My macbook pro is freezing after my screen changes color

My screen has been freezing a lot for some reason. I will be working on anything on the computer then all of a sudden the screen will become distorted and start to change colors then do a hard freeze. I have to hold down the power button and do a hard reset. Any suggestions on what this could be?

  • Macbook Pro constantly freezing after installing 10.9.4

So as the title says ever since I installed 10.9.4 my MacBook pro keeps freezing every few seconds.  When I boot it up in safe mode the screen flickers like crazy.  I also tried booting with the keys command alt p r and that didn't work either.  I just tried clicking on the reinstall os x button but that was going to take 72 hours, so I wanted to try this first.
This sort of thing constantly happens when I upgrade and very annoying.  If anyone has any suggestions, please I need help.
My MacBook is from mid 2009.
    Thanks!

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access the built in utilities to repair the startup disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery.

  • Macbook Pro sometimes freezes after opening iTunes.

I have had my Macbook Pro for a little over a year now and everything has been going great, except for every once in a while when I open iTunes, my Macbook Pro will freeze. I am then unable to do anything (use the trackpad, force quit, etc.). I have to wait at least 15 minutes before it settles down and I can use my MBP again. Here is the thing, while it is frozen it will unfreeze every 3-5 minutes for about a second and then freeze again. It is quite annoying! Please help! I do have the Bestbuy Accidental Damage and Protection Plan so if worse comes to worse I can just take it there. The only thing is, they would need to ship it away for 2-3 weeks and I am in the middle of a semester in Nursing School so I really need my MBP right now. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Here are a couple of things to try:
PRAM reset: power off the machine.
Then power up pressing option, command, P,R before the start up chime, hold the those keys down until the gear stops spinning.
If this doesn't help try a smc reset:
power off the mac, hold left side side shift key, control. option, poower up hold the keys till the gear stops.
If this doesn't work post back and we can try some other things.
    All the best

  • I install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro and freezing after waking up and is impossible restart

I install mountain lion on my macbook pro late 2009 and freezing after waking up and is impossible restart

Restart your mac in Safe Mode by holding down the 'shift' key while it powers up. You'll know if you've entered Safe Mode correctly if you see a progress bar underneath the grey Apple logo screen. Let go of the shift key when you see that, wait for the progess bar to complete then log in.
    After log in, go to
 > System Preferences... Users & Groups and remove everything from the 'Login Items' tab.
If you have any anti-virus software installed (Sophos, F-Secure, VirusBarrier, Mackeeper) uninstall it while in Safe Mode.
Restart your mac normally and test.
    Any improvement?

  • My Macbook Pro I5 freezes after sleep mode....help!!.

Please can somebody help me with this problem. I bought my new Macbook Pro three months ago, and this happened two times....I put Macbook in sleep mode and after that it freezes completely. I hear that it is still working but the screen goes just black. No button works and neither the mouse. Everytime I have to switch it off and on with the risk of damaging it. Is there a way to solve this problem?. Please let me know.

Take it in for service while it's under warranty.
+In the future please post in the right forum. This is the MacBook forum, but you state you have a MacBook Pro. There is a separate forum for MBPs.+

  • Macbook Pro keeps freezing after replaced the hard drive

    hi there,
recently, my macbook pro (15" 2.53 ghz, 4gb ram, 250gb hdd) hard drive crashed, having no warranty left, i went through all of the troubleshooting but nothing worked. i took it into futureshop and they tried the diagnostic and concluded that the hard drive crashed, and they told me to find a new hard drive in their store and theyll replace it for free (because it only takes a few minutes). i found a 500GB 2.5" SEAGATE hard drive in the store, and they fit it in for me. then i took it home and installed the O/S myself.
IT WORKED GREAT!!!!! but my other hard drive was too corrupt to save any of the data, so i had to start from scratch :/
after about a week or so, my mac gradually starting freezing up more and more, and i was worried because that was the initial problem i had.
its been about a month and a half since the first freeze, and im sick of it! about 4 or 5 times a day, the thing would just stop everything its doing, and the mac wheel would spin for about 30 seconds or so froze,, and then go back to normal.
whats confusing is that when im on skype and the mac freezes, i can still talk to the person from voice to voice, but EVERYTHING else just stops lik my itunes and the words im typing.
SO PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE ITS KILLING ME!!!!
i am willing to do anything or even replace my hard drive again just to fix this problem, so please your help would be greatly appreciated!
    THANKS !!!

    Hi r,
Why not bring it back to the place you bought the HD and have them test it? If it is the HD, many places will give you a new HD if it has been under a certain time period (often 30 days), otherwise you may have to send it in to Seagate for a warranty replacement.

  • Macbook pro still freezing after insurance repair, please help me

Hi there I got water damage on my 2012 MacBook pro, and my insurance covered it, so I got the logic board, adapter and keyboard  replaced. When it returned the computer kept freezing on start-up and I have to turn it off at the power button every time! Sometimes I can login and boot up
but it will randomly freeze at any point.
I sent it back to the insurance company who repaired it and they came back to me saying the technicians were unable to diagnose it
and that all the hardware had been checked and is running fine, so they told me to contact my supplier because its the software
that is at fault, however I didn't have these problems before I damaged my MacBook.
Could it be the software or the hardware, they are both sending me on a goose chase between them and I have a dissertation to do for September!
Please if anyone knows something that I can do to repair it, I have done disk utilities and that's coming up clean.
    Thanks Sloth

Thank you Csound1 for the reply, No I haven't I will try this later!
I asked because there are so many other people who ask questions for help on Apple discussions, and there is always lots
of helpful replies, and I only expected some advice on what I could do to resolve the issue if it is indeed a software problem, as there are lots of knowledgeable people on here, because the technicians at the repair company have no solution.

  • My Macbook Pro (2011) freezes after the apple login logo appears. The screen just goes white. Please Help

When i start up the laptop, its proceeds normally with the chime and apple logo, but after that the screen goes white and nothing happens. You can hear the sound from within the machine become louder too.. Sometimes it proceeds to login fully but then there are times that it freezes whilst i am using it. It is currently working now as im typing this.. Please help

I would first try booting into Safe Mode then restarting normally. This will be a longer startup than normal in both safe mode and normal boot. That is normal.
I would then repair your drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If the problem is not resolved, then create a new admin user account. Set this account for auto-login. Then try restarting the computer.

Hey, I recommend backing up all your files manually via USB hardrive and then format your mac's hardrive, here's a link for instructions on how to format your mac's hdd: http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-format-your-macs-hard-drive--mac- 53986
Also I recommend downloading the latest Mac OS X via the app store. The reason why I've recommended to back up all your files and programs manually and install a clean and new os is because when you put your data on manually, you significantly reduce the chances of the problem happening again and it looks like you have something inside your os that's slowing everything down. You'll also have the latest updates and support if you download the latest mac os x. You should also back up your Mac via time machine as well so you have a image of your OS. I recommend installing a SSD drive inside your MacBook as they make a huge difference in performance, your computer will preform almost instantly, it only takes 7 seconds for your mac to boot into the os and everything else you do is pretty much instantly. They can be a little expensive but they're coming down in price and they're with it! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT480M500SSD1-2-5-inch-480GB-Internal/dp/B00BQ8R HJ2
I've had the same problem before and I hope that helps.
    Good luck

  • MacBook Pro short freeze after sleeping

    Hi,
When I wake my computer, it freezes at the login screen (I can actually move the mouse, but I can't type and there is the loading wheel). After 1 min I can finally logon. If anyone knows what to do!
    Thanks

Is this on power supply or battery? Go to system preferences, this could be a conflict betwen energy saver settings. Check like this, in energy saver on power supply check what is clicked and times. Then switch to battery, check what is clicked and times.  Now trying the power supply and check all the settings on batt, & PSU. See if changing these settings changes, set them the way you want. Reboot   Hope this helps

  • 13" Macbook pro random freezing after upgrading hard drive.

    i have a 2010 mbp 13" 2.4
I upgraded the hhd from the 250 to a 320 5400 RPM drive i cleared the cache did a clean install of osx 10.6 grabbed all the updates and then rolled my time machine to restore all my files.
But now it randomly freezes for about 4-7 seconds. It's extremely annoying and i can't figure out why. Short of a clean install any ideas on what might fix this?
    Thanks

The AHT does test the graphics chips. Run the extended version and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. Also, there may be a crash log in Console. Try to run something processor intensive so the Mac freezes, and then run the AHT. Heat could be a factor.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and bring in your Mac for evaluation. They would probably have a more comprehensive hardware test they could run. If you get any error codes, bring those along.
It sounds like you could have some sort of hardware problem here. Since you are under warranty, it might be time to let Apple diagnose and fix it. It sounds like you may have had video issues during the first week of ownership with the original hard drive, and these may actually be independent of the hard drive.
    Good luck!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • MacBook Pro random freezing after 10.6.8 update

    Hello,
I've been having an issue with my 17" MBP (late 2010 model).  Ever since the 10.6.8 update, I can work for a random amount of time (usually 30-45 minutes) and then get the "spinning pinwheel of death" with the only recourse to manually power off by holding down the power button.  The machine has run flawlessly since purchase up to this point.
Apple Hardware Test reports no faults, and I have ran the Disk Utility and had it check for and repair permissions, but the problem still persists.
I originally suspected a hardware fault, but yesterday I downgraded to 10.6.3 by reinstalling from the DVD and the problems went away (I was able to use the machine for severall hours without any trouble).  Then last night I decided to try Software Update back to 10.6.8 and voila! The problem re-surfaced this morning.
I am unable to use iPhoto or Quicktime since rolling back to 10.6.3, and the Mac App Store obviously won't load either.
Does anyone have any suggestions? A Mac-saavy coworker suggested firmware or graphics card driver updates, but I'm not sure what to do.
    Thanks in advance.

Ok, I've since downgraded to 10.6.3 so I can get work done today, but here's the output anyway:
    com.vmware.kext.vmx86
    com.vmware.kext.vmci
    com.vmware.kext.vmioplug
    com.vmware.kext.vmnet
I've heard of issues with 10.6.8 and Parallels, but I'm not aware of any with the VMWare Fusion I'm running (version 3.1.3)
