My second USB port on MBP 2011

I just recently bought a winter 2011 MBP 2.3 quad i7 and on initial use my second usb port did not recognize my devices (iphone, mouse, drivers). I restarted it and it worked... temporarily. It just crapped out again and I once again restarted it and it worked. This happened 3 times already. I'm curious has this happened to anyone else? is this a hardware malfunction or an update to solve this? Can anyone relate or just tell me to take my faulty computer back. Thanks.

That is a bad sign, and it is indicative of logic board issues.
I would take it to the Apple Store right away.

  • Satellite L645D-S4030 second USB port problem

Hi, I'm having trouble with the second USB port that's connected with the VGA port on my Satellite. I try to use my external hard drive, flash drive, and wireless mouse receiver on this port, but I've noticed that when the external hard drive is plugged in the light flashes on for only a second or two and the port itself never recognizes anything plugged in.
Can anyone help me figure this out? I've looked everywhere for a topic covering this problem and have turned up nothing

I am attempting to resolve a similar problem on a friend's L655.  Except that no USB device connected to any of the USB ports are recognized.  I do have an unknown device in Device Manager in the USB Controllers section that I have been unable to resolve.
You may just need the driver installed.  Have you tried that?.

  • How can I find/fix bad USB Port on MBP 2012 ivy 15' WITH SUPERDRIVE

I have a 2012 15' ivy bridge macbook pro with the super drive. I am a DJ and I get terrible static and other audio problems when the mixer/soundcard is connected to one of the USB ports, how can I determine which one it is and how can I fix it?

You'll just have to test your USB ports and see if you have a 'good' one - if not, take your machine and your equipment into your local Apple Store and let them 'hear' the problems with the USB port(s). There have been a number of posts here with problems using the USB 3.0 ports with various devices - usually USB 3.0 devices. Since the release of Mountain Lion, I've not read of many USB problems, though, with the 2012 machines. There have been some other problems reported with ML (not enough time on battery seems to be the main glitch but it's a problem that is not tied to certain models - just seems hit and miss).
You might want to try the ML upgrade and see if that fixes the problems - if not, it's time for a trip to the Apple Store.

  • USB Ports Insufficient Power Supply

There are problems with my USB Ports (Macbook late 2011, 13").
    I will break it down:
The rear USB port suddenly stopped working last week. I can confirm this becaues (1) my mouse does not work, and (2) I cannot charge any iPhones, iPods, or Blackberries when plugged into the port. They can charge and work when plugged into the front port, however.
Another interesting fact is that right when I plug my mouse in, the laser lights up for a second, then blinks off.
The front USB will only work under these conditions:
-Power Adapter is plugged in, or
-Power Adapter NOT plugged in, but the headphone jack cannot be occupied.
What should I do? I tried PRAM and SMC reset, to no avail.

Then you have a problem with the logic board and it will need to be replaced to fix your USB problems. Sorry there is no other solution as everything is soldered to the main system board, what Apple calls the logic board and better known as the Motherboard in the rest of the computer world.
So hopefully you bought the Applecare extended warranty within the first year of ownership. Replacing the logic board is expensive.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

  • 1 of 2 USB Ports not Working..

This only happened recently, but my second USB port is not working. Anything from my iPod to webcam to wireless mouse won't work in it, however the other port does. Anyone know what's wrong and how/if it can be fixed?
    Thanks in advance, happy holidays-
    Derek

    Hi Derek,
Reset the ports by removing the battery and disconnecting the power adapter for five minutes.

  • Distortion using USB port for audio output

I did some research in the Mac Mini community regarding the problem I'm experiencing but most of the posts were several years old so I thought I would start a new thread.
I am using one of the USB ports on my 2011 Mac Mini (2.3GHz, i5) to feed a High Resolution Technologies Streamer II USB DAC which then connects to my audio systems integrated amplifier. The issue I'm experiencing is that I am getting distortion when I first open iTunes and start a music track playing. I can hear the music but it is overlayed with this static like distortion. It seems to happen specifically when I first wake the computer from sleep and open iTunes and try to play a track. If I close and reopen iTunes and start a track playing again the distorion usually goes away and all tracks after the initial distortion play fine. I've done troubleshooting with regards to the HRT USB DAC and made sure the Streamer II is operating on its own USB Bus and I've tried a powered USB Hub to feed only the Streamer II but the distortion continues. So aside from the obvious hardware malfunction possibilities I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. Thank you,

well i dont have the cable yet i just was wondering if that would work. Yes it has bluetooth but i was told you cant use the bluetooth for a modem. Dont know why the phone has the option. How would i set up that option?

  • Low power on USB port for external hard drive

    Hi all!
I'm new here and I have some question about my brand new hybrid - HP Envy x2.
Couple days ago i found an issue that usb ports are powered by from motherboard even when tablet with dock is turned off or in hibernation mode. This is problematic when I leave device with plugged usb hub, external HD, speakers (powered from usb port) and mouse. After 8 hours in work when I go back home I saw that battery is about 10-15% lower than before leaving Envy x2. I disabled USB charge mode in BIOS, but after that I have problem with working of my external HD.
When I try to attach hard drive to computer and then I try to turn it on nothing happens - looks like system (Windows 8.1) can't boot. But after immediate unplugging HDD from USB system goes to procedure of starting. I also tried to plug Toshiba HD after turning on my Envy x2 and being in desktop, but nothing happens. Light on HD is blinking, I can hear from it sound like clicking (trying to start?). Also HD is visible in Device Manager but not in My Computer (as additional partition).
I have tried to change boot options in BIOS by positioning of devices (priority to boot from CD ROM, HDD, OS etc.) but did not fixed problem.
After couple of tests provided to found why my HD did not work properely in disabled USB charge mode I know that USB port did not give minimum value of power from supply. I found cable with one plug on one side, and with two plugs on other side (like "Y" type). Then i plugged one end into first USB port, then second end in second USB port and finally - last end of cable to m HD and booooom! It works!
Here is my question: Is there any ability to change that kind of power supply on USB ports? I want to power mu external hard drive from one USB port, not from two. I have USB hub but don't want to use two USB ports (on the opposite positions of docking station) and additional USB cable. I have the most recent BIOS (F12) and all fresh drivers installed on my computer.
    Any solutions?

I am not going to take credit for this. I had a similar problem, but all of my USB ports stopped working for EVERYTHING! You were right on track, and here is the final bit of information that you needed: Microsoft Surface tablet External USB hard drives auto-sleep in Windows 8.1 Posted on November 4, 2013 After upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Pro, my SeaGate Expansion 2TB hard drive always runs to sleep mode automatically and then disappears if no file transfers occur. when I try to access its stored files, the File Explorer will be unresponsive. Changing the power options is not working. In Windows 8.1 the external USB hard drives and USB flash drives are configured with a low power state by default. That causes USB massstorage devices auto-sleep or file transfers stop unexpectedly. You could change the hardware ID of USB storage device in the registry to resolve the problem. * Updated to the latest firmware for the device to check if it is fine. * From Start screen, open the Search charm, type regedit, right-click the regedit icon from result, and select “Run as administrator“. * In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\usbstor * Right-click the “usbstor” and create a key with the following key name: apricorn (aegis padlock) 09840315 buffalo external hdd 500gb 04110105 cavalry dual bay dock 152d2352 diskgenie usb device 09840092 hitachi touro 3.0 4tb usb 3.0 49711015 kingston datatraveler hyperx 3.0 usb device 256gb (dthx30/256gb) 0951162b lacie 2tb usb drive 059f1018 mediasonic h82-su3s2 probox 152d0539 multi-drive enclosure connected 15200551 seagate expansion 2tb 0bc23320 seagate expansion desk 3tb 0bc23312 seagate fa goflex desk 2tb 0bc25071 verbatim store ‘n’ save superspeed 3tb 18a50400 western digital elements desktop 2tb 10581021 western digital my book 2to 10581140 * Now right-click the new key, create a DWORD entry named DeviceHackFlags with 400 hexadecimal value. * Make a reconnection for the device. • Wireless connection via "dongle" - cannot use remaining USB port.

The dongle is too wide to allow space for plugging in to the second USB port. I have tried using the hub (Belkin) from my old Mac mini but the dongle disconnects regularly when plugged in via the hub. When plugged direct into the USB port the reception is solid. I want to use a wireless mouse because I prefer it to the trackpad. Any suggestion how to connect two devices at once without compromising the efficiency of the dongle?

    Try a USB extension cable?

  • Usb port/sd card reader recgonition issues after Yosemite?

I recently downloaded Yosemite to my macbook pro and hadn't noticed any issues till I tried to upload some photos. I usually just use the sd card reader but quickly found that each time I put an sd card in (I tried several just to make sure it wasn't an issue with my cards), there was no recognition at all, not in the left hand sidebar in the finder window or in the disk utility. I next tried out the usb ports with my ipod, external hard drive, and camera's usb cord. The first usb port is recognized in both itunes (when my ipod is connected) and in the disk utility (still not in the left hand sidebar finder window where I could just click on the device and see the contents it held like it usually has done in the past) however when I connect anything to the second usb port, I can hear the external harddrive revv up and my ipod starts to charge, but it isn't recognized in the computer by itunes or in disk utility. I'm not sure what to do since I did not back up my previous drive before updating my software and am a photographer who relies on being able to upload my photos on my computer. All my ports were working just fine before I updated this past week so I'm wondering if it has something to do with Yosemite?
I've made sure my external disk's option was checked in >finder>preferences, tried to reinstall yosemite, and have reset my PRAM and SMC and unfortunately found no difference.

I had this problem and don't at moment. Not sure of cause. Some have found that cleaning slot with compressed air or contact cleaner helps. Search Yosemine (this) forum for post headed "SD card reader does not work anymore" by GabTH (11/2/14) for a software fix. (Sorry, not a frequent user anymore and can't easily paste a link.)

  • USB port not responding

The second USB port on my iBook is not responding to my Flashdrive. However, the other USB port is. Any suggestions for fixing or figuring out what the problem is?
    Thanks.

Help. I too am having problems with my USB ports on a brand new 2.16ghz 15" Macbook Pro with 2GB Memory. More specifically, for my business, I use Vectorworks 12, a macintosh CAD program with a serial dongle that enables me to simply open and run the program. Well, the serial dongle is not lighting up as it should whwn plugging it into my MacBook Pro. My wife has a 15" PowerBook and G4 17" iMac, in which the dongle does NOT light up either! When I plug the dongle into my Dual 2 ghz "G5" Tower it lights up perfectly as it historically did! I plugged in a thumb drive that works in both my laptop and G5 tower. So why all of a sudden does the Vectorworks Serial Dongle become unrecognized by both USB ports in my MacBook Pro when Thumb drives, iPods, USB mouse etc. all work? The serial dongle should have at least lit up in my wifes 15" PowerBook or G4 iMac if the problem was isolated to my MacBook right? Something is messed up from the last firmware update maybe? So, what the heck happened! It was working a few days ago!? I need to use this serial dongle in my MacBook Pro but why is it, of all these computers mentioned, only being recognized on the G5? Please Help!

  • Underpowered USB ports on new MBP with retina display?

I just recently bought a MBP as described in the title and ran into an issue that I has not been yet reported with the USB ports.  Basically both USB ports seem to have power issues and frequently shut down with mention of a device drawing too much current. The ports are unable to support my HP lapdesk (a fan/speaker combination) and cannot charge my 3GS iphone and use it to tether at the same time. Both devices that do this work just fine on my wifes 2011 3" MBP and my old 2010 15" MBP (actually both of those can support a mouse, headphones, an i phone and a fan/speakers in the same USB port without extra power). Is this a known issue or do I need to talk to apple about a hardware issue specific to my laptop?

       No. This is not normal.

  • USB port problem on Mid 2011 iMac (27")?

I have a Mid 2011 27" iMac running Lion. The USB ports seem to be resetting so that my external TimeMachinne drive disappears. I get the "disk not properly ejected" errors, but no other indicators of a problem. I tried a different usb port, same result. This doesn't seem to affect my wired keyboard, or my iPod/iPad connections (when in use).

    Please do a SMC Reset.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • MBP 2011 usb problems

    Hello guys!
Not long ago I purchased MBP 15" i7 2.0Ghz model and I got problems with usb ports on that machine.
Every USB device that is connected to machine keeps disconnecting.I cant transfer any large file from external devices.
Patriot supersonic flash device is broken due disconnects.I think its burned cos of that constant disconnects.
I have checked ports with many other USB devices and problem persists on all other ones.
So I made conclusion that USB ports are broken.
