  • I Mac won't start -- we get apple logo with spinning wheel, question mark that disappears and then a blank blue screen

My daughter's old I Mac won't start. It is not backed up.  We want to get some things off of it if we can.
When we turn it on, we get the Apple logo with spinning wheel for awhile, then a question mark briefly and then a sky blue blank screen.  Is there any hope of getting this to work?  This computer is out of warranty.  Does it seem that if we reinstall the Operating System we might find old data?

First try restarting with the original install disc an run Disk Utility to repair the drive. If you have to re install the OS make sure you select archive and install or else everything will be lost.

  • Mac won't start up and shows grey screen

My mac won't start up this morning ? It has a full charge of battery and even plugged in it just shows the grey screen. Any help.

Please restart your Mac and hold the 'Option'-key to see your start-up discs. If you do not see any start-up discs it could be your hard disk cable that is faulty. This is a common problem with Macbooks, but I am not sure this issue has been fixed with the Retina models. I've had this problem with my 2012 Pro, and a new cable did the job. Very easy to do yourself!
You can also start Internet Recovery (need wifi or cable) and start up Disk Utilities to see if your hard disk shows up there.
    Please let me know.

  • Mac won't start (Kernel Panics)

    Hello,
My mac won't start up. It turns on, gets as far as the spinning circle and apple logo then a dark screen comes down with a Kernel Panic message. This occurred roughly three months ago and I ended up taking the mac into the regent street store where it was fixed under apple care warranty. My care has now run out, and the 90 day repair warranty has expired but the problem is back so obviously hasn't been fixed properly. Is there anything that can be done about this?
Every time I boot up the computer the message appears, I have tried rebooting with the safe option as well as re installing OSX from the original disks. The install completes successfully but upon restart it pops up with the original kernel panic message.
Luckily I have everything backed up so am prepared to try anything to get it running.
    Thanks.

Let us know, but since you obviously have another machine, have you tried Target Disk Mode and then Disk Utility?
use TDM to access Disk Utility.
    1. Click the First Aid tab.
    2. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    3. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    4. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    Please post back,

  • Repost: brand new mac won't play/recognise/mount audio-cd's

No idea what's going on here. I posted a question which I will paste below. Someone posted some suggestions for me (Dave Sawyer if I remember the name correctly, thanks again!) which lead me to ask wheter I was or was not supposed to have a file named cd info.cidb in a certain folder.
Now all of a sudden my thread is gone and I find the following mail in my inbox:
    NoName posted "Re: brand new mac won't play/recognise/mount audio-cd's" in "brand new mac won't play/recognise/mount audio-cd's" on Aug 1, 2008 4:21:01 PM.
You wouldn't have that file unless you used iTunes to get CD metadata from Gracenote. I hate Gracenote, therefore I have never had that file on my system

The origial question post was the following:
    Hi all!
I am totally new to the macbussines (got one for a month now) and not using cd's much I never tried importing one untill today... and it simply won't. I think it's supposed to show the audio-cd on the desktop and give me an 'import cd' button in itunes whenever I insert an audioCD right?
It won't do... it'll take it in, turn it a few times and slide it right out again.
    What I tried so far:
    * toying with itunes settings for importing (import cd & eject, show CD, ask to import cd etc)
    * toying with the cd&dvd preferences under system preferences
    * click the mount 'button' in disk utility as was suggested in all those threads regarding cd's not mounting first time (my cd's won't mount the second or 30th time either)
    * resetting the PRAM
    Nothing so far.
It does recognise DVD's but no audio cd's whatsoever, originals, burned ones. You name it. As I don't use CD's a lot the newest CD dates from 2003, but that can't be it, can it?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated...
    o/
Am I going para? Where did my post go? It's totally gone, not even under 'my posts' or anywhere...
Still no solution either... suggestions still welcome therefor

My guess is that someone didn't like that I said I didn't like Gracenote.
Anyway, I Googled for your thread and luckily found it intact in the iTunes for Windows forum and posted a condensed reply there for you.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. • Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)

I just got off the phone with an AppleCare agent. My iBook OS 10.4 wouldn't start - it just went to a blue screen. I'm happy to say that the agent got everthing working again and said that she would email me an article that would help if it ever happens again. She emailed me "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)" I have 10.4, is this article any use for me or was I emailed the wrong articel. Is there an article "Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.4 or later)"????

Thank you for yoiur response. I'll click on that link and add my input..
Don't be put off by the title. The document's just as
valid for Tiger, especially if those are the same
steps that fixed your problem. The article was
revised Feb 2006 and someone forgot to update it to
    mention Tiger. Go to
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
, click on the It's good, but... link and
tell them it should be updated to include a reference
    to Tiger.

My Mac won't start. I have tried all trouble shooting things like unplug and plug into a different power point. If I leave finger on start button, can sometimes get internal fan to attempt to start then stops. Please help. My computer is less than two years old.

Then, it's time for a trip to an Apple repair station.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Afterwards, exit DU, exit Install, restart normally.

Acrobat Pro for Mac won't start, even after restarting the machine.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Patrick,
Can you please mention the version of Adobe Acrobat that you are using and on what OS version. Also mention whether this problem has started recently and was running fine earlier or is it a fresh install and has never worked for you.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the product after you started facing this issue.
