My macbook pro is probably only 2 months old and there is a buzzing/grinding noise coming from the left side of the laptop every time I open it.  It may buzz 5 times in a span of 30 seconds then not make the noise the remaining time that it is open.  I have read that it may have to do with my fan or HD.  I am under apple care for a good amount of time but am wondering if this is a mjor issue.  I would not be able to get to an apple care center in the near future due to being at school.  Should I be worried or will it last by the time I am home in 2 months.

Sounds like the disk in your MBP is accessing data on wake up
If you are still concerned you can take it into the Apple Store where they can hear it to be sure

Guys, i am actually trying using a solution provided by the article shared by dominic23,
It says "Another option is to get an ionizer to help the atmosphere in the workplace be more conductive and pull charges away from contact surfaces, including yourself."
So in my home, we have such device that could clean the air using ion, and i am using it in my room...
Result: BANG!!! The electric shock on my macbook has gone!! I don't really care about physics but somehow it works! You guys should give it a try.
    Thanks again dominic23

  • My macbook Pro Retina is 5 months old. I have nothing but a cursor and a black screen. What gives???

I have nothing but a cursor and a black screen. It's only 5 months old! What gives here? This is my first Mac and I'll tell you, they aren't impressing me.

Did you get it fixed at the store? I have this same problem my macbook pro that I bought at the end of December. I am not impressed and very unhappy that I now need to drive to some store to fix it. I tried to get it fixed through the phone but alas it still does not work.
After spending as much money as I did for this thing that I've only had for less than three months and used maybe less than 10 times, I'm slightly upset. I need to have this working by Saturday.

  • Motherboard broken Macbook Pro Sept 2012 (13 months old)

My MacBook Pro is just over a year old, arrived Oct 2012: I have never dropped it and always took great care of it e.g. letting battery fully die before recharging etc. Two weeks ago the when I restarted it the grey loading circle screen came on and wouldn't log in. I ran disk repairs and reset the PRAM. Still wouldn't work so I gave it into a regular computer store to be repaired. They initally thought the harddisk was broken but now they're telling me that the Motherboard is gone. How can this be? It's only 13 months old!

I would ask for it back and do one simple test. Remove the original hard drive and connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and run the system from that drive. If you still get errors buy a new hard drive and do the same, connect it to the computer with a SATA to USB adapter and install OS X on it and run the system from there.
If the system runs fine with the original drive it is not the drive or the logic board (Motherboard) that is the problem.
It is more than likely the cable going from the drive to the logic board that is the problem. If the system doesn't run fine with the original but does with a new drive with a clean install of OS X then it was the original drive.
You would expect a Mac computer costing much more than a Windows PC with the exact same hardware would last longer. But the simple fact is any electronic device, no matter who brands/sells it or how much it costs, can fail at any time.

  • MacBook Pro reverts to 9-month old recent files when I restart

My MacBook Pro is, in many ways, stuck on November 3.
Whenever I restart it, it loses all records of recent activity. The date and time are still correct, and the files I've created still exist, but other things are stuck in the past.
When I look at recent files, it only has files I've opened since starting up my computer and files from November. When I use a program like Logic that opens the last file I was working on, it's always the file I had open back then. When I open Mail, it goes to an old email. When I open iTunes, it starts on a playlist I never use and makes me agree to terms again. It also always tells me there's an update I need to download. I added a VPN status to the top right menu, but it goes away. You get the idea.
I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, hoping that would solve the problem, but no luck. I tried repairing permissions and resetting PRAM, but neither worked. Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

My brand new MBP15 is my first Mac after 10 horrible Windows years - it's great, but it has the same problem:
On the first day I optimised the battery following instructions exactly.
Yesterday and the day before I was travelling, and in the hotel I plugged in the Magsafe and worked for about 2 hours. Then I looked at the power controls and wondered why the battery does not charge. The menu symbol showed the little power plug, but not the 'charging' symbol. The battery stayed at about 30%, no change at all. The little LED on the Magsafe plug was neither green nor orange... I looked a second time: it was green, but very, very, very dim. I left it plugged in all night and did not sleep well...
Next day, I was in a meeting, afraid to run out of power during a presentation. I plugged it in - and it charged. Everything was fine. On my way home I worked, using the battery. In the evening I came home, plugged it in - and it did not charge.
    Today, similar again.
So, I went to my Apple dealer. He recommended an Apple-CTRL-P-R-Restart, three times. No change. We checked the power adapter with a second MBP. It works fine. We checked the battery. It is charged in the other MBP. We put a different battery into my MBP - and it does not charge. So, we agreed that if this stays the same in the next days I have to send my brand new Mac to repair.
Well, maybe this is a known problem and can be solved in a different way. Any ideas what I can do?
(While I am writing this, the little LED on the Magsafe plug is green, but very, very, very dim, and the battery is charged. It did not charge while I was out for four hours.)

  • Macbook pro 15 inch only 1 year and a half.

So recently my macbook pro went for apple retail shop to check for the problem encounter by my mbp. And they found out that my logic board is the problem. It cost RM2250, which is very expensive. It just out of warranty for few months and this problem occurs. Can i make any report about this situation? Bought a 5k laptop that couldnt last more than a year. I never drop it before, and always use it with a cooling pad!

You can always try but don't expect any compensation. If you extended your warranty an additional 2 years 6 months ago you'd be covered.

  • Macbook Pro - speaker socket only outputting left audio

I have recently noticed that my MacBook Pro is only outputting audio to my left sided speaker. The following are the steps I have already taken to troubleshoot:
Plugged my iPod into the speakers and both (left and right) speakers work perfectly
Plugged two separate sets of headphones into the speaker socket on my MacBook and on both occasions I am only getting audio out of the left headphone
Checked the output sound settings (System Preferences>Sound>Output) and the balance slider is set to the central position.
The MacBook Pro is around 4 years old and operates of OS X 10.8.2.
Any further trouble shooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    James

Playing games will usually cause the computer to get very hot, and the longer you play the hotter it gets. To deal with this the fans ramp up eventually having to run at full speed to try and cool the computer. If the computer is not adequately ventilated and/or is used in a hot environment, then there's a potential for a thermal shutdown.
Obviously, heat is not in the best interest of your speakers.

  • My Macbook Pro's speed is very slow and frustrating.

My Macbook Pro is about 3 years old and has gotten incredibly slow. I have some movies, pictures, and a bunch of PDF files saved to it but it doesn't seem like that should slow the computer that much. What should I do to speed it up? Is a full Factory reset in order? And, if so, would that fix the issues I am having? Any suggestions are appreciated.

A factory restore erases all your personal data on the disk and hopefully you have backed up everything to an external source just in case.
Not enough free space on the disk can slow your Mac down.
Control click your MacintoshHD icon on your desktop then click Get Info.
    You'll see:  Available and Capacity
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

Clifton I must disagree with you on the above statement. It is my opinion and experience that you should never connect the camera directly to any computer, Mac Windows Whatever.
It is always best to Remove the memory card from the camera and put it in a card reader, whether an external reader or one built into the computer, to copy images from the card.
Hi Shootist. I would be interested in hearing some reasoning on this. I almost always use a USB cable to connect my camera to the MBP for transferring pictures, and have moved about 30,000 this way over the last 6 years since my photography went digital. Recently, on the rare occassions when I have only a few to transfer and I was too lazy to go for the cable, I have used the card reader; about half those times I have difficulty getting the MBP to recognise the card. I find I have to press the card very hard into the slot for it to be recognised.
My rationale is quite possibly wrong, but I feel that the USB connectors are more robust and hard-wearing than the flimsy connectors on an SD card. Also, I haven't measured it, but I think the data transfer is faster with the cable. (I just came across this test, which reports noticeably faster transfer for cable than built-in card reader, but the computer was a PC)
Chiara, sorry for hijacking your thread.

    Your help is really appreciated"

Thanks a lot i followed the instructions for safe mode (i found out that i was pressing the C button after restarting) i did whats written there but the repair couldn't be performed so in addition i needed to re-formate the HD so i erased the volume and then repaired the disk--> quite disk utilities --> start the installation from the installation DVD.

The way something "feels" is very subjective.  We would need to know your actual temps.  You can install the free iStat Pro widget which is available as a download directly from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Let us know what CPU temps you're seeing at the time you feel your machine is hot.  As you indicated your CPU usage was only 10%, that would imply that you already know that heavy CPU usage would be one cause for your machine to be running on the warm side... but that doesn't seem to be the cause here.
