My MacBook Pro sometimes doesn't wake up from sleep mode

Dear users, my MacBook Pro (model 5,1 - 15" Late 2008) is behaving oddly since I upgraded to OSX Lion. Sometimes, after going into sleep mode, it doesn't wake up. When I hit a key (space or enter), I see the login screen, but it's not possible to type my keyword. The only thing active is "the spinning beach ball of death", so I have to manually shut down my Mac and start over. This problem (and also other problems) did not happen in Snow Leopard. The only thing that changed in my Mac is the OS; other programs remain the same. I already tried reseting PRAM and SMC, and fixing disk errors. Thanks for your attention.

try running a hardware test and see if you get an error code: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh35727.html

  • Macbook Pro (2012) won't wake up from sleep mode

    Hi,
When I purchased the Macbook it came with Mountain Lion. It worked fine. Then I updated to Maverick and lots of problems happened. The most annoying one is the wake up thing. I was glad to update to Yosemite thinking that it would resolve my problems. Nope. It still wake up very slowly from sleep mode, sometimes not at all -- I have to shut it down.
I don't know what to do.
(BTW, I tried every trick suggested on the Apple support page: SMC, PRAM...)
    Help !
    Thank you

  • MacBook Pro doesn't wake up from sleep mode

My MacBook Pro (late 2011) with OS Mavericks doesn't wake up from sleep mode anymore. Battery is fully charged and the cable is plugged in. I can still hear the ventilator running, but that's all. I never had any problems, but since about 2 weeks this problem occurs. It usually then woke up after 10-15min, but now nothing happened since 4 hours.
Is there anyone who could possible help me? Unfortunately there is no Apple Store in my area where I could go to.

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. Please read the whole article carefully (some of it is hidden by disclosure triangles) and don't skip any of the steps, including the ones under the heading "Additional troubleshooting." If you don't understand any of the steps, ask for guidance.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
              Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked
Put hard disks to sleep when possible
    Step 4
This and the next step must be taken as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You may see one or more reports with a name that begins with "Sleep Wake Failure" followed by a date. Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    Step 5
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ Diagnostic and Usage Messages
In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.)
You may see one or more lines like this:
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
If you do see that, and you did everything in the preceeding steps, then you're dealing with an internal hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Why doesn't my Macbook Pro with 10.9 wake up from sleep?

I have a Macbook Pro 3.1 with Mavericks Installed on it. I think either the wake on lan is causing problems because it will randomly run its fans and the sleep light will go solid. I open the lid and the screen is black on my other Macs I hit command and it wakes up. On this Macbook Pro  it doesn't I have to do a hard power rest to get it to turn on. There are other times when it is still a sleep and the light is blinking that it will wake up. What can I do to fix this issue?

  • Macbook Pro crashes everytime it wakes up from Sleep

Hi all. I am experiencing a problem of crashes everytime I try to wake up the computer from sleep my Macbook Pro 2010, be it a long sleep or a short sleep.
I did not have any problems at all on Mac OS X Lion and a week ago, I upgraded to Mountain Lion and all those problems occur. So, I decided to roll it back to Lion and did a clean install of Lion but after trying out 3 times, I still cannot resolve the issue.
The problem is when I sleep the computer or close the lid, it sleeps and there's no problem. But when I try to wake up, the screen shows up, it looks alright at the first glance and when I start to move my pointer, the pointer becomes a loading sign and I cannot do anything except moving that loading pointer. I have to force restart my computer everytime it happens.
I really really need help to resolve this issue. I tried resetting SMC & PRAM but nothing helps. I am not using any external input devices or displays.
Hope to see some responses for my problem. Really appreciate it!
    Regards

    Sounds like a hardware problem.

  • Strange problem.  My program sometimes doesn't wake up from sleep.

I have no idea why this is happening. I know the general area is where I am testing for socket connectivity. There is an actual sleep(1) in that loop I test 3 times one second apart).
Sometimes after someone goes into sleep mode (closing the lid), when they open the lid and resume, my program is locked up. It is not red in the activity viewer, but it just doesn't do anything.
To make things even more confusing, if you sleep a little while, like close the lid and walk to another building on campus, and then open the lid, my program runs just fine. However, if you close the lid, like at night, and open the lid the next morning, it always locked up.
Again, I think the area it is on, is the actual Sleep(1) when the computer goes to sleep. Are there two stages to sleep on Macs? Like you close the lid and if you open it in less then an hour its a light sleep, but if it is more then an hour, its a deep sleep.
    Any ideas would be helpful.

No one can help me with this? I have figured out that if I am in a Sleep() and the computer goes to sleep, when it wakes up my program isn't running anymore. I see scores of complaints when googling about all sorts of apps that 'die' when the Mac wakes up. Is there a safer way to Sleep() then that API call?

  • Early 2008 MacBook Pro screen black wont wake up from sleep won't restart

A few months ago my screen would flicker and freeze every so often. It hasn't done so in a while.
Today, I was working, and it was working fine. I shut it (in sleep mode), and a few hours later I went to open it and work again and the screen wouldn't come on, and from what I can hear wont come back on. I've held the power button down and the sleep light will go off, but if I hold it down again, you can hear the computer do something, but does not chime as if it were starting up. The battery is fully charged, I've taken it out, let it rest, and put it back in, and its still not working. Twice now I've held the power button down and all I get is this deep loud buzzed beep.
Any ideas what this could be???

  • 17 " Macbook Pro (Early 2011) wont wake up from sleep

Hi, super new to the forums and was hoping for a solution here.
When I leave my computer on while I'm asleep (playing iTunes) it wont wake up by pressing keys or the trackpad or pressing the power button. The computer is still responding to keys, I can hear the "blop-blop" of the volume buttons, it's just the display isn't turning back on nor is the little light flashing that it's asleep. I figured out if I close the lid then wait for the light to start slowly flashing, it'll wake up when I open it, but I don't want to do that for every time it falls asleep on me.
I called support and they had me hold SHIFTCTRLOPTION to do something, and that ended up not working. They also had me reinstall OS X 10.6.6 and it didn't fix the problem either. Is it time I brought it to the Apple store for an exchange/refund?
    tl;dr
MBP falls asleep, wont wake up, called support, didn't fix it, should I exchange it or is there another way to potentially fix this?
    Thanks for the help!
    -scott

Hi. Dave from Avatron here. We've been testing on a new MBP and haven't been able to replicate the problem. However we do have a working theory about the cause.
Our theory is that Migration Assistant simply fails to invalidate the kernel extension cache when it should. The result is that when you migrate to a new machine with a different built-in display driver configuration, it can't wake from sleep. Or more precisely, it can't wake to Intel graphics if the last graphics adapter used was the Radeon one.
If we're right, then one of these steps should fix the problem:
    1. Install a kext (for example, simply reinstall Air Display), OR
    2. Uninstall a kext (this is why the problem went away when you uninstalled Air Display), OR
    3. "Touch" the kernel extensions directory in Terminal, OR
    4. Boot in Safe Mode.
    Then reboot.
If you can't wake from sleep, please try one of these possible solutions, and let us all know how it goes.
    Thanks!

  • Why is my Macbook Pro running so slow when returning from sleep mode?

I got my new Macbook this past Christmas so it is about two months old. I have the 13" Macbook with the standard 4GB of RAM (not sure if that matters), but when I got my mac I downloaded a bunch of games and such which may have slowed it down initially, though I have downloaded OnyX and Appzapper to uninstall apps and clean my computer. Also I have deleted EVERYTHING from "Login Items" which I thought might help. Basically whenever I am done using my computer I just shut the screen, I don't shut it down or actually click "Sleep Mode" so I'm not sure if shutting the screen puts it in "Sleep Mode," but whenever I open my computer back up I get that spinning loading icon when I click on anything on my desktop and it usually takes 5-10 minutes of this super slow loading before I can actually use my computer. Not sure what the deal is but it is clearly super annoying and I'm hoping to find out how to get around this. I have six 2GB sticks of RAM that I am hoping to trade for two 4GB sticks of RAM to speed up my computer but I am not sure if that would even fix my problem. This is my first Macbook, besides my mothers Mac desktop that I have been using for years throughout High School, but I am a windows guy. I consider myself pretty good with computers, not an expert but I can fix 95% of the problems I encounter, but this one has been stumping me! Thanks a million in advance!

    Hello Linc -
I hope you don't mind but I have a similar issue. Might I be able to enlist your assistance with this issue? I've done as you said, and I have copied the approximate range of messages during my most recent incident. What I'm noticing is that my Mac is staying busy even while asleep. I'm concerned about this behavior, hoping you might be able to help debug the situation and set me on a good path to resolution.
Here's my data (I don't know for certain that I grabbed the proper amount or range of data, but hoping this will help):

  • MBP doesn't wake up from sleeping mode

Since one week I am working on my new MBP. Everything works great and fast, without noise or exceptional heat.
However, there is this one problem: when it has been in sleeping mode for a long time, it doesn't seem te wake up any more. I have to force a restart then.
I can't be more specific on "for a long time". I know there's never a problem waking my MBP up after a few minutes, but there's always a problem when it's been sleeping for (wild guess) half an hour or more.
I experience this problem after putting it in sleeping mode manually and when it has gone in sleeping mode itself.
Does this sound familiar? Any suggestions?
    MBP 1.83 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Thanks for your reply.
I haven't calibrated my battery. Could you tell me how to do this? I have been using the Mac for a few months only and don't know very much about it.
    edit:
I found it already. (Should have looked first and not have asked right away.) I have to fully charge the battery and then use it until it is empty and goes to sleep. After that I have to charge it again. That's it, right? I'll try.

  • So my MacBook pro, after I turn it off from "sleep mode" for over an hour....will make a cracking sound for a little while when I turn it back on. It sounds like something is burning internally or something. Help

I need to know why it's doing this, thanks

    Hi
I dont know why the first message appeared but usually this message is shown when the HDD recovery or Recovery disk would be started.
Do you have some recovery disk in the CD/DVD drive?
Check this otherwise I have no explanation for that
Maybe you should backup the data and should recover the notebook again
    Would be worth a try

  • Short flickering when the notebook wakes up from sleep mode MacBook Pro Late 2013

    Hello everyone!
I have a question concerning the display of my new MacBook Pro with retina display (late 2013).
Sometimes when opening the lid when the notebook wakes up from sleep mode, the display is flickering for like two seconds. Then everything is normal again.
This specially occurs when the lid has been closed for a longer time. It makes no difference if the power adapter is plugged in or not.
Have you experienced a similar flickering with your MacBook Pro?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello!
I have the same problem with my late 2012 MacBook Pro Retina. The constant flickering after being awoken from sleep was a minor annoyance for me so I contacted Apple Support.
I shall explain what I have done thus far, and I recommend you follow the same steps as I did to tick off possible causes:
Firstly, I reset my PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14222) and SMC (ttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964).
The issue still remained so I checked if the flickering occurred in a new user (if it does not then it points to your account having a setting which is causing the flickering - possibly third party). For me the flickering continued so I tested it in Safe Boot (which worked fine!).
I then ran (just to be certain) the Apple Hardware Test (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509). All seemed to be OK. So I reinstalled OS X and still the issue remained.
It was then I had an Apple Support person 'screen share' with me and we went through certain folders. My GPU folder had an unusual amount of files so we trashed them and began a restart however this led to a bigger problem; my notebook wouldn't boot (not even in Safe Boot!), so be very weary at this stage, I'm not sure if this was a rare case or we deleted something we shouldn't have. I then had to go into recovery mode to get back to square one.
Back to the initial problem I reinstalled a 'clean' OS X version from recovery mode; this was to determine whether if the data is corrupted on my account or if it's something else; most likely hardware by now even if there was nothing that came up in the hardware test (it won't account for everything). I checked from both a backup of my data and then from a fresh user after reinstalling OS X and still the flickering continued.
It was then a Senior Apple Support person set up an appointment to have my MacBook looked at and possibly repaired (it could be a minor wire causing the problem).
That is the point I am at now, so for my case it seems like a minor hardware problem. If your case is as similar as mine I recommend making an appointment with them to run more sophisticated hardware tests that your own MacBook would not run.
I will comment again when my issue is completely resolved for those who come across this Discussion in the future.
    Hope this helps!

  • MacBook Pro Retina won't wake after after sleeping!

On most occasions after my 13" MacBook Pro Retina  has been put to sleep (by closing lid or pressing Power  button) overnight  it will not wake up again until I have reset the Systems Management Controller.   Opening the lid, or Power button or Space bar still leaves a black screen.
My wife's new 11" MacBook Air suffers similar problems even after our local Apple Store reinstalled Mavericks in an attempt to resolve the problem..
Any thoughts on a solution would be gratefully received - thanks.

Mac Pro is not the same as the notebook MacBook Pro
