My MacBook Pro is admittedly old (2009) but suddenly very slow when using LR4

I don't hve the fastest computer, admittedly.  But dowloading raw pics cand take ten minutes per picture.  I am downloading to an external drive - is that the problem, or do I simply need to get a more modern/ faster computer?
I typically shoot in raw and export jpg versions..
thank you so much to anyone who steps forward to help answer my novcice questions

Thanks Butch,  I do have large sized images - in the 28 MP range.  And my laptop was 4GB with 256 memory.
To avoid clogging up my hard drive, I was keeping the photos - about 4,000 of them on a separate portable drive, a 1TB MyPassport for Mac drive with - indeed, a USB2.  So it sounds like the size of my images and this slow transfer is probably a big part of my problem.
I have just upgraded my macbook pro to a new 15" 8GB with a 256 SSD.  And I would like to set up properly.  I still would prefer not to have all the photos reside on my hard drive.  I also have an iMac with a much larger drive, so I guess I could keep the catalog and the photos on it instead - but I don't like to work in my basement space where the desktop is....thus why I've been using laptop.
Any suggestions would be most welcomed.  I also have a rather large inventory of previous photos that are in jpg format to be moved from iPhoto.  But that is a question for another day.  My immediate challenge is to figure out a workflow that is not too slow but does not eat up my hard drive.  Danielle

  • Macbook Pro connects to campus wifi but suddenly Safari/Mozilla will not load anymore.

I've had my MacBook Pro for a while now, it's still running Leopard, but that hasn't been a problem. I woke up yesterday morning and the Airport says its connected to the campus network, but when I open Safari/Mozilla/Mail, it will not load, and eventually says that the server will not respond.
I have connected to this network for over a year with no changes/problems
it literally happened overnight. I left my computer to sleep like I always do and when I woke it up in the morning, the internet wouldn't load.
internet works when I use an Ethernet cable
my roommate is sitting next to me with her newer macbook pro connected to the same network that is fucntioning just fine. So it's not the network (not that I could do anything to it if it was)
I've restarted, turned off Airport and turned it back on, deleted network preferences, put in the exact same IP address that my roommate has (hers is different from mine, but mine will not connect with the one she is connected to)...
    HELP?

I solved my issue and I believe it was router related. I have a router through Verizon and their Fios service. My router was old so I caled for a replacement. when I received thereplacement I switched it the router to only accept 802.11n and this did the trick. Problem solved, stupid router.

  • Macbook Pro 15" Early 2013 - Built in SSD very slow to boot.

    Hey Everyone,
Ok here is my problem.. I have a brand new BTO 2.7 GHz Retina MacBook Pro 15" (Early 2013 - ME665LL/A). It has an internal 500gb SSD.
Right out of the box, it took about 1 minute to boot... The Apple logo would appear and the spinning wheel below would spin for up to a minute before the welcome to Macintosh pre-configure window appears.
Figuring something had gone wrong with the OS install at manufacture, I booted into the recovery partition, reformatted the SSD and re-installed the OS. After the horrendous amount of time it took to initially download Mac OS 10.9 from iTunes, the install was successful.
I rebooted the Mac and the same problem… took around a minute to boot…
I gave up and installed all my software and set up the computer… Ive been using it now for about a month and honestly cant complain.. Its been very fast and works brilliantly: with one caveat. If I restart it or start it up from power - off status, it still takes around a minute to boot.
Ive booted up into verbose mode and discovered when Mavericks starts the initial driver loads, the computer hangs on the “AppleUSBMultitouchDriver”. It hangs for 30 seconds, then about a second later says “got response code 2 reinitialised driver” and then continues to load Mavericks successfully.
Knowing exactly what that AppleUSBMultitouchDriver driver does, I removed it from the System / Library / Extensions folder. I plugged in a USB mouse (as the trackpad will now fail to work) and rebooted…
Bingo! the computer started in about 4 seconds! - however no trackpad (as expected)
I re-installed the driver, rebooted and it took 1 minute again, but the trackpad worked again..
I did this a few times to make sure 100% it was this driver causing the problem, and it is…
so I need help.. anyone experienced this? know a fix?.. or do I have a faulty trackpad? (the trackpad works perfect btw)

  • My macbook works normally connected to the charger, but it is very slow when using the battery. What can I do?

I have a Macbook Pro 13'' 2011 OS X 10.9.4, and recently it started giving this problem, which the macbook works well while connected to the charger, but when i use it only with the batery it gets really slow. But in the report system of the macbook says that the battery is operating normally. It has alreary 822 cycles.

    Perform a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If there is no meaningful change, open System Information>Power and post the following from your MBP:
(Make certain that the charger is connected)
    Ciao.

  • My 15" macbook pro only occasionally manages to connect to my wifi when using router mac-filtering

Once in a while it manages to connect, but after putting the lid down it's gone again. No problem when router mac-filtering is off. All other units works -
I have a macbook, a 13" macbook pro, 3 iphones, a cpl of toshiba laptops running windows and all of them connect without any problems

No problem when router mac-filtering is off.
Then leave it off. It does nothing to protect you from intrusion.

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2010 i7 Hi-Res Screen VERY SLOW WIRELESS

Hi guys. I've just received my new MacBook Pro BTO Today, (i7, 500 7.200rpm and HI-Res Glossy Screen) I am deeply disappointed about the Wireless performance when compared to my old MacBook pro fall 2008 I was using 'till now. I have an AirPort Extreme with two different networks, 2.4 and 5Ghz.
With the old one I was always connected to the 5Ghz network linking at 300mbps. and full coverage.
With this new model I am getting just half the coveragae, and the connection drops to 144Mbps...
Why is this happening? Under BOOT Camp and Windows 7 64bit I get only 13mbps using the 5Ghz network. I am starting to be really **** off about how apple is really loosing it's quality. I am absolutely sure there will be nothing to do for me, as I guess is a hardware problem and we won't receive a "miraculous" software fix that will make everything run well.
I've just spent more than 2.200 euros and I am expecting premium performance, not way worse than what I had with my old Core 2 Duo from 2008...
    Please help...

    ok i try you explain
when you are allready in controll panel
find devices & sound devices, next device manager then you will see a list of yours devices like battery, processors, optical drives and network adapters when you extract network adapters you will see Broadband wireless N then click right click mouse then properities and settings & there is position called Country deafult set to AUTO change them to United States. Done !!!

  • My Macbook Pro locks up and i must manually restart it when using Itunes

My macbook pro has been locking up for the past month whenever i am using itunes and allow my computer to go "to sleep" on it's own. If i close the lid it doesn't lock up, if i change my setting so my mac doesn't go to sleep, it works fine. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it?

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.

  • I used Migration Assistant to copy data to an new MacBook Pro from an old via my Time Capsule. When asked if to inherit time machine history on the new Mac, I mistakenly said no. How do I go back one step to say yes?

There isn't enough space on the Time Capsule to create a separate backup of the data on the new MacBook. And I am reluctant to delete old backups of the old MacBook to create space to backup the new machine. This occurred about 3 weeks ago so the data on the two machines are now out of sync. If I start over by formatting the new MacBook and rerunning Migration Assistant to pull data from the Time Capsule, how do i preserve the last 3 weeks of data on the new MacBook, considering that I didn't keep track of which files changed in the last 3 weeks?

All the rest of the stuff is where it should be.  As best I can tell. I have been going through my programs one at a time to see what works.  With the change in the OS (Launchpad? What the heck?) I am finding a significant number of my old programs are not working. Some I have found upgrades.  But without a working mail program, the machine is pretty useless for work.
The Apple techies had me run through 3 hours of 'stuff' (holding down keys and restarting, etc, etc).  It still does not launch. I think we are waiting for a 'miracle', but I need to know now if they should just come get this piece of junk or if they really are able to find a solution in a timely manner.

  • Flickering intermittent lines on my display (Macbook Pro 15in Unibody mid-2009)

    HI all,
My MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2009 is suddenly displaying strange artifacts across the display - flickering lines of color (seems like red is most common). When this happens if i flex the machine body i can usually get it to disappear. Running an external display works totally fine, even while lines are appearing on the built in display. Another strange symptom - while this is happening sometimes, when i am dragging a file in Finder, it refuses to release from 'dragging' - ie... the OS believes i still have the mouse button pressed down (whether using a trackpad or external mouse) and continues to do so until a restart or sometimes a force quit.
I suspect the display cable (which i have reseated to the connector), though the most effective quick fix while this is happening is pressure on the bottom, middle of the case (which of course worries me).
I should add, tho it seems strange and might be circumstantial - this all started after installing mountain lion (from snow leopard) and the artifacts dont seem to happen when i am running in boot camp.
Hoping this can be resolved by some minimal DIY fix...
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi,
Not really a suggestion as such, but I have just installed a WD Scorpio Blue 500gb HDD myself. Unfortunately I've been having some issues with it and started a topic on this site to find an answer:

I am trying to import songs to my new macbook pro from my old computer using home sharing. Both computers say that home sharing is now on but neither show up in each other's library menu. I am logged on with the same apple id for both computers. and both are on a stable wireless connection

Logging into itunes store on each machine wth different Apple IDs is OK Autorising each others machines with the other Apple ID is OK. This is completley separate from Home Sharing
For Home Sharing to work you need to
File > Home Sharing > Create Home Share.
You need to select one of the two Apple IDs you are using and ENTER THIS ON BOTH MACHINES WHEN CREATING THE HOME SHARE.
    Home sharing will then work

i tried transferring my iphoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook pro (via external hard drive), but when i open the new iphoto, it seems to have transferred ALL images ever used on my old macbook. so i tried to just delete all those images so i could try a different approach to transferring, but the new iphoto won't let me do anything and every time i try to delete anything it crashes (since the image amount is so high).  please help!!
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
