My new macbook air storage keep going down without doing anything.

so, i got a new macbook air 11 inch, 120 gb. i set it all up and stuff and when i check my storage i only got 99 and stuff left. how can that be? i didn't download anything, all i did was set it up. I download stuff and delete it so my storage keeps going up and down. Then one day, i have to restore my cousin's iPad for her using my macbook which has 99 something gb, then after that's done, the storage goes down to 93 gb. Seriously, i didn't do anything. please explain to me if the stuff i do takes storage or not becauseI have to save storage for school works. Thank you for reading

Move your cursor up to the Apple menu and select About this Mac then select Storage from the options at the top of the dialog box that opens. This Spotlight view will show you how much of the drive is being used to store Applications, Files, Music, etc. Other is something of a catchall group so it doesn't really help.
One explanation for the "missing" space is Backups. If you are using TimeMachine the computer will make backups to the internal drive whenever it isn't connected to the TimeMachine drive. This 'missing' space really isn't missing because if you really need it the computer will automatically delete the internal backups to free it up for you.
Another explanation are cache files and system logs. Your programs and the operating system need to keep temporary files and they aren't always immediately deleted. Your browser(s) also create cache files which makes your internet surfing experience much faster for sites you frequently visit. These caches can be quite large.
To delete/trim system and application caches you can restart your computer while holding the shift key. This is a safe boot and among other things it will delete/trim caches. Reboot normally once you get to the Finder. Also, remember to empty the trash can - putting stuff in the trash doesn't immediately delete it. If you use iPhoto you must manually delete its trash too.

  • HT4623 Why the volume of iPhone keeps going down without any button being pushed

The volume of my iPhone keeps going down without any button being pushed, why?

    Hello there Saber7,
If I understand correctly, the phone seems to think the phones volume up is constantly being pressedbut the button still clicks when you press it. This should be easy to isolate to hardware or software, so I would start by quitting all the apps that are running on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that reset the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

  • Help - Please. Trying to migrate my photos/videos to my shiny new macbook air - and keep running into a brick wall.

    Help! I am super frustrated.
I just bought a new Macbook Air running Mavericks. My old computer is a white macbook running 10.5.8. After much research I determined that in order to use migration assistant I needed to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I ordered the new disc from Apple, went out tonight and bought the SuperDrive in order to do the install (my disc drive no longer works on the old macbook) - and the SuperDrive is not compatible with the old macbook. ARGH! So for the moment migration assistant is out as I'd like to avoid going out and buying a second external disc drive.
I believe the only things I really need from the old computer are itunes, documents and photos/videos. I was able to enable home sharing and transfer itunes last night. I saved all documents to an external drive and have copied them over. Now all that remains is iphoto. Last night I copied the iphoto folder to an external drive and imported it into the pictures folder on my new macbook air. When I opened attempted to open them in iphoto, nothing happened - there were no photos - it wouldn't recognize them I guess. So I dragged it all to the trash and I'm back to square one.
Any ideas on how I can get my photos/videos onto this new computer?
And - is there anything I'm overlooking in terms of things that should be migrated to this new computer?
Please help. I don't really know what else to try. I just feel like there has to be a trick in the way that I export and then import iphoto that I'm overlooking. I've combed thru the support communities and just don't really know what else to try.

Thanks for the advice on switching out the external drive. I ended up doing trying a wireless transfer last night while I was sleeping - and it seems to have worked.
So - no I have documents, photos, itunes, and contacts migrated over.
Is there anything that I'm not thinking of that I should try to get off of the old computer? I do have an old version of Adobe Photoshop Elements that would be nice to bring over - but I probably won't miss it if I can't. Is there a way to wirelessly move over an application? And - it looks like iMovie won't be able to transfer - I only have 3 movies on the old one - but I cannot highlight them when I tried to move them over. Should I consider those a loss?
Again - thanks for any and all help. Looks like I'm doing this by bits and pieces instead of with Migration Assistant.

  • Brand new MacBook Air fails to shut down

I took ownership of a brand new 13" MacBook Air on Friday 15th, have been trying it since then and found that on occasion it hangs during the shutdown process. This has happened five times in two days of use (it's now the 17th). The only way to get the MBA to shut down is to hit the start button for an extended period otherwise it will sit spinning for eternity. I have experimented and tried to shutdown programmes first before shutting down the MBA, but this doesn't appear to help.
I have only installed a few programmes on the MBA since receiving it, (Lightroom and 1Password), everything else is as it was when it was delivered, brand new. I purchased it via the online store and requested that it was upgraded with 8GB RAM and a 1.7GHz processor, so it came from China with these upgrades carried out.
Could this be a memory problem? I understand that MBs can be fussy about what type of memory is installed. It seems odd as the memory was installed in the factory.
Should I do a VRAM and/ or PROM reset? Are either of these responsible for controlling shut down procedures?
It is very disappointing as I had been really looking forward to getting the MBA and I am concerned that this might be an inherent fault with this particular machine. Any help would be appreciated. I will contact Apple Support as I have 90 days phone support, but I thought I should try you all first.
    Chris

RAM should not be a factor for a brand new Mac. Third party software is often the culprit.
Make sure to log out of 1Password before shutting down >  https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/5265/1password-cancels-logout
Tip ... there's no need for a third party password manager. The pre installed Keychain Access app can do that for you.

  • I have a new MacBook Air which keeps turning off by itself and now won't turn on at all...

It's been working fine since I've had it but yesterday it kept turning off by itself and then within minutes off turning it back on it would do it again. Also the little box kept popping up asking if I wanted to sleep, restart etc as if I had pressed the power button. I tried to turn it off completely and now it won't turn back on at all. If I plug the charger in the green light comes on but nothing happens on the actual MacBook itself. What do i do ?

If that doesn't help, try the Apple Hardware Test, which is on your original DVD that came with the Mac or can be run from the Recovery Disk (for a newer Mac).
Before taking your Mac in for service if none of the above works, try booting into safe mode to see if that helps. If it works ok in safe mode, you may have some incompatible software installed.

  • Old Macbook to New Macbook Air Transfer but new Macbook Air has less Storage Space. I only want to keep all iTunes and iPhoto Files. I can keep the rest on an External HD. How should I do this?

Bought a New Macbook Air and wanting to transfer only iTunes and iPhoto stuff to the new Macbook Air. How should I do this? Ive got and External HD acting as Time Machine but the Data on there is 143G worth and the New Macbook Air is a 128G HD. So i dont need all the extra Documents but want to keep them on the External HD which has been Partitioned.
Question is - How do I transfer the iTunes and iPhoto info into the New Macbook air and keep all its settings ect and also keep the Docs ect in the HD? Time Machine wont work as there is too much info for the New Macbook Air.
    What should I do?

I am confused about the new MacBook Air.  It would appear it does not have an internal DVD/CD drive as most computers do. Does this mean after the price of this Mac Air I still would have to purchase an external DVD/CD player to load software or play DVD's and CD's ??? That seems like technology is going backwards and the owners just want more money.  If I am wrong, I applogize.
    Thanks,
    Debbie

Floppy drive?   Who has floppy drives in this day and age.  Does anyone sell software on that format?  I don't think so.  At least any software sold today.
I've had my MBA for nearly 6 months now and don't miss having a built-in DVD drive in the least.  First of all, with only a 128GB drive, I'm not "porking" it up with a lot of junk.
The form factor of the MBA is beautiful and wouldn't be possible with a internal DVD drive.  I wouldn't want one anyway.  The only time I've use an external DVD USB drive was to install a few programs that I have on DVDs.
The MBA is about a very light weight computer for use mainly outside of the home.  And this is where it excels. If you really want a DVD, get the Apple unit for $79 or a no-namer on ebay for around $25.  Then use it and park it. You won't need it very often if ever after the first use or so.

  • My new MacBook Air keeps shutting down the screen while I use it

My new MacBook Air keeps shutting down the screen while I use it and has to be rebooted. I took it in to the Genius desk at my local store, but they couldn't find anything wrong and said that they have never seen this problem before.
I Spoke to the IT support guy at work. He has the same problem with his new MacBook, but not with his older one. He suggested that it is a software issue with all new MacBooks and is connected to the timing of it going into sleep mode. Does anybody have a solution? Apple doesn't seem to have one.

    Try a SMC reset.

  • Safari on my new macbook air keeps freezing. I think I might have deleted something when migrating from my old macbook. Any ideas what it would be?

    Hi All
I have recently purchased a new macbook air. I used the migration software to transfer everything from my old macbook to the new one. I had lots of crap on the computer, so went through and deleted lots of applications and documents from the new macbook air. Now I've gone to use safari and it keeps freezing once I leave the home page, or one click afterwards.
I'm worried I accidentally deleted something I need to run safari. I followed the instructions on the support website to check my "library" for internet plug-ins etc, but there wasn't anything in those folders.
Any ideas on how to fix this or how to check what I need to run safari properly are most appreciated!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • When is the new MacBook Air going to be available in Romania ?

Hello , I really want to buy the new MacBook Air , but it seems like it is not coming in Romania . When is it going to be available in Romania too?

Check for its availability in your Apple Online Store. None of your fellow Apple users have any more knowledge about that subject than that.
