My saved file changes have disappeared

I'm using a Macbook Air and Pages to write. It's running OS 10.9.5. I was writing today, all day. I saved every couple of minutes. I wanted to back up today's changes to my manuscript so I closed the Pages file to copy it to a drive. When I reopened the file, which showed that I had saved it just minutes before, all the changes that I made today were all gone. The whole day's work was not there and the file had reverted to the previous version from the day before.
I've searched every drive and folder that I'm connected to and there's nothing.
Anybody ever have this problem or hear of it? Any ideas about how to get my work back?
The horrible thing is, this same thing happened to my editor three days ago and I didn't believe him. I thought he must have made some mistake.

I had tried that but the changes didn't reappear. After reading suggestions on the forums for the past hour and trying them I found this:
"Pages just crashed on me as I was doing a find and replace. I'd not saved because I'd only done an hour and a half's worth of work this evening but I'd done enough that I didn't want to spend the time rewriting. I did a search for some of the text in my document and Spotlight found it in iCloud of all places!"
I tried searching a specific bit of text that only appeared in what I wrote today and Spotlight brought the document up!

My file names have disappeared in grid view. Thery have been replaced with a dark bar along the bottom of the previews. If I toggle using the command u it hide the bar but I still can't see the file name. In list view all the file names are OK.

The dark bar is caused by the option "Show metadata below image".
Check the settings for the metadata overlays in Grid view (basic and expanded) by clicking the little "badge" icon below the Browser and selecting "Edit". Is the filename still enabled in the list? And in a high enough position to have precedence for other metadata tags, if the space does not suffice to show all selected tags?

  • InDesign hasn't saved file changes

I've just spent a whole morning working on a file, and NONE of the changes that I've made to the document have been saved by InDesign.
I've saved regularly as I've gone, and I've received no error messages or warnings from InDesign, yet I've reopened the exact same file, and there are no changes to how it was when I left it yesterday. The modification date says 'Yesterday 17:01,' so the file appears not to have been updated by Indesign.
I've retreived an 'in progress' version from my last Time Machine backup (12:01 today), and a lockfile that was also backed up in Time Machine, and that was next to the file – but nothing. I notice the Lockfile is zero kb, but I don't know if that's usual.
I'm OS X 10.9.2, and InDesign CC 9.2. This is a whole mornings work down the drain, and I'm on a tight schedule in a busy department: how exactly can this happen without even throwing an error?

    Kevin,
I can only offer a safer method of saving your files, using a File>Save As instead of a File>Save and using versoining numbers. The advice is solid, and these forums are indexed by search engines, so hopefully my advice will be heeded in years to come,
I know it didn't solve  your dilemma, but it wasn't intended to, it was a word of advice, and prior to your latest post, I had no idea how long you were in the industry or what you consider to be safe practices.
It's impossible to know these things unless it's specified before I hit reply...
I'm not an expert on Time Machine, but it's quite possible that your file wasn't saved as the IDLK file prevented the file from being saved - but Time Machine somehow took a saved copy anyway - I'm not sure how that would work though? As that's not my understanding of how Time Machine works.
It's also possible that you saved your file and it was backed up by Time Machine, and then the IDLK was still in place, when you opened InDesign again it referred to the Backup file located (located in Prefereces) to restore an older version of your file.
IDLK files are not always removed when you close InDesign, especially after crashes, the IDLK files can remain, linking InDesign to open Backups of your files saved from the Preferences.
    As is my understanding.
If you can easily give a step-by-step of your procedures then why didn't you? How can anyone troubleshoot what went wrong if they can't follow what you did step-by-step?
How you the recoup the lost time is up to you - as I've stated before, safer method of saving  your files is to use File>Save As and use versioning numbers, rather than using File>Save and only having 1 version of your file on record. If you follow the Save As rule then you can avoid these diasters.
I have absolutely no idea what you mean when you say "I also appreciate your 'faith' in InDesign's infallibility"
Where in the whole reply did I say that InDesign was "infalliabl[ity]e"?
If you saw this type of behaviour before and were aware of it then why haven't you adopted safer Saving procedures?
For example, I use the File>Save As and versioning numbers. I also have everything saved on a server that's backed up every evening. Those files are shadow copied onto a personal drive on the server, and also on a cloud storage system outside the office.
Look - let's not get into who smells like what...
What happened here was an error with saving your file that you didn't notice. How it happened I don't know because you have refused to give the step-by-steps to recreate the issue.
If I can't recreate the issue I can't offer any advice to how it happened or how to resolve it.

  • DWMX not saving file changes

    This is weird.
I am changing the onMouseOver to all lower case so it
    vaildates with a xhtml
    doctype.
So I make the change, save the file, even close DW.
But when I open it up again, the onmouseover is now back to
    onMouseOver.
I was able to change all other instances of onMouseOver via a
    sitewide ctrl
find and replace and it even shows as if it's replaced this
    one file's
instances, but every time I open this file, it's back to the
    mixed case
    rather than lower case.
It's a similar situation with another file that just will not
    accept
onsubmit and keeps reverting back to onSubmit. It's a
    conspiracy! :)
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Cheers,

  • Problem saving files

I am using Dreamweaver 8 on Mac OSX 10.5 for an intranet
site. I deleted my site and set it up again. Now all my recent
changes have disappeared, and everytime I edit, and then try to
save a file I get this error message:
File activity incomplete. 1 file(s) or folder(s) were not
    completed
Any light folk could shed on this would be much
    appreciated.

As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized settings like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, etc.) or starting from a new User might also be beneficial.

  • In events that have a movie, my photos have disappeared?

In my iPhoto, the Events that had video saved, the photos have disappeared for some reason. If there wasn't a video in an Event then the photos are still there!
    Help please!

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • "The file [name of file] may have been changed by another user since you last saved it." Issue affects both network and local files.

When a certain user saves a file in Excel 2010, she gets a message: "The file <name of file> may have been changed by another user since you last saved it."  She can choose to save as another file or overwrite with her changes.
This just started happening a week or so ago.  She was concerned that someone else was accessing her files, but we did several tests that opened, made a change and saved in a matter of seconds, and she still gets the message.  It happens on
most files, but not all – both network and local.
We already tried the QFE_Saskatchewan registry fix.  I also checked the file server for Services for Macintosh.

You may be confused by the error in Excel saying “another user”. Actually Excel cannot tell who (the real human) is editing the file. Based on my research the No.1 possibility of the error is KB2626998.
2626998  Connection to a network document is lost in the 2007 Office system or in Office 2010 after the computer resumes from standby
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2626998
For Excel 2010, follow these steps:
    a.  Click Start , click Run , type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK .
    b.  Locate and then select the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Options
    c.  On the Edit menu, point to New , and then click Dword Value .
    d.  Type NetworkAvailableTimeInSeconds , and then press Enter.
    e.  Right-click NetworkAvailableTimeInSeconds , and then click Modify .
    f.  In the Value data box, click Decimal , type a number value, and then click OK .
Note This registry subkey sets the time, in seconds, that Excel waits for the network to resume. For example, if you type 15 for the number value, Excel waits 15 seconds for the network to resume. You might have to do some tests in your own environment to
determine an appropriate value. You may have to try multiple numbers.
    g.  Locate and then select the following registry subkey.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\office\14.0\common\Internet
    h.  Repeat step 2C through step 2F again. Reuse the same value that you used previously.
    i.  Exit Registry Editor.
Feel free to post back. Thanks.

I've been using numbers for iPad and I accidentally deleted a column. And the auto-save feature saved that and now I can't undo it. Does iCloud storage have backups of saved files from like 10 minutes ago? I have numbers synced to iCloud.
I tried to undo it but the app crashed.
I am hoping there's like a previously saved version of my file in iCloud somewhere.

No, iOS does not do short term incremental back ups to iCloud such as you get with Time Capsule. It backs up when you do soo manually, or if set properly, when the device is plugged in and connected to WiFi. It will not have saved your changes as of 10 minutes prior.

I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. Despite using Migration Assistant, a large chunk of my recent emails and nearly all of my wife's emails have disappeared in transit. Strangely, emails from my distant past are still there. Time Machine is no help; the messages may be on my backup disc but they're behind an invisible  icon. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • PSD files saved in TemporaryItems has disappeared.

Ahhhhhhhhhh PSD files saved in TemporaryItems has disappeared.
Hi I was working in Photoshop CS5.1 (OS X 10.7.5) and the original image I started with was saved in TemporaryItems, long story short I spent 4 hours working on an illustration and saving the .psd files\ versions in the same TemporaryItems folder, planning to move all the files tonight. Just came back to it and the files are gone! I may cry pixel tears, desperately running out of swear words.
If anyone can help I would be so very appreciative.
    Cheers Matt from Melbourne

Silly question, but, are you sure that's where Photoshop was saving? I've had it happen before where I open a file from folder A, then do a Save As, only to find that (for whatever reason) Photoshop has been saving to some other folder entirely.
Have you tried Open Recent Files in photoshop to see if maybe they were saved somewhere else?
Or, try this; go to Photoshop, create a blank document, then immediately Save As and look at where it's pointing. If it is not at the Temporary folder you expect, look there for your files.
Failing that, have you tried a search on your computer?
Silly. But I'm trying to cover all the bases.

  • Incopy CS4 (mac) - when closing file, changes are not saved

I have a CS4 Indesign document with assignments saved. When the editor works on the file, she is able to save as she goes, however gets a dialogue box about how we are trying to save over an older file with the options 'submit changes, discard changes and I think one other option'.
When 'submit changes' is clicked we re-open the file and find that the changes have not been saved.
We don't understand why we would receive that message since we are hitting save as changes are done while working on the file.
The odd thing is that it doesn't happen on all files. And the dialogue box doesn't always show up.
One thing to note is that we recently changed from a CS2 workflow that we've been using successfully for a few years. Ie. without that particular dialogue box showing up or any save issues.
    thanks all!

Lr & Photoshop both have the potential to use tiny (xmp) files for storing changes (and never save any other files), and both can save/export big honkin' tiffs, or like-sized jpegs...
If you save files in Photoshop with layers and such stuff, the files can get pretty big.
So, to answer your question: "It depends..." - which files, how saved/exported...
Try some stuff and inspect the file sizes!
