who can handle a lot of change, as Apple is about always inflicting change. It's costly change too.
Good Luck
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
Things to consider before upgrading OS X -
Macbook Pro 2008 (4,1) RAM issues
Hello all
I've had some maddening issues with installing new RAM into my Macbook Pro 2008.
Machine: MBP March 2008 (4,1) , 2.5Ghz, 2GB RAM, OSX 10.7.5
I ordered and installed a pair of 2GB RAM sticks from Crucial, to replace the two 1GB RAM sticks I had installed, to bring my machine up to a total of 4GB. Since doing that, the machine would kernel panic repeatedly (and sometimes start-up with three beeps, indicating memory issues). After checking repeatedly that they must be the right RAM modules for my machine, I got the sticks replaced by crucial, but afterwards I still had the same issue, so I determined it must be the machine's fault.
This started an arduous process of testing and trying to fix every aspect of the machine I could think of, resetting the PRAM, repairing permissions trying different combinations of RAM modules, running all the Disk-warrior and TechTool repairs and diagnostics (its clean), running the machine with no third-party devices attached, safe-boot mode, booting from an external drive, and eventually re-installing the entire operating system and running off a clean install. In all the cases, if I had the 4GB in, the machine would kernel panic. I can't begin to list all the things and combinations I tried in order to isolate the issue, but it seemed the only thing I could determine would guarantee the machine to lock-up was to run it with the 4GB.
I also ran rember utility for several hours, several times while the 4GB sticks were in (and it found nothing).
There is a curious pattern however.
Placing both the 2GB RAM (total for 4GB) modules inside the machine will guarantee a kernel panic. Placing one 2GB module and one 1GB module (total of 3GB) also guarantees a crash. However, using either of the 2GB modules alone, in either of the two slots, is perfectly acceptable. Isn't that strange?
It's almost as if the machine is allergic to having both slots occupied at once, but that doesn't make any sense because before buying the 2GB modules, it ran with two 1GB modules, one in each slot.
I'm going to try putting back in the two original 1GB modules just to see if it can still run. If anyone has any suggestions of anything I can try to get this machine working with its 4GB, I will be EXTREMELY grateful!
Thank you,
Andrew
AndrewI tried running from 1GB + 1GB, and it ran fine for a few hours, but upon waking from sleep I got the dreaded 3 beeps. This absolutely never happens otherwise, so I know where the problem lies now. The machine is back onto a single 2GB stick and running fine.
My machine won't run with both slots used. I don't know if that is only a hardware problem, if it could be firmware or even some type of software bug, but that is where the issue is.
The RAM I ordered is the right one for my machine, according to the crucial website, and also to their ram scanning tool. They are 2GB 200-pin DDR2 SODIMM 667Mhz sticks, and I'm quite sure those are the right ones for my machine. I will contact them and point them to this thread and se what they say though.
And remember that in this case, it doesn't work with an older module either. 1GB + 2GB crashes. It eventually crashes if I have both slots occupied. -
So my MacBook Pro (2008) wont turn on, it's battery usually lasts around 30 minutes - 1 hour when fully charged.
I turned it off last night, running fine. This morning I came to turn it on and there was no response other than the white light on the opening button, not flashing just still.
I've plugged it in to charge and have tried about 4 times, each time the backlight makes no change (just black) and the opening button light stays on.
No idea what to do, I haven't recently backed it up and have lots of important files i need.
Any help would be excellent. Thanks!I am also having this problem. I have tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM. When I press the power button the optical drive makes a noise, the fans come on (not loud), and the hard drive spins. The white light on the front (early 2008 Macbook Pro) also stays on. If I press the caps lock button the light does not come on. The battery takes a charge (all the lights will light up when the button is pressed) and the power adapter shows a solid green light. No changes in hardware have been made in over a year.
Shy of taking the thing apart, any ideas? I live 5+ hours from the nearest Apple Store.
Thank you anyone for the help! -
HT1338 have an old macbook pro 2008
lost Safari on old Macbook pro 2008.... can't find a downloadable version of safari, please help! -- Thanks
The correct version of Safari must suit the OS you are running on the MacBook, not the MacBook itself. I notice your tag says your have Mac OS 10.5.8 Leopard.
Here is the link for the version of Safari for Mac OS 10.5.8 Leopard.
Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard
If you are running a different Mac OS post back. -
Improve performance on macbook pro 2008
I have a macBook pro 2008 15 inch screen (aluminum body)
I have a BIG FAT Aperture library now (25000 images+) and the current config (4 GIG working memory) is just squeaking by
I have been told you can expand the working memory to 8 GIG with OS X- the manual however says max 4.
If you can inform me and have the time, I'd appreciate it
better a hundred or so for new memory than 2K+ for a new machine
thanks to all for reading and considering this request

Dave RossIf Page Ins are more than about 10% of Page Outs after a long day of your normal work, that work would benefit perceptibly from more RAM. The higher the percentage, the greater the benefit. My guess is that with an Aperture Library that large, unless you have nothing but Aperture running, more RAM will probably turn out to be helpful.
If your MBP is one of the unibody models, it can use 8 GB. if it's an early-2008, non-unibody MBP, it can only use 6 GB.
