My macbook pro fell and now it won't boot - superdrive issue?

Hi everyone,
I had a dreadful accident today. My macbook pro (mid 2007) model fell from the table; the lid opened up a little bit but thankfully the display wasn't damaged. The thing is that it won't boot; the screen remains black. The superdrive makes continuously this noise it does when the mac wakes from sleep or boots, and the boot process doesn't go any further. I have already reset its BIOS cache by removing the battery, but with no success.
Anyone familiar with this type of problem? Any chance it is coverable with applecare?
Thank you in advance,
-- ernani

It's hard to diagnose but you do have a problem. Take it to an Apple store or AASP and have them diagnose your damage. And, no AppleCare does not cover user accidents. Check with your homeowners insurance.

Sounds like something internal was damaged in the fall, probably the disk drive. Take to Apple and ask them to fix it.

  • Brand new macbook pro -- installed updates, now it won't boot

I just got my macbook pro yesterday, and ran system update. I also migrated my old apps over. I left it to install over night. This morning, I check on the install, and it's showing the grey screen with an image of the power button and the instructions to turn the computer off and on. I did so, but got the same message 3 times. Any advice before I call apple?

Just thought I'd update everyone on what happened (which I now know is a kernel panic)
I came home from work, and used my OSX disk to repair permissions and the disk. Figured the problem would be solved. The problem continued. So I reinstalled OSX. Still experiencing the KPs upon boot up. So I gave apple a call and was instructed to do a hardware test... except now the macbook was no longer reading the disc. The tech decided that it was most likely a hardware problem and set me up with a replacement.
I do wonder what the hardware test would have shown, but hopefully this new macbook will be free of hardware issues!

  • My Macbook Pro crashed and now it won't even start up.

I have had my Macbook Pro for 3 years now and in the first 2.5 years I never had any problems, however in the past 6 months it has crashed at least 5 times. The most recent crash being today. Usually when it crashes I'll give it a moment and then turn it on again, everything would work as normal, but today I tried to restart it and nothing happened. I tried various times but everytime my laptop wont even make a noise.
(Side note: the battery was at 90% so its not that the battery ran out.)

    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
(these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.)

  • My MacBook Pro fell, and now when I power it up, it shows a flashing icon of a question mark in a file folder. Is this repairable?

ITMS there anything I can try to restore it? Thank you

That display means you do not have a reconizable boot device.  Add to that the drop, and the hard disk is either deeply confused physically or dead.
Other ohysical damage is quite possible.
Take it to a Gnius Bar and have them confirm or deny more damage than the hard disk.

  • I recently changed my MacBook Pro password, and now I don't remember it.  Is there anyway to gain access to my mac without reinstalling or deleting everything that's on it?  I don't have the disk that came with it either.

Hi.  I recently changed my MacBook Pro password, and now I don't recall what it is.  My hope is that I can somehow gain access without deleting everything currently on it.  I do not have the MAC disk that it came with.  Is there something I can do myself?  Should I take it to the MAC store?  Thanks in advance for your help.

It helps with this kind of question to state which system version you are using on the computer as the answer will vary.

  • My hard drive failed, has been replaced, and now it won't boot to CD.

My hard drive failed, has been replaced, and now it won't boot to CD to install the OS package. It would boot for a while, get through the first cd of install and would stop randomly in the next install. I found out that the installation disk was cracked so I went out and purchased the Mac Box Set which includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09 under advisement from an associate at the local apple store. Now, I try installing this new OS disk and all I get is the apple logo without a spinning wheel for about 10 minutes and the computer restarts and does it again. I have tried booting from disk, holding c while starting up, and in safemode, holding shift while booting. Please help save my poor poor macbook!!!

These errors look like corrupt or missing files that leopard requires. It sound like you need to start from scratch: format your drive, reload Leopard. I realize that this is probably what you are trying to do.
If you cannot boot from install DVD and cannot successfully get into Safemode or Single usermode (due to a corrupt or incomplete install) then you will need another computer to assist you.
If you can get it into Target Disk Mode and have another Mac you could plug it into that Mac and reformat it.
If it will not go into TDM then you may need to take it out and put it into an external enclosure to plug into another Mac to format it.

  • Macbook pro fell and won't start up

Last night my macbook pro fell from the table, it didn't look damaged on the outside, put it to sleep and went to sleep myself. This morning i opened it up and the rainbow wheel ket spinning whatever I did. Restarted it and same thing. I tried all the possible options suggested, different keyboard combinations at start up. Verified the disk using the original cd but by hard disk won't mount, i see the hard disk icon on the top left pane but if i click on it, i read not mounted on the bottom part of the panel. Tried disk utility starting the mac on retrieve mode and says "disk can't be repaired". Now if i shut down the mac and start it up again the apple logo appears and the gear keep spinning but nothing happens. Any idea what might have happened? It was working fine before yestarday. Lion os installed.
I also would like to backup the data on time machine but can't since the mac won't start up. Any suggestion?
    Thanx

Take it to your local Genius Bar. They will be able to diagnose it there, and offer a solution.

  • Installed new screen on macbook pro 15" and now it boots fine but doesn't show the grey boot screen???

I recently installed a used but in good condition glossy display on my 15" macbook pro as mine the backlight was starting to have issues and there were some surface scratches on the screen. Anyway the screen works perfect except I don't get the grey boot screen when i start the machine up. You can tell the screen is on as you can see the backlight come on. But the screen doesn't actually show anything until it starts to go into OS X. not sure what the problem could be. I relize this is not a big issue but I am stumped on why it is doing this. Also maybe I am just crazy b/c I have dealt with the other screen for such a long time now but it doesn't seem like I am getting exactly the right colors and brighness on the new screen. I have calibrated it and all and like i said it might just be me. More concerned with the whole no boot screen issue. Anyone experience this before, and if so any solutions for me. Thanks.

  • Replaced router and now XP won't boot

Okay, hope this makes sense.  Had a Linksys (older model) and removed to place a new router in with more power.  Got setup and didn't remove old wireless connections beforehand and now, I can't boot up Windows XP unless in Safe Mode.  Not sure if I have to remove the Networkname or what, but its late and I've probably been looking at this too long.  After spending time with ISP trying to get them to reboot modem so connection would work, something got hosed up along the way.
Any help on trying to fix would be greatly appreciated!

Hi… I don’t this has anything to do with Network Name or old Wireless Network connection. Might be some of the system files are missing or gone corrupt. I would suggest you boot the system in safe mode and restore the system to a restore point dated 15 days back. This will help you to boot the system in normal mode.

  • Macbook Pro died and now won't connect to the internet

I just got home from college and my Macbook Pro died while I was using it because I couldn't find the charger in time to plug it in (stupid mistake that I never ever let happen usually). After I found it, plugged it in, and started it up again, the date and time were messed up on the computer. I reset them to normal and tried to connect to the internet using my old settings, but it hasn't connected.
I've tried a lot to try and fix it so far and it still won't connect. Other computers and devices (HP and Dell laptops, iPod touches, PS3) that my family have and use all work and connect to the internet fine.
I've tried to run the Network Diagnostics and after plugging in all of my settings and information, it says that it can't fix it. Next to it on the left, the Airport, Airport Settings, and ISP are all green...but the Network Settings is yellow and the Internet and Server are red.
I've deleted my internet settings and tried recreating them and that hasn't worked either. I have also tried the Assist Me portion to make a new connection - no luck there.
I've also tried resetting the Macbook Pro and the router (an Actiontec router for Verizon FIOS) multiple times and that hasn't worked either.
I unfortunately can't use Time Machine either because I don't have an external hard-drive and haven't set it up.
I just don't really know what to do at this point. Hopefully someone can help me out!

Same problem--hoping to get Apple's attention by throwing my hat in the ring with everybody else.
Things tried (now approaching 2 weeks of failure):
    Deleting "Airport" Connection, Adding/Restarting/Re-adding/etc.
    Archive Install
Erase & Install (full reinstall done by Genius)
    Card Replacement
    Bluetooth Replacement
    Zapping the PRAM
    Trying different connections/routers/locations/connection types/etc.
Visited Genius bar 4 times now.
Have been without the computer longer than I've been with it.
Trying to change over from a horrifically bad Dell to a refurb Mac worked once before...though I've come to believe: It's not the refurb, it's not the hardware, it's not the settings, it's not the router, it's not the install, it's not the associated software, it's not the connection, it's not the Super Moon that comes up tomorrow...It's a hardware issue as this has been happening since I opened the computer out of the box, and we have an identical computer running identical programs on an identical network with the identical updates and NO problems whatsoever--I'm assuming the innards may have been cheap'ed out somewhere to save a buck or a connector is faulty after a particular build date?
Full symptom list (in no particular order):
    Connection Timeout
    Connection Drop
    Not recognizing Airport
Card Recognition but endless connection time
    IP non-recognition
    Random re-connect
Indication of connection without transmitting/receiving data

  • My 2012 MacBook Pro fell and it now makes a clicking noise and shows a grey screen on startup. I'm afraid the hard drive is damaged. Is their anyway to still back up my hard drive even if it doesn't turn on all the way?

So my late 2012 MacBook Pro was sitting on my desk when the desk collapsed. The computer fell with it and I was quite scared at the moment, but thankfully I opened it up and it worked perfectly fine again.
I was later watching a YouTube video and pressed the back button. The screen then froze, and I could not force quit safari. Then this weird clicking noise started to happen. It was coming from the right of the trackpad. That's when I decided to force shutdown the computer with the power button.
I let it sit and then decided to turn it back on. The clicking noise then came back and there was just a blank screen on the boot up. Eventually a grey folder with a question mark started flashing on the screen. That was all it did so I decided to turn it off again.
I'm going to take it into the Apple store ASAP, but I'm curious if my hard drive is damaged and if I will need a new one, which would erase everything on my Mac. So I was wondering if there is anyway to back up the hard driver even if it doesn't boot up all the way, or turn on the computer all the way.
P.S. I have never backed up my hard drive so I wouldn't know what to do.

You may have damaged the HDD which is located in that spot. I would take it in for service.

  • MacBook Pro lost and now won't detect wifi in the house - HELP!

I'm using a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.  I'm staying at a friend's home which provides wifi via Shaw Cable.  We've been here for a week.  When we arrived the MacBook detected the wifi in the house and I was able to sign in without any difficulty.  Suddently, today in the middle of a web chat with a customer service provider, the connection was lost.  When I attempt to reconnect it detects other networks but not the one in the house.  I've rebooted the MacBook, rebooted the modem, turned airport on and off, deleteted all remembered networks (then rebooted), attempted to manually enter the network name and password all without success.
Other devices are connected: my iPad and a Windows PC.  I can connect the MacBook via ethernet and it works. So I know the connection and modem are working.
Most solutions I've see talk about resetting either the channel (to 11) or changing some other setting on the modem.  Since this is not my house or system, I don't have access to the modem settings.  Nor do those solutions make sense since I was connect for 6 days without any issues.
Does anyone have any idea how to get the MacBook to detect the network again?

Might be corrupted network preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
Turn off the base station for about ten seconds then turn it back on.
    Then try Wi-Fi.
Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.
