My macbook pro is running really slow, is it the memory?

I'm using a Mac OS X, version 10.7.5, and my storage has 277 gb free left out of 500gb. What should i do to make my macbook run faster? It's running really slow, (even my itunes lags when playing a song). Please help, thank you!

You could try permission repair.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
You could also try PRAM reset
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If those two don't work go to Apps>Utilites>Activity Monitor and look at your processes. At the top click where it says my processes and change it to All Processes. Look and see if there is anything that is eating up an abnormal amount of memory.

You have nearly run out of disk space.  Either purchase a larger one or start cleaning out the one you have?

  • My macbook pro is running really slow after upgrade to Mavericks

my macbook pro is running really slow after upgrading to Mavericks....any ideas?

OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
The above link is not very useful, so if it doesn't help read on.
There are many potential reasons that a Mac may be running slower than expected, but more information is required to begin troubleshooting, much more.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding. It is premature to conclude your hard disk is failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

my MacBook Pro is running really slow - how can I fix it?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

FWIW: I just looked over a friend's daughter's 2010 MacBook Pro unibody (2.66ghz) that was slow as molasses in Winter. She has been using it for her work at U.C. Berkeley for three months. After running Mac Janitor I repaired permissions with Disk Utility and there were thousands of files that needed to be re-set. After that it ran the way it should.
I was pretty surprised because when I repair permissions on my Mac Pro tower practically nothing gets changed.

  • My Macbook Pro is running really slow and programs keep crashing

I have a 15" MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 Model) that is doing my head in, as it runs really slow most of the times as soon as I open more than one program (especially if I use Excel or Word of course). I ran the EtreCheck and the result is below, hopefully this will help some of you guide me in the right direction?
Most of my memory (over 200GB) is used up by "OTHER", any idea what that could be and how I could easily free up space?
    Thanks a lot

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • My Macbook Pro started running really slow

This week my Macbook Pro started running super slow, taking ages to open programs and giving me the color wheel alllll the time. I've never had problems like this before! I'm not running many applications or doing anything unusual but it's just running extra slow. Once or twice it has also totally gone to sleep while I was in the middle of using it, and I had to wake it back up. It has also been getting really hot and the battery life seems worse...! This is all new, I'm using my computer just as I always have but it suddenly has issues.
The only thing it has been doing for a while is sometimes the screen will go blue - this either corrects itself within a few seconds or if I close my Macbook and then reopen it, the screen is back to normal. This is very rare though and I don't know if it's related to the slowness problem.
What can I do to fix this??

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. The "etrecheck" output is irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • My MacBook Pro is running really slow.

Hey. My MBP has been running very slow for some time, and its becoming very frustrating. Straight after I start it up it starts running slow...I have 'Memory Clean' (not sure whether this is helpful or not) and as soon as i my Macbook loads it tells me i have less than 25MB of RAM available, so i have to use the clean memory function, yet this doesn't really seem to release much RAM.

  • MacBook Pro suddenly runs really slow

I have a mid-2012 13" non-retina macbook pro that I bought September 22, 2013 and Friday it started running really slow, like it takes 5 minutes for it to startup and two minutes to log in. I opened up the console and I get all these errors and I've reset the SMC and PRAM and I've also restored from time capsule backup and still no use. What do I do? I don't care if I have to wipe my hard drive since all my stuff is backed up to iCloud and my Time Capsule. Here's what comes up in the console: 4/6/14 12:03:54.000 PM kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR F1Mn kSMCBadArgumentError(0x89) fKeyHashTable=0x0xffffff801e1fd000
4/6/14 12:03:43.189 PM awacsd[63]: InnerStore GetWakeInfoForZone: no external port for 1980574548.members.btmm.icloud.com.
And they're a continuous string of errors. I've also performed a disk utility and nothing came up in red.

Well you're helpful lol. I contacted them twice and they weren't of much help. I found out what was causing the issue. I had the program MacFanControl installed and when I went to uninstall it, I just dragged it to the trash can and emptied it. I went to the website where I got it and followed the instructions on how to remove it and now its running like it did before.

  • My macbook pro is running really slow i have reset it to factory and it's still slow what can i do ?

Macbok is running really slow i have rest it back to factory yet its still really slow and creating alot of noise ? i dont know what to do at this momment

How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.

  • Macbook Pro is running really slow

Hey...I have a Macbook Pro that I bought in August and today it just started randomly running very slow. I have never had the problem before, and it started around midday today after I came back from using it in class. A couple of things I should note:
    1) when it started happenening, I had only 6 GB of my 60 GB Harddrive. I deleted 9 GB to bring it up to 15 GB and I restarted the computer. Multiple times. This did nothing.
    2) opening finder goes really slowly, and it takes a long time to access my "movies" section in particular. but this isn't nearly my largest section...music is.
    3) sherlock, safari, and ichat are all very slow and they are the only 3 programs that I am running.
    4) I have used an adware finder called MacScan and that didn't do much at all.
Does anybody have a suggestion to help me out?
    also:
    5. I haven't dropped it.
    6. It just sits on my desk most of the time and doesn't get too hot. Yesterday I brought it to class (doesn't happen often) and I was very careful with it.
Here is a summary of the tests i ran:
The hardware test, done be resetting and holding D, found no problems. I ran both the normal and extensive tests.
The disk utility that was found by resetting the computer and holding C was not run because I got to a screen that set "preparing to install Mac OSX" and in order to not lose my files, I shut down the computer and started up.
I ran the disk utility that can be found with sherlock and got this. It said all permissions repaired, but the computer is still runnning slow:

The problem with getting this low in free space is often not the fact you're this low but the damage that gets done due to fragmentation. Even by deleting 9GB you probably haven't helped matter as that would have been freed up all over the place in lots of small pieces.
If you have a cloning tool and an available external, bootable hard drive, then you might want to clone your system to the external drive, boot from the external, erase your internal drive and then clone back to your internal drive. This will fix your fragmentation issues is it's the cause of the slowness.
Before doing that, does booting using a Safe Mode boot…

I tried the Disk Utlity to see if there was something wrong but it went through the process and it was fast for the first 10 minutes then went slow agian!! I am not computer savvy by any means but I know there is programs running in the background, with that said though I have no idea what they are or anything else but it has never ran this slow or not sent mail out like this before!! anybody have any suggestions that I would understand!!

    Have a look here...
    macworld.com/mac-troubleshooting-what-to-do-when-your -computer-is-too-slow.
    Basically...
    1)  Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 15 to 20 GB
    2)  And adding more RAM is always a prudent move... (4GB of RAM is a minimum for Mavericks... 8GB at least would be better.)
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
    Go to http://www.crucial.com
It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Those sites also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...
