My MacBook shuts crashes intermittently

just got my new mac book 2ghz intel core 2 duo with 1gb ram
love it. but. the system keeps crashing and requires me to hold the power button down to restart and when i try to submit the crash information to apple. does not seem to do anything to enable me to tell them more about the problem.
this seems to happen once every day. god. it feels like working with windows.
i did (MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.1)
this claims to update the SMC Version will be: 1.4f12. however. when i try to install this ... it tells me i do not need this update.
any ideas ? thank you for your help. i am leaving for the missions field next week and need this resolved sooner then later. as getting help internationally i am sure will be difficult in a developing country.

Hello!
Hopefully I, and some others here, can help you with your issue.
What you're experiencing is called a kernel panic.
"You need to restart your computer" message appears, with a gray box in the center of the screen, along with a darkened background:
This message indicates that an error occurred in the core of the operating system, which is referred to as a kernel panic. A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, in rare cases, by damaged or incompatible hardware. The most likely cause of the problem is that a system file or folder has been moved, replaced, or damaged.
If you know that you have moved or renamed a Mac OS X system file or folder, then you must reinstall Mac OS X. (It won't work to just replace the specific item.) If you are not aware of any changes to Mac OS X system files or folders, try the following procedures:
To reselect your Mac OS X startup volume:
Restart your computer. Most often the panic is an isolated event that requires no further action.
Restart your computer while holding down the X key. This may force the computer to start up using your Mac OS X system. If it does, release the X key, then open System Preferences and click Startup Disk. Make sure your Mac OS X system is selected.
If you are unable to start up using the X key, restart your computer and immediately press and hold the Option key. Release the Option key when icons start to appear in the center of the screen. Select the Mac OS X system disk, then click the forward arrow to continue starting up.
If the above attempts to reselect your Mac OS X startup volume are unsuccessful, try resetting PRAM. Shut down your computer, then turn on the computer and immediately press and hold Command-Option-P-R until you hear the startup sound for the second time. Open System Preferences, click Startup Disk, and select your Mac OS X volume.
Note: Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Lastly, if you recently installed software, you could try to isolate the problem by uninstalling that software, or getting an updated version of the software.

  • Macbook Pro crashes intermittently and freeze!!!

I bought my macbook pro 07 august
my macbook pro crashes intermittently, sometimes a a couple of minutes or a few hours. when it crashes, everything freeze and have to press the power button in order to turn it off. tried changing RAM, but it will crash.
Already sent to Apple service centre twice!!!! Run EVERY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TEST! The technician said my macbook pro is FINE!?
    what's going on?
    I'M REALLY DISAPPOINTED!!!

    Suggest you try the following
    1. Insert Leopard Install DVD
    2. Shut down
    3. Reboot holding down the "C" on your keyboard
    4. Click on "English" (assuming that's your language on the computer)
    5. Find "Dick Utility" on the drop down menu at the top of the screen
    6. Select your drive
    7. Run "Repair Disk" (permission repair can be run from your hard drive without booting to the DVD)
    8. Chances are you're crashing because of an incorrect file/folder count (miss-matched). Disk Utility (from the DVD) will repair this. Continuous freeze-ups are probably from this incorrect count. Unless it's repaired, you'll keep crashing. This repair will keep you running until you figure out the cause. I have a similar problem with sleep/wake. At least this keeps me running for a fair amount of time. I've been trying to figure out the cause (unsuccessfully, as yet).

  • My MacBook shuts down intermittently; keyboard disconnects randomly ~

My MacBook shuts down randomly.  It started doing this about a week ago.  Occasionally the keyboard becomes inoperative - ok after reboot.  I have a logitech wireless mouse attached as well as a WD 500GB Passport.

If possible locate your install disk and see if you are capable or running an AHT( Apple HardWare Test ) just to see if anything obvious can be found. Maybe save yourself a trip to the Store.

  • MacBook Pro crashes intermittently...

Usually at night while my mac is asleep it restarts and informs me of the cause of the crash, which I have difficulty understanding. Would anyone know what the cause of my crash is? Thanks.

Hello, since having a new AMD graphics card installed by Apple, my MacBook Pro has crashed at night twice more. The most recent crash gave the following report. Am I correct in thinking it might be the same thing?
Thank you for your advice and help

  • MacBook: Shuts down intermittently

so i have read up on this through out this website and nothing seems to help. i read that i needed to update my firmwire and i did that. it didnt help. then i tried to update me OSX to 10.4.8 but i said it was not compatible with my computer. does anybody have any solutions?

You may already realize this but according to the directions on the firmware update page, you must first update your computer to 10.4.8 before attempting the firmware update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048updateintel.html
    Then install the firmware patch:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbooksmcfirmwareupdate11.html
Once you're done with that, install the latest 10.4.9 update:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049updateintel.html
If you haven't already gotten in the habit, it's a good idea to run Apple Software Update once per week so you catch all important updates soon after they are released. Go to the Apple icon in the menu bar and click on Software Update
    Good luck!

  • TS1599 Macbook (13-inch): Shuts down intermittently

I have been experiencing the issue described in this article (my 13-inch Macbook shuts down intermittently), but I must already have this firmware update installed, as when I try to run the package it says "The computer does not need this update." What else should I try?
NB: I listed my OS as 10.6.8, but I am about to update to Mountain Lion. I doubt that will affect this issue, however.

    Try resetting the SMC

  • Attention!  Peculiar recurring MacBook Shut-Down Behaviour!

After using Macs my whole life, this is the one situation that truly baffles and peeves me greatly ...
I have now owned a 2GHz Macbook (running 10.4.7) for about two months. When I go to shut the machine down, (primarily by way of the apple icon in the menu bar) the screen goes black like normal, and the computer appears to shut down normally. However, for some reason, once the lid is closed, the sleep indicator light turns on and pulses as if its sleeping. At this point, however, if the lid is opened and a key is pressed, the computer will not wake back up. The white indicator light will simply turn off and the screen will just sit there—black. At this point, seeing no other viable options, I usually just resort to holding the power button down for about 10 seconds to make sure the computer is off. I then open and close the lid, and, if the light remains off, then I know its fully shut down. When I turn the machine back on, I am greeted with a message that says "the computer was restarted after Mac OS X unexpectedly quit." I always send this report back to apple with a description similar to what I am writing here. After the 5th occurence, I called Apple. They had me reset the PRAM, boot with the install discs and repair the disk. They said they had heard of similar incidents (as I have) but none quite like this.
As a college student, I do everything on this machine and would be crippled if I had to send it away for repair. That is why I urge you, implore you—beg you!—to come up with a possible answer to this problem.
ps. I have heard of a possible correlation between this problem and the amount of time one waits before closing the lid after shut down ... They say you have to wait at least 10 seconds before the computer will actually shut down. Well, I wait a good 30 seconds each time, and the problem still remains ...

Hi, sydbarrett. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "ps. I have heard of a possible correlation between this problem and the amount of time one waits before closing the lid after shut down ... They say you have to wait at least 10 seconds before the computer will actually shut down. Well, I wait a good 30 seconds each time, and the problem still remains ..."You are referring to the article "Wait for your Apple notebook to fully shut down before you close the display." The article does not specify a wait time before closing the lid, but states the conditions one should observe indicating that the computer has shut down.
    2. Some Intel-based Mac post-sleep behavioral anomalies have been resolved by removing the sleepimage, as follows:2.1. Start up from your Software Restore DVD usually labeled "Disc 1" or "Install Disc 1."
2.2. Select language. The Installer window then appears.
    2.3. Select Utilities > Terminal
2.4. At the terminal prompt type the following exactly as written:
    sudo rm "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/private/var/vm/sleepimage"
then press Return. Note that if your startup disk is not named "Macintosh HD", substitute the appropriate name.
2.5. Type your Admin password if prompted, then press Return.
2.6. At the Terminal prompt, type exit and press Return.
2.7. Quit (Command-Q) Terminal. Focus returns to the Installer.
2.8. Quit (Command-Q) the Installer. Select Restart.3. You wrote: "I urge you, implore you—beg you!—to come up with a possible answer to this problem."Apple may read, but invariably never responds to posts here. Posts made to these forums are answered by other users.
Unfortunately, if the advice above does not help. I suspect you will need to have the machine serviced. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, I'd recommend taking it there. You may wish to call ahead to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.
MacBooks have had a variety of shutdown-related errors reported, e.g. "MacBook: Shuts down intermittently ." You may want to search the MacBook Dicussion for similar reports.
    Good luck!

  • Shuts down intermittently

The MacBook shuts down intermittently. I have installed the SMC Firmware Update v1.1 and have also restarted the computer by holding down the power button until the single long tone is heard. The problem continues. Any ideas?

It's possible because of your battery.. Give the details about it then I can say something about your problem.

  • Macbook pro shuts down intermittently

my macbook pro shuts down intermittently i do not know what the problem is ?

    Dsannin,
if you boot your MacBook Pro in Safe mode, does it behave in the same way?

  • Macbook Pro Core Duo shuts off intermittently

my 2006 macbook pro core duo with 2gb of ram shuts off intermittently.
here's what i've done to troubleshoot:
tried running the hardware support disc by holding down D. it starts to boot the disc and then the computer shuts off. it does this without fail right when the disc starts to boot. the screen flashes a few times and then kaput.
i've tried installing snow leopard. it turns off right around the 25% mark.
i've taken a very large house fan and pointed it directly at the exhaust vents of the computer. the computer stays MUCH cooler to the touch when doing this as i suspect(ed) the exhaust fans are broken. it doesn't help. the computer turns off when booting the hardware disc (at the same point) and while installing snow leopard.
i've taken the two 1gb dimms out and tried to install snow leopard utilizing each of them (1gb at a time) and it still dies.
any suggestions? if i can't get apples hardware testing tool to run and i can't install an OS, what are my options?

    what are my options?

  • Macbook keeps crashing after update to Yosemite

    Hi,
My mid 2010 Macbook Pro crashed about 8 times today after I installed Yosemite.
By crash I mean that it simply shuts down, restarts, shows the Grey "Your computer restarted because of a problem" screen, then immediately restarts again. In most cases I did not even get to see the crash report, the one that came up is attached below.
The fan is going all the time too, at a fairly high rate which it has never done before.  The Activity monitor shows that the process "launchd" is continiously at 70% CPU usage, which might be normal or not - I don't know...
I removed most of my startup items but still no luck.
I would be very grateful for any ideas!
    Thanks!
    Valentin

This is happening to us too.  I've upgraded 2 MBPs, an iMac, and our Mac Mini and it's happening frequently on the Mac Mini.  The problem is that there's seemingly no recipe for reproducing this.  It'll happen 4 times over 4 days and then nothing for a week.  I've tested the RAM with Rember and the modules are fine.
I have all energy saver features disabled so I'm not sure that this is the issue.
My family is out of town next week so I may just do a fresh install on the mini and see where that gets me.  We just use it as our media server so there's not a ton of software to reinstall.

  • 13" Macbook Pro crashed

My MacBook Pro 13 inch seems to be crashing more and more often.  In this case I was watching a youtube video, something I don't do often, and BAM! crashed, no warning, no slowing, no nothing, just rebooted on its owm.  Any ideas/help/etc would be much appreciated.  Also the only other sympotons of substance is that Safari crashes.
    Here is my crash report:

I'm running into the same issue with my Mac Mini with Mountain Lion on it. I thought reinstalling the OS will help the issue, took help from Geniusbar at Apple store to do a clen install of the OS, but I'm running into the same issue after a copuple of days. The system was almost idle, only Safari was running when the issue happened. After it came back up after the restart, Safari crashed again, trying to use Firefox to see if it helps in some way. I plan to try going back to OS X Lion next. Can't work on a machine that crashes intermittently.
    Apple Support - Help please!

  • While running on battery, MacBook Pro crashes after a few minutes of use.

While running on battery, my MacBook Pro crashes (shuts down) after a few minutes (less than 10) of use. Battery indicator still says I have enough power (more than 75%) so it can't be related to the other reported issues with low battery crashes.
While on power adaptor, I don't have any issues.
I checked battery condition as suggested in all the forum threads I can find and its fine.
    Running Lion 10.7.2

PRAM reset did not resolve the issue

  • Macbook shuts down completely instead of standby mode

    Hi
My mpb17 is running well with power adapter. Only with battery, there is a problem. I have changed the battery just few months ago (< 100battery cycles). Since Friday, the macbook shuts immediate down when the battery status came down from 100% to 30-20% without any problem nor warning message before. With shutting down immediate I mean that the power book shuts completely down during 2seconds. It does not go into the sleeping/standby mode then.
What should I do. The reinstallation of the battery was not helpful.

Hi, I got the same problem, I bought my MBP just 15 days ago, I'm a mac user for nearly 12 years and I just need to say this, Every time Apple sell worse and worse hardware I remember the PowerMacs (601 to G5 beatiful machines and work flawlessly) and the quality of their products goes down, I can't believe it.
I was very doubtful about to upgrade my systems, I still got an ibook G4 12", I think the best and noblest laptop ever, I teach Maya on it (believe or not) and never got any crash or any issue. Common Apple you need to make better products!!
Sorry I'm very upset about this, Even the Mac Pro have a lot of Bugs, like the audio issue. I think Apple Mess up with all this transition to intel, Hope Leopard can fix all about this. Halo Universal ***** on my MBP, on My Dual G5 (upgraded to 7800GS Hacked PC Card) runs extremely well. I'm an Apple Trainer too and I got a lot of problems trying to run my Mac Pro as well as My G5, I spent a lot of money to got garbage functionality, I'm very used to get a excelent quality as Apple Used to bring to us, but this Intel machines... We becoming a PC users... that's so Bad.

  • My macbook shuts off randomly, how do I know what's causing this and prevent it from happening again?

My macbook shuts off and I kept a journal for it because mine's got complications.
    July 1, 2014 (Tuesday)
I spilled a cup of choclate milk on my keyboard, it was soaked! But my battery was drained so I know nothing had short out. So I turned it over and never tried to turn it on.
    July 2
I went to the nearest apple center and asked them to clean it for me. (I knew it wasn't a good idea to clean it myself) They put it in a plastic bag but I asked them to open it as soon as possible so I know what parts are affected. They told me they'd take a picture of the inside for me and go back after an hour. Milk was still inside everywhere so I asked them to take it in.
    July 8
I called to get an update on my mac and they said it wasn't economically practical to repair it because they recommended a full system replacement. I got depressed and accepted my Mac's fate. But what's annoying is I put my mac in on July 2 and they only tried to clean it in July 5 which makes me think that was the reason my mac was irreparable.
    July 9
I took my mac and tried to find another opinion but I showed the diagnostics from the apple store and they said they couldn't fix it. My parents were getting ready to buy a new one.
    July 13
I realized that my mac didn't have charge when milk spilled on it so I tried to charge it and BOOM IT OPENED. They keyboards were sticky and it takes a moment before my computer reacts to the trackpad but it works! Even all the keys works! But it doesn't charge.
After lunch, it was workingp perfectly and my batteries were at 30% charge! I was really happy!
(in the interval my mac works perfectly, it stays for normal 7 hours when battery is charged fully)
    However at July 19
There was no electricity for four days (A typhoon came in the Philippines) and my battery is about 7% so I went to the public market to get it charge while I wait for electricity. I charged it for about 3 hours and sideways because it was inside my backpack while it charged so noone will notice it. When I got home and opened my laptop, it shut off randomly after my desktop appeared after start up. So I was sad.
    July 20
I found a solution online to use the option-shift-power button my mac opened and worked normally!
    July 21
My computer was normal in the morning then in the afternoon it shut off again after I waked it up from sleep. Tried option-shift for about 3-5 times before it worked with varying intervals from 5-20 minutes each
    July 22
I get nervous when I use it but it worked perfectly I was even able to edit with Final-cut pro and HD clips.
    Wednesday
Worked perfectly in the morning but in the afternoon, after waking it up from sleep it won't turn on tried the option-shift then I tried resetting the SMC for about three times (my mac is a unibody) but it didn't turn on the whole evening.
    Today Thursday morning July 24
I tried to reset SMC first thing in the morning after the thing won't turn on. After about an hour, I tried to turn my mac on normally and it opened. So what I did is to back up all my files. (It took the whole afternoon) and at night I ran diagnostics (D during start up) and no threats were found
Haven't been experiencing the trouble, as of the moment I'm writing this Jul 25, Friday (12:13 AM) HK time Philippines.
So what I'm asking here is what do I do to make sure this doesn't occur anymore. I probably written a very detailed log. So what else (diagnostics and other) should I do to prevent this from happening again. School starts in August and I will need my laptop to work perfectly to let me go through college with less burden. Thank you and I hope you reply. Any more questions about details on my Mac will be answered

Get a new computer. Consider switching to regular milk, or even a light fruit juice.
