You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair. The model was discontinued in February 2011, so the replacement program will be ending quite soon.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Kernel Panics for 2010 MacBook Pro 15" can anyone help?
This has been going on for a while now after the hard drive was originally replaced back in the summer. Tried fixing it myself, however no luck and it keeps coming back. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks

You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and your log is showing that the NVIDIA GPU is damaged.
Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro have got a damaged NVIDIA GPU that may cause unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
Apple is repairing all of these MacBooks Pro for free if they were purchased less than 3 years ago, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. Also, print the log and take it with you -

Hi Everyone.

Just this week I am unable to see info I am trying to add to my iCalendar. But when I look at my iPad and iPhone the "New Evnt" appears. Because it doesn't look like there is anything on my MacBook Pro can't enter appointments. Any help is appreciated.
This can be caused by a number of issues.
Was everything working and then suddenly stopped??
Or is this a new clean setup and has never worked.
Do you have a cable modem which is not a router and the TC setup in bridge? That will cause it. The TC must be in router mode, ie dhcp and nat.
Check the IP the MBP gets including dns and gateway..
Then check the ipad/iphone.. post what IP dns and gateway (router in applespeak) they get. -
Just Got a MacBook Pro. Can Anyone Help?
Hi;
I was recently bequeathed a 15-inch MacBook Pro from my dad, which I believe was originally purchased sometime in 2006 (it's a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB RAM). I've got a few questions about how to get the Mac up to speed:
1 - I'm currently running Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.8. Which OS can I upgrade to and what's the best way to do it? I just downloaded the OS 10.6.8 combo update and am ready to take the next step.
2 - The battery is dead. In researching the problem I discovered that this was a known issue with Apple. What can be done about getting a replacement battery?
3 - I would like to transfer my iTunes library from the PC, where it currently resides, to this MacBook. However my dad already has his own iTunes library on it. What would be the best way to deal with bringing my library onto this MacBook?
Thank you all, as always.

Stay there on 10.6.8, your machine is too dated for the newer OS X versions and will only slow it down and you'll have to dump all the free PPC software currently installed and the Intel ones will require a paid upgrade to work with 10.7+.
It's a 2006 machine, it's 2013 now, that means it's a whopping 7 years old and about to die at any time (they don't last forever and 7 years is GREAT for a laptop) so it makes absolutely no sense to spend any more money on it, just run 10.6.8 until the wheels fall off.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
2 - The battery is dead. In researching the problem I discovered that this was a known issue with Apple. What can be done about getting a replacement battery?
Plug it into a strong power source and do a #1 SMC Reset, see after a couple of days if it will hold a charge, if not contact Apple and see if you can get a replacement battery. Else look at Other World Computing or MacMall.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If you take the Mac in for a battery, also take the charger as it might be the problem and they like to have it all there to eval.
3 - I would like to transfer my iTunes library from the PC, where it currently resides, to this MacBook. However my dad already has his own iTunes library on it. What would be the best way to deal with bringing my library onto this MacBook?
Make sure to have your music backed up on a external drive, then you can simply transfer it to the new Mac.
If you want to use the drive back and forth between the PC, then right click and format it (no data you want to keep) exFAT (not NTFS). Format exFAT on the PC (Windows XP can install it free from Microsoft) this way the drive can be read/write by either Mac or Windows. DO not format exFAT on the Mac, it messes it up.
Under Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts you can create a new account for yourself, leave your Dad's alone (so you can update the software etc) and just use your account and put your music there for setting it up how you like. If you need more drive space, move (copy, then delete the originals) of your Dads data to the external drive and reboot.
Use the Apple menu to log in/out and switch user accounts.
Replace the new blank iTunes Library with the one from the PC into the Music folder and iTunes will take care of the rest.
I know your excited to have a Mac, but quite frankly that's a really old box, and Apple upgrades their OS X versions annually now and kind of forces a faster hardware turnover rate than Windows with it's 10 years of support per OS version, so it's not important to always think you need to stay with the latest OS X version, because sometimes Apple won't allow newer ones to install on some older Macs, despite them still working fine. (like the machines that can't upgrade to 10.8, despite being able to run 10.7)
Some older Mac's Apple allows newer OS X versions to be installed, but it causes some much hardship, slowdowns and shaky behavior that it's best for the computer to be on a earlier OS X version, that's your case with those older processors and graphics.
If you really get hooked on a Mac, then save for a new machine that you can upgrade the OS X version a few times, then stop and just be happy there. Because each time a upgrade occurs, it's a major shock and problems galore, plus having to pay to upgrade all new versions of software.
It's anything but peace and stability on Mac's, unless you tread carefully and slowly. -
Macbook Pro Retina: can anyone help me with running 2 extended desktop DVIs?
I know I need 2 thunderbolt to DVI adapters for this. In the UK these are £25 each, but the MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapters which look the same are very much cheaper .....
http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Female-Adapter-Macbook-Laptop/dp/B003BHHIA4/re f=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1359830910&sr=1-1&keywords=minidisplayport+to +DVI
They look the same as thunderbolt to DVIs but is there a difference? Anybody know if the thunderbolt to DVI is an ACTIVE adapter, which means the cheaper versions won't work?
Secondly, I've read scary stuff here from people who think their thunderbolt to DVI fried their monitors. Is there any evidence which supports this?
Does anyone out there use two extended desktop DVIs on a daily basis with a Pro Retina? Any tips or things I should know?I suggest you buy the Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapters as I have tried another brand and it dod not work. That was on a late 15" 2011 model, YMMV.
Second I have never heard of a Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapter ever frying a monitor of any make or model.
Please post references to this claim.
May be possible with a poorly desinged adapter with some of the TB power output being cross linked to one of the DVI pins/connectors. But still doubtful. -
Hi Everyone,
I lost my KN presentation that i spent a day with my boss to finish it. I lost it by mistakenly shutting down my Macbook pro. Can anyone please tell me how to recover the files back as i'm really2 in trouble and my job depends on it...

Version 5.1.1 (1034)How exactly did you shut down your laptop? Not a hard restart (holding down the power button), I hope... if that's the case, then it is extremely unlikely the file is still intact on your computer. If it is, it would be an image on your RAM, and it is time-and-resource-intensive to recover it if it is even there. RAM memory is disposable and always being written over. Sorry dude...
If it wasn't a hard restart, Keynote should have made a backup, unless you 'Force Close'd it.
It really all depends on how your mac was shut down. -
For some reason I cannot find where to attach a picture to an imessage on my MacBook Pro. Can anyone tell me?
I figured it out. Copy the picture from where you have it stored on your computer, and paste into the text line of the iMessage. Simple!

I attempted to update OS X 10.8.5 today and it seems to be stuck. It won't even let me restart. I have a MacBook Pro. Can someone help?
Hold down the Power button for 5-10 seconds until the computer shuts down. Restart. Report what state the computer is in at that time.

Essentials on Mac Pro. Can anyone help?
I am having great difficulty converting my Q2004 PC files to Quicken Essentials on Mac Pro. Can anyone help?

Quicken Essentials for Mac is universally loathed by most members of this forum when compared to the $15 Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) that can be downloaded from Intuit:
http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
However, you will have to first download Quicken 2006 PPC from Intuit:
https://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/patching/quicken-2006-manual-updates--ma c-/GEN82200.html
and then open your Quicken 2004 data file in Quicken 2006 (on a Mac that will still run PowerPC apps) and it will automatically convert the data to Quicken 2005/6/7 format to be easily opened by Quicken 2007 for Intel without further conversion. -
I am having trouble creating a timeline in a trial verson of Premiere Pro. Can anyone help?
Quickest way is to drag a clip into the New Item icon (left bottom corner Project window)
You can also right click on the clip in the Project window and create sequence from clip (or something in that order, not at my editing machine right now).
Get Started with Premiere Pro
New to Premiere Pro? Get started with your first project — editing a video. In less than an hour, you'll learn to edit together different types of media to tell a video story. -
when i use the apple tv it puts my computer to sleep. the last time this happened i lost microsoft word with all the documents. i'm asked to relaunch, but that step fails. i'm frantic! can anyone help me see my documents again? this also prevents me from reading attachments in my mail, since they are frequently launched in word.
There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it. -
I have a Java/CVE-2010-94 virus on my macbook pro. Can Someone help me fix this?
I used Virus Barrier Express that I downloaded from the App Store and it found a virus named Java/CVE-2010-94. I ran Virus Barrier Express again after I prssed the "fixed it" button; however, i'm not sure if this virus or any other virus is still on my MacBook Pro. Can someone please help me know if i'm safe to use my Mac?
*The first sign of any type of virus was when I was on a website and my screen froze. I couldn't move anything or press anything. Something popped up and told me to turn off the Mac. I had no choice and I did turn it off. I used my Virus Barrier Express to scan any viruses, but nothing appeared. It only appeared after I downloaded new updates yesterday.
*I just did some research and it turned out to be a "kernel Panic". http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742 I haven't encountered another one ever since so does that mean my Mac is safe now?Steven --
Get rid of the VirusBarrier Express. At this time, there are no Mac viruses. All you're doing with that thing is slowing down your Mac. Look in your VBE folder, to see if there's an UNinstaller. I don't know why Apple is making these things available. They're garbage, 98% of them. Two good ones are ClamXav and Sophos. But still, IMHO, they are unnecessary.
Kernel Panics, on the other hand, are serious. If you don't have any more of them, that's good. If you have any more of them, come back and post your Panic report here.
Here's info on this virus, which should affect only PCs.

But the have some great advice to avoid malware:
Take the following steps to help prevent infection on your computer:
Enable a firewall on your computer.
Get the latest computer updates for all your installed software.
Use up-to-date antivirus software.
Limit user privileges on the computer.
Use caution when opening attachments and accepting file transfers.
Use caution when clicking on links to web pages.
Avoid downloading pirated software.
Protect yourself against social engineering attacks.
Use strong passwords. -
My MacBook Pro crashed. Please help?
My MacBook Pro crashed so I bought a new Crucial 512Gb. I tried using my installer DVD to install OS X onto it. It said installation failed as some of the necessary files are not able to be copied. Could somebody help please?
You can't download it - you'll need to get a copy of the machine-specific discs from Apple. However...
...if you're near an Apple Store, they may have copies of your machine-specific discs that they use for the techs (but not to sell). You may be able to get them to load the OS onto your new SSD. It's worth taking the chance, anyway, as I'm sure that it would take a couple of weeks to get the discs from Apple.
Good luck,
Clinton
