My newly transferred songs from my external hard drive to my ipod read as "Other" instead of "Audio" files
Okay, i need help bad.
Here's the issue. This is my 2nd iPod classic. My first one, which worked beautifully for several years, died. the drive went bad. A sales associate at the Apple Store said it just crapped out (she didn't use those exact words) and my options were to send it out for a new 80G to replace the bad one at $120, or buy a new one, which yielded only one size and one choice for the classic ipod, the 160G. So i sucked it up and bought the 160G. I wanted the extra storage space anyway.
Came home, hooked it up, and new ipod required a newer version of itunes to mount and manage mp3's. it's not iTunes 10, required for sync with iPhone, but newer than what i currently had at hook up, which was some version of 8 or 9. it's now version 9.2.1, to be exact. After installation was complete, iPod mounted and worked with new version of iTunes just fine. Just recently, I connected my external hard drive to my laptop to transfer music i had backed up from my old classic and iTunes. The transfer seemed to work fine, but now with my pod still connected, the newly transfered audio mp3 files are not in my library. The are stored as "Other" under the iPod Summary tab, NOT AUDIO. so i cannot listen to those 14,000 or so songs and albums i just transfered. This is completely frustrating. Can anyone help?? Thanks. How do i convert these to Audio Mp3 files instead of "other" so i can listen and manage in my library, and so they show in the artists menu?? I have "Manually manage songs" checked in the Summary tab. I think it's storing or acting as an external hard drive. Someone help, i'm really ****** off right now. I spent a lot of time d*cking around transferring songs i can't even listen to or make playlists from now. Thanks a lot!

You maybe right, you transfer your 14k songs to your iPod under disk mode, so it don't appear as Audio.
To load your songs into Ipod Audio section, your must load them via iTunes, either Sync or Manually Manage your library, any other way, it just uses up space in the iPod Harddisk, and wont be on your iPod music menu.
So
1. Import your 14K songs into the iTunes library first. (read the iTunes help if you need instructions)
2. You can either Manually manage selected songs from the library or Sync all.
You can delete the songs in the Other section, by going into diskmode, use Finder and delete the 14K songs.

Just a few song tracks, or your whole library? If just a few tracks, drag them from the drive to the open iTunes library window or playlist window. If your whole library drag the whole iTunes folder to your computer. Hold down the option key while starting and guide it to the library.itl file in that folder. If you need to merge libraries post back because that's a much longer post.

Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.

OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
/sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do. If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
mount -uw /
cd /private/var/db/netinfo
mv local.nidb local.old
rm ../.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
1. Type fsck -fy
2. Type mount -uw /
3. Type passwd <username>

Not a good idea.
What you could do, is have the Library content on the external hard drive and simply tell your iTunes programme to look on the hard drive for your music etc.. However, once you set that up, that hard drive needs to be connected and ready to read, before you start the iTunes programme. If it isn't ready, iTunes will simply go back to the default location for the music, find nothing and then you'll be back here saying that you've lost your Library. -
I have moved old Back Up files from my external hard drive to the trash and as the Trash previews the files, i.e. counts them (over 850,000 files) it then begins to delete but then stops. Is it possible to move the files out of the Trash file and then only delete a small amount at one time?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?
Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.

i just bought a macbook air. ive been transfering all my songs from my external harddrive that i had on my previous laptop for itunes. now that i got them transfered. my itunes wont open. it says "the itunes library file cannot be found or created. the default location for this file is in the itunes folder in the music folder." what do i do!?!
How did you move the music? You have to do it in a specific way:

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library. -
Why can't I download songs from an external hard drive onto iTunes?
So I have an external hard drive with some songs on it that I wanted to get on iTunes so they can be synced to my iPod. I plugged my hard drive in and then went to iTunes where I clicked on "File" (in the top left corner) and scrolled down to "Add folder to Library". I then found my external hard drive and selected the albums/songs that I wanted.
They loaded onto iTunes just fine. Everything looked right and the songs were all on the list. I even managed to get album artwork on most of them.
Then I went to "sync iPod" and an alert message popped up saying "Some of your songs were not synced to your iPod because they could not be found." (Or something very similar to that)
So none of the songs made it onto my iPod and when I checked the Library list again, all of the songs I had just put on iTunes had exclamation points in front of them.
What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

1) added the songs to the itunes database, but did not copy the acutal files to the PC's internal HD
2) unplugged the exHD and now itunes doesn't know now to find them anymore
If you plug the exHD back in, and it has the same drive letter as it did when you added the songs to itunes, it should work. -
Transferring data from an external hard drive previously connected to a PC
I have an external hard drive that is loaded with data from it's previous connection to a PC. I would like to transfer that data to my new mac pro.
Is that possible and if so can someone give me a brief description of the steps to take.
ThanksIt depends on the data - but all things are possible. I have data that goes back to Apple II days - and it has moved with me from Apple II to MS DOS to Mac OS 7 to Windows 95/98/2000/XP and then to OS X!
If you are using Word documents, Excel spreadsheets etc. then there will be no problems (other than minor formatting issues alluded to by another forum member). The only catch here is if you have encrypted a spreadsheet in Excel on the PC, the Mac version of Excel will not be able to read it.
Proprietary database structures (such as MS Access) are more difficult to transfer as there is no MS equivalent on the Mac (although FileMaker can import MS Access databases).
If you have Windows Address Book contacts and Outlook/Outlook Express emails, these can all be directly imported.
If you have WMV files (i.e. Windows Media Player), then you will need to download Flip4Mac to access them. -
How do I copy my songs from an external hard drive backup to my new laptop
Because my old laptop was . . . well, old . . I had to store my iTunes songs and iTunes onto an external hard drive where I backed up all my documents. I now want to copy my library of songs on to my new Windows 8 laptop. But I'm not finding it easy to figure out how to do this. On another note (maybe related. . maybe not) I keep getting an error when I try to download the latest and greatest iTunes on to that external hard drive.
Thanks for any an all help before I'm tempted to climb out on the ledge (luckily I live on the first floor).If the entire library (database & media) is already on the external drive (in the right layout) then you should be able to connect to it by holding down shift as you start iTunes and then choosing the library. If you only have the media folder on the drive then you need to do some preparation for the move first. See this migrate iTunes library post for details.

Try this:
In iTunes, click Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab > General tab
Select the options to "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library"
Make sure the iTunes Music Folder location is directed to where on the internal drive you want to save your files
Click OK
Then, click Advanced > Consolidate Library
This will copy the files to the internal drive, as well as make sure iTunes is reading your files from that internal drive, and not the external

I had to reformat my Windows partition and I backed up all of my iTunes to my external hard drive and I need to transfer them back. Also when I backed them up they were created in 8.0+ version. Would I need to get iTunes to the most current version or would it be fine if I didn't. Thanks. -

You can use someone else's iTunes programme on their computer to create a Library of your music. Then connect your iPod to that Library.
If the other computer does not use iTunes, then you simply need to connect your hard drive to it, install iTunes and tell iTunes to look for the hard drive at installation time. Subsequent use of that iTunes Library will need you to have the hard drive connected and ready to read before you start iTunes. If not, iTunes will look on the C:\ drive and find nothing.
If the other computer already has their own iTunes Library, it is possible to tell iTunes to look at an alternative Library as you open iTunes. I think (but I'm not sure) that you need to use SHIFT B as you open iTunes (in Windows), which then allows you to specify which Library to use. (Search these discussions, particularly the iTunes ones for more information on that.)
Another option (Windows machines) if the existing machine already has an iTunes Library is to create a second user on the machine and use that user's account to install your Library. -
