My MacBook Pro shuts off during startup

When startup the apple logo appears, a spinning gear, and a bar partily filled(10%)
The bar disappears then reappears and disappears when the bar disappears  the MacBook Pro shut off
(Haven't updated macbook since bought in 2011)

Yimajatl,
boot your MacBook Pro from your grey Mac OS Install DVD. When the desktop appears, select Utilities from the menu bar, and then select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Are you able to reach your login screen now?

  • MacBook Pro shuts off during video conversion/heavy CPU usage

I'm not quite sure how to troubleshoot this, and I'm curious if anyone has experienced this, or has any suggestions.
Whenever I do a video conversion, about 10 minutes in, my MacBook Pro just shuts off. Some examples of the kind of video conversions I'm doing are, exporting an EyeTV recording to iTunes, or converting a video already in iTunes to AppleTV or iPod/iPhone. Both of these examples are using Quicktime, I'm assuming?
I did a clean reinstall of Tiger, and the problem was still there. And, after upgrading to Leopard, the problem is still there.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Could be due to overheating. Install iStat Menus, show CPU use, CPU temp, and fan speed in the menu bar, and start converting. If CPU use is pegged, fans are at 6000 rpm, and temp rises to/above 90 C, then your MBP shuts off, that's the issue.
There are some early models of MBPs that had too much thermal paste, leading to excessive heat build up.

  • MacBook Pro shuts off immediately after startup

My MacBook Pro shuts off immediately after I start it. It gets to the Apple logo on the grey screen and it shuts down. I have tried launching it in safe mode, resetting the NVRAM settings, nothing works.. Has anyone witnessed similar problems ? What can I do to fix this problem ? Help is gladly appreciated.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook Pro shut off and won't turn on or charge?

I purchased my Macbook Pro August 1st 2012 at Best Buy and in April it shut off for no reason and it wouldn't charge. Apple replaced the battery cable and my Macbook worked for a couple of weeks, then in May same thing happened and Apple replaced the MLB, a couple days later the same thing happens and Apple replaces the Magsafe board with cable. Then a few days later specific keys on the keyboard stop working and Apple replaces the topcase with keyboard. Now 120 days later my Macbook Pro shuts off and won't charge for the 4th time. My Macbook is now out of warranty but I don't think I should pay since this is the 4th time my MacBook Pro shuts off for no reason and won't charge. Yes I already tried reseting the smc, still didn't work. What could be causing this and is there anyway Apple will cover this since is the 4th time it shuts off for no reason?

Call Apple Customer relation and explain your situation. Have your receipts for the work that was already preformed on it and ask them to replace it with a new unit.

  • Issues With MacBook Pro Shutting Off

I have been having troubles the past couple of days with my MacBook Pro shutting off when running on battery power.
MacBook Pro OSX 10.4.11. 2.16 Intel Core Duo. 1 G Ram.
I will have plenty of battery charge and then "poof", computer just goes black and has no power. It does turn back on, but gets annoying. Everything runs fine when plugged into the wall.
Anyone have any ideas of what may be causing this?
    Thanks.

How old is your machine? This sort of thing is covered under warranty (or apple car). I got a new one about a year ago that way. Apple WILL ask for number of charge cycles. Believe it or not, high numbers can be good because it says that you have actually been using the battery and it's not just dead from sitting unused.
It sounds like you have a dead cell. Your battery is separated into several compartments. Your charge looks fine until that cell is actually needed. At that point, CLUNK. Nothing works.

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and now my macbook pro shuts off instead of sleeps everytime i close the screen and needs to be re-booted when screen is re-opened. Any one had the same issue and any known fixes?

Check System Preferences --> Energy Saver and make sure you do not have the sleep sliders set to "Never".
This may pertain to either or both Battery and/or Power Adapter tabs in System Preferences.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro shut off when I close it?

When I am done using my MacBook Pro I would usually just shut the lid and the MacBook would then go into sleep mode. In other words later when I pick it up and open it the MacBook screen will light and I can begin using it immediately. However, lately when I shut the lid the MacBook will shut off completely and I will need to push the power button to turn it on again. I am curious as to what may be causing this? Any help or knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

  • Macbook Pro Shuts Down During or Soon After Start-Up

My macbook pro shuts down after booting up. Sometimes it makes it to the desktop, but sometimes just to the gray screen. Also, at desktop, it asks if I want to shut down. Is something pressing on the shutdown button? Any help on what to do?

  • MacBook Pro shuts off when unplugged.

For the past week my MacBook charger has been not functioning correctly. It only charged my computer when it was the the right position. I figured there was a short in the wires and was just going to pick up a new one. Last night however, the charger stopped working completely. I tried moving it around for about an hour until i just gave up and figured there was no hope. As soon as i shut the MacBook though, the charger light came on, but again when i moved the wire too much, it turned off. As soon as the charger light turned off, so did my MacBook. And i thought it was weird since there was still about 20% battery life, and it turned back on fine, but the date got reset to the year 2000 and it made me put in my wifi info again, which has never happened. I shrugged it off and really didnt think much of it though until it happened again today. This afternoon i plugged my Macbook in and it was and the charger was working fine after i found the right position to put it in. I let it charge for a few hours while i was out, and when i got home i used my Macbook for about two hours before i decided to move the Mac, causing my charger to move and stop working. And my MacBook imediately shut off again, exactly how it did the night before. What is causing my Mac to do this? How do i fix it? Its about 2 years old and this is the first time anything like this has happened to it! Please help me, I'm not good with computers at all so i have no idea what to do. By the way i dont think its the battery since when i turn it back on it runs just fine without being plugged in. It only turns off when it has been charging and then stops.

Borrow a friend's MagSafe Charger or try with the ones in the Apple Store. Sorry I wasn't clear from your post if you purchased a new charger yet.
Also clean the contacts on the MagSafe port and the charger side.
    Apple recommends:
"Remove debris gently with a cotton swab or a soft bristle toothbrush, which provide the strength, flexibility, and precision for this task. Be careful not to get any cotton fibers stuck in the pin receptacle. You may use isopropyl alcohol to aid in cleaning the connectors as well. Be sure the connectors are dry before using the computer or adapter after cleaning."

  • Macbook Pro freezes, shuts off during startup

My Macbook Pro sometimes freezes and when I try to turn it on again it shuts itself down during the startup.
A couple of days ago my Macbook Pro (15 inch late 2011 with Yosemite) froze and I shut if off by holding down the power button. When I tried to turn it on again a grey screen with the Apple logo and a bar showing how much it had loaded showed up. It loaded about halfway through and then the screen turned grey and my computer shut itself off. It then turned itself on again and the same thing with the grey screens happened and it turned itself off. It continued like that until I forcefully turned it off. After awhile I managed to turn it on in Safe mode, I did a backup and shut it off for the night. The next day it worked fine. Today the same thing happened again.
I remember before it froze for the first time and I shut it off a window came up that said something about a problem with the graphics. I was using Safari at the time. This time I was typing my password to log in.
Does anyone know what the problem is, and how I can solve it?

    hanna.su wrote:
I do that by holding down Command and R when I start it, right? My computer is working fine right now, do you think I should do what you said now or wait until next time this problem happens?
You can do that now.  You cannot do harm to your MBP by executing this procedure.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook shuts off during startup

I have a macbook I got in 08 that is running leopard. Ok so after running Onyx it told me that the volume needed to be repaired. I inserted the install disk and ran disk utility and the volume repair, but it told me it couldn't be fixed. So I quit out of all that and restarted my laptop, but now it won't get past the blue loading screen. The little wheel just goes and goes then my MacBook shuts off. I can still run the Mac os x installer. When i go again to disk utility I can see the Macintosh hd tab and before I couldn't. Is this a good sign?
Can anybody please help? Should i just try to do a restore, if it would let me or?? This is my first time dealing with a problem with a mac and I don't even know where to start.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I have used time machine, although I stopped it from backing up data about a year ago (big mistake). I was wondering if it would be best to restore with time machine or do a restore and then connect the external hd to get my data manually. Because have I changed my login name from the last backup and I don't know if that would cause any extra problems. I really don't want to lose anymore data.
I was also wondering how to go about using diskwarrior. Is it a separate disk? Because right now I don't know how I would get the install disk to eject from the laptop.
