My mini has gotten very slow in the last week or so.

My mini has gotten really slow at everything in the last week. Most of what I do is done on the internet and I use Foxfire 4. Can anyone tell me how to run a system check that might help find the problem? Does anyone know of a problem with Foxfire 4 that might be causing this since I just down loaded it about a week ago.

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
On Foxfire, try using Safari or Opera and see if you have the same issue. You can also check the Foxfire site under support to see if any OS X issues have been reported.
How much unused disk space do you have? General rule is keep 10%+ unused for systems usage. Less than that can really slow the system down.
Some have found periodically using OnyX can help with performance. Download from http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php and run the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance tabs. Before using any disk maintenance software you should have important data backed up.
If you want, you can run the Apple hardware test to ensure you don't have a hardware problem. It's on one of the gray OS X disks that came with your system. Look for the 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert and reboot holding the D key down, or hold the alt/option key and choose the Apple hardware test when prompted. Choose the extended test.

my PowerBook G4 has crashed 4 times in the last week. I got a message that there is a problem with the Mac OS Kernal. Does anyone know what this means?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Why does my system freeze after ever update from Firefox...and has gotten very slow

My computer freezes during or after every update that come in automatically recently. It has also gotten extremely slow at the same time.

Your setup looks like it should really fly.
Often when people have serious slowdowns like you mention, it comes down to one of two things:
    a) Some problem with the user's account. One way to test if this is the case is to create a new admin user and try running FCP X from this new account. If the same projects that were slow behave well in this account you'll know that some setting, or cache, or login item, or whatnot in your own account is responsible.
    b) Some problem with a plugin. If there is a plugin that you use all the time, and maybe was not updated for the current version, and can cause slowdowns, then maybe you think it is the machine. See what plugins you are using, and run a test project without them. Does it run as fast as it should?

  • Help: My PowerBookG4 has gotten very slow

All of a sudden my PowerBook G4 has become very slow. I get lots of beachballs while it is thinking what to do. It takes 5 minutes to restart and sometimes 5-10 seconds just to open a folder (with a beachball while I wait). All apps are running slow. I have a 60 GB Hard drive with 6.5 GB free space. I just run repair permissions (nothing needed to be repaired) and I veriified the drive with HD utility and it said it is OK. Here is the info on my system:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 12" Machine Model: PowerBook6,4;CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (1.1); Number Of CPUs: 1; CPU Speed:1.33 GHz; L2 Cache (per CPU):512 KB Memory: 768 MB; Bus Speed:167 MHz.

    Esteban:
Your HDD space is pretty close to the minimum 10%, although I suspect that is not the issue. However, you might benefit from taking a look at Dr. Smoke's FAQ Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk and free up some space before it gets too full and you run into further difficulties.
Your RAM at 512 MB is a bit meager. Your RAM will max out at 1.25 GB. I suggest you boost it to at least 1 GB.
I am not sure what maintenance procedures you do regularly. I suspect that one of the issues is that your computer needs maintenance. Download and launch MacJanitor and run the daily, weekly, monthly tests.
Here are some article on maintenance procedures which have al lot of excellent suggestions and links to resources:

  • My iMac has gotten very slow lately

    Hi!
    I have an iMac 21.5-inch, purchased August 2010.  OS X 10.8.5
Lately it is been running very slow.  I double-click on an image, and Preview takes 30 seconds to open it.
I have done some reading and ran the EtreCheck report.  I see there are some things in red, but i don't know what they mean, and how to fix.  Any help would be so useful to me!  Thanks!

    Hello,
I recommend you do the following steps to make your mac go faster:
upgrade to 8GB of ram, especially since you have 2 free RAM slots in your Mac (the ratio for in/out shows that your RAM is used between 5 and 10 times too much, because of lack of RAM.
try using a bigger external drive for you Time Capsule Backups (your iMac drive is 500GB, so i'd suggest at least 500GB)
your drive is currently 320GB and it is full, so every hour, the mac is deleting older backups to make room for the new, and this slows down the mac.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    James

  • Verizon FIOS suddenly very slow as of last week

Has anyone else in Manhattan (I'm in the EVil/Gramercy area) noiced a severe increase in latencies (on wired connections) as of the past week or so?  UL/DL speeds can be normal per speed tests, but performance on heavy apps very slow, I'm told by my OT dept due 150ms+ latencies, even to nearby servers, e.g. yahoo.com?
I can barely get any work done. Verizon techs clueless. I'm buying a better router but not sure it will help.
Considering switching to TWC but have heard awful things about them too.
    Any ideas? Tx.

Hold off on buying that new router. It's probably not the culprit. I've noticed this as well (Midtown west), espcially while gaming, since the latency is much more apparent. Some sites are still good, but others have much higher latencies than normal. I've ran tracert's  on random sites, and it appears that there is a delay when the packet reaches "NYC1.Alter.net". I'm pretty sure this is a point beyond Verizon's reach, but they're the ones most likely to be able to fix this. The problem is trying to reach the right people. I spent a while with tech support yesterday, but they don't even know the difference between speed and latency, and even told me to contact the problematic websites to resolve the problem.... *sigh*... They said they would forward my issue along to a networking team. Other than that I think we can only hope they are aware of the issue and can work to get it resolved.

  • When I key on a website it will not come up all the sudden and the search times out. It is usually a click on attachment and Firefox has gotten very slow.

For example, I opened my Citibank file and tried to open my Visa account and it would not open and then timed out. I tried to open from my email my college board account and it only timed out. I went to Internet Explorer and they opened. Is there a problem at Firefox?

@Steve_Clairman, if you are looking for the orange Firefox button (abbreviated menus), it will appear if you turn off the classic menu bar:

  • Mini has become very slow in wireless communications

Mac Mini 2 GHz Core 2 duo has been operating OK the past few months but has now slowed to a crawl using wireless via Apple Extreme base station connected to a wireless provider. Mail program locks up with beach ball when trying to reply or send. A reboot will allow maybe one message to be sent before the beach ball re-appears. Hardware check is OK. Permissions are OK so I decided to reinstall system software using system discs and am now trying to download system updates but it is barely progressing. Download will stall and not change for hours on end. Turning off Airport and then back on again will resume download but it is presently downloading about 10 MB in an hour. Am typing this on an iMac Core 2 duo running 10.5.5 which continues to work just fine and is 6 feet away from the Mini. It's not feasible to directly connect the Mini or I might do that. Airport shows all 4 bars on this machine and 3 or 4 on the Mini. iStumbler shows about 50% signal and 15% noise on this machine but kicks off the connection when I try it on the Mini.

Because of the small size of the Mini's antenna, even relatively small changes in the orientation of the Mini, or changes in objects in its environment, could affect signal quality. This is especially true if the signal needs to leave the room to get to the base station.
How far is the Mini from the base station? What objects are immediately adjacent? Hopefully nothing is on top of the Mini.

  • HT1414 My iPhone 5 has been shutting itself down and I'm unable to turn it back on without doing a hard re-boot. This has happened 6 times over the last week.

I've connected to iTunes and have proceeded as suggested with "Restore iPhone 5" procedure. My phone has been connected to iTunes in "Restore Mode" for over 2-hours. This seems an inordinate amount of time. Is this normal? In iTunes, the top message states "waiting for iPhone", the lower message states "iPhone recovery mode" iTunes is restoring the software on this phone".
How long does this typically take? It seems that an inordinate amount of time has elapsed for this process so far.
