My new external Hard drive has not the correct size

Hi all,
I bought a WD30EZRX 3TB hard drive a plugged it to the imac with an usb DriveDock.
The problem is that the size of the hard drive in disk utilities is 800 GB and not 3 TB !!
How to solve this problem ?

Backing up to new external hard drive is not working

I just purchased a new 2TB FreeAgent external hard drive. I hooked it up to use as a time machine backup and in the preferences of Time Machine it said that the drive needed to be formatted. I then went to Disk Utility and erased the drive using the format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and gave it a name. Once that was done I attempted to back up again through time machine but it started the "calculating changes..." at 23% and stayed there all night. I do not know if I need to reformat it differently or why it is not working.... any suggestions?

Do you mean it ran backups? Or just that it was recognized? Those are very different.
The mac pro has 2 internal hard drives. One for the OS and the other for a tm backup.
Be sure that second drive is now excluded from TM Backups via TM Preferences > Options. If TM is trying to back up the internal disk's TM backups onto the new external, that might explain why it's confused (I know I am!)

Do you mean you've "daisy chained" it, to yet another disk also containing TM backups?

Do the two disks have different names, and does TM Preferences show the new name? If not, the preferences file may be corrupt. In that case, do a "full reset" per #A4 in the Troubleshooting Tip.

I'm not entirely sure that's true. Please clarify exactly what you're doing; what's connected where and how, and what's being backed-up.
On the Pro, you have 2 internals and how many externals? Which ones are being backed-up (ie, not on the exclusion list in TM Preferences > Options)?

External hard drive will not partition correctly

This is a somewhat long post, but the point is this: I have a new 1TB Fantom GreenDrive (attached via USB) which I cannot partition the way that I want to. I want to allocate 300G for a Time Machine backup partition and the remainder as a partition for everything else. For some reason, I'm only able to partition the drive so that it has two equal-size partitions. While this isn't terrible (the 300G figure was somewhat arbitrary), I'm curious to see if anyone knows what's going on here. As part of my tale, I list three "mysteries" that have really stumped me.
For at least a year now, I've had two external USB drives attached to my machine through a hub. One (a Fantom Titanium-II 500G drive) was for Time Machine, and the other (a LaCie 150G drive) was for other files. These drives were almost always connected to my machine, and they were almost always powered on. About three weeks ago, the Time Machine drive started unmounting, seemingly randomly, from the computer. When I tried to verify it in Disk Utility, it gave me an error, and the drive would again unmount. At the same time, I started having problems with the LaCie drive - when I plugged it in, the Mac gave me a message saying that the drive wasn't working properly and that I had to back up everything on it.
This all seemed too coincidental to me, and so is the first mystery of my saga. However, I saw the GreenDrive on sale and decided to pick one up, rather than trying to fix the two drives. When I connected the GreenDrive to the computer, it was formatted at NTSF. When I tried to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Disk Utility gave me an error.
If I booted the Mac into Windows, I could format the drive again as NTSF, and it would work fine. When I went back into the Mac side, it worked there, too (that is, I could read from it and write to it). Also, I could use Disk Utility to format the drive as MS-DOS (FAT). Of course, I needed to format the drive for the Mac so that it would work for Time Machine.
When I went into the Time Machine preference pane and selected the GreenDrive for Backup (which was still formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) at the time), and did the erasing from within Time Machine, I was able to get the drive formatted as one large Mac OS formatted partition. Why I was able to successfully format it from Time Machine, but not from Disk Utility (which I believe is what Time Machine uses for the erasing, anyway) is the second mystery.
So, now I had a 1TB hard drive set up a single partition. I still wanted to divide it in two. However, when I tried using Disk Utility to partition it the way I wanted, I got an error saying the partition failed. Just as a test, I tried partitioning as two equal-size partitions, and this worked. Why it would let me partition in this configuration, and not the way I wanted, is the third and final mystery.
In the end, I'm almost where I want to be. I had to spend a little bit of money, but I have more total storage space available, and it seems to be working fine. Also, I was able to format the LaCie drive, and it seems to be working well, so it wasn't a total loss. Still, any answers you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Be sure your drive is initially partitioned into one single volume. Then format the volume for Mac OS Extended. Once that's done re-partition the drive into two volumes (if that's what you desire) then resize them as you want. How you do the resizing may be important. Usually the larger volume is the first or top volume. Select it by clicking on its rectangle in the sizing gadget. Then in the Size field enter the size you want. That should result in the first volume being resized to what you want and the second volume automatically resizes accordingly.
Here's how I suggest doing it:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

How can I share iPhoto library between users on same mac. External hard drive has not worked.

I need to share and edit photos between users on one mac. I have tried sharing the file on an external drive but this has caused all sorts of problems with photos disappearing and/or not being able to be edited. I was hoping iCloud sharing or family would work but being on the same machine I need the main iCloud account active at all times. This is a workplace so the second user has minimal access permissions.

okay I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but i just imitated the same scenario on my mac and it seems to work fine. I made sure to change permissions of the shared folder AND the the actual photo library. I gave everyone access to everything (as far as the folder & library was concerned). I uploaded & viewed from both accounts. You might want to view permissions of your entire disk in disk utility to make sure there isn't an error.. Make a backup first though.
The permissions will not stick. Earlier iPhoto versions did allow this, because iPhoto did not write to an iPhoto Library if you only wanted to browse it, but with iPhoto '11 the behaviour changed. Opening an iPhoto Library from a different account will write files with changed ownership right into the library, and that will cause problems if you edit or tag photos from a second account. I have moved all my songs onto a new external hard drive but it has wiped my iPod clean. Although when I connect my iPod it's starts teh process of sync'ing - so many songs in I get a pop up advising the siong could not be read or written to?

Did you go into iTunes to change the location of your media files? if not you will need to go into iTunes and click on preference and select the advance tab then click the iTunes Media folder location. Select the location of your on external hard drive.

That's a bummer, didn't realize the exHD files were corrupt, esp if you have tried from another PC and not just this new computer.

The external hard drive is not showing up on my desktop

I've just brought a new external Hard drive for my mac book pro and when I put the usb cable into the laptop nothing showed up on the desktop. I waited a few minutes but nothing happen and then I turned off the computer and did it again. Will be great help if anyone knows what to do.

Getting my backed-up photos into iPhoto on the new external hard drive

I managed to use Time Machine to restore the back-up of my external hard drive (that died) to a new external hard drive, however, while I can see the .jpeg images that were in my original (ext. hard drive) iPhoto library on the new Passport Drive, they are no longer set up in an iPhoto library. I might have confused the system because I had thought I needed a shell structure iPhoto library on the new hard drive, so I basically moved the new "budding" iPhoto library established on my iMac's internal hard drive to the Passport drive before restoring the Time Machine backup. What I see now is 1. a 4GB iPhoto library existing on the internal drive. 2. an identical 4GB iPhoto library existing on the external Passport drive and 3. a folder named Simpletech with the entire contents of the failed hard drive including all the photos from my original 54GB iPhoto library that resided on the old external hard drive, which are accessible as independent .jpeg files, but no longer organized as an iPhoto library.
Would love to know the steps to having just one iPhoto library on the Passport external hard drive that contains all my images without accidentally losing/deleting any images and messing up pointers. I would not mind eliminating the iPhoto library on the internal hard drive either, provided I could get all the images into the main one.

If you used Time Machine to backup your hard drive then the iPhoto Library package should be in it. If you did something different please explain in detail what you did.

Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

Yes, but you might want to note that the port on the AirPort Extreme is only USB 2.0, and that it runs at about half the speed of the USB 2.0 port on a computer, so things are going to be quite SLOW as far as backups are concerned, or anything else for that matter.

A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3. Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer. When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

New Computer and New External Hard Drive - why do folders and photos not show up?

I replaced my desktop with a new laptop and external hard drive. I transferred photos from the desktop to the external hard drive. Lightroom 2 only shows the mapped hard drive, but does not show any folders or photos. Can Lightroom be set up to house all the photos on an external hard drive rather than using space on the internal laptop hard drive? Do the photos and folders need to be imported again into LR2? The photos are available for viewing when you search folders, but they open up in Photoshop not LR2.
What should I do to configure imports to be housed on the external hard drive? Is this wise? I will not be able to hold all the photos on the laptop internal hard drive. Photos used to be JPEG and DNG from D700. I am starting to see NEF. Does this replace DNG? Besides RAW I also need to have JPEG for other family members to access photos on other computers connected to the network. I am watching a tutorial DVD and slowly picking up how this all works. Let me know if I am not using the correct terms.

Lot's of questions here. I'll do a few.
Yes Lightroom can work with images on external drives. As many drives as you want.
I assume from what you said in your original post that you have had lightroom installed on the old desktop and now wish to transfer your catalogue and all files to the external drive and work from that.
So what you would do would be to transfer the entire contents of the lightroom folder on your old computer, except for any images, to the same location on your new laptop. This would include the catalogue files and any folders containing previews. Then you would copy all your image files to the new external hard drive. When you open lightroom you can then select the catalogue you copied from the old computer and open it. In the the folder pane in the library module you can then right click on one of the folders and select "locate missing files". Then you just need to point light room to the new location of your images. You may or may not need to regenerate all your previews.
I store all my images on external hard drives and I even run the catalogue and previews from the same external drives. I have backups of all my images of course. I have light room make backups of the catalogue to the C drive on my laptop so that the original and the backup are stored in different locations.
NEF is the proprietary file system for raw images used on Nikon cameras. DNG is a universal raw file format developed by Adobe. You can convert your files from NEF to DNG on import, but as Lightroom can read both types of files it is not necessary. At this point in time if you are using lightroom you should get similar results from either type of file.
To store imports on the new external drive you can you tell light room to copy the files to the new drive or you can manually copy the files to the new location and have light room import From the current location.

Bare in mind that Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the same music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.
