My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive

Hello,
I need you help with this one. My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive. In the System Profiler (under FireWire) the drive is listed as:
FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
Unknown Device:
Manufacturer: Unknown
Model: Unknown
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Unknown
Can anyone help me to correct this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!
Nat

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!
Thanks,
Nat

    iTunes > preferences > advanced.
point iTunes media folder location to the external
on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked
    okay out of preferences
highlight the content to be moved (i.e. the movies) in iTunes and right-click
select consolidate files from the pop-up menu
wait for the process to finish
when done, you may delete the original files from your boot drive. you may also want to point iTunes media folder location back to your local iTunes folder.

no. airport express does not support the airdisk feature. you'd need an airport extreme (or time capsule) for that.

  • How to backup MacBook Pro without AirPort Time Capsule or External hard drive

How to backup MacBook Pro without AirPort Time Capsule or External hard drive

This is crude but if you need a work around, just plug the USB drive directly into the iMac.. copy the files to it.. then plug it into the TC.
You also do not need to use the TC as an intermediary between your iMac and MBP.. just turn on sharing in the computer.. so you can directly copy files from one to the other.. Macs have public access directory preconfigured for each user account.
As far as mounting the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to server.. and type.
    AFP://TCname or TCipaddress
Where TCname is the actual name of the TC.. I strongly recommend you follow SMB network rules.. ie if your TC has a name like
    Fred Blog's Time Capsule 2445566.
It is too long.. it has spaces and it has non-alphanumeric characters.
    Shorten it to FredTC
No spaces no characters that are NOT alphanumeric.
TCIPaddress is simply the standard IP.
You can also use CIFS://TCname which according to the article forces the connection back to SMB1 rather than SMB2 which as usual is broken.
But I would definitely use AFP if possible. I cannot understand the decision to move to SMB as standard.

    Hi cterry66,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you would like to reset the user account password on your computer but do not know the original password. If you set up your Apple ID with that user account, you can use that Apple ID to reset your OS X user password. Please use the information provided in the attached article to complete the process.

  • MacBook pro does not recognize my WD external hard drive anymore

I use TIme Machine on my WD external hard drive. Everything was working great up until about a month ago. My MacBook Pro does not recognize my external hard drive anymore...I have done nothing differently than usual. I did search in previous discussions and tried rebooting both the hard drive and the computer.
The USB port is fine as it does recognize another external hard drive and also pen drives....Please help! I haven't backed up in a month and need to figure out how to get this to work soon. Should I call WD?

Does the WD drive show in Disk Utility?
Many times, a USB port simply cannot provide the power a hard drive needs. It is not uncommon for any electric motor to draw more power as it ages. A drive that worked before can stop working when it gets older because age has made it tak more power than any USB port can supply. There are a couple of cheap things to try:
    1) A "Y" USB cable---two plugs go to the computer and one to hte drive, giving a power boost.
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
    2) a POWERED USB hub. That takes the power delivery burden off the USB port so it can deal with data.
WD bare drives are fine but their enclosures are not very Mac-friendly. One thing that has reported helping is to get rid of the proprietary formating that WD puts on their drives. If you don't have to share the drive with a Windows computer, use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the drive to Macintosh Extended Journaled.

  • New Macbook pro won't connect to older external hard drive

My old MacBook suddently died after seven years. It contained a lot of data that I had backed up on an external hard drive using TimeMachine and transferring files to it. When I hooked it up to my new MacBook Pro (released mid-2012 I think), I couldn't seem to connect. Any ideas why?

does it show up in disk utility at all?
Did you have a second NON time machine copy of vital data as should be the case?

  • Why does my macbook pro crash when I connect my external hard drive?

When I connect my external hard drive to my macbook pro (with fire wire) it crashes my computer... Any thoughts or help??

Thanks for the response. I tried both methods with the same end result.
I'm in safe mode now. It doesnt show up as being plugged in. It worked fine when connected with the USB-I went to disk utilities and repaired the disk.
I tried to plug in with the firewire, again and it shut down my computer..
    Any other suggestions?

  • MacBook Pro running Lion constantly spins up external hard drives while sleeping

My MacBook Pro 8,2 running Lion 10.7.2 constantly spins up its external hard drives (one Firewire 800 and two USB) while sleeping. Is there any way to prevent this? The drives will spin down for a minute or so and then spin back up, which is incredibly annoying. Have to shut the computer down to prevent this.
Thanks. I’m happy to provide more details if needed.

  • Upgrading to Mavericks wrecked my MacBook Pro & now it only works when external hard drive is plugged in

So I tried to upgrade to Mavericks today and it failed (same error as in this post which seemed to be a common problem). It wouldn't let me repair the disk, and after trying all sorts I rebooted my computer in recovery mode - it wouldn't let me reinstall Lion because the hard drive was apparently locked and I could see no way around this. So I decided to restore from a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive and that worked okay, except my MacBook now only works when the external hard drive is connected. If I remove the external hard drive, I'm back to square one as it still won't let me reinstall Lion as the HD is locked!
I have no idea what's going on. HELP!

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • I am using a Mac Book Pro. Now I am trying to read a LaCie 1 TB external hard disk. The MacBook Pro hangs while reading the LaCie external hard disk.

I am using a MacBook Pro. I have my movies stored on a Lacie 1 TB external USB harddrive. (42 Movies in HD - 538 Gb in use). When I try to read the LaCie external drive, my MacBook Pro is "hanging". Only a "hard reboot" helps to get my MacBook Pro up and running again. The MacBook Pro starts to read the drive, but half way he "stucks". I can read the LaCie drive without any problem om my windows machines, so the LaCie drive is O.K. Anyone familiar with this problem?

The drive is formatted NFTS, otherwise the drive can not handle large files under Windows. And yes, I can see the drive in Disk Utility.
I can even see the files (partly) untill my system is hanging.

  • MacBook Pro, Aperture 1.5.2. & External Hard Drive

I am a new user to Aperture and have the latest update 1.5.2. working from a MacBook Pro. As my Photo stock library exceeds 600g and has a huge index of subjects / files I set up my Aperture library on a Lacie 1tb HD. I could also be using another computer other than my normal MBP making it also necessary to edit my stock from a library set up on the HD, not the computer. However when I attempted to use Aperture from the computer and work offline, the computer gained control completely and no longer referred to the HD, will not download incoming photos from external sourse to the HD and will only file these in the computer's Aperture library. I attempted to refer the library back to the HD through the preference settings but this appears to be ignored. Any ideas on how I resolve this dilemma and set up to maximise workflow? I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks Mr. B

Chris, Thanks once again for your help but it will
take me about a month to recieve that book order,
being in darkest Africa. I would really like to get
moving before this as i have a few deadlines to
    meet.
I believe that it is in v 1.5.2 where the off line
use and Relocate Masters etc. has been brought out.
Just mayeb what i need to know is not yet in the book
you suggest. i have several books already on order
and will certainly look into getting this one. If
possible, could you suggest a simple set up
configuration where it is possible to: a) work on
projects where the masters are loocatecd off line and
therefore one would need to download onto the
computer before taking off on ones journey away,
without confusing the version links? I see a real
duplication occurrance about to happen here.
    b) once returned to base, what does one delete, as
in the computer's files of the work files one took on
    journey?
    c) when first downloading photos, either from camera
or transferring from other hard drive and in order to
make linking with masters easy, would one do this
first through Aperture and then Relocate masters onto
the ext HD. Thanks again. MB
DO you have any further comments to add on parts b) anad c). These are areas which are still a bug in the systerm of using Aperture on the road and being confident of not having duplicates etc.

  • Macbook Pro won't connect to Maxtor external Hard drive

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro curently running 10.5.8.  I am about to update to 10.6 (about time... I know).  I have a Maxtor external HD that I had time machine set up on.  Last time I backed up was a long time ago (I've moved a couple times, so the HD got burried in boxes).  Now, I can't get my computer to recognize the disk at all plugged into my USB (don't have a firewire cable).  It won;t recognize it in Time Machine even though it had been backed up many times before, and it won't show up at all in Disk Utility.
I need to update to 10.6 but I really don't want to lose EVERYTHING in some sort of freak accident during the switch.  My own fault for not updating more often, but it doesn't quite matter if the computer won't recognize the disk

does it show up in disk utility at all?

  • Macbook Pro for HD video -memory and external hard drive questions?

    Hi!
I am a Macbook user, but I plan to purchase a Macbook Pro since I am now doing a lot of HD (not HDV) video editing. I live outside of the U.S. and cannot call the Apple Store, so was wondering if anyone can provide advice on the forum.
I'm interested in either the 15-inch: 2.53GHz or 15-inch: 2.66GHz. is there a big difference in speed between these?
-Is the 4GB memory the MBP comes with enough for HD video editing purposes, or would I opt for the 8GB? (here prices becomes a bit of an issue)
    - Is the 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm sufficient or would I upgrade to the 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm [Add $50.00]
-I want to purchase an external firewire drive to store my media on-does anyone know if the G-Raid 500 would be good? Portability is a big issue for me since I travel very often.
Thank you all so much for your help!!

I looked at the 15inch and 17inch but chose the 17inch - and I am a filmmaker. I too travel on location extensively and usually carry a 15inch due to size-weight - but the 17inch is much better for HD. The video card and screen resolution in the 17inch is much better than than the 15inch but what clinched it for me was the 17inch has a CF reader and the 15inch only has a small SD card reader.
Most video HD cams are shooting straight to CF cards now.
I also upgraded to the 7200 rpm drive - a wise choice for $50 extra.
Yes 4G ram will run Final Cut OK - but if you go from FCP to motion a lot then you will need 8G.

  • My macbook pro will not recognize my Seagate external hard drive.

Last night it was working fine, but I noticed that  every time I plug in my hard drive there is a bunch of files in my trash bin.  I tried to delete them and my trash bin goes into the negatives and never stops.  I tried dragging those files from the trash bin into the shredder on mackeeper, but that did not work.  I then gave up on trying to delete the files and went to bed.  I woke up and now my hard drive does not work.  It still glows but nothing comes up on the screen.  I plugged it in my brothers computer which is windows and it recognized it (It started to install the hard drive on his computer, so I stopped it).  I also recently removed programs/ applications like ichat, garage band,  and other applications that I never used on my computer.  Just wondering what I need to do to get this to work because all my school stuff is on the hard drive.  And I tried a new cable and it still does not show up.  Please help.
I guess never mind, literally 25 seconds after I posted this message, all of the sudden it recognized my hard drive.  I hope it does not take this long for it to recognize it everytime I use my computer.

I suggest you delete Mackeeper and do not use the Mackeeper uninstaller.  Look at some of the discussions on this forum and you will understand that it is at best a nuisance and at worst malware that has a negative impact on the performance of your MBP.  Here are instructions that you may use to get rid of it:
